Senators Hold Key To Stopping Obama Attack on For-Profit Schools
by Capitol ConfidentialThe Obama Administration’sDepartment of Education has been working for months on an attack that would severely cripple career colleges in the United States, schools that help American students pursue educational options outside of the four-year non-profit universe.
Charging that these career colleges mislead students into believing they’ll obtain employment upon graduation, and that these schools mislead students into taking on debt, the Administration has proposed a “gainful employment” rule that would severely limit students’ financial aid options if they chose for-profit colleges over the Administration’s preferred four-year university route.
According to sources, the “gainful employment” proposal has been fueled by reports from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) as well as news media that have painted the career university system as predatory. However, many of these reports, including the one from the GAO, were revised after questions were raised about the accuracy of their initial drafts – and many of these reports fail to provide information about similar tactics and return on investment data for four year schools, a mis-step that, this week, Jamie Farrell at Forbes brought to light.
As congressional talks surrounding the negative impact online education has had on graduation rates and specifically loan default rates; what we are not hearing are long term solutions. We are hearing suggestions of Band-Aids.
Do I like the idea of the gainful employment laws? Yes! That said, if we are going to implement them, it should be done across the board and it needs government support to get started. What these lawmakers are failing to recognize is that it took guts, innovation, large investments and a lot of time NOT being profitable for these for profit online education companies to get where they are today…and the model is less than TEN YEARS OLD.
The U.S. House recently voted to defund the Department of Education’s “gainful employment” rule, but the key to eliminating this threat to educational choice for good still lies in the Senate. Senators in several states including Kentucky, Hawaii, Nevada and others will determine the fate of the “gainful employment” rule going forward. So far, the most crucial Republican Senators with votes on this bill are Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Sen. John Ensign of Nevada. Democrats hanging in the balance include Sen. Daniel Akaka and Sen. Daniel Inouye, both of Hawaii. Americans need to let these Senators know that educational choice must be preserved.

Yet another Marxist move to maintain the indoctrination of our youth.
because the non-profit colleges and universities have been doing soooooo well at the job
NOT!!!!!
Yeah, it couldn't be that the Libs are freaking out because when students go to "career colleges" they are almost completely exempt from the liberal indoctrination and brainwashing program that exists at a traditional college/university. Furthermore, most college students enroll in "traditional" schools and incur loads of debt for no reason other than it is expected of them. Most students out there aren't going to be biochemical nanotechnology engineers, unlocking and re-creating the building blocks of life as we know it. They are beer guzzling sex-aholics who are getting some innocuous degree because they are part of the university industry that has EVERYTHING to do with money, power and politics, and hardly anything to do with educating young people.
The three "Rs" of liberal economics…
Regurgitate failed policies.
Regulate success.
Retard growth.
End of liberal economics 101 lesson for the day.
Any questions…?
They're not "unionized" as per SEIU/Soros demands, end of story.
You Cannot!

I am not against for profit schools. I do, however, believe they should all be accredited schools. I went online to check my old alma mater, ASU, and even it has online courses for an MBA without attending the physical location which can present a difficulty for many students. I do believe other major universities do also offer online degrees through the MBA level. If for profits like PHX University are penalized, the entire system needs to receive the same or similar treatment.
I predict that more universities will offer online degrees in the future due in large part to improved tech and rising costs of housing, board, and transport. Additionally many students also work and the ability to obtain an education is much easier if they can do so online. It is a much more flexible option. Besides in the long run it is cheaper. Less physical plant, less maintenance, etc.
That pretty well sums it up in an easily understood nutshell
FreedomWorks will send e-mails to Congress for you on subjects that you disapprove of and want change and action:

