Bailouts Defeat Bennett–Who Wants to Be Next?
by Capitol ConfidentialSen. Bob Bennett suffered a stunning defeat in his quest for re-election Saturday. And as the Senate considers the Obama/Dodd financial ‘reform’ bill, other Senators should be asking themselves if they want to be next.
Bennett, representing the most conservative state in the country, was defeated for a number of reasons but none more obvious that his steadfast support for the Wall Street Bailout. When it came to his vote for the first Bush bailout, Bennett didn’t give an inch defending it all the way to his concession speech.
As political prognosticators read the tea leaves, a CNN interview with a local Tea Party activist perhaps provides the most insightful commentary. It could not be clearer, grass roots conservatives see support of bailouts as anathema to free market principles; period. Politicians have now been formally warned — support for bailouts of corporations and big banks is political suicide.
The real question is — is anyone listening. The Senate is considering a bailout bill that makes the TARP vote that defeated Sen. Bennett look like chump change. Sen. Corker, Collins and Grassley pay close attention here. The Obama/Dodd bill is a bailout bill that favors big banks and Wall Street over Main Street. It’s no different than supporting TARP — just more expensive and now contains a laundry list of intrusive Big Brother provisions like a national database that tracks citizens’ deposits and withdrawals.
And the bill is getting worse by the minute. Sen. Kay Hagan is preparing an amendment that will create another national database to track and approve or disapprove individual installment loans. Yes, you heard that right. Under the Hagan amendment, individual citizens would need the approval of the Federal government before taking out an installment loan.
Hagan’s amendment would limit consumers to no more than six and as few as one loan per year during a 12-month period for “covered” loans which include even some retail company credit plans. So for example, if a consumer uses Home Depot’s installment plan to buy a washing machine, he better pray the dishwasher doesn’t break because under Hagan’s amendment our consumer may not be able to buy a dishwasher (or anything else) for 275 days.
Of course, Hagan’s amendment exempts big banks and “traditional lenders” from these provisions.
Federalism has been so decimated that U.S. Senators apparently have no second thoughts enacting such an amendment. But Bennett’s ouster should give every member of the US Senate pause. Bennett may have represented a conservative state but support for bailouts has been clearly opposed by the majority of the electorate from across the political spectrum. Voting for the Financial Reform bill is like voting for TARP all over again — even worse.

The fact that they are even discussing this bill means they haven't gotten the message, or they just don't care. More likely the latter.
What has happened to the republic our forefathers gave us?
The fed gov has become the British Empire of the 1700s. Our forefathers would be declaring independence from this tyranical, sociaIist government! They would be fighting for freedom!
2010 and 2012 are RINO Season. We're not kidding when we said that.
Politicians think, or have thought, that we need them, we need them like a case of hemorrhoids, the time has come to dump every commie-liberal and shellack the rest on Nov. 2, 2010 – Obama will thank us, he have time for his golf game and maybe a few rounds with Tiger so long as he does not want to play with himself.
Something that everyone is overlooking in this discussion, four years ago Senator Bennett supported the horrendous amnesty bill. That fact alone is what got me to the neighborhood caucus in March.
The first rule about digging yourself into to a ditch is to stop digging. Let the libsDems and RINOs keep digging.
Approval from the gov for an installment loan? How does this not make it to top of talking points for republicans. this is mind blowing stuff. The gov. screwed the system up, evidence:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CgJq8OYEl0&fe... now they are using it as an excuse to track and control us. This amendment , as well as this footage should be storming the news but its all half ass terror all the time. What gives?
I personally, like many Americans, am fed up with the pathetic evolutionary decline of the American politician. Being sick and tired of the repeated mantra, “I will vote for what I feel is best for my state”, I’ll give each politician a quarter so they can buy a clue; Until you represent and vote the WILL OF THE MAJORITY OF YOUR CONSTITUENTS, rather than your personal agenda or party line, Americans will vote your ass out of office. This daily condescending tone delivered to the average American by these hacks is getting lame and people have had it. “Question of Responsible”, a great explanation.
