Union Embezzlement: From Auto Workers to Disney, Union Corruption Knows No Bounds
by Brian JohnsonThis is why we have the Office of Labor Management Standards (OLMS), the only arm of the federal government to work on behalf of the rank-and-file union members to monitor union finances and catch fraud and abuse…too bad the left wants to cut their funding.

As Union Corruption Update reports:
At least Christine Pawlowski’s thefts will go into the record books as less than what they were. On September 28, Pawlowski, formerly financial secretary for Local 812 of the United Auto Workers, pleaded guilty in Huron County, Michigan (Bay City) District Court to embezzling between $1,000 and $20,000 during January 2007-December 2008. Prosecutors had charged that Pawlowski, now 42, a resident of Minden City, skimmed more than $20,000 from the Harbor Beach, Mich. union, which has 35 members. Sentencing is scheduled for November 9. The guilty plea follows a joint investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards and Harbor Beach police.
While it might not be shocking to some that members of the UAW are embezzling money (the car industry is suffering after all), the below allegation is associated with a company that has a more happy image.
Teresa Luna, bookkeeper/office manager of International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 504, was sentenced for taking almost $70,000 from her union. The good news is, she will have to pay it all back. As UCU reports:
Luna, now 35, a resident of Anaheim, during November 2004-June 2005 allegedly printed out more than three dozen checks from an IATSE checking account and made them out payable to herself. To make the theft convincing, she forged the signatures of two other union officers. She was fired in 2005 shortly after discovery that funds were missing, and eventually was charged and pleaded guilty in September 2008. Luna faced up to five years in prison, but U.S. District Judge David O. Carter gave her a lighter sentence in a less restrictive lockup so she could see her children more often. The sentencing follows an investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.
If we are going to have the SEC monitor companies and hold them accountable to shareholders/stockholders, we must ensure the OLMS is there and well funded to hold the unions accountable (and their officials) to rank-and-file dues paying members. Investors feel comfortable and safe buying stocks in companies because they know the SEC is monitoring their activities. Rank-and-file union members pay dues to unions and expect them to provide services – not use the money to go on ski trips and lavish vacations; or worse, simply pocket it.

It's such a cultural thing, Hoffa, the mob, unions, violence, thuggery.
RICO was made for this, but the man that can pull that switch never will, they work for him after all.
Unions have long outlived any purpose they once had. It's time to move on. Ban unions, and reorganize American industry so that it can actually compete with the rest of the world.

What! Hoffa was a saint!
NOT!!!
Union's have been corrupt almost since the American worker no longer needed them to prevent abuse from management.
Union's today exist to influence political will, and destroy business. Just look at Detroit Big Three vs Hyundai and Toyota's US (non-Union) plants.
Simple economics answer all the questions…

Just browse some of the news sources out there and you'll find quite a number of union embezzlement stories each month. It is extremely common but often it goes unreported. The stories that get reported are just the tip of the iceberg and as I said, there are plenty of reported stories each month.

Actually… I don't really care. Let the union members feel the corruption from within. Besides, the union goons (if they ever figure it out) can just "hit back twice as hard" against their own… just saying.

Problem is while the little guy thieves are getting prosecuted the big guy thieves at the top are getting away with far worse. Perhaps if the OLMS spent some time going after the thugs at SEIU and other ACORN affiliates there might actually be some change.
These are small fish. The corruption rises with the rank they hold. To a one they are all guilty of this. Where is the pay czar for union executives. Afterall they got the bulk of the allledged stimulus money, far more than the wall streeters. They just have no been looked at.
For those who may not remember, Regan was a union buster whilst in office, oh, won't those the days!!!!!!!
So question… Nathan, you brought up the solution of banning Unions. Do you really advocate that? Wouldn't that be a significant over-reach by the government? I agree, they are doing little good in the world today, but I am skeptical that there is usually a golden government solution. I think if we banned them they would simply go underground. Then what? We can't even begin to crack on the illegal immigration issue much less chase down who knows how many union members. Why don't we just remove the incentives? Unions get big to push public policy in their favor (i.e. turn more profits)
If we could actually get Congress to agree to anything as drastic as you have purposed, I would rather see legislation that would remove all tax breaks, corporate privileges, and lobbyist immunities.
And we are really getting things done, lets shift the power back to the people and hold house and senate districts to a population threshold. 250k people per Congressmen, etc. Sure, larger states would have more push but there would also be hundreds more congressmen.
Or we could just do away with the 17th amendment and make our own state legislators elect our senators so the incentive for special interests would be at the state level – a place that is much easier to monitor and control than DC.
Point is, before we start calling for more "bans", lets call for a better way of doing business.
I would love to hear your thoughts.

