If one were trying to manufacturing fraudulent votes, absentee ballots would be a great place to start. In many cases stacks of these have been turned in at one time, making it impossible to verify that an individual voter submitted each ballot.

UPDATE: This Boston Globe story reports that Isabel Melendez is a community activist in Lawrence. She ran for mayor of the city in 2001, losing out by just over 900 votes.

In MA you can walk around with absentee ballots – aid people in completing them (including marking them for the candidate you support) – turn them in at the end of the day and then the votes are counted along with the people that actually took the time to go vote, or request an absentee ballot and then mail it?

I am one of the northern Minnesota voters defrauded by Al Franken and I am not happy. The ballots that were "found" were supposedly from a community just a few miles from me. There are just not enough voters in the area for it to have been legit, even if they all voted for Smally/Franken.

However lets get one fact straight. If she is from Puerto Rico she IS a US citizen. ( The Jones-Shafroth Act (1917), applies to the grant of citizenship to all citizens of Puerto Rico. Also known as the "Jones Act of Puerto Rico" or "Jones Law of Puerto Rico", it amended the "Organic Act of Puerto Rico" created by the Foraker Act of 1900. (This "Jones Act" applies only to Puerto Rico.) The act was signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson on March 2, 1917.)
With that said someone should look into the ballots she submits.

The only exceptions should be for those who are incapacitated or who absolutely cannot be in their district, and the process should require extreme identification. You should have to file an affidavit with the ballot as well affirming that it was impossible for you to be there. Also, students and "snow birds" should have to vote ONLY in their home district, with verification. Don't tell me it can't be done. It can.

It looks to me like every voting precinct in America is going to need to be manned from start to finish in November by honest Americans live streaming the voter fraud that is likely to be taking place. Isabelle Melendez, a.k.a. "The Great Cornholio" needs to do some time for her crime. I would've taken those ballots away from her and suffered the consequences but I guess cooler heads are needed on the streets to document the extensive fraud going on.

In unionized nursing homes, it's common practice for the nursing aides to order absentee ballots for the patients, some of whom haven't been lucid for years, and they fill out the ballots for the patient, in favor of their own candidate. Goes on all the time. If you have loved ones in a nursing home, you should check and see how many times they've voted!

I called the Lawrence police, who passed the buck to Lawrence mayor, Lantigua’s office. His staffer laughed. I then called MA Secretary of the Commonwealth, William Galvin’s office. I was informed that the FBI and Lawrence police had investigated but had found nothing illegal. I instructed them to watch the videio, and answer if it was not illegal for this woman to have a stack of blank absentee ballots, and hand them out instructing people, who might not even legally have the right to vote, to vote for her candidate. He agreed that it wasn’t legal, and claimed not to have seen the video.. I very much doubt that. Please get everyone you know to call Galvin’s office and raise a ruckus 617-727-9180 otherwise they'll let this and other such shenanigans slide.

Years ago, there was a story on a right-wing message board by a guy who explained why he cast a vote for Dianne Feinstein for Senate in California. He had volunteered to drive people to the polls for the local Republicans and was sent to pick up a blind woman, who asked him to accompany her into the voting booth to help her vote. As he asked her who she wanted to vote for, it became clear the woman was asking him to vote straight-line Democrat. He didn't start arguing with her in the booth to try to persuade her to vote Republican. He didn't just vote Republican for her against her wished (he could have, since she was blind). He voted the way she asked him to. And that was the only right thing for him to do in those circumstances. Votes don't belong to anyone other than the person who casts them.

'deadline to apply' is not the same as deadline to submit. what is the deadline date for receipt? postmarked by election day? what, if any, info is required for the application? is the application in any way linked to a valid voter? where did she get the ballots? can anybody pick up a blank ballot at their neighborhood post office? or is there some kind of control of the distribution of ballots? did she go through some application process to obtain them? if legally obtained and return was not required before today (or by today) then her behavior is suspect, if not criminal.

That answers the most important question you pose. For the others, I don't know enough about Massachusetts State Law to have answers to the rest, nor do I really care honestly. All the states are a little different in that regard, when it comes to non-federal elections. It sure does leave a lot open for tampering tho. And at roughly 1:00 p.m.mst today, the Boston Globe had announced that Coakely had already won 50 to 49, with 8 hours left till the polls closed…

To clarify, the ballot cannot be turned in at the polling place,.
It may be hand delivered no later than the close of the election.
Must be sent or given to the Elections Board or Official.
If mailed it must be postmarked no later than the election date.
So Here again there is a huge loophole, since someone else can pick up your absentee ballot for you. And they can turn it in for you. And this would explain how they end up all over the place and get found later. What isn't mailed will have no postmark. The Election Official would have to swear they had received it on time…..

Someone from Mass, please help me understand! Ever since I was of voting age, I voted, except one year when I was called out of town on business and missed voting. I vowed at that time I would never miss another election (local, state or national) and signed up to use the absentee ballot. One year I realized I had forgotten to mail it in, and went to vote in person. I was amazed that they would NOT let me vote "in person" but was told I could go home, complete my absentee ballot, put in the (special) envelope, seal and sign it and return to the polling place to turn it in. I was pleasantly surprised at the checks and balances. Each absentee ballot is mailed with a return colored envelope with specific notations indicating the election. If you misplace your return envelope….. too bad – that's the good news. How can someone have access to blank ballots, sign up and turn in absentee ballots – no signed envelopes (control document for submission)? Suggestion next!

Here's my suggestion based on my experience: It is very obvious that there are people who are willing to do criminal acts re voter fraud. It diminishes our right to honest elections that we hold near and dear to our hearts and they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I think we need to also focus on the people that are ACCEPTING these bogus ballots – they are just as criminal as the people doing this! Sign up to volunteer at your local precincts to work "inside" to ensure the bogus ballots are not accepted. I was so grateful to have an honest precinct volunteer advise me regarding my absentee ballot. Don't judge those that use them. Most of the time is due to heavy work/travel schedules and they want to ensure their votes are counted.

I think it is time to ask another country or the UN to come in and monitor our elections. Obviously we can't do it the right way. Don't absentee ballots have to be mailed? If i can just fill one out and turn it in, how is it different from standing in line. Don't they have to be signed? I think that all absentee ballots should be mailed out to the person and mailed back. No other way to have the vote count.

Absolutely correct. I'm totally opposed to motor voter initiatives, Oregon's "vote by mail" process, and all similar "good government" plans. If you can't get up off your rump, and get down to the local school, library, firehouse, whatever, to go and pull a lever or mark a ballot, then you really shouldn't be voting. Presenting a photo ID should be required as well.
I'm not advocating for making the process onerous merely to discourage voters. But an election is (or should be) a snapshot in time. Allowing people to vote absentee a month beforehand (where there is no compelling reason to allow them to do so–shut-ins, provably will be out of state on Election Day, etc) distorts the process. What is a voter supposed to do if he changes his mind after the absentee ballot is filed, and prior to Election Day?
All of this is to say nothing of the potential for ACORN-like shenanigans to which Ashrak refers. It's time for a real clean-up of the voting and election process in this country.
