SEIU’s Texas Roadshow: Will They ‘Kill’ Your Company?
by Bret JacobsonYesterday, Rep. Mark Kirk offered a great illustration of the relationship between ACORN and SEIU. A part of that chart is worthy of a further look: The relatively unknown story of how SEIU and ACORN took their act from Illinois Southward to mess with Texas and allegedly threatened to kill one man’s business because he wouldn’t toe the union line.

Most people know that unions haven’t done as well in the South as in industrialized (and economically troubled) Northern states such as Illinois and Michigan. So, in 2006 SEIU decided it would bring its brand of “justice for janitors” to Houston to set up a new foothold in the South.
First, SEIU set up a swank new office in a bank building and budgeted $1 million to organize Houston janitors. Then it took to the city streets, disrupting traffic and drawing the ire of Houstonians. A local judge even sentenced out-of-state SEIU protesters for their actions.
Eventually, they got several big janitorial companies to cave to a card check organizing campaign. But one man, Brent Southwell of Professional Janitorial Services, said it wasn’t his choice of whether his employees joined the union– it was his employees’ choice.
That’s when the union turned goonion. In addition to setting up the notorious inflatable union rat that unions love, SEIU took to contacting Southwell’s clients and protesting outside buildings. The Wall Street Journal reported:
Among other things, the union sent letters to Houston building owners, questioning whether Mr. Southwell’s workers were paid fairly and urging them to reconsider their business relationship with his company. A Labor Department investigation — the department wouldn’t comment on the reason for the probe — didn’t find any wage violations. Still, the letters and leafleting continued, and Mr. Southwell sued the union, saying its tactics amounted to defamation. Mark Jodon, a lawyer for Mr. Southwell, contends that his company will lose nearly $10 million from the loss of 14 existing and five prospective accounts with building owners.
But here’s what no one else has mentioned: The allegation contained a bombshell. The suit says a top SEIU organizer “has stated directly to PJS that SEIU wants ‘to kill’ PJS.”
Imagine a union threatening to come “kill” your company because it didn’t want you to have the choice to choose a secret ballot. No wonder they’re spending so much time and money trying to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, which would effectively eliminate secret ballots altogether.
Mr. Southwell’s suit against SEIU continues.

Apalling!
Hard to imagine a Union of thugs threatening to kill anyone………
Sue on Mr. Southwells! Texans flat out reject unions and will continue to do so.
I am sure our new Labor Secretary Hilda Solis will take care of any unjust actions taken by SEIU. If you want to read about her this should be enlightening.

ACORN is behind the paint industry shakedown – aka "lead paint remediation" – lawsuits in Milwaukee and by the state of Wisconsin. Shakedowns and protection rackets are a bit component in their "organizing" with cooperation from many levels of the local political and city machines.

In the early 20th century, unions played a critical role in improving employees quality of life. Their is a place for unions in the US. However, that place is not politics, it is not extortion and it is not intimidation. The pendulum has swung entirely too far in the other direction. Just as in the country as a whole, it is not constitutional for any one person or group to hold sway over everyone else. Unions need to be challenged and kept in check before they unionize themselves right out of a job… along with the rest of us.
Bertha, don't you know, don't mess with Texas! These liberals have no concept of how they are reviled across the nation.
Anyone know where there is a list of businesses by city that the SEIU has infiltrated?
I need this want to know which businesses I will never go to here in Austin or elsewhere.
Rick Perry ought to grow a set and have the Rangers investigate ACORN in Texas…….
Does PJS have a legal defense fund?

Interesting article about "Devil Wade" Rathke.
http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=YWRjNmFj...
Further interesting questions in it, to him from Big Government reporter. Don't forget that Rathkes brother, after he was caught embezzeling from ACORN, was quietly moved over to the SEIU. Sound like a shell game? The Rathke Bros. are the peas, hiding under numerous shells………..
unions r great until u find out u cant think 4 yourself people had better wake up 1984
Unions = inefficient businesses, mediocre service, and a weak economy
Thank your local union organizers.
Texas is a RIGHT TO WORK state. Unions cannot force workers to join! TX Atty General Greg Abbott needs to get ahold of this and go after SEIU. He is a barracuda in going after wrong doers.
Someone needs to get this to him ASAP!
The founders of Acorn here in New Orleans had a pitty party review this morning in the Times Picayune. Pooor Dale & Wade. All of your friends have left you and you have no one to drink with or party with. I'll even bet no ones wife wants to play with you any longer.
Listen up boys at acorn, Justice moves as slow as ice but you are now starting to see it is coming. No need to pack your stuff you won't be needing it in prison. Hey I might even visit your ugly butts with my Girlfriend and to think I do not have to pay her to be with me as you clowns do with yours.
So boys are you going to tell the world where all of 200 properties that acorn stole from the city of new orleans and where all the rental money is? Start naming names boys and make sure you name everyone your bribed, blackmailed and or forced to do what you wanted. I figure there are at least 1000 people nationwide that need time in jail

