Where the Contract with American Failed, the Freshmen 5o Will Succeed
by Brian MillerOne thing our founding fathers could not foresee… was a nation governed by professional politicians who have a vested interest in getting reelected. They probably envisioned a fellow serving a couple of hitches and then looking forward to getting back to the farm.” — Ronald Reagan

The energy of 1994 led to the Contract with America, and the huge Republican victory of that year. It was a victory for Republicans, but was it a victory for America?
The Contract with America had an inherent flaw. It was a political party bargaining with Americans: give us power and this is what we will do for you. The Freshmen 50 is different: it is Americans telling the federal government what it will do.
We are citizen-candidates united on a platform of six simple and realistic reforms for our government:
- Apply the Law Equally: All laws that apply to all citizens also apply to Congress
- Term Limits: Limit terms in Congress to no more than 12 years in the House and Senate, respectively
- Enforce Congressional Ethics: Yearly tax and expense audits, former Congressmen and their staff cannot be lobbyists, allow the ethics committee to do their job
- Read the Bill: Prior to final vote, the entire bill must be read out loud on the floor of the House; if a representative is not present for the entire reading, he cannot vote
- Tax Reform: Repeal our current tax code in favor of one that taxes only once, at one rate, and require a 2/3-majority vote for any new tax
- Balance the Budget: Amend the Constitution to require a balanced budget
We are unique.
We have never been elected to the House or Senate. We have left our jobs and normal lives. We are ophthalmologists, teachers, pilots, military vets and reservists, stay-at-home-moms, small businessmen … we are American citizens, and we will hold each other accountable.
I started the Freshmen 50 in summer 2009, when I decided to make a run for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District. But I understand something very significant: I cannot change Washington by myself. After looking at some of the other candidates around the country, I saw that we could have a strong coalition going in together in January 2011. Finally, we can put into law the reforms the American people want.
Please go to the website and view the scores of candidates who have signed on. Any candidate can still become part of the “Bullpen”, so long as they agree to the platform. The final 50 candidates will be selected in the fall as we go into the general election based on a combination of their respective chance of success and the degree to which The Freshmen 50 PAC can make the biggest impact on the status quo. The final 50 candidates will receive PAC money and a national advertising campaign will be launched on their behalf.
The only way we will be successful is for millions of Americans to contribute a little bit each. The Freshmen 50 provides the focus to break through Washington’s status quo.
The Freshmen 50 is a PAC, but unlike most PACs, there is no special interest behind it. It’s just you, me, and the radical notion that “We the People” should represent our neighbors responsibly.

