Exclusive: FEMA Awards Fire Prevention Grant to ACORN
by Capitol ConfidentialJust a few weeks ago, on September 4th, FEMA handed over $1 million to the ACORN Institute, an ACORN affiliate in New Orleans. The grant is for “fire prevention.” You can find the grant here. Virtually every other organization receiving “fire prevention” grants is a fire deparment or medical facility.
Here’s some background on ACORN Institute:
An affiliate of ACORN, the ACORN Institute, has been a participant in the IRS tax assistance program. The institute prides itself as a one-stop shopping service for low-income households seeking free benefits. In addition to tax preparation, it also provides information on how to secure government aid and to prevent mortgage foreclosure. Among the ACORN Institute’s partners are Citigroup, H&R Block and the Marguerite Casey Foundation. If even many Democrats in Congress are embarrassed by their history of support for ACORN, surely these entities can be as well.
Unclear what any of that has to do with “fire prevention.” According to FEMA, anyone with questions about the grants is urged to contact them at 1-866-274-0960, or via email at firegrants@dhs.gov.

Money goes in one pocket and out the other … ACORN is a criminal enterprise designed to funnel money to political use, while stocking the store fronts with sacrificial minorities as window dressing, and sand bags.
Maybe it's wishful thinking. Acorn could use some fire prevention right now. I wouldn't p!$$ on them if they were on fire.
How many other government agencies are giving our money to these criminals?
I assume, much like their role in mortgages, they take the money in exchange for not setting fires.
ACORN needs more money to fight fires. It seems they are slowly going up in smoke!
I am convinced that Rathke modeled Acorn's structure after purchasing Matthew Lesko's book.
How do we see what the applications contained for the grants?
Went to the site and saw the listing for the funding… Now we need to see what they are supposed to do with the money, per their application.

What is the total being spent on "fire education?"
you can bet if an independant prosecutor ever gets hold of ACORN we will see TONS of examples of ACORN sucking on the teet of the capitalist system to further socialist goals.

ACORN and its couple of hundred affiliates are running an extortion racket Tony Soprano would be proud of. I read that the IRS, H&R Block and Bank of America have pulled out of their agreements and probably a lot more will do the same. Unfortunately, us taxpayers are still playing the dupe.
WTF??? Now, shouldn't any organization that gets grant money from ANY federal agency, as a condition of that grant, be subject to public accountability of the use of that money? Stupid question…of course they should be. Now, the question is, will they?
I find it funny that ACORN gets a grant for "fire protection" while they are in the midst of burning the Democrat party to the ground.

I wonder if McCain-Feingold is to blame for ACORN and other such groups becoming the alternative way for political fund raising. Is this another case of unintended consequences?.
Well someone has to stand outside and point out which building is on fire, so acorn would fit the bill nicely.

apparently, they got 450,000 in funding last year. Why did it double this year? I called Catherine Patterson who is running this operation and left her a voicemail and I also sent an email. Apparently their phone lines are burning up!

I am requesting copies of the grant proposal from ACORN and the signed approvals which are a matter a public record. I want to see the type of fire prevention activities that ACORN provides and understand the decision.
I also want information on the following questions.
* Who signed the authorization?
* Why does FEMA believe ACORN is qualified to perform such work for the government?
* What work was performed with this money?
* What types of similar grants are under consideration for 2009?

This govt is completely out of control and more corrupt than the mafia or drug cartels. Short of a violent Revolution the only steps we can take, imao, to stop the madness is a nation wide tax revolt; bring the federal monolith to its knees. I was convinced some time ago that this country cannot be taken back at the ballot box, especially not with rampant liberal corruption and complicit politicians and judges protecting them.

Andrew we need an outing of all ledgislation now before the senate and congress. You need to call of it all to be stopped, thrown out and re-written. Since the senate and congress have both voted to defund ACORN then all of this should be thrown out. It involves the Appolo Alliance which is tied in with ACORN and SEIU. Van Jones has been thrown out. The IRS cut ties, the census cut ties.
The stimulus bill needs to be immediatly given back to the tax payers. The cap and trade bill and the health care bills need to be thrown out, and any imput from any of these organizations, or their people needs to be taken out of them and they all should be totally re-written.
There should be no further voting on anything concerning tax payer money until congress PROVES to us that it is clean of these corrupt organizations.
If it were only ACORN.
Obama told us all what he was going to do during his campaign speeches, if one chooses to go back and research them. Exactly why what is happening, is happening.

If this were a right-leaning organization you can bet your bottom dollar that the media and POTUS would already have shut down it’s operations and had the FBI in every office searching the records. But because it’s a lefty outfit we can barely get the Irrelevant Media to acknowledge it. This octopus has too many tentacles and must be shut down and a full and outside audit (monitored closely) should be initiated RIGHT NOW. ACORN has it’s hands in so many pies that the only way to stop the corruption is to do this. As the government is currently configured this will be close to impossible with lots of stonewalling by the Dems. That’s why it’s vital to defeat the left in 2010. In the meantime keep the Dems that are still currently in office under a microscope. Lawbreakers don’t like close scrutiny.

Don't forget the $450,000 awarded in 2007 also. ACORN may turn out to be the biggest criminal organization in history.

Just called – more people need to call – I got through right away. I asked why NJ only got $220,000 while ACORN alone got nearly $1 mil. He said probably no one applied. I think that's probably alot of BS. I asked what 's bbeing done about it – he said they're investigating. I asked when the investigation will be done – he said he didn't know. I asked if the money has been put on hold while they're investigating – he said no, but it's something they're looking into.
A million dollar grant to a scumbag organization like ACORN for fire prevention? For God's sake already! Hasn't this corrupt, dishonest organization proven they are not worthy of one dollar of taxpayer money? To all our elected representatives, I demand you investigate where and how that million dollars was spent. EVERY PENNY OF IT! If you don't have the courage or the integrity for that matter to initiate such an investigation, I will remind you in 2010 and 2012 we will elect those that do!

I just called ACORN Institute in NOLA to find out a little more about their fire prevention program and wass told the enitre dept running that program is at a national meeting with FEMA. So then I called FEMA and he said maybe there was a meeting. I asked if all grantees would be at this meeting and he said no, this is a decision meeting – they are working on the problems with that grant. I asked if FEMA had any specific information on the ACORN program and he said they have no specific information on any program that receives a grant.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it, the FEMA grant money is the Homeland Security grant money. Will our press and the American people demand transperancy on this? If our security dollars are being handed out to ACORN for ANY reason, we deserve to hear the why and what for. Until then, I'll assume it is more abuse of power for political purposes.
