Offshore Drilling Moratorium Would Cost United States 175,000 Jobs Per Year Through 2035

During a 45-minute conference call with journalists from 40 major media outlets this morning, Jack Gerard shared some startling predictions about the future health of the nation’s oil and natural gas industry if the Obama Administration gets its way in adding more regulation and increasing taxes on offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The biggest one of all is enough to cause anyone to take pause:
“The administration’s moratorium, if continued indefinitely — or similar legislative proposals which would make the deep water unavailable or uneconomic — would cost this country 175,000 jobs every year between now and 2035, according to our latest analysis,” said Gerard, president of the American Petroleum Institute, a group representing some 400 oil and natural gas companies.
And that’s not all!
“The Gulf of Mexico accounts for 30 percent of our domestic oil production and 13 percent of natural gas,” Gerard explained. “The deepwater areas account for 80 percent of the Gulf’s oil production and 45 percent of its natural gas production. Twenty of the highest-producing leases are in the deep water.”
When one considers that the oil and natural gas industry, according to Gerard, supports 9.2 million workers and 7.5 percent of all U.S. gross domestic product, even a small percent of decline can have a tremendous impact on the economy.
According to an API-produced report released today, the economic impact of a complete shutdown of deepwater drilling would yield some awful results. For instance:
- Reduce direct and indirect employment in the oil & gas and its service industries by 93,000 jobs1 – every year through 2035;
- Reduce an additional 82,000 jobs every year through 2035 in non oil & gas related industries due to less income in the economy;
- Reduce annual GDP by over $20 billion per year or a cumulative impact of approximately $500 billion in the next 25 years;
- Reduce long-term U.S. oil production by 27 percent; and
- Increase long-term U.S. foreign oil imports by 19 percent.

And the Administration was told there were problems in February and the company asked for the government to advise them only to be told they were on their own and to continue.

I do not recall Bush calling for the moratorium on drilling, in fact if my memory is correct he did call for more drilling when entered office so that we could be self supporting when it comes to our needs of oil. But that was all shut down because we can not disturb the pristine views. Our choices are simply this:
1 we drill for our own oil so we are as dependent on other countries while we are trying to find better energy sources
or
2 we start ponying up the added monies to pay for the current alternate energy sources that are available.

The United States only has 5% of the world’s total lithium ore supplies used in electric batteries. We have 410,000 metric tones while Argentina, Bolivia and Chile have a combined 18,920,000 metric tones. Afghanistan has 50% of the total worlds lithium ore supplies.
Warren Buffet backed Chinese battery manufacturer BYD has stated it wants to corner the market on batteries for electric cars.
China has stated it wants to break in to the US & European auto markets with their cars
China has stated it wants to become the largest green car manufacturer

It is certainly is not unreasonable to have a moratorium to make sure we can say this was an isolated event and put procedures in place to make certain it doesn't happen again. prices to soar. A little fire, a small explosion, a change in season all were used as 'reasons' for fuel

figures that would have made us almost qualified to be an energy trader at times. Inventories, refinery
capacity, storage, bla, bla, bla on and on.

Oil prices rose to an out of control speculators market, not a reduction in oil supplies. It was all based on speculators selling options. If anything it shows how speculators can cause more damage than any OPEC conspiracy.

No, Obama announced expanded exploration to see if oil was there. He did not announce new drilling. And once the real jobs are sent overseas, I'm sure those people will be wealthy enough to come vacation in our newly made third world hell hole. I can think of several tourist hot spots that are only third world nations with a veneer. If those tourist jobs really brought in the serious bacon, they'd have workable economies and better status by now.
The argument as I understand it is that it will take at least siux months to do that. Hence the moratorium to make sure no one causes another spill in the meantime. It's a load of crap considering the same experts who said no to the moratorium also said any reforming and inspections would take six weeks, not six months.