I like it.
This would limit their power.
Hence it will never happen.
The Freshman 15 is the 15 unwanted ugly pounds a Freshman gains when starting college.
So the Freshman 50 would be the equivalent in new Congressmen?
Well, there are great restaurants in DC and lobbyists are such friendly fellas and always pick up the check.
And they do have fill that gaping void where their respective souls used to be…
># Tax Reform: Repeal our current tax code in favor of one that taxes only once, at one rate, and require a 2/3-majority vote for any new tax
That's the same stupidity they have in California. And we all know how well that worked.
So with the proposed term limits, McConnell and Boehner would be out of office?
Sounds good to me.
It will require a large 'grass-roots' support and insistence from the American people for any congressman to stand firm on these principles. Hummm….maybe that's where the "Tea Party" comes into play!
I used to be against term limits, but not any more. I figured the power of the people was enough to kick a bum out of office, but it's just not, especially when they get all sorts of unnatural advantages through incumbency regardless of their performance in office.
Congressional office has become a very fattening meal ticket at the taxpayer's expense and at the expense of representative democracy.
Can you change "Apply the law equally" to include the getting rid of government preferences for racial and ethnic groups? That's one that has to go to.
Taken from the Freshman 50 website:
5. Reform the Federal Tax Code: Repeal the 16th Amendment and replace the current federal tax code with a clear, simple, and fair tax code
Now, what's this blithering about California?
50 congress persons that do not have a political background (citizen-candidates),…….
being elected at one time,…………..certainly would be UNIQUE.
and it just may work,…………..
so in order to go to Washington to tell them what WE want,……………..they have to first,…………
come to us: THE TEA PARTY,………..otherwise it will another 1994,…………
as young Brian points out.
And Frank, and Pelosi, and Reed, and Dodd, and Lieberman, and Byrd, and it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas suddenly.
Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, had his home foreclosed. He is also a registered DEMOCRAT!
I would prefer term limits be 3 terms per house (i.e., 6 years for the House and 18 for the Senate) and would like to see the 17th Amendment repealed so that the Senate would go back to representing the states. With respect to a balanced budget amendment, it must allow an exemption for times of war (though suitably limited — perhaps requiring a formal declaration of war against one or more specific nations).
What? Lose KKK Byrd? The democrats would never let it happen. I'm sure they've already contracted a taxidermist to prepare the man for his next term.
But once the freshmen start enjoying the cavier and truffles will they become "Same as it ever was"???
Article 13 Section 3 of the California State Constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote by the legislature in order to pass any tax increases.
And that worked out so well in California…
Pretty good start. I would add:
1. Limit to one term, but increase House terms to 6 years. Two years too short to become fully effective. Congress members need to start campaigning for re-election from day one now.
2. Apportion congressional representation by voter registration rolls, not census.
3. Mandate that states must set congressional districts such that the distance from the geometric center of the district and any one point on the boundary does not exceed 3 times the distance from the center and any other point on the boundary. (probably a better way to compute this – but you get the idea).
4. Supreme Court Justices limited to 15 year term on the court – renewable upon re-nomination by President and confirmation by Senate.
5. Amend Senate debate cloture rule (fillibuster). Require 2/3rds on first vote to close debate. If fails, debate continues for 7 calendar days (unless a second 2/3rd vote closes it). After that, bare majority only for cloture.
You mean he's not a 40ish white guy, acting as a lone wolf?? Well, so much for that narrative… back to the drawing board, MSM.
Wow, the trolls are busy today…makes me wonder what is up….probably the clean up crew because of the oil spill!
I think the platform is wonderful. If Repeal and Replace Obamacare is included somehow it would appeal to the rising numbers of folks that are opposed to the heavy handed legislation of CONgress. That has to happen to keep this country from sliding into socialism. I would also like to make sure that all of the private sector businesses that have been snapped up by the government be put back into the private sector.
Maybe there could be another statement that goes as such:
The Federal Government will be reduced in size over the course of 12 years, back to limited government, as the Fore Fathers intended it to be by the Constitution.
This has to happen to make sure we survive as a Republic!
Good question, but it was not for lack of effort and THAT is the point.
If losing them was the price for getting rid of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, JF Kerry, Teddy (alive). Cheap price to pay.
Great points. Reminds me of an old saying regarding debt: If you owe the bank a million dollars YOU have a problem, if you owe the bank a billion dollars, the BANK has a problem.
I'm opposed to term limits. Voters should always be free to vote for their preferred candidate. On that note, the way to improve the quality of politicians is not to impose some arbitrary limit on how many terms they may serve, but to vote them out when they no longer serve the interests of the people.
Why not take your cynicism some place else, like DKos or FireDogLake. You can get your full dose of socialism/pederasty there for the low low price of user registration. You know what keeps them from backing out? The Second Amendment.