They tried in the late 70's to change our TX constitution to make this a closed shop state—didn't work.
There are liberal pockets here, the biggest is Austin and Travis county. Austin is the "Land of the Loons" so you always have to be on your toes.
Texas had better run off those unions, they are a cancer in this country, and made a lot of people brain dead.
Wonder what all those workers would do if half the businesses just said, screw this, and shut the doors. Think the unions would start businesses and hire them back? Doubt it.
I am curious, If Obammy and his Mammy are able to buy the Olympics for Chicago and bring home the bacon, will the jobs created be Union or Non-union jobs? Will the SEIU play a role in signing up new union hands and will they be shaking down the businesses in Chicago? If all the border states want to solve their illigal problem, they ought buy them all a bus ticket and send them to Chicago. Tell them that the SEIU is on a membership drive.
You got it Anna, this is a right to work state and I love it. I live in Houston and remember when those idiots were protesting… They did not do it peacefully, they were out IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET at Westheimer and Post Oak (a very busy intersection) in the middle of the Gallarea. Blocking traffic at lunch time and causin just a big stink.
Here's a link to video by an employer that was targetted and harassed by SEIU for three years:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djjt22emAck
Gosh I see that SEUI uses tatics borrowed from Jessie Jakson with just a little twist of their own. ACORN, SEIU and the other orgs. need to all be looked into by a RICO investigation.
Come on Obama, Pelosi, Reid WE THE PEOPLE demand that this corruption stop.
I'll bet the folks at River Oaks were just aghast!
What was supposed to be surprising, that they would do this at all, or they would be so blatant about it?
All they care about is building control by growing the organization. Unions care less about workers having jobs than they do about controlling the companies that employ whatever workers are left. Look to Detroit for the evidence of that.
Community Organizing is libspeak for extortion. Eventually the RICO statutes will be found to apply to ACORN. Should be fun to watch.
Unions STINK and do NOTHING for the people ( employees ) they claim to help AND once in any company, they destroy it !
Even 70 years ago, unions were corrupt and vile; not to mention infiltrated/run by crooks and card carrying COMMUNISTS. Even in their earliest history, unions were MARXIST/COMMUNIST and violent.
Where is the DOJ and the FBI?
Strangely absent. The silence is deafening, and indicting……….
Texas has taken pretty tough legal action in the past few years against forced labor union membership. If they try that crap here the state won't hesitate to drive them back to New Orleans.
As a native Texan, I'd recomend SEIU take head of our state slogan and "Dont Mess With Texas", this is a far cry from Illinois.
We are in the fight of our lives. These thugs must be revealed.
Unions have become the real domestic terrorists.
Just sayin'.
Wish I had known SEIU was in on this activity as I myself live in Houston and remember the disruption in the middle of the intersection of Westheimer and N. Post Oak very well.
Probably a good thing I didn't know.
I didn't know there was so much animosity one person could have for so many corrupt organizations that are tied to one person in as high a position as this president is.

Sorry, but unless you repeal most of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA, 1935), this is the future of America…or maybe Amerika?
From a nice little article on Unionization:
…The NLRA forced employers to remain silent on the question of unionization. It was none of their business. It was up to the employees and the unions, without intervention from the employers, to decide the issue of unionization. Section 8(1) made it an “unfair labor practice” for an employer “to interfere with” the employee’s decision to unionize. While interference by means of force or fraud are properly enjoined, “interference” in the form of honest expressions of opinion to the effect that unions are bad for workers are not. …

Isn't that unconstitutional?
It sounds like they are effectively limiting the 1st amendment for employers.
Too bad there isn't a business with the balls to break that law and then take it all the way to the Supreme Court.
Amen brother, what goes around, comes around…ultimately, two wrongs make…two wrongs. These two bruthas are going to find out how wrong they are soon.
I <3 HOUSTON!!!!! Wouldn't want to be anywhere else!!! I stand ready to die for this state and our freedoms.
And the "plot" thickens…

SEIU needs to be exposed the same way that ACORN has been exposed. This is just disgraceful.
And no one got hurt??? What a shame. If ever there was a place that would invite road rage in Houston, it would be in the Galleria area. Especially if 610 was under construction at the time. What idiots.
we shall prevail, keep your powder dry and you guns locked and loaded..
commies beware, we are the Ghost of McCarthy and you are fucked..
It sounds as though Mr Southwell could very well need a defense fund set up on his behalf. Defending yourself against frivlolous lawsuits can cost business owners hundreds of thousands of dollars. And thats not chump change. Those types of fees could put you out of business in a hurry. I'm praying for you AND your attorneys Mr Southwell.
All these community organizing committees need to be DE-funded, and put out of business.
It's organized crime for thieves and lazy people.
As Kansas in the 1850's will be America soon enough if Acorn/SEUI et al keeps up.
I want to move to Texas!
(sigh…) We are here in the ACORN heartland…
Has Glenn Beck covered this story yet? He needs to get this guy on his show to expose SEIU and their tactics.
Texas ain’t a fluffy poodle like what SEIU is used to, we’re a Rottweiler! You don’t mess with Texas, cause we mess back. They chose the wrong state to try to pull their Chicago style thuggery. If they try to use intimidation tactics in their protests I feel it only fair to warn them that this a concealed-carry state. We’re armed and we know how to shoot straight unlike you pansies from Chicago. BRING IT!

I wish they’d use this energy and my money to come out to Calif and represent us. We’ve only been paying dues for years now The Governors running amuck with 20% paycuts and threating more.. SEIU wouldn’t need to threaten anyone into joining if they only represented the members.

Very interesting article. Couldn’t of written any better. Reading this post reminds me of my old friend. He constantly kept speaking about this. I will send this post to him. Pretty sure he will have a good chuckle. Thanks for sharing!
The Union goons are swarming our hospital and we are fighting it as best we can, but everything we do, they
file complaints or threaten our administration with lawsuits. We had a demo in front of our hospital and one of the union "organizers" took off her badge, cozied up to the TV reporter, identified herself as a nurse, & proceeded to
try to take over our media coverage… They have a huge budget & everything we do we have to pay for out of our pockets…they have dozens of out-of-towners harassing the people who are too polite to tell them to "Take a hike!". HELLLLLLLLLLLLP!!!