These tired political drones remind me of the cartoon seen years ago titled “Last act of Defiance”. Bennett showed that same attitude. The picture depicts a mouse flipping the middle finger while looking up at an eagle swooping down on his next meal (the mouse). Needless to say, politicians who think like that can flip Americans off all day long if they like but as the gentleman said in his interview, “his career will end over that vote”.
"Federalism has been so decimated that U.S. Senators apparently have no second thoughts enacting such an amendment. But Bennett’s ouster should give every member of the US Senate pause."
All of the shitheads in the senate are too self absorbed to think they will suffer any consequences for their votes. We must use this year's elections to show them that there are consequences, and that "We the People" are no longer playing around.
Just like the gentleman in the video, I'm tired of being labelled "right wing". To want a limited government, lower taxes for all, have all people in the US pay taxes (limiting welfare for those that truely need it), secure borders, a strong military, in other words, use the Constitution as the defining document the rules our lives, is not "right wing". It is simply RIGHT. As in correct. As in the way this country should work towards restoring.
Why do all the bills opposing financial reform use the moniker "Capitol Confidential." Is it because they don't want the reader to know who is really behind the opposition? (i.e., the big banks)
One of the biggest issues with getting the message through to the Senate, is that there are only 36 out of 100 Senators up for reelection in 2010. And 12 of those Senators up for reelection are retiring. This is a real problem. Remember that the average Senator believes the average voter has no long term memory; that "their seat" will be safe in future elections as the People forget about today's issues.
We can impact this mindset. If your Senator has been part of the problem in Washington; if they are not up for reelection this year; and if your State allows for the recall of your State's representatives, find out if anyone has started a recall petition and support it. Consider starting a petition if no one else has. Even if you don't think a recall effort would succeed, just the threat of recall alone would create pressure on those Senators not currently up for reelection.
I am personally supporting the recall effort in New Jersey of Senator Menendez. If recall is not an option in your State, consider supporting the efforts in another State. Let all incumbents know that they are not automatically "safe" just because they are not currently up for reelection.
If you really want an answer, click on the byline.
Folks are starting to wake up… they still don't see the depth of the problem, but they are starting to.
Capitalism is based on the idea that folks will use captial to invest in companies which make things, or perform services (ie capital is doing somthing). In the last 20-30 years however, a whole slew of "investments" have been created that are nothing more than bets as to whether somthing is going to go up or down in price…
Case in point, the Real Estate "Derivatives". Those derivatives don't contain the actual Mortgage, they are simply bets as to whether they increase in price, and how much. The Capital thus involved in those "bets" are NOT invested in creating real goods or companies, but is sitting in betting pools doing nothing productive (it changes hands, but thats it).
As many people made money off these bets the last few years, more and more capital was invested into these "betting pools" (ie, hedge funds)… and more real banking and finance companies got involved as well., thus taking MORE Capital out of the productive side of the economy (that which actualy produces goods or services).
Next, the gov't will be deciding how many times a day I can use the bathroom and how long I can spend on the toilet. Overdrawn? Cross your legs and wait for tomorrow.
Until we get a handle on Wallstreet's Vegas mentality… Mainstream America will continue to suffer…
Folks know somthing is wrong… they are not sure what yet (thanks to the silence of the media)… but are starting to say "you are part of the problem… not the solution".
An excellent article. Sen. Hagan knows full well that her amendment would give big banks an unfair advantage over more efficient and nimble small businesses while taking away American's choices. With this bill, we'll see which Republican is really free market friendly or whether they are spineless big government RINO's. Let the Bennett episode be a warning, we will vote out those danged RINO's.
the "big banks" are FOR these bills. if you read the article, you will see that all of these "reform" bills are just more handouts for the big banks and Wall Street firms.
The next bailout is coming and it will make the last three look like chicken feed.
The "government union" pension systems in every state are about to collapse and you guessed it, the tax payer will be stuck holding the bag.
AGAIN!
Why do "government unions" exist…?
Exactly which "evil employers" are they bargaining against..?
Government exists to serve the will of the people, it is high time we eliminate unions from all levels of government and return to service of, by and for the people.
Government employees must not be allowed to serve two masters any longer, especially those that can purchase loyalty in direct conflict of their duties to the people and to the republic.
Well, they already control how much water your toilet is allowed to use for each flush. Putting a meter on the number of flushes seems like a logical next step.