"End support of Israel which puts America's future in peril (as we isolate the rest of the Middle East and even the rest of the world for no good reason)
Why do we guarantee Israels oil supply even if it means shortages for Americans? This is a fine example of proof our government has been hijacked and no longer serves the AMERICAN PEOPLE. "

I agree with the platform; however, I'm very nervous about a Constitutional amendment. Nervous enough to not want it as a primary objective. I fully believe that spending is WAY out of control; something clearly has to be done. I still can't help but fixate on this one issue: with the current crazies in office and their destroy America mentality, do we really want to open that can of worms? Perhaps my worries are absurd?
y t f s,……….. you have the right to remain silent,…………………….
FIGHT on PATRIOTS ! ! !
Nothing. Except they are then unelected by the voters who put them there.
The MSM and Obama would have much preferred the middle-aged WHITE guy in the photos who was removing his shirt. They certainly hoped that this "suspicious character" would also been a card carrying member of the Tea Party.
But what would have happened had all this happened in Arizona? What if the guy removing his shirt was dark-skinned? No coverage?
Read the article first, Sparky.
From the article above:
>Tax Reform: Repeal our current tax code in favor of one that taxes only once, at one rate, and require a 2/3-majority vote for any new tax
Just like in California.
So they got a gold star and an A for effort?
That's my kind of precious snowflakes!
Do we have any doubt that they will still spin it to fit their narrative?! It's going to be all about how America mistreated this poor poor guy who came here for a better life! ha, guess he forgot his brains and bought a house he couldn't afford! Give me a break!
So you don't know where the quote "Same as it ever was" comes from.
That's OK, dearie.
You're too young to know.
Jordan, I think you've hit on the biggest difference between '94 and today. This year's REAL Conservative sweep will take place because of OUR demands of government, NOT because of THEIR promises.
I don't know Mr. Miller so I'm not going to agree with your targeted statement. I will say that your sentiment is easy to arrive at when 'they' all do a good dog and pony show, then turn around and abandon all principles. Let us hope that these Freshmen uphold their covenant.
Best of luck to you in Az, Mr. Miller.
"The ten items in the Contract were all acted upon in the first 100 days of the new Congress, which is what the signatories had pledged. Nine of the ten items in the Contract passed the House: Only the constitutional amendment on term limits (which required a two-thirds vote) was defeated. Out of a total of 302 roll call votes on issues related to the Contract With America, the conservatives prevailed on 299 of them. A balanced budget amendment passed in the House by a 300-123 margin but was subsequently defeated as it fell one vote short of the two-thirds needed for passage in the U.S. Senate. The overall margin by which the items in the Contract were passed averaged about 70 percent despite the fact that the Republicans only held a 12-seat margin over the Democrats (52-48 percent, the smallest House majority margin in 40 years). Given the notorious lack of party discipline in the American Congress, the passage by a large majority of nearly all of the items in the Contract was a remarkable achievement."

Sorry, but we must support Israel
America got along fine before the UN creation of that phony little terrorist state.
The Israelites are God's chosen people.
Maybe in the minds of "Israelites" but not if you are a Christian. Christians are the Chosen people. It is in Galatians. Sorry you have been lied to all your life but there is always a chance to save yourself.
We did very well as a nation as long as we all believed in a Supreme Being,
Funny, we started going downhill about the time our government started backing that synagogue of Satan (Rev 3:9) – the One World Government creation called "Israel."
….and we believed and defended Israel.
Not the MODERN phony state of Israel – it hadn't been created, yet. Maybe you are confusing it with the kingdom of Israel which was destroyed some several thousand years a go. Not exactly a thing to base current policy on.
In my mind Balanced Budget is a rather simplistic thing. Income must exceed outgo with all debts being paid off and a cushion being built up for future issues. Same as my budget. The debt elimination and cushion build up are more flexible in timeline than outgo not exceeding income.
So did Soros call in extra trolls today? Insults are not going to get any more responses from me, if you want to tear what I said apart….tear it apart…don't be a candy ass!
We can HOPE.
I hadn't heard that! Sweet…it just goes to show how out of touch they are on the issue of Islamo fascism. Those folks are out to destroy us and the sooner we realize this as a nation, the better.
WLR……..Please give more thought to #4. I question whether we want SC Justices running for
office. Might be better to give them 15, 20 or 25 years and out the door.
LOL! It's like someone gave you a bunch of your favorite candy….I like your style and will be stealing your methodology! Faisal Shahzad….Faisal Shahzad….Faisal Shahzad…..
Calling on our elected officials to abide by the rule of law and adhere to the Constitutional mandates set forth by our Founding Fathers.
Calling on Congress to act only with the “consent of the governed” and the support of a majority of the American people.
Calling for an end to the socialization of American industries through takeovers and “bailouts.”
Calling for fiscal sanity and an end to massively expensive programs and elevations of the national debt ceiling that are crushing the American people in senseless debt.
Demanding that there be transparency in legislative processes and an end to the “closed door” scheming that has become the norm for the 111th Congress.
Opposing any and all efforts to strip our faith and heritage from our schools and public places through judicial activism, legislation or historical revisionism.
In addition, I am deeply concerned about the Obama Administration’s assault on our system of checks and balances and its continual pressure on Congress to compliantly bend to its will. I call on the President to stop his administration’s overt arm-twisting and outright domination of the legislative process.

