When SEIU Is The Devil At Your Doorstep
by Bret JacobsonRemember Brent Southwell, the business owner who says SEIU threatened to “kill” his company? Sadly, his experience isn’t unique. While BigGovernment.com readers have become increasingly acquainted with the tactics of unions like SEIU (and their allies in ACORN) to demonize American employers, the practice remains unknown to millions of Americans. Yesterday, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce held an event in Washington to spotlight smear campaigns (known in the jargon as “corporate campaigns”).

David Bego, a business owner in Indianapolis whom my fellow BG bloggers have referenced, gave an often emotional keynote speech outlining in great detail the nightmare experience of SEIU attacking his company. After telling the union he would not sign away the secret-ballot rights of his employees, he says the union responded that it would begin its attack, warning: “We enjoy conversation, but we embrace confrontation.”
In his book, The Devil At My Doorstep (Amazon), Bego writes:
One minute, we were enjoying the fruits of our labors minding our own business, and the next attacks begin lambasting the company as a “rat contractor” that cleaned buildings dubbed “Houses of Horror” for janitors who were exploited, intimidated, threatened, and abused all in the name of corporate greed. For the first time in our history, multiple National Labor Relations Board filings, frivolous charges with questionable evidence, would be filed against us for employee rights violations and for firing union supporters as the EMS image was dragged through the mud.
Americans have to wake up to what’s going on on shopfloors and in boardrooms across the country. U.S. businesses are being attacked and forced to swallow bad contracts and sign away employees’ rights to remain union-free — sometimes they are even denied the right to vote on whether they want to be union-free.
For those aware of ACORN and SEIU’s philosophical roots, an analysis of corporate campaigns by George Washington University professor Jarol Manheim uncovered strikingly familiar tactics and language:
- The corporate campaign was invented by the New Left in the 1970s, and by the 1990s was in widespread use by the labor movement. To date, unions have waged nearly 300 campaigns against employers, primarily, though not exclusively, to facilitate organizing.
- Corporate campaigns employ “power structure analysis” to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in the critical stakeholder relationships on which all companies depend. This broad strategic approach is then implemented through tactics that range from highly sophisticated financial and governance initiatives to street theater and even psychological warfare.
- Typically, the role of the corporate campaign today is to force management to accede to union demands for “card check and neutrality”—a process by which the union certification procedures administered by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) are effectively circumvented. A recent innovation here is the substitution of non-NLRB elections for card check, which has been coupled with a widening attack on the NLRB itself.

Sir, thank you for your article.
"We enjoy conversation, but we embrace confrontation.”
There is only one way to effectively fight fire, and that is with fire. "THEY" (the Unions) and their goons count on peace loving people turning from confrontation. That is how "THEY" win, and stay in power. There is only one effective way to fight the Union slugs, and their thugs: a scorched earth policy. It is time to fight fire with fire, and burn their goddamned house down! A scorched earth policy, and total purge is the only thing that will change this generational mindset. Going back to Jimmy Hoffa and his Teamster thugs, to the current crop of non-producers, it is time for a cleansing.
Looks like UNIONS have struck a deal with the Government !!! WTF !!!! I REPEAT WTF????
Were the government UNION employees going to go on strike ???? This "CRAP" is BU11SH1+"
Dam I am pissed and can anyone tell me why they get a deal … anyone ?????

America- take back your country Chapter Three…
None of what you are reading here is hyperbole. None of it is rumors, or supposition, or flights of fancy. This is an education in what happens when Communist revolutonairies (not-so-cleverly disguised as garden variety fascists)
seize control. THEY are agenda, not governance driven.
SEIU and Head Red Andy Stern are particularly onerous, and he has only been at the White House 20-odd times…
So, remember this. Tell your friends. Heck, tell your foes- get active, and take back your country!
Love the pic – had to steal it for my facebook pic and to share ….
