Rogue Dems Buck Party, Save Seniors
by Capitol ConfidentialHouse Democrats adjourned this week without a vote on extending the Bush tax cuts set to expire in January. While they seem content to blame Republican leadership for the failure, it turns out that a group of Democratic House members bucked party leadership to join with the GOP in a move aimed at protecting senior citizens from a massive tax hike – and quite possibly indicating an eventual bipartisan kill-off of President Obama’s tax agenda .
Led by Rep. John Adler, D-N.J., the 47 House Democrats wrote a letter Tuesday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., urging her to keep lower tax rates on dividends and capital gains that will expire at the end of this year.
A number of tax cuts enacted in the past decade are due to expire at the end of this year. Our fiscal policy should be one that maximizes economic growth and private sector job creation. That is why we strongly believe that Congress should extend the current tax rates for dividend and long-term capital gains taxes…We [] have a responsibility to protect middle class families and seniors from harmful tax increases and their economic impact…
Many seniors depend on this income to supplement their fixed retirement income. A recent study found that in 2007 over 27 million tax returns had dividends qualifying for the reduced tax rate reduction. Of those returns, 61 percent were from taxpayers age 50 and older and 30 percent were from taxpayers age 65 and older.
President Obama and Democratic leadership are also looking to allow other special brackets to expire, particularly long-term capital gains, which would affect couples earning more than $250,000 a year and individuals earning more than $200,000.
Citing the study mentioned in the letter, this small band of Dems tried to make clear to their leadership how deeply those saving for retirement and those in retirement would be affected.
Democrats’ proposal to raise taxes on seniors is a political gamble as well, one that could have disasterous implications in key battleground states. In the tossup state of Nevada, voters age 60 and older made up 28 percent of the electorate in 2006. In Florida, those age 60 and older represented 34 percent of voters in the last midterm election.
The group of rogue Democrats ended their plea by expressing concern that Obama’s plan to raise taxes, which could hamper recovery and decrease the amount of capital available to companies, would damage a fragile economy . “Our economy is fragile,” the Democrats wrote. “We need tax policies that will promote our recovery. Raising taxes on capital gains and dividends could discourage individuals and businesses from saving and investing. We urge you to maintain the current tax rate for both dividend and long-term capital gains taxes.”
Democratic leadership does not, however, appear to be listening.

Repeal the 16th amendment and replace the current tax system with one based on transactions that the government has a Constitutional responsibility to police or enforce. If there were no income tax, would a small tax on food be so bad for funding the USDA? Got contracts? A small tax to support the legal system, anybody? It would take more creative power than I have, but a just tax system could be devised. Stop the class warfare and social engineering these freaks utilize to terrorize the American people. It would also be a blow FOR privacy rights. What the hell business is it of the U.S. Treasury how much I make anyway?
It's a start, guys. I wrote Congressman Adler to thank him for working with Republicans like, uh, congress used to do when responsible people were in office, lol. Seems like a little enough thing to do, to encourage across the aisle cooperation. If he doesn't get reelected then no harm done, and if he does he'll see he gets nice thank you's when he works WITH people to fix this mess!

My husband and I were just talking about China and our debt this afternoon while we were taking the kiddos to the doctor. The debt makes both of us sick and we can't even sleep at night. I'm pissed off that the future of my children has been stolen and mortgaged. I'm nervous they left is going to pull some serious crap in October to stop the elections.
I was just reading your profile and hadn't realized you live in Chicago. I was born and raised in Rockford IL. Most of my family there have lost their manufacturing jobs. Rockford has one of the worst unemployment numbers in the Upper Midwest.
I hope you come to Virginia, we'd love to have you here! The weather is mild and the southern hospitality is great! Our state had conservatives sweeps last November and is running with a budget surplus. It's actually unconstitutional in my state to deficit spend.

As for the debt et al, it IS all about the kids and that is what keeps me up at night as well –
I have come to recognize that 1. most of the pathetic trolls are kids who have no one to care for but themselves, and that apparently is too challenging for them. And 2. people with kids who aren't concerned or don't bother to learn, are self indulgent parents-in-name-only! How could ANY parent not be worried about the future their children and potential grandchildren will inherit? I don't get it, I honestly don't. It's the sad reality of our culture that is all about 'me and my wants' and I'm sick to death of it! Can we please end this politically correct nonsense and get back to reality!

Wow I'm really starting to believe that we are being successful in reclaiming our country from the socialists. Of course don't let your guard down for a second, but I think this is bigger than a contentious election cycle. Seems to me that the pendulum is finally swinging back. Democrats are going rogue, and you've got the director of the global warming movie sticking it to the teachers unions.
Kind of like how the late 60s changed the country in very real ways, for a very long time, what's going on now is going to do the same. And I think it's going to be even more significant than it appears now–remember all this change (for the better) is happening DESPITE an almost complete media blackout on portraying the tea party movement or the republicans in a fair light (or even acknowledging us at all).
I mean there was the Contract With America, I remember that being a big deal but this election just looks like a tidal wave, and being less about a particular administration but more about reclaiming the fundamental philosophy of just what America is. Which means this has been coming for years, just building and building and now it's about to explode.

This is a Socialist regime who thinks that the people's money is theirs to do with what they want. Namely to force people into collectives that are easier to control. Control is the key word here. In order to acheive the Utopian state that this government envisions, they have to control the people. The people are here only to serve the State. Not vice versa. That is the whole premise of Socialism. The present government's approach to our economy is ample proof of their intentions towards that goal. Their whole attitude reeks of "We know what is best for you, so shut up and do what you are told!". Fortunately, this situation is already starting to change for the betterment of the American people. We the people have had enough of this tripe and are getting off our backsides to change the dynamics. Once the reversal has taken root, our economy will come roaring back. Then we'll have to be careful of inflation. Another monster that can destroy countries.

Senior citizens vote religiously, so I don't think anyone that wants to get reelected will cross them. If Obama raises taxes on them, he'll probably soften the blow by throwing another entitlement their way as his election loomed. If such a situation came to pass, it would be interesting to see what the Republicans did.
Its easy to talk about how disciplined one is going to be when one is in the opposition, but in my lifetime when the rubber meets the road politicians invariably choose to spend, though each party tends to have slightly different spending priorities.
Would their disagreement be the basis for the split we have now Could it have been the precursor to big/small government, democracy/republic and socialist/capitalist?
