ObamaCare: The Rationing Begins in Earnest
by Capitol ConfidentialThe ink is not yet dry on the Obama Health Care takeover and rationing advocate Donald Berkwick has yet to have his desk moved into the Medicare offices, and the Administration is already attempting to limit life-extending drugs for cancer patients.
This is the first shot in the health care revolution.
In September, the Food and Drug Administration will try to take the anti-cancer drug Avastin “off-label.” Avastin is a Stage 4 drug used to battle breast cancer. Avastin is not a cure but has been shown to stop the growth of cancer for an average of five months — meaning some late stage breast cancer victims live beyond five months.
But late stage breast cancer patients do not fit into the cost-benefit analysis of the Obama Administration. We told America rationing would happen if the health care takeover bill passed and in September, women with breast cancer will be its first victims.
Avastin is the first medicine to fight cancer by blocking the growth of blood vessels that feed tumors. While Avastin is expensive and may not be the miracle drug some anticipated for breast cancer (it is for other types of cancer) from the success of the early trials, the overwhelming majority of breast cancer specialists believe the drug can be effective and useful in certain patients
If the FDA takes Avastin off label it will effectively deny all but the richest Americans access to the drug. Once a drug is off label, most insurance and Medicare will no longer cover the cost of the treatment. So even if a patient meets the criteria of one who might respond positively to Avastin once it is taken off label it is highly unlikely that patient will have access to the drug unless they have the money to pay for it outright.
WHIFF OF SCANDAL?
Traditionally the FDA and ODAC make decisions based on a process called “endpoints.” Does a drug achieve certain targets? In this case, the FDA changed the criteria to judge the effectiveness of the drug.
Dr. Richard Pazdur is the FDA’s Cancer Czar. Pazdur decides which anti-cancer drugs patients can have access to. In the case of Avastin, Pazdur changed the criteria to a new very subjective and slippery standard of “clinically meaningful.” And apparently the FDA and Pazdur don’t believe that extending the life of a Breast Cancer victim by 3 to 5 months or more is “Clinically Meaningful.”
How do you put a price tag on those precious months for the families who are living through the hell of losing a Mother, Sister, Daughter, Aunt or Wife? Taking Avastin off label is nothing more then government rationing of healthcare. Period.
Americans with cancer live much longer than similar victims in other nations. Traditionally the FDA has not based its decisions on the cost of drug or biologic treatment, but solely on the effectiveness of the treatment. This approach seems to be changing as Obamacare is being implemented and the rationing of healthcare soon begins.
If you knew you could take a drug and perhaps live another year, would you take it? The government will now be making that decision for you.
Members of Congress should demand a briefing from the FDA/Dr. Pazdur before any action is taken to deny breast cancer patients access to treatment that may extend their lives. No one is suggesting Avastin is a perfect drug, however it has proven to be an effect treatment for some patients. We should not deny those patients access to a treatment that may extend their lives. The removal of Avastin is the Obama’s Administrations second attack on breast cancer patients, earlier this year they changed the mammography standard from 40 to 50, which could result in millions of women going undiagnosed.

3 months ago, I sat beside my mother on her death-bed until she took her last breath. She’d been battling cancer for 2 years with both positives and negatives playing her emotions pretty much on a regular basis. And they way the progression transpired, the cancer was aggressive in growth and brutal in its invasiveness that she accepted the knowledge and inevitably realized her time was limited. She just turned 70, but her looks, attitude and active life would’ve fooled anyone to think she was in her late 50’s. There were no drugs or treatments that would save her, only extend her life instead. A final PET Scan determined what we already knew. Eight days later she was gone.
If anything, I’m glad it happened when it did. Had it been any later, those two years we had with her may not have been experienced at all. The scary part now, is the many loved ones in my family, including myself that will likely be susceptible to the scheme known as Obama Health Care.
Denying patients access to Avastin and remodeling mammography standards by adding 10 additional years is just a drop in the bucket of what we can expect with this health care fiasco. Pelosi was right, now that the plan passed, we’ll truly see just what’s in it after all. Not exactly what Americans wanted but in holding true to the philosophy of this current administration; who gives a phuck what the American people think anyway?

The author clearly forgot the disclaimer: "This message brought to you by Genentech." Actually, Genentech is too smart to make false claims. All you have to do is visit the Avastin website. Then look under the breast cancer tab:
"Currently, there are no data available showing that Avastin improves disease-related symptoms or survival in HER2-negative MBC." (MBC is Metastatic Breast Cancer aka Stage 4).
Fact is, a supine FDA approved Avastin a few years back for use in breast cancer over the objections of a panel of outside experts (they were 5 to 4 against). Wikipedia: "The panel expressed concern that data from the clinical trial did not show any increase in quality of life or prolonging of life for patients – two important benchmarks for late-stage cancer treatments."
This clearly isn't about Obamacare. That's just an argument aimed at the sort of dullards who believe anything they read on rightwing blogs. If the drug is not scientifically proved effective for a specific illness, why should it be approved for use for that illness? If that is the conclusion of experts, it should not be reimbursed by either private insurance companies or public health plans.