Time to pass the Right to Work (without threat of union organization) and make it illegal for unions to organize government employers. It would also help if we could make it illegal for unions to secure government contracts or lobby on behalf of their union. The whole problem is the quid pro quo that exists between the government slush funds and politicians who depend on unions to be elected.
Is anyone really surprised that this is the corrupt result? We are at war for the future of our country, and pretending that is not the case guarantees our failure. We have to be willing to fight fire with fire.
Purple Peter Eaters acting up again! Still! Stand Up and embrace the Confrontation!
When they hit, hit back twice as hard!
Goons … mob goons
Along with the political class, and the MSM, unions must be part of the purges starting in 2010. This kind of activity is unacceptable in America, the land of the…until recently…free! Business owners move your companies to “Right to Work” states like Boeing from Washington state to South Carolina. Remove the host, and the parasites will die.
My God people….. it's truly getting out of control … I'm not sure when the riots will start but they will !!!!!! He is killing off America and turning us into a HUGO state !!!!!

2010 – time for "CHANGE "
It is time to go John Gault, it is easy for me. For those not in a position to adopt this philosophy, research it, do your best to get in that position. Especially if we fail in November of 2010.
Hey, they embrace confrontation right? I mean they're tuff, they have lots of thugs to back them up right? THEY EMBRACE IT! So will I.
Scorched Earth, never has the phrase found a more fitting application. Burn their goddamned houses down, now your talking the only language they speak. Effing punk crook thieves.
Grrr these stories tick me off and often times they're not the half of it as I know from personal experience.
I keep repeating as often as I get the chance, public sector labor unions ought to be legislated out of existence and it ought to be cemented into perpetuity. No business in the public sector, NONE.
msm? nope fringe media!!
You are right. Fringe Media.
They have relegated themselves into the dustbin of history.
The cutting edge will be Breitbarts "Big Journalism".
He shifted the paradigm on them. They are sitting out in the cold, and don't even know it, yet………
[...] the story of business owner Dave Bego who says he was told by SEIU “negotiators” that “We enjoy conversation, but we embrace confrontation.” And, of course, check out our litany of stories about [...]
That has been on my mind as well. At what point are we the people and the corporations we run going to simply say to the government – No! We will no longer tax our employees, we will no longer pay taxes to the government until the government represents the people.
If we the people have the courage to do this they simply can not lock enough of us up and their agenda will collapse. I, like many, have worked very hard to get where I am today and I'm tired of paying for those that won't work equally as hard. There are no guarantees of financial equality in this country – there is though an equality that allows anyone to become successful if they work hard.
If the union is to be busted it is going to take strength in leadership by those that own companies to stand up to them and just say no. Stop taking out union fees and giving it to them. Play hardball otherwise you are going to give you your company. Look at the car industry and airlines as an example. The only ones making money are those without unions with a minor exception or two.
I do not want to sacrafice my personal income any longer to help those who will not help themselves.
So where is John Galt?
I had my life threatened (explicitly) by a union thug when I worked at a mine. My crime? I offered an efficiency improvement that would prevent the need to have a worker 24-7 standing in one spot holding a hose at one spot. This had been going on for years. I suggested clamping a hose there or (horror) fixing the assembly line that was dumping product.
I agree that the SEIU and its like are problems. So is the Labor relations board and the government bureaucracy which helps make this intimidation possible. I also happen to agree with Vicodumb. We need our orgs like the NFIB or Chamber of Commerce to go toe to toe with these punks and wipe the floor with them. These punks have NO JOBS OR NO MONEY without US. Ive said it before-DONT PAY TAXES. IGNORE REGULATIONS. DO NOT COOPERATE WITH ILLEGAL “LAWS”. If necessary, set up a black market of trusted friends for doing business.
EFCA will bring an SEIU intimidation campaign to a neighborhood near you.
In fact, SEIU used children in Dave Bego's case to go door-to-door in a residential neighborhood and to march in a picket. Were there child labor law violations by SEIU?