Excellently put.
My favorite union story of all time. I read this in News of the Wierd about 10 years ago. The Houston Electrical Workers Union needed a new union hall. So they have the Hall built by NON-Union workers. One of the union members finds out and demands to be told why. The Union officials tell the union members that Union construction workers are too expensive.
Unions have gone from protecting good workers from bad management to protecting bad workers from good management and making sure that bad workers get rewarded the same as good workers. As such, they serve a largely negative purpose these days.
And I agree. Repeal the 17th and return the Senate to being the representatives of the state legislatures in Congress.

Unions are nothing more shake down artists in the same class as sharpclown and jacksonass
I worked as a union carpenter for years…
i talk to a lot of people who have these crazy ideas that unions are "for the people by the people", not the case at all. unions are a PRIVATE for-profit organization. i could go on for hours with the shady stuff i've seen. and don't get me started on the PAC fund scam they've got going on with the DNC…in the end… they're just another person with their hand in your paycheck…period
If you want the rest of the country to look like Detroit, just pass the card-check legislation that Obama seeks to pay-back his shady union-leader supporters with.
In today’s world, if someone else is willing to do what you do for less, you’ve got a problem. There's simply no way to force employers to pay you more than what you’re worth over the long run, as the company will be destroyed by competitors with labor purchased at the market rate- and that means China eventually.
The gangster methods and ludicrous job rules of the UAW only worked for the short term benefit of a few, as the company, workers, and country all lose out as the enterprise is bled white.
If you want to earn more money, you better obtain a marketable skill… the days of $50/hr for putting hubcaps on Cutlass Supremes is long, long gone.
When Reagan pushed the unions back, 20M jobs were created, and real GDP grew 30%. So who does the UAW help? Not American industry or workers-
With card-check, union goons can show up at your doorstep at 10pm to “ask” you to join the union. And guess what? You WILL sign- lol
Like most of Obama’s leftist proposals, there’s no precedent to suggest restoring union power will help the country as a whole- it’s historical revisionism, at best. Truth is that the UAW has been nothing but a tumor on the neck of the free-market capitalist system… and look what it got us.

The full court press against Big Union is immediate. Now. Yesterday. Last October. Hell. They've had a pretty good head start against the second rate citizens of America – the ones that don't pay union dues. You and me. America.
The recent battles against SEIU show that they are ready for it. SURE. They did get blindsided by the new counter culture probably because Big Union thought that the Salad Tossers had everyone they needed in the 'bag' for the DNC. The Salad Tossers mistook the 2008 Election as something far greater.
They are all on their heels. If the war against Big Union corruption (wide blanket here) isn't reversed then the ship may leave port with all of us on it. Big Gov and Big Hollywood can let up.
Hate to say it but WE NEED LAWYERS!!! There are a number of cases at face value that might merit legal action to keep the stories alive. Full court press.
And it should come as no surprise to you that we need more union members to assist in exposing the blanket union leadership for what they are – a criminal enterprise.
The perps need to start doing real time in prison. The cancer will not go away without some chemo.
For all in California, spread the word ….http://www.unplugthepoliticalmachine.org This is how we get to the unions and diminish their power. Prevent union dues from being used for political purposes. Period.

I heard this morning on Beck's radio program that Connecticut (?) was allocated stimulus money for road construction as long as they were union workers. Apparently, Conn. didn't agree with this and took the matter to the courts. Well, low and behold, the $$$ was taken away from the state by the gov't.. I guess the gov't. doesn't want to look bad. (Seriously??)
We need to start with investigating SEIU. They are just another wing of ACORN and they are clearly conducting themsleves as a criminal enterprise and that makes SEIU criminal right along with them. Wake Up America! Whats it going to take to get yoiu motivated. Are they going to have to come to your house and beat the crap out of you before you'll care? Lots of the money being stolen and used to against you is your money thru taxes or payroll deduction. Oh sure the union has got you raises and better benefits but what elese did they get that could have been yours. Why do they have to keep their reocrds secret from their own members? What are they hiding?
does it make sense that your union spends money on politains you won't vote for? Do you vote for the guy they indorse every time even when they are clearly a bad choce? Of course not but your union bosses who are getting something in return for supporting the guy are expecting you to blindly follow. When was the last time that anyone new was elected to the top spot in the union? It's been awhile hasn't it! Why? Because the union bosses control the secret ballots and they don't want to give up thier gravy train! Wake Up AmericA! Unions that are not transparent and too foucsed on politics are not representing you! They are organized criime and are stealing your wealth. Wake up! Demand tos ee the books. Demand to know where the union money is going. Does JImmy Hoffa ring any bells!
Someone from another post referred me to a site called http://www.Dearpolitician.org to write my politicians. The site is really cool in the fact that it automates everything and you can write your President, Vice President, Senators, and Congressman. The really interesting parts are that you can write complete Senate and Congressional committees. After you write what you want to say in the body of the template, you can print them off and mail them yourself or you can have Dearpolitician.org fax them to their offices instantly for FREE. If you want your letters delivered today, go to that site! Just passing along a cool site!