Yep…I considered UOP but decided to go with Regis University.
Oregon State here.
That was before the ramped up indoctrination though.
The preschoolers are lose again.
Well– If they simply had classes that Emphasized the left, there would be no problem. Can't have too many of those TEA PARTY folks getting a higher education ya know.
Tater–does that include impeachment of the IDIOT in CHIEF????
What’s the difference between a liberal and a puppy? A: A puppy stops whining after it grows up.
Instead of "Progressive," always use the words "Oppressive" or "Regressive." When called on this respond with – "But how is it progress to steal free citizens' liberties, money, and hope, and hand it all over to government bureaucrats?"
Marxism never sleeps.
Now 'Bamm wants more control over education — plus his people are talking with Wall Street hedge fund people who have been getting illegal inside information to short the stock of these for-profits before Obama attacks them.
.
let me get this straight now,……
There exists an avenue for young people to be educated in order to,….
increase their chances of becoming gainfully employed but,…….
these for profit educational institutions do not however,
indoctrinate these "fortune seekers" with the mandatory mush that,…….
come with the traditional ivy covered, gothic looking institutions of tenuredom.
So now we expect the RINO / Lefty infested Senate to do,……WHAT,…..??????
Well,…… bula bula,…….bula bula.
I sure hope someone is keeping track of all these Senate votes on all these House bills.
BO sticking up for his "non-profit schools" what a crock the only reason they are non profit is so they can try to hide all the donations from taxes and over pay their teachers. The reason they want to stop schools like UOP is they dont want people thinking or being able to have reasonable debate between adults, they want you to sit in your seat and believe everything the teacher tells you without questioning them.
Let's see. These schools focus on real world skills such as business or medical training that will be needed to make a living and feed yourself, while the big universities focus has shifted to liberal pursuits such as homosexual or ethnic studies or a way to make a living through taxpayer funded big-govt grant programs. OK. Now it makes sense.
Problem is, the traditional accrediting bodies refuse to accredit for-profits. Another example of the GOB network.
BO smells just as bad as B.O.!
Some people only have the opportunity to go to a school like that, but they don't brain wash people to the liberal Progressive way, ergo they are not worthy.
Don't forget, people will not be able to afford the gas to drive to class in Obama land.
I used to work at one of those evil for-profit schools. Here are the gory details:
Graduation rate: 90%
Graduate employment rate: 95%.
Instructors were responsible for students graduating. So we worked our butts off to make it happen. Students got more support and encouragement than they'd ever get in a traditional college. Instructors were also heavily involved in graduate placement–developing relationships with local employers, arranging internships, etc. And contrary to popular belief, neither the staff nor instructors were paid any extra for students achieving these goals. We worked on salary.
Students were expected to attend class every day. It was 20 hours/week for 48 weeks–very intensive. Students also had to meet various objective skill measurements to pass classes and graduate.
The majority of students were from the so-called "underserved" population. They succeeded because we made them work for it. But we were their best supporters, usually the first people who believed they could reach the bar we set for them.
If that's evil, then I'm ready to go to hell now.
More un-Constitutional power grabbing. Why?….Because neither the legislative, or executive branches of government, were given the Constitutional powers to regulate education, either public, or private. In reality, it's a 10th Amendment state issue, and not the domain of the federal government!
What are we waiting for?…..
Kill the Department of (non) Education NOW!
Obama needs Impeached.
The Senate holds the key to saving America by removing Obama from Office.
"The principal feature of American libtardism is sanctimoniousness. By loudly denouncing all bad things–war and hunger and date rape–liberals testify to their own terrific goodness. More important, they promote themselves to membership in a self-selecting elite of those who care deeply about such things… It's a kind of natural aristocracy, and the wonderful thing about this aristocracy is that you don't have to be brave, smart, strong, or even lucky to join it, you just have to be libtard."
- P. J. O'Rourke:
It needs to be across the board. But just because U of P is private please don't make it a sacred cow or the poster child to defeat this bill. It's college light and don't pretend it's not. They have done extremely well on the government tit, encouraging people to rack up some serious debt for a degree that a lot of people hiring today don't see as an equivalent to a 4 year degree earned right after high school. Yet their marketing and recruiting will never reflect that.
Millions of dollars of government guaranteed loans that are never paid off pass through the U of P every year. I think some oversite and standards are applicable here.
Millions of dollars in government education loans pass through colleges and universities of every type. There are many students for whom the traditional 4 year college degree is worthless. Singling out for profit institutions doesn't help the students who are attending non-profit schools (like where I teach) who need a major dose of reality before continuing their education.
Anymore, I'm of the opinion that higher ed should have a minimum age requirement. Kids today need to experience the real world (i.e., get a job, pay your bills, etc) before wasting their parents money (or a lifetime of student loan payments) on an education they are not ready for.
Keepin' the indoctrination centers…errr..I mean universities in business.
