Retired Navy SEAL Questions Nation’s Priorities
by Bob McCartyEDITOR’S NOTE: President Barack Obama outlined his new strategy for waging his surge-and-retreat style of war in Afghanistan Tuesday night. Because that strategy will involve the expedited deployment of 30,000 more troops under the cloud of an announced timetable for withdrawal, I’m eager to offer the important guest post below. Written by a friend, it’s especially timely in light of the news that broke one week ago about three Navy SEALs facing assault charges for doing their job in Iraq. For fear of reprisal, the author has insisted on anonymity.
Court-martial over a bloody lip?
The recent news regarding the U.S. Navy SEALs who are facing trial by court-martial raises many questions about the current mental state of America’s military, its civilian leadership and the thoughts and feelings of the American people in general.
Evidently, right and wrong have traded places on today’s moral compass. What kind of military or government sends its finest, most well-trained warriors to capture a heinous terrorist, only to bring those special operators up on charges for “mistreating” the despicable enemy mastermind of the murder, disfigurement and desecration of the four Blackwater contractors in March 2004?
Is giving an enemy terrorist a fat lip as bad as shooting and killing four American contractors on a food delivery run? Is a bloody lip equal to dragging dead American bodies through the streets of Fallujah and hanging them from a bridge? Are a few bruises, normally associated with apprehending a non-compliant enemy combatant, as bad as lighting dead American bodies on fire and chanting while videotaping for the world to see?
As a recently retired Navy SEAL with combat experience in Iraq, Afghanistan and numerous other countries the Middle East, I am appalled and disgusted with the current trend of many Americans blaming our service members for doing their jobs. It is a tragic state when Special Operations personnel are given orders to bring our enemies to justice, only to be punished for the most trivial “discomfort” administered to their captives. What message does this send to all the other Special Operations personnel or the rest of the armed forces who may receive orders to execute similar missions?
The ranks of the three SEALs who have been charged indicate that they have been in Naval Special Warfare for a significant period of time. It is normal to accumulate experience and advanced training in close-quarters combat and prisoner or detainee handling at these levels (E5 and E6) in Naval Special Warfare.
It is a testament to these SEALs’ experience and exercising of control that Ahmed Hashim Abed was brought back in such good shape, with no gunshot wounds or broken bones. Mixed martial arts fighters sustain much more serious injuries during a prize fight for entertainment than the minimal injury that this enemy combatant suffered.
Capturing hardened enemy combatants is always dangerous and frequently results in fatalities and/or injuries far worse than a fat or bloody lip. The enemy does not want to be caught and has been known to fight to the death. Need I mention the enemy’s treatment of Americans they have captured? How does a bloody lip compare to having ones head sawn off on Al-Jazeera “news”?
In addition to condemning our service members for performing the combat roles for which they were trained, is it the goal of the U.S. military or its civilian leadership to continuously burden our warriors with unrealistic and dangerous rules of engagement?
The current rules of engagement indicate that we are not willing to use our advantages and strengths to exploit the enemy’s weakness – a basic and ancient fundamental for winning in combat. Whose side is our leadership on? It would seem that they are stacking the deck in the favor of our enemies.
Will the future include more court-martial proceedings for our fighters as reward for executing orders? Should our brave warriors use half measures and tactics that endanger them in combat and give the advantage to the enemy? Not in a logical country that wants to defeat its enemies and win at war.
Political correctness is winning this war for our enemies and, without a doubt, it is a war and our enemies consider it one — even if the U.S. liberal left does not.
Regardless of the Obama administration’s new label, “overseas contingency operations,” most intelligent Americans still believe we are at WAR with Islamic radical fundamentalists bent on erasing the USA, Judeo-Christian culture and the western way of life.
Through actions like prosecuting our service members for doing their job to protect and defend, we are signing our own death warrant and signaling the end of western culture.

High School students in Wrestling get fat lips sometimes-The tv show COPS have on film some guys getting fat lips while hitting the pavement from a car chase or falling from the fence they climbed or falling out of a hiding place. I'm confused. War environment is nowhere near as controlled as these. So we send military men who tax payers have paid into their training to the worth of a million dollar man and we condem him when he does what he was trained to do. Thats like a parent who teaches a child to speak, then spanks him for talking. This very assault on our military is a testimony that the leaders in office must be taken seriously and be fired from their jobs. Our freedom is from fighting in wars for our freedom, which no other country in the world can compare to our freedom we have in America. No other woman in the world has the freedom that American women have. We cannot let our tax paid leaders dissolve our military. We must be heard and we must vote out all who do not support our freedom.
How do we go about getting a court-martial for a Commander in Chief, based on obvious gross incompetence, dereliction of duty, and fraternizing with the enemy?
Damn straight. True Americans realize and appreciate what our soldiers risk and do to protect our freedoms every day. Terrorists deserve worse than a fat lip. Disingenuous politicians who’d rather help the enemy than do their job and protect us, deserve to lose their jobs. I hope our soldiers and these SEALs know that some of us still deeply appreciate them and what they do for us.

The really chilling part about this situation isn't that the media and politicians have run away with this political correctness BS.It's the fact that our military leadership has bought in to it as well.Because of it a muslim nut job murdered 13 people at Ft.Hood and no one wants to call it terrorism.Because of it the five terrorists who are responsible for 9-11 are being brought to civilian courts so they can have the same rights as American citizens.
These three seals should be given medals.Instead they're up on charges for doing their jobs.A job that they do better than anyone.It's an American tragedy and Barak Obama is directly responsible.Last years election was the blackest day in American history.