No kidding. Because I object to a huge federal bailout to Citibank( there is $600B of bondholder equity in the company), I am an extreme radical, and a member of the Tea Party movement..
Besides, Bennet is not Conservative, he voted on several Statist type bills.
If this bill passes and the installment loan deal is in there, we will at that time officially cross the line from Republic to Socialistic States. If the government is approving PRIVATE financing then all freedom of privacy is GONE. This is trully amazing that I haven't seen this anywhere, who is suppressing it? I'm concerned that the bureacrats are pushing us to revolt to push us down with our own military into submission, the cards are lining up and the pressure is about to make them start falling which will give executive powers to the president to "Squash the Uprising". I thought that this would be absurb 6 months ago, you know just another liberal president to suffer through but this agenda from the pres to the congress is starting to take form and is right in front of our eyes. Am I missing something?
The attitude of "how dare you deprive this Senator of his seat!" drives me crazy. Neither Bennett nor any other senator or congressman has a "right" to sit in Congress. They serve at the pleasure of their constituents. Even the very best senator can and should be given his walking papers if the voters decide someone else will do a better job representing them.
Let's face it, no matter how conservative Bennett has been in the past, 17 years is long enough as a Senator. The man is 76 years old. Time to retire. I am sure he made enough cash off lobbyists and sweetheart deals to retire quite nicely.
Bye, bye Bennett.
WHY THE HELL ARE WORRIED ABOUT A JOB WHEN YOUR IN YOUR 70'S? I read another article where he was going to put himself on the ballot as a write on,,,, some of these people are in there upper 80's or 90's in Congress, YYYYYYY. It has to be the corruption and power because it's surely not for the $170G a year. NEW LAW: NO ONE OVER 70 IS ALLOWED TO SERVE IN CONGRESS AND NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO SERVE MORE THAN 15YRS PERIOD.
Here's a clue it's about the CONSTITUTION support it or get OUT!
EXACTLY! Stop the damn spending. My goodness, tone deafness must be contagious in DC.
It could not be clearer, grass roots conservatives see support of bailouts as anathema to free market principles; period. Politicians have now been formally warned — support for bailouts of corporations and big banks is political suicide. (Courtesy of Capitol Confidential)
The message could not be any clearer. Remember to Vote in Nov. 2010 and 2012.
More of Washington's shenanigans and we'll be back to that republic sooner than we think.
Time has come to close the lid on Congress and Flush!
Well said and agree 100%
The Dems kicked the can forward as far as they could with Fannie and Freddie,……………
and the Reps. made an attempt to bring in the reins on this runaway program,………………
BUT FAILED,…………….what ever the reasons is not important now,……….the damage has been done.
The goal of the Obama administration is to,……………….
kick as many PROGRESSIVE cans forward as possible,……………..knowing full well,………….
Republicans inherently lack the required unity to kick them back,………….however,…………….
thanks to the Tea Party movement,…………….there is a new day dawning,………….
The ouster of Bennett was the first ray of sunlight from that dawn.
Hate to be a Cassandra, but I still worry that the populace as a whole is still on the MSM opiates. Fox Poll today shows Americans by slim majority think Dems in Congress doing better jobs than GOP. Also shows 2010 elections close. I have come around to Dick Morris viewpoint that the worst Republican is better than the best Democrat. From what I have seen the past year I do not believe the Dems should ever be trusted with the reins of power again. But most of the country is just clueless and uniformed ( or maybe socialism is just fine with them). If Burns loses in PA we are in real trouble IMHO. The job will not end in 2010 with less than a landslide. WE need supramajorities as far as the eye can see to actually repeal this stuff and get back to some semblance of what this country should stand for.
What good do unions do? They tell their members we will fight for your rights at work as long as you pay the fee we tell you to pay. Oh and by the way we will tell you who to vote for and who to donate your money to and etc… Unions basically tell there members what to do and what is astonishing about that is they do exactly as they are told, I know there are some people out there that think for themselves but they are a small amount of the member in the unions.
Here is a question for some one that is a member of a union: Why do you not same the money you pay in dues to the union and fight for your own rights to work?
