Rep. Billy Long Votes to Fund Pigford, Then Cites Need to ‘Slow Out-of-Control Government Spending’
by Bob McCartyThree weeks ago, I published two posts about a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to continue funding for the colossal case of fraud known as the Pigford II Settlement. Today, I offer a third piece in which I cast light on the thought process — or lack thereof — behind one congressman’s decision to vote in favor of making payments of $1.25 billion to a large group of people. Each person in the group claimed to be a black farmer discriminated against by the USDA but, not surprisingly, many turned out to be con artists backed by hungry class-action lawyers.
Unlike Tea Party rock star U.S. Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), the subject of my first post who later apologized for casting a vote in favor of the funding, U.S. Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.) appears unapologetic in standing behind his vote.
In response to a recent inquiry from constituent Greg Cable, the freshman Republican from Missouri’s 7th Congressional District sent a 432-word reply via email to “explain” his vote in favor of funding Pigford II payouts.
Disappointed with Long’s response and a firm believer in the saying, “Sunshine is the best disinfectant,” the Ozark, Mo., father of four and grandfather of just as many shared it with the folks at BigGovernment.com. Finally, Editor-in-Chief Mike Flynn shared it with me.
Noteworthy in Congressman Long’s reply was the following statement he made about voting against the amendment proposed by U.S. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) that would have prohibited Pigford II funding:
“I voted against this amendment, along with several other Republicans, because stopping payments could increase the risk for additional litigation. I firmly believe I must take every step I can to curb costly litigation, which hurts businesses and job creation in this country. I also believe I must take every step to slow out-of-control government spending at every turn.“
Later in the reply, the auctioneer-turned-politician added this thought-provoking missive:
“The United States is facing an unprecedented budget shortfall which threatens the stability of our economy and the fiscal viability of future generations who will have to repay our debt. Families, businesses and especially the federal government all need to take caution to live within our means and prioritize how to best spend their money. We must look at all programs as we search for savings in tackling this extremely important challenge.”
Apparently, Congressman Long thinks constituents like Cable should agree with him — despite his claim that “We must look at all programs as we search for savings” — that it’s worth spending $1.25 billion to prevent spending more money to litigate the case once described on the Washington Times’ editorial page as “Race hustlers are shaking down taxpayers for payoffs, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is falling for the scam.”
As I noted June 17 in my second post on this topic, 79 Republicans — including Long and West — voted in favor of funding the Pigford II payouts. Makes me wonder how many of them agree with Congressman Long and how many of them, like Congressman West, had to apologize to their constituents in order to have any chance of winning re-election in 2012.
COINCIDENCE? Less than four hours after I published this piece on my blog yesterday, I was notified that Congressman Long had issued a news release, announcing that, Long Fights Frivolous Lawsuits.

"SOLD AMERICA(N)"
OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!!!!!
Guilted into voting "yes" by fear of being called a racist….
Come on…. they always call you a racist, so get over it. If this turd has no spine then GET OUT OF OFFICE and put in someone willing to do the right thing!
If there was no USDA to begin with then there would be no government agency to discriminate against anyone…. So instead of payouts to "victims", maybe Congress should zero out funding for the non-Constitutional agencies of the government. Seems like that would cut out a lot more wasteful spending than shoveling money to trial lawyers (who actually get most of the cash in class action settlements).
Gutless, spineless Obama mom-pants wearing jackwagon.
Makes me wonder of the hundreds of Representatives, how many of them actually have testicles?
Voting out of both sides of his rear.
With Repubs like Long, who needs dimocrats..
Ann
This tratior needs to go back to auctioneering…
Any REPUBLICan voting for stopping the funding UNTIL a thorough investigation takes place…is nothing more than a moderate 'fence sitter' and an enemy of the 'real' American people! No excuses…no apologies! I am a Conservative woman who had read enough and heard enough about the King amendment to be for it…why did not these representatives who get daily briefings/memos/calls from leadership on what this was all about?
Again I say…NO EXCUSES…NO APOLOGIES…YOU DID IT…YOU OWN IT AND NOW YOU WILL PAY FOR IT BIG TIME BY THE 'REAL' AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO FANCY FOR TURNCOATS!!
~~~
IT IS NOT OVER ON THE DEBT LIMIT…AMERICA…KEEP UP THE HEAT! RAISING IT WILL ONLY POSTPONE THE INEVITABLE…LET’S JUST GET IT OVER WITH AND CALL THEIR BLUFF! CALL/EMAIL YOUR REPS TODAY…
Senator Rand Paul only CONSERVATIVE standing up and saying NO on the debt ceiling vote?
http://www.c-span.org/Events/Senator-Rand-Paul-R-...
Call/email Senator Paul for standing up for ‘real’ Americans everywhere on the Patriot Act, the Budget and the Debt Ceiling.
All I know is Mr. Billy Long better pay me…..say……$1,000,000 or I will SUE Mr. Billy Long personally. Just think how much this is going to cost him!!!
What am I going to sue him for, you ask??
Does it matter anymore??
According to Mr. Long, if you are sued you should just pay, even if the charges made are completely fabricated!!!
Another useless member of the RINO herd… Disgusting.
Jeez…start a freakin blog, would ya?
If we nominate Romney…we can expect much more of this RINO crapola…that is, if he can beat Barry.
RINO, hypocritical, gutless, moronic, idiot…Take your pick they all describe Mr. Long.
I would say zero, zip, nada. We haven't heard any articles of impeachment yet.
If you nominate anyone other than Paul, you can expect much more of this RINO crapola.
so why didn't he allow his son to run,….
who had a MUCH, MUCH better chance of winning.
Like Paul is the only non-RINO. LOL.
