FCC Misses Deadline for Broadband Plan: They’ll Do Great With More Power
by Capitol ConfidentialFederal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski is a big advocate of net neutrality. The agency is considering implementing rules that would greatly advance this goal.

Opponents have described the effort as a government plan to take over and manage the internet. However, it seems Genachowski actions are raising questions about the FCC’s ability to regulate with any degree of competence. On Wednesday, Genachowski requested a one-month extension of the deadline for the FCC to formulate a national broadband plan. Under current law, the FCC is supposed to hand over its national broadband plan to Congress on or before February 17.
According to Colin Cromwell, a senior adviser to Genachowski, the Agency needs more time to:
“fully brief commissioners and key members of Congress, to get additional input from stakeholders, and to fully digest the exhaustive record before the agency”
However, publicly and privately, critics are slamming Genachowski for mismanagement and an apparent inability to get things done on time. Robert McDowell, a Republican member of the FCC said in a statement this week:
“I am disappointed that the FCC’s broadband team is unable to deliver a national broadband plan to Congress by the statutorily mandated deadline.”
Friday, Neil Fried, a House Energy and Commerce Committee staffer, blasted Genachowski for devoting too much attention to net neutrality (a Genachowski pet cause) and not enough to the broadband plan. Said Fried, “We’ve spent a lot of time on net neutrality. I’m not sure why we didn’t spend that time on statutorily mandated items.”
In addition, one FCC observer told Capitol Confidential that “the inability to meet this deadline constitutes further ammunition for net neutrality opponents who charge that the policy would amount to a government takeover of the internet. These people will assert that the FCC is showing that it’s incapable of covering off work already on its plate in a timely fashion, let alone undertaking that particular, large task.”
It remains to be seen whether Genachowski will get the extension he is pursuing.
President Obama has previously indicated that both net neutrality and universal broadband access are important policy goals, but some telecommunications experts argue that instituting the former could create obstacles to ensuring the latter.

Net Neutraliry
Just little children in their 1st pair of long pants and thinking they are grown-up. Adolescent shenanigans wrecking havoc on the nation. They will be sent to the bench soon. I wish it could be sooner!
Broad band internet access, just another right which we must pay to use. When the government forces everyone to buy a gun so then can exercise their Second Amendment Right, I'll listen.
WOW! WHAT A SHOCK! A bureaucrat that can't get things done on time. It's a good thing that there still are some private sector jobs, or this country would already be in the crapper. I have never known the government to do anything right.
Get rid of him.
Shoot…More things to Undue after the Clowns leave!
Here is the Broadband plan:
Government get out of the way and shut up, the internet is doing just fine without you!
Please Mr. Genachowski. Take care of me!!
As something of a computer geek, I have to weigh in here on the general concept of "net neutrality" here, and how the current Administration has managed to warp the original term in typical Orwellian fashion to mean the exact opposite of its original definition. As originally put forth, net neutrality means that packets of information are to be forwarded on a first-com, first-served basis. A neutral network would not allow ISPs to give preference to its own voice-over-IP telephony service in preference to the provider of the user's choice (Skype, Vonage, etc). ISPs would not be allowed to make Google's home page load more slowly, so as to subtly encourage the user to direct searches to Bing or Yahoo.
In ObamaNation, it seems as if Net Neutrality means "left wing web sites good, right wing web sites bad, ISPs that contributed to my campaign good, little guy entrepeneurial startups bad (couldn't write a big check, so screw them)", etc…
Hey Federal Government, if you want to do something useful for the 'net, how about staying out of it and letting some old fashioned free market capitalism do the trick? The evil packet-shaping ISPs will find themselves being outpaced by their truly "net neutral" competitors, and you'll have managed to NOT grow the size of government while allowing for better, faster, more reliable, and freer access to the Internet.
Nah, you'd never think of that…. too simple… and doesn't leave you with any power…
Government is the worst virus of all, now trying to worm it's way into the internet. We need a firewall to keep the government out of our lives. Actually our Constitution was enacted to act as a firewall, we just haven't had the sense to use it regularly to scan all government actions. It's time we do before the country crashes.
Well said !
well said.
I can't help thinking that the thought police in Obama's cabal should henceforth be known as 'The Keystroke Kops'.
There are way too many computer 'hacks' out there for them to be able to pull this off,…there will be ways around this, just like in the 30' s they found a way around prohibition ….We will NOT give up our freedoms without a FIGHT!!!
Government can't run anything. Go away and stay away.

Lloyd also warmly embraced Hugo Chavez's "democratic revolution" and his takeover of media outlets that did not support his views. What a progressive, libtard and socialist dirtbag to have anywhere near the FCC.
Imagine it this way:
"[T]he Agency needs more time to: “fully brief board members and key members of Congress, to get additional input from doctors and lab technicians, and to fully digest this complex diagnosis before the agency can recommend a course of treatment for your particular form of cancer.”"
Any questions?
I want my Obama money.
Yes, they can, as long as the direction is "into the ground".
Have you considered buying a Monopoly board?
It seems that every other day a Marxist Progressive from the 'Bammy administration is urinating down America's back, and telling us its really just a warm, AGW-enhanced sea level change!
You are right, this is well worn tactic of the left. Re-define terms and sneak in their politics under the guise of something positive.
From this point forward when somebody writes or says "Net Neutrality" we will have to ask, "What do you mean by Net Neutrality?"
Net Neutrality was (and should continue to be) "Bits are Bits." The ISP can charge more for a higher volume of Bits but cannot "discriminate" on the source or nature of the Bits.

Not to worry folks, once we get the mainstream media to start doing their job like they are supposed to, we can stop using the internet as our main source of truth. The first step is to vote Hugo Chavez out of the White House.
I would think that 99% of Americans are against this. Don't the Neolibs understand that they will be voted out of office and all these policies will be run by republicans in the near future. Ask a lib if they will look forward to Dick Cheney micro managing their health care in 2012, or deciding which web sites are fair and balanced.

Very well-stated.
rock on
Can you tell me where and when the Obama version of net neutrality was put forward? It seems like everything I've seen suggests that they still mean first-come, first-served forwarding and no anti-competitive preferences.
Where did Obama's version of net neutrality become a content regulation push akin to left wing sites good, etc., as you suggest? Feel free to provide cites to this kind of sentiment. I don't mind waiting.
Meanwhile, when "evil packet-shaping ISPs" do what they suggest they will do, and prioritize certain traffic of other traffic, to which competitive ISP do you plan to switch? Are there a lot of competitive broadband access options out there?

Do you have an active Twitter list? It would be great to keep up with your latest blog posts and activities.
What are the different types of broadband available? I would like to get a provider for my home business, but have no clue which is the most appropriate for my small business in terms of functionality as well as costs.
