Obama Admin Whitewashes Drilling Policy
by Capitol ConfidentialCriticism continues to amass on the heels of the blog posted by the Whitehouse Wednesday boasting ‘Expanding Safe and Responsible Energy Production.” Attempting to drive home the point that, long before this current spike, their main concern rested in “increasing responsible domestic energy production – including oil and gas,” the Obama Administration engaged in a bit of revisionist history. In reality, actions taken by President Obama and his staff indicate that despite the rising cost of oil, there is little sense of immediacy to get one of our most profitable industries back to work.
The main argument behind the stagnant permitting, the Obama Administration maintains, is BP’s disasterous blowout in the Gulf, “protecting” Americans from the horrors that would no doubt ensue should deepwater drilling restart at a pre-Gulf oil spill clip. Forbes reporter Christopher Helman makes a valid point in exposing the disingenuous nature of the Obama administration’s willingness to issue permits: while the industry was not adequately prepared to clean up the spill, reports have shown that the main problem was in BP’s implementation of the well, not the overall industry’s handling of the disaster – nor the industry’s chances of a second failure. In fact, the chances of another spill have gone down significantly with the most recent set of safety procedures established by the Department of the Interior. Companies now have the technology to drill safely in deep water, and new measures are in place to contain and control a BP-sized blowout, in the (very) off chance such an incident should happen again. It was BP’s haste in building the well, not the industry’s haste in correcting the problem.
William Reilly, co-chair of the presidential panel tasked with investigating causes of the oil spill, remains impressed with the industry’s ability to respond to the disaster, The Hill reports.
“William Reilly, co-chair of the presidential panel tasked with investigating causes of the BP PLC (BP, BP.LN) oil spill, on Tuesday called the oil and gas industry’s response to the disaster ‘remarkable and reassuring,’” Dow Jones reports.
“Speaking at the IHS CERA energy conference in Houston, Reilly, a former Environmental Protection Agency administrator who oversaw the cleanup of the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska, heaped praise on a pair of spill containment systems developed after the Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April, unleashing the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.
Reilly added, “From where I sit, the major obstacles to drill have been removed.”
Despite the continuously improving working environment, the administration has seemingly halted permitting process. In a time where Americans need to get back to work and oil prices soar over $100 a barrel, it seems foolish to stunt such a profitable industry.
All of this information culminated into a coalition letter from several businesses on the ongoing de facto moratorium. Bromwich’s celebration in granting a permit last week only spurred action from some of the most prominent business coalitions. NBCC President and CEO Harry Alford explained:
“The single deepwater drilling permit granted in the Gulf is a political maneuver, and an insult to struggling businesses, meant only to alleviate pressure on Interior Department Secretary Salazar for budget discussions with Congress. The Administration ought to be focusing attention toward alleviating the pressure on business owners on the brink of collapse from the economically destructive and ongoing moratorium.”
In this economic environment Americans cannot afford politics as usual. The White House claiming ‘expanding energy production’ as one of their primary concerns is just another fabrication. It is time to get the oil industries back to work and restore jobs in the Gulf. Failure to act now will delay recovery moving forward.

Yet the United States is sitting on the world's largest untapped oil reserve. A natural resource that would not only mitigate the over $400 Billion sent overseas to other countries but could create untold millions of jobs and put the country on a sound financial footing.
The untapped reserves are estimated up to 2.3 Trillion barrels, nearly three times the reserves held by the OPEC countries and sufficient to meet 300 years of demand, at today's levels — for auto, truck, aircraft, heating and industrial fuel, without importing a single barrel of oil.
The US could become the single largest exporter of oil and oil related products in the world, thus potentially eliminating its trade deficit, and increasing the national standard of living as well as making a massive dent in the national debt.

Here is a look at some of the largest untapped reserves:
The Bakken Fields in North and South Dakota. New drilling and oil recovery technology is making the capture of this oil feasible and some development is now underway. It is estimated that there is at least 200 Billion barrels of oil in this region. At a price of $100 per barrel the value of this find is $20 Trillion.
The Outer Continental shelf. It is estimated that around 90 billion barrels of oil sit beneath the ocean bed 50 to 100 miles off the shore of the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. The value: $9 Trillion.

The Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. About 10 billion barrels are locked up here with a current value of $1 Trillion.
Tar Sands: Around 75 Billion barrels of oil could come from these areas which are similar to the Canadian tar sand fields and which now produce about 2 million barrels per day. The value: $7.5 Trillion
Oil Shale. This is the most massive area of potential oil production in the world with an estimated 1.5 Trillion barrel potential. The technology necessary to extract this oil is now in place and being operated on a pilot project basis. The value of this resource: $150 Trillion

There also the very real potential that further finds will be discovered as technology continues to improve.
In total the value of the potential oil reserves of the United States listed above exceeds $187 Trillion. The current national debt is $14.2 Trillion or less than 8%.
Despite the protestation of President Obama and the environmentalists the world and particularly the United States is not running out of oil. Their foolish tilting at windmills and solar will never produce energy sufficient to operate a $14Trillion and hopefully growing economy. It will be decades if not the rest of the 21st Century before any meaningful substitute for fossil fuels will be developed and additional time and investment will then be necessary to distribute the product.

I was reading that California is looking at taking protection to yet another level. They are proposing a bill to make a breath analyzer mandatory in ALL cars. And if you fail a certain number of times, your car won't start. The level they were looking at was .03. Mind you, that is less than half the legal limit. So, basically, if you have a glass of wine or a beer with dinner. You gotta walk home.
But, that is not the 'problem'. The problem is: Yet another government intrusion. An intrusion on people who have DONE NOTHING WRONG.

What's the problem then? Why aren't oil companies jumping to pump the black gold? Contrary to what some conspiracy theorists would have you believe, there is no cabal of oil companies and foreign governments blocking the way, bottling up U.S. oil production. The reality is much more mundane. Those untapped reserves are located in places that either Uncle Sam has put off-limits for environmental reasons or are too costly to get — or a combination of both.

2. We've seen the administration repeatedly release "optimistic" unemployment numbers, only to quietly revise them downwards. Get back to me when unemployment is 7%, cupcake. That's a REAL sign unemployment is falling, One month does not make a trend.
3. Gas was already rising before Libya. In case you haven't read the papers (aside from the comics), the entire Middle East is experiencing turmoil, not just Libya. And yet there's no sign of a solid energy policy from this administration.
4. The Volt? Seriously, you think that's a sign of how well the economy is doing?
5. Your God Emperor is still tanking in his approval ratings. Again, you seem to mistake a short term rise for a trend. 4. There's a real chance the US could lose its AAA credit rating status.
5. Several US states may default, in which case King Barry will have the unpleasant choice of either bailing them out (unpopular with the voters) or watching them act as boat anchors to any chance of recovery.
6. Long term energy prices will not decrease, but will instead increase.
7. Social Security and Medicare are in the red, with tens of trillions in unfunded liabilities.
… And that's just off the top of my head. If you want to play Pollyanna, feel free. The smarter, and more economically literate of us know just how screwed we are.

Energy is key to our economy. Obama's refusal to accept drilling for oil, or natural gas, a mining coal, or building nuclear plants, or recovering oil from shale is threatening the economic recovery. And by refusing to use these abundant sources, we become even more dangerously dependent on unstable energy producing countries.
Does he think the economy can stand $7 or $8 or $10 gasoline??? The Community-Organizer-in-Chief says we can not drill our way out of this crisis, but we can't build the infrastructure necessary to transport our products to market and get people to work &n home again overnight either!!! What are we suppose to do, move to the cities??? We're talking about a huge investment that will take time to accomplish. So the use of the argument about drilling fails to consider the timeframe needed for alternatives.

I can't quickly find a current link, but this lie is making me nuts. For YEARS we have had to listen to the pap about how much energy we use per capita. No one seems to notice that we produce per capita commensurate to that consumption. Developing companies have a lower ratio of consumption to production, so while we are producing for the world, others are sucking it all in and barking at us. The public needs to stop parroting this stupid lie. All of our oil usage 'feeds' the world.

The Union crews made me CRAZY. Our crew got the bands in and out in record time. When we were forced to add Union guys — like for Disney shows– they were always taking breaks or making sure no one except the screwdriver people could pick up a screwdriver. We did a great job with screwdrivers when they were not around. We amused ourselves with a great joke–one of us would stand around with coffee and a cigarette in the middle of everyone working and ask, "who am I?". The answer was always "a union guy". Laughter all around. Excepl, the union guys didn't laugh.

Thanks P2O. We just went though some tough times here over the past couple of months. It seems like everything that could go wrong did. Murphy sort of moved in with us and decided to stay awhile.
BTW…. remind me to tell you how much I love dealing with mortgage companies. Talk about a horror story… boy do I have one to tell now!
