FDA Rationing Battle Continues
by Capitol ConfidentialBig Government.com alerted it readers weeks ago about the emerging model for rationing health care at the FDA. The FDA is considering “de-listing” the drug Avastin for use with breast cancer patients– not because it doesn’t work, but because of its cost.
With a new government health care regime paradigm being established, cost to insurance companies and government health care services will play a critical role in whether patients will have the option of life extending drugs.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance has joined the Avastin fight and is pushing back on behalf of patients.
In a letter to the FDA and congressional lawmakers, OCNA and Komen for the Cure express concern for the impact on patients who are currently benefitting from the drug, concern for the impact on future drug development and cite concerns about fundamental fairness problems with subjective determinations that limit access to treatments.
The groups conclude by saying the decision to use Avastin should be made between a woman and her doctor after a thoughtful conversation that carefully considers its benefits and risks. OCNA believes that women who have the potential to benefit from this drug should have access to it.

Komen and the OCNA are heavy hitters and most reputable to boot, especially Komen. Bad NGOs to have against you. It raises an interesting question, though. Exactly where does Big Pharma, which spent tens of millions pushing ObamaCare, make out with an expensive drug like Avastin being de-listed by the FDA? They must gain elsewhere. Pushing other drugs in larger quantities, maybe? There has to be more to this story.
Except for number thirteen everyone of these goals have been achieved since 1963…

Mr. HERLONG. Mr. Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Nordman of De Land, Fla., is an ardent and articulate opponent of communism, and until recently published the De Land Courier, which she dedicated to the purpose of alerting the public to the dangers of communism in America.
At Mrs. Nordman's request, I include in the RECORD, under unanimous consent, the following "Current Communist Goals," which she identifies as an excerpt from "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen:

CURRENT COMMUNIST GOALS
1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.
2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.
3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength.
4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.
5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites.
6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.
7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.
8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.
9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.
10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.
11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.)
12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.
13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.
14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.
15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.
16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."
27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a "religious crutch."
28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."
29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."
31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture–education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.
34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.
36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.
38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].
39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.
40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.
42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic, political or social problems.
43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.
44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.
45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals alike.

WASHINGTON — The nation's farmers could face severe restrictions on the use of pesticides as environmentalists, spurred by a favorable ruling from a judge in Washington state, want the courts to force federal regulators to protect endangered species from the ill effects of agricultural chemicals.
The eight-year-old ruling by a federal judge in Seattle required the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Environmental Protection Agency to review whether 54 pesticides, herbicides and fungicides were jeopardizing troubled West Coast salmon runs.

Yep, they're gonna stop using this drug because of the cost. Money is now the issue over the people's lives. Just like the Europe's. I'm pretty sure that the people who wanted 'free' healthcare didn't have this in mind.
In reference to my top post, it just struck me in one way how Big Pharma could make out after all, even with the expensive Avastin de-listed and the tens of millions poured into pushing ObamaCare. Given the cost-benefit template (i.e. rationing), cancer patients will most likely be getting more maintenance drugs instead of expensive life-prolonging treatments. In short, the drug sales pile up while the treatment rooms empty out and lives are shortened.

Anytime Government gets between you and your Physician, it is Toxic! We needed, imo, 3 changes to our former great American Health Care System. I know for a fact that those 3 changes would have kept US at the top of th World in quality Health Care, and pathophysiology treatment options, and Research & Deveopment! Obama killed it! Repeal and Replace, and let Medical people run it with an Economist on the Board. I've seen people die because of ignorant beurocracy. There is a perfect answer, and it is NOT OBAMACARE!

No. This is a lie. Avastin does not work for breast cancer. In trials, survival rates actually dropped. The independent advisory board of doctors and specialists who reviewed it, including industry reps, voted 13-0 affirming that, based on the drugmakers own statistics, it was not effective and should not be approved.
Genentech was charging more than $100 grand a year per patient for a drug that was scientifically proven not work. That is obscene.
Stop shilling for the drug industry, Breitbart. Or at least register as a lobbyist.

The Big Pharma executives were trying to play the game of "stayin' alive despite the strangulation by Big Government." However, the rank-and-file pharma scientists, like my husband, think that strategy is absolutely idiotic. Kind of like BP's pushing for crap-n-trade, or Obooby appeasing terrorists.
Don't forget that the businesses who play dirty often use government as the weapon. Avastin is made by Genentech, the world's most successful biotech company by a factor of 10. There are some lazy-a$$ Big Pharma companies out there–Pfizer in particular–that would rather buy a competitor than produce a better product. A weaker Genentech performance and that of its parent company, Roche, would make life hunky dory for the world's biggest Big Pharma.
I would offer that loyalty oaths mean absolutely nothing to certain types of people who currently infest our government, especially our current President. Therefore, #13 has been achieved, even if it is temporarily so.

Avastin is used for Her(-) metastatic breast cancer patients. Furthermore, Avastin in combination with paclitaxel has shown to improve survival when compared with treating with paclitaxel alone.
It may not work for every breast cancer patient, but when it does, it helps considerably. It's a matter of finding the right combination of drugs, and Avastin should be available if a patient could possibly be helped by it. There's no way to know if a specific breast cancer patient could be helped by Avastin unless the patient tries it. Breast cancer care is trial and error and is specifically tailored to the individual patient, and therefore, breast cancer patients need every therapy available to them to try.
The problem is that you think a drug should be a panacea. No chemical, biological, or hormone therapy does that for metastic breast cancer. Unless the patient fully recovers from breast cancer, is expected to live 10+ years, and suffers no side effects, it's not worth the money to invest in these drugs that help a specific number of people. Therefore, there's no need for Avastin to be in the marketplace.

Before I post my comment, let me give you my credentials. I am a pharmacist and I work in the pharmaceutical industry (product development and now Quality Assurance). I have been in the industry for almost 20 years and I know a little something about the FDA.
The purpose of the FDA is to "protect" the public from adulterated/misbranded drugs (counterfeited drugs included) and to approve drugs on the basis of safety and efficacy. Before the final FDA decision for a new drug (New Drug Application), there is an advisory committee that meets to discuss the issues surrounding the new drug candidate and then they vote: "yes or "no". Here is the overall questions that is asked of the committee:
"Does the overall risk-benefit assessment of (DRUG NAME) support its approval for the treatment of …….. ?" The FDA usually goes along with the vote of the committee.
There is nothing in the FDA's charter nor the advisory committee's instruction to approve/not approve a drug on the basis of cost – CASE CLOSED! The FDA is now becoming a long arm of the progressive administrations that we are voting into government and I fear this is just the tip of the iceberg of what is to come now that the Feds control healthcare.

There were two big trials that just had results released: RIBBON and AVADO. In AVADO, the increase in progression-free survival (meaning how much longer they lived without the tumors getting larger) in patients receiving Avastin vs those who weren't was around .8 months (so about 3 weeks). In RIBBON, the progression-free survival rates were a little better, but the actual survival benefit for both trials was zero. Null. Zilch. People did not live longer.
So what patients are paying for is about 2 months of not having tumors getting larger. It doesn't mean that their quality of life is better (they still have cancer and the side effects of Avastin are pretty bad), it just means the disease didn't progress.
They didn't live any longer, however.
So are you willing to spend $80k on a drug that doesn't make you live a day longer than if you hadn't taken it?