They believe they are entitled to their seats due to how long they have been in that seat. We The People are sending them a wake up call about their entitlement (Scott Brown elected to Kennedy seat, Mollahan losing in the primary, Benette losing in the primary). If the sitting officials can not see that We The People are going to do every thing with in our rights to change the direction of our country and how our elected officials run our country, then they should be removed from office at the as soon as possible.
Missy8s, well said. Seems gov. workers unions kind of a redundancy.
Make sure you have a plunger in case it backs up!
These bills are passed, not for solving problems but for creating wealth for themselves, or creating voting blocks they can manipulate to keep themselves in power. This drives me nuts. This has to end starting in November.
There you go Voice of Treason, dont refute the article, attack the author. I see you've been studying Alinsky's playbook.
Bennett is chump change.
http://www.worldreports.org/news/289_biden_geithn...
And if the politicians who win in November don't immediately act as though they've gotten the message we will all be in very big trouble. If voters feel that voting in new leadership didn't work then God help us. The vote in November is the only thing keeping mass rebellion from occurring right now.
This will be the fight of the century.
There will be no accountability in DC until politicians quiver in fear behind their office doors, afraid that throngs of law abiding citizens will physically remove them from office, rather than wait for the polls to open in four years.
Respectfully, and Purposefully Submitted,
They vote for it , we will vote them out of office. Pure suicide.
Good job Utah — Americans are very proud of you. Fear is gripping Washington incumbents and we're taking back our government. Let's not ever stop.
I agree some what with your sentiments, however a number of brokerage houses serve as "market makers". What this means if an individual wants to sell a thousand shares of stock in XYZ but there are only offers to buy 700 shares, in order to ensure liquidity in the market a brokerage house will buy the extra 300 shares whether or not it is their best investment interest to do so. They hedge their investments in order to remain solvent.
Perhaps it has gotten out off hand, but it is integral with investing. Maybe an expert could explain better.
Yep, every politician needs to watch this over and over…you will be terminated over your vote…even if it is one vote…if it takes MY MONEY!
Dude, if you are actually that dense…then it explains a lot!!!
The leftists in Washington are self serving oligarchists. They are into picking winners and losers. They dont like free markets because it be definition is not under their control.
Voice of Treason – your mom wants you to clean up your room
By his own words (both in this clip and as quoted in local Utah paper here) Senator Bennett does not regret the votes he cast that were contrary to the wishes of his constituents. That's the real reason he didn't survive long enough to even make it into the Republican primary for that Senate seat. He voted his own interests, and not those of the people he represented. That is all anyone need know regarding Senator Bennett's defeat in the nomination process.
I don't think Bob Bennett could get elected to his local school board right now. The writing is on the wall and these politicians should heed the warning. Vote the will of your constituents, or we'll take your ball, and you'll go home with nothing.
You have no reason.
Throw all of the BUM'S out. It is a new day in America.
Restore the Republic,
God Bless America
Thats right, they better just pray tar-and-feathering does not become the "in" thing.
WHAT???!!
"Hagan’s amendment would limit consumers to no more than six and as few as one loan per year during a 12-month period for “covered” loans which include even some retail company credit plans. They can kiss my money-spending, voting a$$. ARGH!
Dodd isn't even running again, so he could care less. He flipping the bird to America on his way out. The next Congress should retroactively yank pensions from any Senator who was too dumb to realize he got a beneficial interest rate from a company he was in charge of legislation for.
Geezz CNN – it's never his seat and at least he stands by his vote !!!! More than I cna say for a lot of CROOKS in Congress!!!!
This is America .. he vcan go find work on the private sector now ….what's left of it !!!
About time he got off my nipple ….
How is it that Obama could spend the first year and a half of his presidency apologizing for his view that the US has been arrogant in dealing with the world, then he picks up the phone and arrogantly demands that Germany throw more money in the black hole that is Greece? Bail-out mania is the rage.
I am hoping that Michael Bennet (D-CO) gets his clock cleaned this November. He is progressive to the bone.
They don't care. They are operating as if there will be no accountability for their actions. The only way a politician would ever do such a thing is if they have a plan to avoid accountability. Stay tuned.
Our forefathers had the courage of their convictions; they literally risked their lives because they had core values which would not let them willingly accept slavery.