But, even a RINO is better than the guy you got.
both of them…
I don't know about you guys, but I'm done wading through knee-deep RINO crap…
Get over the racism thing. No more "PC" It is used by Socialist Dems to coerce Americans. Whites and blacks both do bad things, as in this case.
As for Allen West, his mistake was joining the racist Congressional black Caucus with Rangle, etc. They own him now. Any organization that is based solely on skin pigment or race, is not objective, including latinos. Isn't governing supposed to be objective?
Again I say. if you have a cause you should have to go before Congress in public, on CSpan and state your case. A little sunshine goes a long way to prevent quid pro quos that happen when these people are allowed into private offices of Congress members.
"Budgets? We don't have no budgets. We don't need no stinking budgets!" Dems on the Hill
I don't think Billy Long and the rest of them realize this isn't a game anymore and a LOT of people are paying attention to how they vote,you can run from a statement,or a citizen journalist,but you can not run from your vote,your vote will haunt you up until your voted out of DC and put back on the streets,this ruling class mentality has set in with these freshman and they have forgotten who they work for.
There is a reason that RINO is a four letter word.
I really admired West… up until his Pigford II vote.
A simple apology and "I made a mistake" cannot happen on such important issues.
I still admire West, but would find it difficult to support him.
so much harsh language with you Roger. Like this mean spirited discussion the other day…
'Whatever' said: "A brother just being a brother."
Roger responded: "And they're always in such great neighborhoods.
I'm sure you can point out the beautiful gardens and neighborhoods they're famous for?"
75 times I've responded to your lame cut and paste.
It's not harsh language to expect Conyers to maintain his Chicago home. Why should it be harsh to expect liberals to be held accountable for the same things as everyone else?
And you've already explained why you make these kinds of comments.
I don't post over at Kos and I never did. I am easily bored by "mutual agreement societies". If I felt the way you guys do about issues… my interest in these discussions would go for about 5 seconds.
clearly, I'm argumentative and take pleasure in being the ants at somebody's picknick / rain on someone's parade. maybe there IS something wrong with me, in that, but I don't care. The way I see it- its a free country. Moreover, I value the "Socratic method". That may sound pretentious – implying that I'm here to offer "constructive" criticism. If I manage to do that then that's great, but I don't expect to be acknowledged.
I'm surprised Billy took time away from his efforts to create a National Auctioneers Day to vote on anything. There's a lot of buyer's remorse in Southwest Missouri where he's concerned.
Soured me too. I do still like his stances against Islamofascism though.
LOL….instead of a PURITY PLEDGE maybe we need to mandate IQ tests of our so called leaders.
Idiot.
I'm getting really sick of having my intelligence insulted by these "ooo ooo pick me, vote for me" halfwits who have no clue what to do after election day……not unlike our perpetually campaigning president.
Oh and condolences, obama, for having to forgo yet ANOTHER vacation to, uh, DO YOUR JOB. So sorry work is such a constant bother.
Hey, you could resign. Then you'd have plenty of time to vacation…………………..in Copenhagen. They just LUV you there. Leave a note on the desk and bye bye….don't let the door hit you in the but on your way out.
He is the only non-RINO because he is the only Constitutionalist.
You don't have your facts straight.
Then you should vote for him.
Rand said he would contemplate running only,……
and only if his father did NOT run.
That's "straight" enough for me there FlippyHoppo
Oh, sh**, I voted for him. But it's not like there was a choice. It was a case of RINO or vote to increase the Democratic horde, which I wasn't about to do. This area deserves (a lot) better.
Candidate Billy Long said multiple times during the election "there are many things about Obamacare that are good." It should be no surprise how quickly hear earned the title RINO.
Remember Congressman Long isn't afraid to ask the FBI to launch investigations against his critics and lie about them to get the FBI to intimidate the. Off with his head probably isn't the best thing to say towards Congressman Billy Long.
You asked, "why didn't he allow his son to run". Ron didn't tell his son he couldn't run; Rand said that he wouldn't run if his father did. It's not complicated, but somehow you made it so.
I did not make anything complicated but than,..
some people have a problem hitting a curve ball so,….
here it is, color coded and by the numbers for you.
A bright new face in the Republican Party hints at running but,…….
he doesn't run because his has been, two time loser father,……
wants to be on the national stage for a short while longer.
And somehow you think that Rand is going to make,…
a bigger joke out of his father by running against him and,…..
marring his political future in the bargain.
By Ron Paul saying he is going to run,….
he TOLD his son not to run.
If this isn't clear enough for you than for sure,….
you can't hit the curve ball so do yourself a favor and,…
get out of the game.
" pretentious",…????
" pretentious",…????
"……don't be an idiot.
Obama's got about a snowball's chance in 2012. ……"
somehow you read in my post that,…….
I believe Obama is unbeatable,……??????
"……I know you "neocons" love to play the "electability" game but,….
isn't that what got us into this mess in the first place?…."
and I'm "pretentious"……?????
He has certainly got the liberal biased talking points down pat.
No one would argue that the government needs to stop spending entirely. The question then becomes one of priorities.
Even the fact that we have a Black President doesn't convince some people that a Black in today's America can go as far as their intelligence, motivation and hard work can take them.
To those people, the unfair start that slavery gave the Black race in America still has so many bad consequences for them that each and every Black man, woman and child living in America today deserves a small personal forturn and guaranteed income for life from our government. If you could get a truthful answer from them, that's what you'd hear from the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Al Sharpton, the Rev. Jerimiah Wright, most Black Congressmen and Senators and a host of others.
America has a serious information and attitude problem. Forty years of the War on Poverty training mostly Black people to expect what they didn't earn MIGHT have something to do with that. We have some interesting times ahead of us.
I Think they own him now. Any organization that is based solely on skin pigment or race, is not objective, including latinos. Isn't governing supposed to be objective?