I was living in Indy at the time this guy was being extorted by SEIU. At one point SEIU was trying to get a union into a local cleaning business, and was protesting. I was working in local television and I remember watching some video a reporter brought back from the pickett lines. The individual said something to the effect the he was not a maintenance worker, but was getting $12 an hour to walk with a sign. He was getting paid more to fake protest than what the maintenance workers would have earned if they got a Union contract.
Sure K McD, that's the dirty little secret. What the union collects from it's members, and doesn't squander on kooky politicians who promise to keep the slop flowing into the trough, they stick in their pockets. Those punks are next to their loathed Corporate bosses on a bar stool or pool side laughing at the people they represent for the chumps that they've been made into, laughing all the way to the bank.
IS THERE A SUGGESTION LINK OR A LINK TO THE ADMINISTRATOR WHERE I CAN COMPLAIN ABOUT THE GLITCH ON THIS WEBSITE?
Exactly; who are they being protected from anyway? Big, bad Government. Wait… these people are fans of Government, so it can't be big and bad.
Talk about utter lunacy!
Does everyone remember the part about 'defending against enemies, both foreign and DOMESTIC'?. Government is our Taliban, and unions, our Al Qieda. What are we to do?
The Union, ACORN, the Administration… They all use the same tactics! I hate the thought of stooping to their level, but it almost seems necessary! They are all SOOOO CORRUPT!
Remember that "civilian army as strong as the military" that the O promised? What "charity" do you suppose got that Nobel Peace Prize money, or the leftover $millions from the O's internet campaign fund?
Anyone wearing a purple shirt with SEIU on it who wants to "confront" me better have more than a club in his hand!
I think there is a good chance the goons from SEIU are going to be getting a taste of their own medicine more and more. It would do my heart good to see some purple clad morons spitting out some teeth.
I hate to but I must agree. It won't do my heart good seeing anyone hurt but push is rapidly coming to shove these days. You cannot yield in the face of aggression, appeasement is folly.
First thing I would do is NO UNIONS for Government workers!!!! Period !!!
remember the TSA agent got "paid time off" for leaving his post and the guy that went under the wire got a fine and jail…
TSA = government worker
guy = US Citizen
HOPE = 2010
Change = 2012
Amen to all….
remember this November stand outside polling booth with clubs because it is ok now to do this ….
be polite but cary a big stick !!!!
well im gonna do my part that 2 can play the union game so from this dat forward any company who a unio like the seiu smears or boycotts will get my business 2 can play that game
love the comparison good one
I did too!
Yes, from the Original "Rough Rider" Roosevelt. "Speak softly and carry a big stick"

The conditions at teh beginning of th elabor movement dicgtated that the workers organize to protect themselves and their families future. But, beginning in the late 1950's, labor unions "lost their way" and now they are driving businesses of all kinds out of the US. They now own part of GM and Chysler and those companies are just about out of business. The UAW has been a GM board member since the 1970's. But, again the behavior of business and government has helped greatly to make the labor movement bolder and with labor's "friends" in the government in control now, this is what you will get. Wade Rathke is already going global and telling US workers they are done and he is taking his business global just like business in the US.
Nutjobs, nutjobs, everywhere nutjobs… you should all PRAY for national health reform so you can seek treatment for your paranoid schizophrenia. If you think SEIU & ACORN are what is destroying America, you really do need to get your heads checked.
How many of you actually know an SEIU member? There are two million of them. Try talking to one. Hardly "thugs". Doctors, nurses, social workers, cleaners, security officers, bus drivers, other people who do all of the hard and often dirty work it takes to have a civilized society, although it appears there arent too many people here who know too much about civility. Grow up and get a grip on reality.