We have a comfortable life with our full refrigerators and high-definition televisions. We have already accepted slavery if we refuse to leave our comfortable lives to put everything on the line as our forefathers did.
We will soon see what will happen.
PUT THE BONG DOWN….do it for all of us and really think of your Mom
We are celebrating the retirement of "Cryin' George" Voinovich in my state. Whoever replaces Cryin' George will be no more RINO than he, for sure. Can we put a Conservative in that seat? Time will tell…
if a CNN lefty is whinning about his career ending over one vote….THEN……Guess what HE DAYUM SURE AIN"T WORTH KEEPIN
That's the scary elephant in the room that nobody is willing to talk about, even the good guys. Why do they feel so comfortable? Is there something coming that they know about and we don't? The comfort level suggests there are some assurances that things will work out for them, and they seem to believe them. Scary stuff.
Good luck with that seat.
Florio? He's been gone since the 90s. Unfortunately there is still Lautenberg, who also needs to go. Another arrogant SOB.
You're not missing anything. The Obama/Union train is out of control. Hopefully these recent Primary shocks, and Fox News, and Talk Radio, and good people like Andrew Breitbart, Hannity, Glenn Beck, Neil Cavuto, Rush,
Michelle Malkin, Michelle Bachman, Eric Bolling, Monica Crowley Liz Trotta, Jon Scott, Stuart Varney, Steve Doocey, Gretchen Carlson, Brian Kilmeade, William La Jeunesse, Tracy Byrnes, and Charles Payne and more,
will continue their great exposes regarding the encroaching Socialism. They are on 24/7 which does help, and they have great guests, and We The People are guests of Andrew Breitbart here, and that's a lot of Americans so lets just keep writing and we will win. Remember, there are about 200 Million of us. We have the numbers! TeaParty Nurse, NJ
Whcih reminds me. Term Limits for ALL OF THEM! and no lifetime Judges either. 10 yrs is enough for them.

Right, and Fox News helps too with their constant reminders of what you just stated, with the exception of Greta Van Susteren who is pushing for Amnesty like crazy, and feels "sorry for Coakley in Mass" and she strolls around D.C. giving conservatives a hard time. Why do we have her down there helping Obama. We don't need her, or Jane Skinner, or Shep Smith, or Lis Wheil, Geraldo (the worst) or Shannon Bream. However talk radio and Fox do a good job trying to save America from Socialism; and keep Govt out of the Immigration thing. They will just give Amnesty to 12 Mil Illegals to get a Voting Block. That's why they want Puerto Rico to become a state, for the votes for Obama et. al. If Pres Eisenhower can deport Millions of Illegals, we can too. Every day of the week until they're all gone, and the boarders are secured. Will help with terrorism too because they're coming in thru Mexico.

One by one we'll elect Representatives that will be aware that:
1- That they need to be transparent with America regarding Legislation, and no more rushing it through.
2- That they need to lower Taxes and stop spending 3- That they need to clean up this country and close the boarders, and uphold The Constitution and States laws. 4- That they need to stop bailing out any industries or countries. We're bankrupt ourselves.5- Stop the arrogance and listen to "We The People"
6- Don't attempt to control or Unionize our Health Care, Industries, Free Markets, Railways,Airlines, or The Internet.
7- Stop trying to Socialize America. Return our culture and stop editing our childrens Textbooks. Return the real
History of America to the Textbooks 8- Stop brainwashing our College Students with Radical Liberal concepts that destroy Freedoms. Open College classrooms to prevent assignments from professors that indoctrinate our children. We pay their tuition. 9- Stop trying to destroy America from the inside out in order to claim that The Fed Govt is the only one that can save us. Welcome Communism. No, We have to reverse Obama's Socialist Legislation.

40 bags and 40 barrels.
His career did end over that one vote.
You shouldn't point the sights at only the RINOs. Point them at anyone who voted for bailouts or who votes for increasing taxes or that voted for fiscally irresponsible legislation. It all starts with the fiscal health of this country.
If we don't address that, nothing else matters when we truly come to the point of being Greece. I fear that if we don't succeed in November that we will become Greece sooner than anyone expects.
10 years is long enough for all legislatures to get things done and be experienced (but not jaded) by the end of term. I like it. Even in private business people start looking for the next job after much less time.