" In reality, it's a 10th Amendment state issue, and not the domain of the federal government!"
Yeah, WE all know this, however, I challenge you to find a proggie that lives "in reality".
Gentle Readers:
Pres. Obama attended Occidental College without earning a degree. He then attended Columbia University and did not earn a degree. He then was admitted to Harvard, not based on his academic record, but as his father was an alum, and finally did earn a degree, but it is difficult to see how he gained any useful employment from it. His career path has been
as a ' community organizer ' and politician.
Two issues illustrated here:
#1: Pres. Obama was able to attend private prep schools and college as he has a rich grandmother. Should higher education be restricted only to those lucky people, like Pres. Obama, with rich relatives who can pay cash?
#2: Using the ' gainful employment ' criteria, certainly Occidental College and Columbia University should refund Pres. Obama's expenditures there, and possibly even Harvard. Of course, that would be silly as all of these institutions provided a valuable opportunity. How is this different from a proprietary school? Indeed, aren't all three of these fine institutions, in fact, proprietary private schools?
Sincerely,
John Lepant Brighton CO
As a rule, private universities and career colleges are much more expensive than public universities because of state and national education subsidies to the publics. So the fact that so many private universities and colleges exist speaks to the poor quality of the public education system. It is the same with Fedex/UPS and the Post office. Two services that are far more expensive than the government subsidized USPS, but are more efficiently and effectively run and obviously offer more value to a great number of consumers. I would bet that they are next on his agenda!
Most attendee's at career colleges already have employment and either their employer's requirement for the job has been upgraded to a BS or MS degree or the employer is willing to pay for the employee to improve their educational preparedness. Many nurses that were AS or Certificate trained have gone back to school to obtain their BSRN. If it wasn't for distance learning (many from state universities and private colleges outside of the local area) many RN's would not be able to complete the task.
There is a bubble growing in higher education. The Keynsians of the Obama admin are doing everything they can to inflate that bubble in the traditional 4-year colleges and universities. When it popd, guess what they will blame it on?…of course, the free market.
I am currently enrolled in a 'for-profit' school, working on an AS degree in Health Information Technology. The campus had just eliminated the Information Tech course because, as well know, the market for that skill is small. The school is currently getting accredited by the Joint Commission and AHIMA so that, upon graduation, I will be able to take the accredidation exam and begin my career. Everyone on campus, instructors, counselors, etc, are all very encouraging and willing to go out of their way to aid any student that needs it and asks for it. I was personally tutored by our Program Director last term.
Point being, because these schools live or die based on their ability put out a good, useful, needed product, ie, educated and competent students, into a market that demands it, they are far more responsive to the changes in the market. I guarantee that my AS degree will find me far more able and ready to work in my chosen field than a 4-year BA degree'd child who majored in Philosophy or Underwater Zombie Taming.
Impeach the silly bastard!
Somebody should ask him why he intends to pay for part of his education plan by delaying the construction of the manned replacement for the space shuttle. Historically NASA and education have never been part of the same spending bills. It's a pretty poor way to advance science by killing a major science program and making the US depend on the Russians for a decade if it needs manned spaceflight capabilities.
THANK YOU UNION BOSSES!
Has anyone noticed how much better educated and more respectful our children are now that UNION BOSSES are running our public schools? The quality of public education has improved so much…
They are taught there is no God, murder your baby, praise homosexuals, be politically correct, global warming, embrace illegals and big Socialist government is the answer to everything. Of course the kids can't speak, write or form a cognizant thought, but they know all the rappers by name, know how to put on a condom, and are prepared for sexual activity as early as grade school.

Storm the hill!
Clearly another move to save union jobs in state schools.
Here is news flash – Universities and Grad School are going to take big downward hit as enroll goes down. Why go to school if you can get a job? Why go into debt ?
What will happen to financial aid?. Have to think that will take hit as well.
Keep one thing in mind a large percentage of those students are people learning a new job skill for a market such as one of many jobs needed to run the medical industry. Does Obama want them to remain unemploy or have a low paying job? Oh he does because then the people will want the government to give them goodies!

"Charging that these career colleges mislead students into believing they’ll obtain employment upon graduation…"
That ain't so bad. Public universities misled students into believing they'll be educated upon graduation.
LOL!
The Monopolies are scared. Sanctions/tariffs/regulations are the standard responses.
Really? No one is going to tell you your statistics are made up?
The rationale for the attack is obvious. Government schools in higher education can inflict cradle to grave indoctrination.
All colleges are for profit, how else do all these schools afford basketball and football teams that cost the school millions and turn around and make most of that back in for profit ads and televised rights not to mention ticket sales.
They can say what they want. I'll swear to my statistics in court or anywhere else, for that matter.