I noticed all the civilized union thugs talking nicely to all the people that held different views from them at the town hall meetings last year. They appeared very civil.
um, see the original comment above… on what plane of existance is anyone arguing that a doctor and bus driver be paid the same? I dont think you have any direct expreience with unions (hearing Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh talking about them does not count) and I know that you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. BTW… union members wages and benefits are on average 35% higher than thier non-union counterparts. The wages of American workers adjusted for inflation have fallen almost 35% since the 1970's in almost direct relation to the decline in union membership. Strong unions = a strong middle class and a healthy American economy. No unions = exploitation and poverty wages.
Southwest Airlines – non-union and kicking the rest of the airlines tails.
Wal-mart –evil incarnate I realize, but non-union and kicking the snot out of union retail joints.
I have flown almost excusively on Southwest airlines, and none of the employees appears to be exploited and they appear to doing pretty well financially. Maybe Wal-mart is paying poverty wages, but again, the people that work there appear to be doing ok.
The time for unions, for the most part, is past.
Without jobs or manufacturing in the US, why are there unions at all here?Oh, right because they are in the business of electing government officials…"crooked is as crooked does"
HEY SEIU ~ I ENJOY CONFRONTATION, BUT I EMBRACE CLOSE QUARTERS BATTLE
I got Atlas Shrugged For Christmas. Freakin' [excuse my language] spooky! I am wondering if any of it has been edited since it was first written. I almost can't believe some of the words/terms/names [ie Unification Board] that are used. It should be required reading to live & vote here-with a test!
Also have to add how illogical this all is–So the unions close a non-union shop/business down, which means less people have jobs, which means less people are paying taxes, which means these elected officials and the government employees these unions sponsor have less money to enact their liberal agenda..do you see where this is headed?
I share your outrage, Cowboy Logic.
I, too, was threatened by union goons. I got crazier than they did, which ended the threats. (No-one was physically harmed, but they certainly got the message.)
I agree, also, that retreat and sweet reasonableness doesn't work with uniion thugs. They are much like terrorists — to hell with that, they ARE terrorists, and I feel well within my rights to deal with them as I would terrorists.
You are correct, dcase. This is the actual factual stuff being revealed — not cherry-picking a few horror stories to blow the whole thing out of context.
Union thugs are terrorists. Their goals and methods are terroristic.
Very good comment, dcase.
The SEIU has a sympathetic administration doing the lifting for them presently but this will change. Stern and his goons had better enjoy it now because as the light of truth is shined upon them, they will be targeted for extermination. I say we go toe to toe with this bunch and see who's standing when the dust clears.
Connect the dots: organized crime – SEIU – the Chicago Outfit – Richard Daley – Barack Obama – Acorn – Rod Blagojevich – SEIU – Illegal Immigrants – Undocmuented Workers (think of hotel maids, etc. ) – SEIU (the Union that represents hotel maids – the nice ones who do a great job but don't speak a lick of English) – Acorn – Voter Fraud – the Census – Acorn – Congressional Districting – Rahm Emmanuel – Acorn – law preventing census workers from asking people if they are citizens – Rahm Emmanuel – Congressional Re-Districting – Acorn – SEIU.
I connected all the dots and it came out to an outline of Mao. Weird.
How about this plan… businesses who are fed up with union intimidation should just move their companies, and their jobs, to 'Right to Work' states. Believe me, in this economy, there's NO reason companies should stay in states hell bent on destroying small business and jobs.
Nice try. You sound like a German after WWII. You're just a member… you're not one of the 'bad' ones. You didn't take part in any of the bad stuff, you just pay your dues and let the 'others' do the dirty work. You're actually worse than the thugs. You're an enabler.
You're right about SEIU & ACORN not destroying America, though. It's not they who are destroying America. It's the legion of socialists and communists who support them. And if a drunk with a gun tells you you're paranoid if you think they're going to shoot you, then you deserve to be shot if you don't act in your own best interests. Now go troll another BG comment thread.
That's WHY there are no jobs here. You can't pay a union wonk 5 times what the job's worth and expect a company to continue to do business here. That's why Andy Stern is trying to unionize the world. If they control workers globally, there will be NOWHERE for companies to go for reasonable labor.