This jerk epitomizes the Washington politiian. Good for Utah voters who recoginzed they were nothing more than dupes in the hands of a unremorseful hack!
AMEN!!! Right on spot, Dave! Bennett couldn't need the money. It's all about power with some of these people.
This last week…an extremely significant event took place…the U.S. CBO revised its projections involving the USA “tipping point”, they changed the projection from the year 2023 to this year 2010…that is a 13 year escalation…and NO NEWS COVERAGE ANYWHERE!
You ask what is the “tipping point” = when the USA reaches the 60% DEBT TO GNP RATIO.
So what is news about a full decade+ escalation to the “tipping point”???
FACT: NO COUNTRY IN WORLD HISTORY HAS EVER SURVIVED SUSTAINING THE TIPPING POINT.
The PREDOMINATE MASS of USA sofa-dumb-fuxxx zombies will never turn away for even a moment from being glued to the MEDIA PROPAGATED TALKING HEADS…TO COMPREHEND THAT THE USA = THE TITANIC.
You see the arrogant SOX’s from the supposed opposition party, the “republicans” including ALL OF the “right elites” (were then, and remain to this date COMPLICIT) sat back and did absolutely nothing about the USURPER part of the Obama phenomena…in fact, THE MAJORITY OF THEM joined in on the “birther” tactic as the icing on this poisoned-cake.
HISTORY WILL SHOW, the FAKE “opposition party” was equally to blame for the USA TITANIC.
ARROGANT ELITES ON THE RIGHT THINKING FOR YOU, IS NOT ANY DIFFERENT THAN ARROGANT ELITES ON THE LEFT THINKING FOR THE OBOTS…NONE OF THE GOVERNMENT-MEDIA ILK [LEFT-MIDDLE-RIGHT] DID ANYTHING ABOUT THIS MASSIVE BREACH OF THE CONSTITUTION…WHEN THE SHIP FINALLY SINKS, AND ALL OF YOUR LUXURIES ARE GONE, NEVER FORGET THESE SOX’S THAT DID NOTHING!

If you watched the post-primary interview you would have heard the Utah Senator say, "I did what I thought was right for the country." I hope the congressional hopefuls get this message; You work for us. 'Us" hasn't an 'I'. If these professional public servants can't get it through their thick skulls that they represent us collectively, not making unilateral decisions for the good of the lobbyists, er, I mean country, then there will be another roll-over at the end of their term. We do have term limits, and it is the voting booth.
I agree. Someone needs to get to Ailes and convince him to get rid of Greta. She asks the stupidest "follow up" questions and really cannot follow the logic of her guests. Last night she was feebly defending our bailout of Greece on notion things would be worse if we do not. She could not follow guest's point that all it does is delay the inevitable and when it comes time to pay piper it will be worse and the US will be on the hook for more.
Yes! I saw that too! She is staunch in her Progressive beliefs, and your "feeble" description is perfect. I wasn't one bit surprised that Greta pushed so had for another Bail-out! especially in a foreign country like Greece! No way. Talk about Tone Deaf!!
She goes right along with Progressive thinking. She hammers Steve Moore on a regular basis too, poor guy. He's a capitalist who talks commen sense and Free Markets, but Greta has no patience for that.
- I too hope that Ailes gets rid of her. She's a narrow minded Liberal and a loose cannon down there in D.C.and does not do a good job at all.

DQ: We saw that, too. Infuriated us. We got especially ticked off when she kept "acting stupid" when Senator Orin Hatch was trying to say that the Progressives were being STEALTHY. We turned her off after that.

But, she hastened to ask, “should a man’s career end because of one vote?” His answer was perfect: “His career WILL end with that vote.” And it did. What will they do when millions of us, armed to the teeth, march on Washington, DC and start throwing them out of their offices, out of DC, maybe even out of the country??!
This is an example of win-win. Bennett has compromised his integrity and morality and has been financially rewarded for selling himself out. The public feels relieved that they have eliminated a scumbag and can now feel hope. Bennett will fade into an ultra wealthy retirement and the folks that threw him out will get a tainted replacement. Now that I think of it there is only one winner Bennett.