Someone explain this to me. These guys are accused of violating several regulations (including making a false statement). Regardless of whether you think the regulations *should* exist, it is crystal clear they do. So why, exactly, are we saying the military should pick and choose which regulations to enforce? That strikes me as a profoundly stupid thing to do, especially in the military where our soldiers must know that the rules will be enforced without fear or favor.
What, exactly, is wrong with waiting until we actually know something about the circumstances of the case and details about the charges against them before we go off half-cocked about how this is the great insult against soldiers EVAH or that this is the Death of America?
This is a pathetic travesty of justice. I guess until the war is here on a daily basis we will have idiots and namby pamby leadership passing judgement on those who daily risk their lives to protect ours. Some days we have nothing left but shame for America's leaders. The announcement of these trials was one of those days. Vindication will hopefully come soon for the soldiers and next November we will be reclaiming our pride at the ballot box.
I cannot fathom the reasoning behind this action, every day members of the military are injured in the normal course of duty whether its training or combat. And now some Politically Correct gas bag needs to justify his worthless existence by pursuing a lame case because some human trash got injured in the course of being captured. If the liberal scum of society has now infected our Armed Forces we are in more troubled than I could ever imagine. Where are our real combat leaders? Who the he!! castrated a once proud and effective service. The person who started this fiasco should have been given a Court Martial just for bringing it up, then put up before a firing squad for treason.

When they are released to do their jobs and exercise their skills, there will be hell to pay. And I am proud of them for kiling people and breaking things.

There are conflicting reports as to whether the poor poor widdle terrorist suffered a fat lip or was punched in the gut. A 3rd party witness account contradicts that of the terrorist and said the jerk looked fine. Yes the chain of custody of the prisoner has been an on going problem with this case because not only would the prisoner have been checked out by a Hospital Corpsman (HM) when he was brought in, he would have also been checked out before transferring custody to Iraq.

You apparently have never been in a life and death split second decision situation. Those who are there should be given every latitude to personal discretion. Only in cases of gross misconduct should anything approaching an investigation be conducted. This is just another sign of the pre 911 lawenforcement/criminal activity mindset. This is a WAR. I doubt they would find 3 officers that would be willing to convict these brave SEALs for acts with no credible evidence. Remember these SEALs asked for this court martial. Why? Cause they know that they are innocent. And when presented with the facts, those on the jury will find them innocent as well!
You mean the commander who asked the SEALs if they wanted a court martial or non-judical punishment. They had a choice, and if they took non-judical punishment, it would be a black mark on their record. They took the court martial because it was the only way to clear their names.
If I was the JAG attorney who was presented with this. I would put it in the dumpster. Any lawyer would see this as a dog of a case and quickly dispose of it and tell the SEALs to relax.
I might not have faith in the judical system as it is now, but I do in our military courts.

I was not a "snake eater" like the author; but, I worked with them peripherally in Viet Nam and saw first-hand what rough and dangerous duties they had to live with day in and day out. SEALs are professionals. They are not "Rambos" (that movie series is ridiculous). They protect us with their lives. They deserve our gratitude, respect, and, in my more informed opinion than I think our CINC has, they deserve a certain amount of slack when it comes to executing their orders. They don't waltz out into Indian Country on picnics. They go out on desperate missions, every one of which holds the possibility of death or serious injury.
There is a mind set in this country that arises from a broad base of ignorance about what reality is in the world beyond our borders. It is self-evident in the 20-20 hindsight and opinionating on such matters one can find on any network or cable news program. Talking heads dissect operations as though they were discussing scripted plays, not the terror and split-second decision-making that one finds in real battle. Wars should be fought hard, fast, and with maximum terror for the enemy, not us. That is the way to give us a much better chance of winning with a minimum number of casualties to our people.
Were it up to me, I'd maybe chew out the SEALs informally for the record, and then take them to the Acey-Deucy Club and buy them a few beers to thank them for a job well done and ask the fellow how good it felt to cold cock that dirty SOB they caught. That's how such things were handled in my "Old Navy."

Such stuff is learned on active duty, putting in the time and paying dues for the privilege of living in this great country. You haven't answered my question. There are rules. These guys are accused of breaking the rules. They will be tried in accordance with military policy, just like anyone else accused of breaking the rules. So far, this is exactly what it supposed to happen.
If yo don't like the rules, fine. But that's an entirely different matter, unless you're suggesting that we simply don't enforce the rules sometimes. That, however, would do far worse damage to our military than anything this story could ever do.
And that's why you don't run a military organization, isn't it?

FYI… I used to run the engineroom on a nuclear submarine as an Engineroom Supervisor. So… I USED to run a military organization. While it wasn't a combat unit it does qualify. Where did you serve to protect the freedom of your fellow American citizens? Just what do you think should be done when trying to arrest a guy who killed, burned, strung up and then dragged around the bodies of 4 dead contractors who were delivering food and water to poor people of his country? Should they hit him with feathers till he gives up? Maybe ask him to put the zip ties on and offer him a candy bar if he did so while dodging bullets? Do you even realize how ignorant you sound when saying a soldier should be tried for assault when arresting an enemy combatant who most likely resisted if he shows a small injury? Do you? I don't think you do and it is a shame, you should be ashamed.
There is no rule against using force to arrest an enemy combatant. Just what are you smoking?