Rule of Law:
All opportunities, freedoms, laws and penalties apply to all people equally, regardless of race, sexuality, and elected status, or corporate size. No aristocracy, no oligarchy, no favoritism.
Congressional Acountability:
Reinstate Constitutional representation of 1 US House member for every 30,000 to 50,000 population. Then give Congress back much of it's oversight responsibility, which is currently delegated to the vast beauracracy.
Tax Code:
Repeal the 16th ammendment. Yes, and explicitly. Starve the Beast. Privatize Social Security. Make a 'wall of seperation' between government and health care. Expose consumers to the cost of their health care purchasing decisions. Let rich nations defend themselves. Bring our military home from non-combat locations like NATO, Japan, & possibly South Korea.
Ahhhhh…… the pissing contest of morality.
I notice that they are not to bright in changing things up and give themselves away a lot!
My previous comment was directed @ cingular. Sorry if there was any confusion.
what a sarcastic attitude there yes,…………
but than again I suppose it is required if one is to accept pols like Dodd, Pelosi, Reid, Kennedy,…….
Great post. Thank you for the link.
If our ways are not changed through grass roots political action then our future can be previewed in today's Greece. I love the idea of the federal government getting its instructions from the electorate rather than the current, backwards relationship. There will be stiff resistance from every government funded quarter but if we are resolute we can still prevail. Time is running out however and soon there will be more people on the dole in one form or another than there are working for a living and ballot box initiatives will be impotent. Tempus fugit…
Sounds good! But why is there no mention of support for the "Contract From America"?

frosting on the cake
There's not much new here, Danny Boy. Let's review, shall we:____The Muslim in Chief, is by far, the most unqualified office holder………on any level. This Agitator has no interest in governance. The only arena he feels comfortable in is the Organizing realm. If it isn't George Soros, (btw, has anyone check his immigration staus?), calling the shots then it's Union Thugs and radical left-wingers. The Agitator in Chief's sole purpose is creating a myriad of crisis-based situations in order to get Government control if we are to believe Rahmbo. So far, the only output from this DoucheBag in Chief has been racial divide, entrepreneurial suicide, (based on his tax returns, one must wonder if he's "earned" enough already), and a weakening of America's status in the world. This RadicalMuslimLovin' dirtbag is too cowardly to admit he's a Marxist. Funny how ashamed they are in revealing their true convictions. i refuse to be politically correct because i'm not a Progressive-Liberal, so trolls, save the cyber ink!!
wow,….I wish I had that much,. time
That's a problem. For some reason, short term self interest, I guess, people will elect career politicians that 'bring home the bacon', even if said polititions destroy the country in the process. Kinda like booking a luxury suite on the Titanic.
The people of eastern Washington state reelected Tom Foley to the house for the umpteenth time in the same election that they (the people in his district) voted in favor term limits.
You have no basis for that assertion.
I'm sure Beckel and the left are scambling to try and find some way to link them both. Afterall, Howard Dean engineered the rise of the dem left through a repitition of unending lies and innuendo. Tell people something enough times over a long period of time, get the MSM on board, and people will believe it. I think they're hoping for the same kind of result with this.
The left has never needed one before.

