Why Health Care Reform Must Pass
by Bob ParksBefore you ask what kind of self-medication I’ve discovered, let me preface this by reminding people I, among other things, am a political tactician. I lived in dark blue Massachusetts where Democrats not only made sport of standing on the necks of the super-minority Republicans, but attempting to squeeze the remaining life out of them. I know how they think and I know what will happen if health care reform is defeated.
The GOP has the cover of being 100% against this bill, so they are relatively safe come November.
Should health care reform be defeated, Democrats will first blame an out-of-power Republican minority, attempt a few faux mea culpas, tell the American people they “get it” and will hope the majority of Americans forgive-and-forget come November. The primary energy of Democrats will go towards keeping control of the House and Senate.
Let’s be real; if they maintain control, do you really think they won’t have learned the errors of their ways and attempt health care again (with a new “mandate”), this time quicker and more forceful with a fresh two years of pad?
I say let the Democrats have this victory.
Democrats will subsequently incur the wrath of the American people. Town meetings this summer will require Dems to arrive with armed escort, if they’re brave enough to hold them at all. Knowing incrementalist Democrats as we do, they’ll keep ramming unpopular legislation through after passage of health care, infuriating the public beyond the point of redemption.
On the other side, every Republican running this fall will do so on a “Repeal the Bill” platform. Should the GOP retake the House and Senate, that should happen.
November will give new meaning to the political term “bloodbath”. Democrats could be out of power for the foreseeable future, and in 2012, we will see Obama leave in disgrace.
While we all know how disastrous this health care reform will be, I’ve also learned a few things from sadistic Massachusetts Democrats: once you have your foot on the neck of the opposition, press down until they stop breathing. Because of their arrogance, we have golden opportunity to let the Democrats destroy themselves.
I think we should let them do it.

Mr. Parks, have you lost your mind? Do you know how difficult to impossible it is to reverse a social mandate? You cannot give up a battle and expect to win the war. This is not give and take. This absolutely needs to be stopped. If it means that we fight skirmishes each month until November, then so be it. If they ram this through there is NOTHING that they won't ram through–they feel the power of power.

I have to say I agree. I think its perfect. Let it pass by one vote, then cast each democrat in the upcoming election as "the tie breaking vote on health care". They'll quickly lose congress, and then the GOP can get in and repeal or fix the health care bill. I do hope the GOP does something about the out of control spending on Medicare and Medicaid though. A bit cynical, but that's politics.

the problem with letting them have this one is that it is then on the books and harder to repeal. doesn't matter if they get this win, the vast majority of people i talk to are telling me that no incumbent is getting their vote. this is deeper than this one win and the majority of americans get it.

If it passes, they will take their losses in November, the republicans will return to their spineless ways, and the machinery of the democrats will be sitting there waiting for them to activate it. It may be 10 years before they get their chance, but that will be ten years of a depression era economy, after the healthcare reform craters it, and 10 years of people just accepting and forgetting what they have lost. If we can stop it on Sunday, Obama will look like a fool and will lose a great deal of influence with weak kneed democrats. He will never give up, he is a true believer. However, the other democrats are not. They will have bet everything and lost. The republicans can then return to their spinelessness without hurting us.

The dems are in any case building themselves a box that they will be buried in. The progressive agenda has exposed its agenda for all to see, abandoning their decades old incremental approach and living in their nuanced world. If as you suggest they have overplayed their hand, that they have.
IN A TRUELY PERVERSE WAY, we may have Obama to thank for so blatantly shaking the conservative majority in this nation into action. We may now begin to un-wind the damage progressives have done to our family values as well as our american traditions of small govoernment, self-reliance, and charity for charity's sake. A move away from the entitlement mentality and a shift towards self-esteem building, success building help to our fellow citizens. Ingenuity has carried us this far and it still can if freed from the yoke of government intervention.

Also, the democrats have completely unmasked themselves. Gore could not win, Kerry could not win. Obama was the last best chance they had to take control of everything. They have used the race card in getting him elected, so that is done. Tje democrats have revealed their true agenda, and their true nature, they can no longer claim to be true pro-lifers, they can no longer play reformers or honest politicians in a corrupt system. We have to stop this before it is passed.
I disagree. I think if it passes it will never be repealed. The Republicans may make the campaign a referendum for repeal but the problem is:
1) At this time, I do not see the Republicans taking back the majority of either chamber. Result: Healthcare reform stays in place.
2) Even if the Republicans should take back the majority, the chances of attaining a veto-proof majority are highly unlikely. Result: Healthcare reform stays in place.
3) After healthcare reform passes, it's on to Amnesty for Illegal Aliens compliments of Chuck Schumer and that stalwart conservative, Lindsay Graham. Don't be surprised if the upcoming immigration reform promptly grants illegals the right to vote and Obama and company will be back in the majority PERMANENTLY.
So, when they "deem" the healthcare bill passed this Sunday, game over.
Aactually a 1 year sunset transition to the States would accomplish it and a defunding of the HHS Empire with a termination of all employees sucking Uncle Sams teat. A rapid follow up with a USDA and EPA downsizing and fairly soon we have a smaller government. My preference would never have been a big government but now we have to dismantle it.
Chavez is already starting to get envious of Obama's actions being even more aggressive than his own. By the end of HIS term I wonder if there will be any facet of our daily lives not regulated by this government?