One word on how to neutralize a rabid SEIU creep…tazer
Speak for yourself. Why should a doctor be forced to take the same salary as a bus driver? How does he pay off his school loans and why should he bother to become a doctor in the first place? Why should he be forced into a union when it's not in his best interests? Why should any worker be forced into a union and have to pay dues in exchange for a few crumbs, only to see the money go to keep a particular political party in power regardless of that worker's own political bent?
Better yet, force the issue with state officials and legislators — organize friends, neightbors and relatives and campaign to make Right to Work the central issue for your state.
These SEIU thugs are cowards at heart. I remember when one came to try and recrute me. Before he couls start in on his lies i really let him have it. I told(yelled at) him that he and his orginization were a bunch of Marxist-Heathens. I wanted nothing to do with union. I then said that he was violating the agree rules between my company and SEIU that they would not try and recute us when workingand also tresspassing on private property. I told him to leave now or I will call the police. He asked for my name and address so he could remove them from his list. I saw through that. I knew he did not have my name and address because my company did not give out the names of those who specifically requested that they not do so. So I refused him. He left with his tail between his legs. Stand up to these bullies and they will flee.
Didin't our LIAR-IN-CHIEF say that SEIU's agenda was his agenda? For the ignorant sheep that voted for this clown, how do you feel about your annointed one now? OneBigAssMistakeAmerica!
When SEIU Is The Devil At Your Doorstep
by Bret Jacobson GREAT ARTICLE!
The SEIU is the "NEW MOB" IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OUT TO CONTROL THE WORKERS OF THE WORLD!
IT'S ALL ABOUT POWER AND CONTROL, NOT "WE THE PEOPLE !"
Yep-Its all about the money
More members = more dues
More Dues = more money
More money = more power
Here's how you handle SEIU, just like the Weekly Standard reporter should have handled the situation:
http://bit.ly/65gilJ
WE ARE IN THE MIDST OF SOME OF THE SADDEST DAYS IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY. WE HAVE BEEN TAKEN OVER BY THE UNION GOONS AND THE CHICAGO GOONS. IF WE DON'T WAKE UP OUR FREEDOM WILL DISAPPEAR IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE WHILE WE SIT BACK AND WONDER WHAT HAPPENED.
Reality Check
Its not necessarily about the SEIU member, its the union whose number 1 goal is money. I've been in campaigns and in negotiations. The SEIU is most interested in union dues. When they come to the bargaining table their first two priorities are mandatory membership and dues checkoff (company required to collect the unions money). What the SEIU and all other unions do is give up employee priorities for their own. Then when employees dont get what the union promised—-they say–we will get it in the next contract-maybe 2-4 years later. So while the employees are paying dues and getting the same or less then what they had before the union—the union gets its money!
The union is the thug, and the leaders and organizers. Not its members.
they cannot help being who they are- and to a certain extent that's a good thing. You KNOW what they're all about…
SEIU nothing more than paid thugs of the left. These are legitimized mafiosa. The purple shirts are the new brown shirts!
I'm just now reading this thread as I've been working my arse off in keeping folks employed. Now, am I one of the few CEO's of a large California business that eagerly awaits SEIU to come knocking? A female CEO for that matter? C'mon Andy, where are your thugs?
Confrontation? Yeah uh huh, how cute. In all seriousness I embrace the attempt as this is the only way to begin thinning out your herd Andy.
Oh and you can find out products under most kitchen sinks in America including yours I'm sure so I want to thank you publically for your business and your money that goes to a Union Free enterprise.

[...] One hates to surmise, but it seems probable such a shift comes from such little things as crippling the Big 3, pushing card check on working Americans, cutting disgusting deals to exempt their members from a new tax on healthcare plans, pimping ACORN, and just being all-around-un-swell guys. The unions are striking to much!!!