Reagan for Rushmore!!!!
Nail ON THE HEAD…!!!
"Balanced Budget" sounds great to the individual…they can't game the system to make it LOOK like the budget is balanced…
But CONGRESS…give me a freakin' break…! People in Congress can maneuver numbers better than an Organized Crime accountant…the final fallback position can always be just to raise taxes…
Better to lock total taxation to a percentage of GDP, inclusive of food and energy, to force Congress to move pro-business and expand economic activity to gain more taxable income…
Telephone for you…. Mao on the line
Because of financial concerns. If they concentrate on 50, and get 40 or 45 elected, that would be better than spreading the campaign cash out to 75 or 100 candidates, and getting only 30 or 35 elected. It took progressives the better part of a century to screw this nation up, and while it won't take nearly that long to fix, it still won't be done overnight. Plus, if it becomes obvious that the country is moving to the right, others will join voluntarily.
Please read the whole post BEFORE roasting me.
Actually I agree with part of yestofreespeach's point. We need to be VERY clear on what needs to be done to the tax code. I'm for your prop. of repeal and replace with a fair or flat tax. I just want the F-50 to state their intent BEFORE election time.
I'd prefer a 12.5% flat tax for all entities. I'd also like to see them stop federal contributions to non-profit organizations. That BS just allows the corrupt to fund the corrupt.
DON'T GET ME WRONG. I'm all for reforming Washington ASAP! I just want to see the plan clearly laid out so we can apply some metrics and hold these people accountable.
Feeling that they won't implement any of what they propose?
Yes, I do get that.
Telephone for you……….. Saul Alinsky calling…..
I'm with you on Lieberman. Dodd's already retired. I'll even agree that Byrd is too old and earmark-happy.
C'mon, you're not really trying.
You need to include Soros, Alinsky, William Ayers, ACORN, AFL-CIO and the reverse vampires in your post.
How else are you going to defeat Baruch Hasbro Fartbama, the Indonesian-Muslim atheist-socialist belonging to a radical Christian church, being simultaneously weak and ineffectual while being the worst dictator in human history?
Remember, he stole your guns and your freedoms, he jacked up your taxes, stole your pickup truck, let the Mexican illegal immigrants in, blew up the oil rig in the gulf of Mexico, nationalized everything, and kicked your poodle!
What are you going to do about it, whitey?
Joe, I have no reason to "roast" you at all. When the comment was made that this was "just like California," I quoted from the Freshman 50 website:
"5. Reform the Federal Tax Code: Repeal the 16th Amendment and replace the current federal tax code with a clear, simple, and fair tax code"
all I got back was "this is just like California." At that point, "roasting" is a perfectly reasonable response.
As to your point, I like clarification too. That's why I went to the website and got some clarification. This was not "my prop," this came directly fromhttp://the-freshmen-50.com/

Silly TEA Party person, don't you know you're not relevant anymore?
Rest assured that you'll have your reward when the night of the long knives begins.
So you don't want term limits then?
Illegal Aliens have nothing to do with problems here in CA. Its the idiots at the state house who enacted 8000 special programs the second we had any type of a budget surplus, never mind thinking about how to pay for them later. (Remember, pols would rather be "borrow and spend" than "tax and spend"). Guess what happens when you have laws forcing 8000 stupid programs and no way to pay for them. The 2010 CA budget of course! Don't even get me started on the propositions…
You just hit the nail on the head, my friend.
Cap spending, Cap spending, and tie congress's hands so they quit stealing.
We may want a sensible budget limit capped to the government's outflow the previous year. The fictional "zero balance" is not a desirable goal!
We need a sensible balance with sensible inflationary policies. The problem is spending, not taxes. Because if you spend too much then it will come out in debt or inflation or maybe taxes.
There's no free lunch, and even Reagan understood that. But he trusted the democrat-controlled congress to cut spending and they broke their word (he should have "trusted but verified").