Obamacare is about one thing. Buying votes. Are we to believe that a bill that will fund the killing of innocent unborns is built by compassionate human's? These people have no scruples regarding the sanctity of life, yet we are supposed to believe that they are concerned with saving lives. It is such a blatant contradiction that I could never support the agenda of Liberals, even if the strategy in losing holds some water. I work on principles, and I refuse to become like my enemy.

I agree but for a different reason (not that yours isn't sound). I say let the bill pass because it will be immediately challenged on constitutional grounds and over turned by SCOTUS for one simple reason: the mandate to buy health insurance. It is a dangerous risk to assume the SCOTUS can see that it is a violation of the letter and spirit of the constitution to force free American citizens to BUY something because the government says they must buy it for the sole reason of being alive but it is a calculated risk.
As a warning to those who may vote "yes" on this bill: You may wake up in Costa Rica monday morning.
While I agree with Mr. Parks in principle I have grave doubts about the aftermath of this bill passing. Though I believe, as does the state of Virginia, there are serious constitutional issues with Obamacare, enough so our state legislature (and 37 states) have or will pass legislation to nullify the mandates and effectively neuter the bill. That would make it not only a Pyrrychic victory for the dems, it would kill them in the midterms, giving Bob, and us, the desired outcome. Let;s see what the nimrods in Washington do this weekend.

Wouldn't the repeal require a Presidential signature? Which would mean 2013 at the earliest, because I don't really think it's feasible for the GOP to retake Congress in sufficient numbers to override a veto.
Another item, if this POS passes will be the taxes for 2010 payroll will all be taken out of what 6 months wages? Now, do you think any sane worker will vote for a single person this fall who voted for the POS? I doubt it. I hope it does not pass but if it does, we all need to develop and communicate a workable strategy to clean up the mess.

Why don't the states call a constitutional convention? In one felled swoop they could repeal all the unconstitutional nonsense the progressives have made into law since the turn of the century, including the income tax as it exists now and shrink the Federal Government down to the size it should be, and restore the power to where it rightfully belongs with the people and then the states. I'm certainly no constitutional scholar, but I believe the states have the power to do this with two thirds of the states voting to carry it.

Well yes it would require his signature. I think, though, that the outrage and deep unpopularity of the bill after people see what it does (i.e. requiring everyone to purchase health insurance, etc.) could force Obama's hand. With Obama's own election on the line, he might reconsider. Not sure if Obama would be the same, but the 1994 Republican congress managed to force Clinton to sign some bills.

I guess my final position is that I come down on the side of those who want to defeat the mentality of big government, not just the bill. If this doesn't pass they'll just be at it again with something else. Many conservatives sat out this election or didn't get involved because they couldn't hold their noses and vote for John McCain. If people don't see the consequences of this legislation they will continue to support progressive causes. Yes, there is some danger of it not being repealed, but this is the best possible scenario for it to be repealed. And I wouldn't worry too much about the other stuff, because with Scott Brown in the senate, the Republicans can filibuster and the bad bills will go there to die.

This is a knife fight in a phone booth. This isn't about politics, it's about principles. There isn't room for compromise and surrender is not an option.

as hard as it will be to retake america after the politicians have forced the final hand and we as a society have descended into civil war, at least we will be ahead of the rest of the world and will recover before they do and have re-established constitutional principle and renewed faith and morality. Perhaps we should look at this as a win/win. If we defeat the Bill the liberal base will stay home in November & republicans will take the House though the wound won't be that deep.. If they pass the Bill we use the anger they will generate in the American People to destroy them. Still all things being equal I would prefer plan A over B.

Someone was saying that if this passes, then next Obama will declare MARTIAL LAW. I hope that person is wrong. Because if that happens we'll have another Civil War or Revolutionary War. We're very close of getting there, but thank God that my Gov. Rick Perry is getting ready to start blocking any bills that's coming our way from Obama. And so is SC,VA, and ID. I hope other states will follow.

I hear what you are saying and have the same feeling of society descending into civil war, but how would that play out? e.g. Red state vs. Blue (help I live in a Blue state!). If the transformation of our country is not going to come to fruition it will be because we finally make this fight about constitutional intent. We could have done that years ago and should have. Are we going to ever quit letting them pick the battles? It's exactly what we are STILL doing and it is the worst strategy imaginable. While I appreciate the silver lining if it passes, let's keep in mind it hasn't passed yet.
Let see what happens on Saturday. The People taking to the phones, the internet and the streets could just influence a vote or two. If (IF!) the Republicans defeat this somehow, that is more important to the Republic than a political party's future. We realize that if (IF!) this "reform" bill fails, that it will always be lurking around the corner, because that is the progressive mindset. We also know that this should be a battle of ideas, not campaign buttons. We have to draw a line in the sand and fight hard no matter the outcome. Conservatism and personal responsiblity must win out the day in the long run.
Besides, if the "reform" fails, I think a double-digit unemployment rate, higher taxes, nationalizing other industries and souring relations with our allies (cough-cough Israel!) are good places to start with the Dems come 2012.
I'd like to see Mitch Daniels hop on board and fight this, but I'm uncertain about him on this matter.