So we're going to see other types of rationing based on all sorts of biased bigoted reasons. For example, count on a round about regulation that essentially sticks it to anyone of brown skin with the claim that "certain people" use the health care system more so should pay more. Progressives always practice racism, they just do it in round about ways through indirect laws. They don't prevent blacks from working in their work places, they just insist on a bachelor's degree… which happens to be far more attainable to whites than blacks due to black poverty issues.
So count on a whole host of limits. The claim will be health care is universal but OOOPS what a coincidence, YOU can't get it or YOU pay more AND you can't go anywhere else for health care cause its monopolized.
Also count on health care being a lifestyle manipulation tool. Essentially whatever the PC crowd doesn't like will be deemed "harmful" and if you do not stop doing it you will be denied health care OR part of the health care prescription will be you will have to do X or you get no more care. Acceptance ONLY if its the narrow group of choices one special interest group wants you to have.
This is called Lifeboating. Imagine one of those ship disaster movies in which the survivors are all in a giant rubber raft. Everyone has to sit. Nobody can do anything different (like stand) cause any action you take effects everyone else in the boat. All resources are evenly distributed. Everyone is equal… equally trapped and miserable. Ok so there needs to be more research done into the drug. The real problem here is the gov has now essentially monopolized who pays so now drugs will be discarded according to a single panel… a monopoly. This article DOES focus on exactly the problem a lot of us are concerned with. Since the gov is feverishly trying to monopolize health care, the choice to use this drug is essentially removed not only from the patients but from the insurance company.
yes the private insurance company can say "this drug appears to be ineffective and so we won't pay for it" but in a private market system there may exists provider who WOULD allow the use of the drug.
Under a single payer, gov monopoly NO CHANCE of that exists when the gov has monopolized the decision. We don't have to go any farther than already existing health care systems like Sweden, Canada etc who already make decisions who will or won't get that extra 5 years on a drug or a hip replacement or a pace maker.
This is an issue of monopolies.

Oh, boy. Health care is one of my favorite subjects as health care finance plays a central role in my everyday career work.
Okay, here comes the bad news and the good news and while the bad news is bad, the good news is actually incredibly good – so good in fact, you will be stunned by your good fortune.
Let's start with the bad news. Obamacare won't work; not now, not ever. The purpose of Obamacare is to allow liberal-progressives (the ruling class) to control your behavior for the purposes of allowing the liberal-progressive movement the opportunity to continue to rule you for their exclusive profit and at your sole risk and expense. For those that believe government can be efficient in this endeavor I have some bad news; it is not mathematically possible or economical for the government to be the provider as the system will ALWAYS (as in 100% of the time) end up having to ration care because it distorts the market and market distortions AUTOMATICALLY result in rationing and shortages due to the application of an economic principle called "Rational Choice Theory". This means that Obamacare is going to wrack up some very impressive losses and add approximately $1.4 trillion to our national debt over the next 6 years (the actual expected case and not the glorified rose-tinted glasses case that government economists always use to sell you a new entitlement program). It will indeed be catastrophic and a lot of people are going to be made to suffer and many more are going to die who don't have to die – no matter how the FDA classifies Avastin and the other drugs they will have to ration so that the ruling class can have free health care and you can pay for it. This will destroy itself within 6 years because the system financing mechanism isn't workable. So within the next 6 years, Obamacare will be instrumental in destroying our economy and ushering in a new reign of economic and political tyranny.

How about we improve the system so it doesn't cost BILLIONS of dollars to get a single drug approved by the fda, enact some tort reform that blocks "frivolous" lawsuits, and thus make the drugs affordable for MOST Americans to PURCHASE FOR THEMSELVES. Thus driving down the cost further by allowing people to seek the lowest price for their prescription. Thus SHRINKING the number of people who's lives depend on "insurance" or the "government." And thus making it more affordable to pay for the truly destitute.

The good news is that there is a method of providing universal health care that uses a totally different approach to paying for the costs of health care services (all types of health care – vision, dental, mental, long-term care, hospitals, drugs – you name it, all of it is included in the plan) that does not discriminate, doesn't care about your pre-existing conditions and provides the means for controlling costs and eliminating excessive litigation.
Here's the kicker: it does this without a dime of taxpayer money. Not one cent.
The Universal Health Care Benefit Program ("UHCBP" – also known as "Health Plus" – a component program of "The Fix – Capitalism Version 2.0") costs each American $30 per month. Your copayment under this plan is always 2% for everything but electives (they cost you a copayment of 7%). Health Plus pays all costs on a current basis using a different kind of payment model than the traditional insurance model – it uses defeasance.
The outflow is that Health Plus allows for expanded access because, after the near-term window, the system would be flooded with new physicians and health care workers who can now pay a pittance for their state-of-the-art medical educations under this system's "sister program" (called "Education Plus"). Health Plus does not use naked deficit spending, no taxation and no limits. It is designed to automatically seek out fraud (and permanently eliminate fraudsters from both accessing future services and from working in the industry), eliminate excessive litigation costs, reduce capital finance costs and reduce operating costs by dramatically increasing competition and paying all claims on a same-day basis.
It's the future and it can be ours as soon as we want it.

I am a proponent of Health Plus. It addresses that annoying taxation problem, among a zillion other things that you so skillfully pointed out. As sorebird pointed out in a post on a previous article…..Why should congress make money on my health care? Answer: Only to pay for their own stupid socialist ideas.

First off, I have a masters in developmental neurobiology. I have spent several years working for Abbott Labs in north Chicago. I have also spent several years working for the DCI (Department of Clinical Investigations) for the USAF at Lackland AFB in San Antonio Texas.
Reason why I just posted part of my resume is because I do know what I'm talking about.
To start, trolls, STFU. You don't know wwhat you are talking about. As an investigator looking for efficacy of target compounds, you see a variety of results that may not be included in the conventional paradigm. For example the target compound may need just an OH group added to enable it to become more effacatious. Only research would tell. With the advent of obamacare, we can soon say goodbye to target compounds just because it wouldn't be cost effective any more to research. Death panels, re-wording of protocols, politics have become the new standard bearer for medicine under obamacare.
As a researcher, you take any compound that shows a glimmer of positive results and work that like obama at a telepromtor clearance sale. What is happening now is a sad disgusting result of what happens when politics gets in the way of science. As for the experiencee of socialized medicine, living in England for 11 years has taught me a valuable lesson as to the differences between our two countries approach to healthcare.
