Obama Administration Whitewashing Government Inaction Regarding Oil and Natural Gas Leases
by Bob McCartyIn advance of President Barack Obama’s energy speech at Georgetown University, a top oil and natural gas industry leader called on the Obama Administration to abandon its policies “to defer, delay and deny access to domestic resources of oil and natural gas.”
In a statement to reporters during a media conference call this morning, American Petroleum Institute Upstream Director Erik Milito refuted a report by the Interior Department that U.S. oil and natural gas companies are sitting on oil leases granted by the government, refusing to turn them into producing leases.
“The report completely whitewashes the fact that in many cases, the reason these leases have no exploration plans is that BOEMRE is sitting on those plans,” Milito said. “This is like leasing an apartment from the government for $20 million dollars and the government refuses to give you the keys to the apartment – then the government proceeds to complain because you are not occupying the premises.”
Below, I share an excerpt from the full text of Milito’s statement as prepared for delivery by API:
The disturbing reality is that 2011 could go down as the first year since 1957 that there has not been at least one offshore lease sale. Not one.
I’m certain that Americans find it difficult to reconcile that – and the fact that 85 percent of our offshore resources are off-limits to development – despite increased uncertainty in world oil markets and rising worldwide demand for crude oil.
President Obama has a speech on energy scheduled for later today.
We hope he will tell Americans that the administration will abandon their policies to defer, delay and deny access to domestic resources of oil and natural gas: Resources that could help create U.S. jobs, grow the U.S. economy and provide royalties, rents, and revenues to the U.S. Treasury.
However, reports suggest that the President wants to provide “incentives” to develop the leases the industry currently has, but may or may not, actually have oil and natural gas on them.
The reports are that these incentives include shortening lease terms and increasing royalty rates through a graduated system.
These are not incentives.
They are, in fact, disincentives.
These are actions that will discourage investment here in the US and shift that investment to other parts of the world – to places like Brazil.
We hope the president will abandon energy politics in favor of energy policies that will provide Americans what they want and deserve: more energy, economic growth and more jobs.
We have a million American jobs that we can create if our industry is allowed to produce the oil and natural gas in knows how to produce.
And we have 9.2 million jobs to protect – the jobs across the country supported by our industry.
We urge the president to join the oil and natural gas industry in helping us create and protect those jobs.
It is not too late to get America’s energy policy back on track.
If you oppose the Obama Administration’s actions that are literally killing the nation’s oil and natural gas industries, costing American jobs and making us more dependent on foreign sources of energy, CONTACT YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS IN THE NATION’S CAPITOL, let them know how you feel, and make sure they know you’ll be watching their votes.

I think an excellent energy policy would be stopping delivery of all forms of energy to Washington, DC. No gasoline, no diesel, no heating oil, no natural gas, no coal and no electricity. DC should only be able to consume "renewable" energy- walking, cycling and hot air (in abundance). Perhaps experiencing what they wish to force on us lowly constituents would wake them up- or at least make them so uncomfortable they would quit their jobs.

The industry isn't developing the thousands of leases it has because that would increase supplies and drive down prices. It's much more sensible for them to enjoy their current record profits and whine about allegedly being hamstrung by "Big Gummint." The green movement does everything they can to gum up the works when it comes to developing our own energy resources. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they received funding from oil producing OPEC as well as those who would like to see us weakened such as China.
What the environmental movement fails to note is if we don't get at our own resources, we're not getting them from some other planet. Anything imported comes from some other country that cares a lot less for the environment than we do!

Once the price reaches a certain point–like, oh, $3.00/gallon–the demand starts going DOWN, and so do the oil companies' profits. Sure, they could cut prices to stimulate demand, but they have to have a ready SUPPLY of oil to be able to capture profit from an increase in demand. With an untapped AND unrefined supply, oil companies will have less and less wiggle room to cut prices to stimulate demand. They know this. Obviously, you don't.

A Colorado Springs “birther,” retired Air Force Col. Gregory Hollister, has Internet blogs abuzz with what may be an illegal foray into an online Social Security data base and how he obtained a copy of President Barack Obama’s draft registration from 1980.
“Col. Greg Hollister, USAF (Ret.) contacted the Selective Service, falsely impersonated President Obama, improperly registered his own address as President Obama’s address, and by this false impersonation and identity theft he managed to obtain a duplicate registration acknowledgement card with President Obama’s Selective Service information on it,” a blogger posted on gratewire.com last week. “This may violate several federal criminal statutes, and apparently caused the federal record of President Obama’s address with the Selective Service to be altered to show that he lives in Colorado Springs, CO.”
Hollister said Tuesday a private investigator, Susan Daniels of Ohio, gave him what is purported to be the president’s Social Security number. He then accessed the Social Security Number Verification Service to find out to whom it was issued and to access Selective Service documents.
The site allows registered users to verify names and Social Security numbers for employment purposes and warns that using it under false pretenses is a violation of federal law.
“According to the Social Security Administration, that number was never issued,” said Hollister, who challenged whether the president is an American citizen in a lawsuit the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Jan. 18 without requiring a response from the White House.
However, that’s the Social Security number that appears on the Selective Service documents Hollister obtained.
Hollister and others in the birther movement claim Obama was born in either Kenya or Indonesia and that his birth certificate showing he was born in Honolulu in 1961 is a forgery.
Being born outside the U.S. makes him ineligible to be president, they claim, because the Constitution requires the president to be a natural born citizen.
Hollister said the Social Security number on what he says is Obama’s draft registration begins with the numbers 042, which would be issued to someone born in Connecticut, not Hawaii.
Last week, California attorney Orly Taitz, who has led the legal challenges to Obama’s citizenship, filed an amended complaint in her latest lawsuit demanding Obama’s Social Security records, attaching as an exhibit the draft registration mailed to an address in Colorado Springs, according to the Reality Check Radio Blog.
It is unknown if the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Denver is investigating Hollister’s use of the data bases and obtaining Obama’s draft records.
Hollister denied breaking any laws.
“I was very meticulous and made sure everything I did was compliant with the law,” Hollister said, noting that he sent Obama an 1099 tax form.
A 1099 is an IRS income reporting form for independent contractors and free-lancers. Hollister did not explain how sending that to Obama complies with federal laws on the use of Social Security data.
Daniels said her doubts about Obama’s citizenship have only been reinforced by what Hollister found out.
Hollister said he started questioning Obama’s citizenship because as a retired Air Force officer he is subject to recall to active duty until he dies and he needs to be sure that Obama has the authority to give those orders.

Why do the sovereign states even need permission from the Federal government before they can begin exploiting natural resources that lie within their own borders? This is clearly a domestic issue, so how is it any of the government's business to begin with? Also, if a state simply chose to do so without first getting permission from the government, how exactly would they intend to stop them short of sending troops to occupy the oil fields, mines and other resource deposit sites? I say it's fine time that we find out just how they would react by drilling anyway. To hell with the Federal government. They need to be shown their proper place which is below us and the states.

Most of those undeveloped leases are undeveloped for a reason. A lot do not contain any economically recoverable hydrocarbons. Obama wants to take these leases back and try to resell them.

The whole Libyan comedy IMO, is clearly an impeachable offense. Constitutionally, Obama didn't consult with congress, nor did he request the "1973 War Powers Act." He can spin a UN mandate, and humanitarian causes, but can't claim nothing legal and binding to his oath of office.
