Will SEIU Take Care Of Your Grandmother?
by Bret Jacobson
… and will your state government give them the power to do so?
Kansas’s Democratic governor has just announced he’s thinking better of his decision to use the state’s resources to help the Service Employees International Union target home care workers as new union members.
SEIU — part private sector union and part government union — grows by getting friendly Democratic governments to allow the union to collectively bargain for independent home care workers paid by state agencies.
Sure, it’s a bad deal for taxpayers: rates go up and their side of the “negotiating” table is run by a union toadie. It’s gotten so bad that unions even try to organize foster parents. But it’s a good deal for the union, which then gets to feed off the taxpayer trough, and for the politicians who get coveted union financial and logistical support during elections. SEIU, in particular, has worked this scheme in several states — including in Illinois with its ACORN-founded Local 880 and its game of footsie with disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
A former ACORN organizer studying the group wrote in 2005:
Local 880’s role in the fall 2002 Illinois gubernatorial campaign may hasten recognition of the [childcare] union by the state. Local 880’s political action committee, with major support from the International Union and the SEIU state council, worked hard to elect Rod Blagojevich as the first Democratic governor in Illinois in over twenty years. In return, Blagojevich agreed to support recognition and collective bargaining rights for both homecare and family child-care providers if he were elected governor. In February 2003, he signed Executive Order 2003-8 granting collective bargaining rights to over twenty thousand personal assistants (homecare workers) from Local 880’s DHS/ORS unit …
Of course, Blagojevich went on to give ACORN/SEIU exactly what it wanted, as have other politicians in his place. So back to Kansas: why might Democrats want to help SEIU? The Star Topeka reports:
The SEIU has been a key supporter of Democratic candidates across the country. Last year, the union gave $100,000 to a political action committee controlled by Kathleen Sebelius, Parkinson’s predecessor and now the U.S. secretary of health and human services.
The SEIU also gave $31,000 to Sebelius’ campaigns for governor

Is the Gov. of kansas an idiot? Oh, pardon me, it is a silly question. He is out of his friggin mind is more like it.
How can we stop all of this?
The SEIU is just the big brother of Acorn. Wouldn't ya know it, our dear leader has worked with both. As he said, "I'm not new at this." The more control these groups get, the more money they get. The more money, the more power and therefore, the more political clout. We need federal investigations – NOW!
Kathleen Sebelius? Isn't she the smart lady that is teaching us all to sneeze and cough into our elbow? I can't wait for the next lesson:
1. Bend over
2. Grab ankles
3. Kiss you sorry ass goodbye………..

This news means nothing if it does not connect with the people and inspire them to actually pick up the phone and call/write/email a Congressman or elected official to speak their minds! This news means nothing if it does not inspire people to get up off of the couch and demand an end to the tyranny! Get up off of the couch people, and do what you can to save this great country! Make a loud noise! Be heard!
UNIONS are killing us….. We can not bounce back from this… Obama said he would build an army as big as the current one and he was not lying… They are actually bigger…. FIGHT BACK>>>>>>>>> Before we have no way out….. Everyone wake up and fight with everything you have……. If it gets any further we will not be able to come out of this.. We are already up to our necks in the quicksand… FIGHT…
Dick Morris brought up on hannity last night that ACRON had a $800,000 tax bili it needed to pay and funny how Obama happen to give them $800,000 to get out the vote "for him" of course.
Not stating it's true but one can only hope (and change)
Bret,
If by the phrase "take care of Grandma" you mean, will they teach her to stop running her mouth at town hall meetings, then my answer is yes. I think SEIU would "take care of" all of us if given the chance….and by "chance" I mean with no cops around.
in illinois they want to unionize home caregivers. how is that going to work? sorry son who i left my job for, and stayed home to take care of, but the union said i need to go on strike, and i can no longer feed you. the union says i need to shakedown the state for more money, to pay higher dues, but i cannot afford my tax bill now, so you get to starve. and after i agree to pay more taxes, they will pay me more money, so i can pay higher union dues, and then i can feed you again, but now it will have to be dog food, because i can nolonger afford real food. oh, and new union workplace rules state that while i can feed you, a thirst quenching assistant now must be present to give you water, otherwise the shop steward will file a greviance.
is this what the union wants for homecare givers??
SEIU Andy Stern was on The Ed Show last night on MSNBC selling his snake oil aka public option. Sickening.
you should consider renaming this site http://www.Douche-bags-Anonymous.com. I mean, it's not support group that you have here, but there are an awful lot of douche-bags around here, and you all need to remain anonymous on account of the fact that you're all cockless cowards.
So what do y'all think? Good?

We, the citizens of the United States of America, aware of our civil rights and in an effort to stop funding to corrupt organizations, hereby express our disapproval of the US Governments lack of attention to the corruption within.
We are aware of the corruption within Acorn, who has received more then 53 million of our tax dollars. We feel corruption exist in many offices and branches of the US Government. We have made repeated attempts to express our concerns, these attempts have been well documented. We feel our immediate and long term future is in jeopardy if this issue is not addressed immediately.
On the basis of the above, we respectfully call on Congress to pass legislation that mandates the immediate investigation of all offices and branches of the US Government. "Corruption Elimination Act" We also request that any party suspected of corrupt activities be immediately suspended of their duties until a thorough investigation is done.
If immediate action is not taken, we will be forced to pursue our legal rights and potentially take part in a Class Action lawsuit against the US Government. We hope our Voices will be heard, and this matter can be resolved in a timely manner.

Wow…

hey Kathleen, don;t worry, if someone ask you a question just say you didn't know much about SEIU and thier eis more important things going on right now…. "she's been bought and paid for"
"NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — Police say a worker with the activist group ACORN who was caught on video giving advice about human smuggling to a couple posing as a pimp and a prostitute had reported the incident to authorities.
National City police said Monday that Juan Carlos Vera contacted his cousin, a police detective, to get advice on what to with information on possible human smuggling."

As far as trolling goes, you might as well have used the more traditional "dick," although I can see the argument that we are not Dick Cheney-less therefore there may be confusion.
Bonus points for complaining about anonymous posters while posting anonymously. Oh, did you lose yours in some tragic accident, or just never have one?
Wow he contacted his "cousin" – why did he not menetion this we ACORN had it's big interview to support him BEFORE they fired him…
Public employees should not be unionized. PERIOD. The whole concept is anathema to a republican form of government. Public monies are appropriated by the legislature, not some bargaining unit of a state agency. The employees view the government (i.e. the PEOPLE) as an adversary, not their employers and superiors. The entire concept makes me shudder.
Is our collective memory so short that we forget the air traffic controllers? They believed themselves so important that the rule of law meant nothing. We should be eternally grateful the the President (a former union president himself) put an end to THAT. But why, oh why, must we continually have to re-learn the lessons of our past?
They are making independent workers be represented by unions? Is that even constitutional?
What is next, they do the same to homemakers (or "domestic engineers" as my mom referred to herself)? Will they do this to "landscapers" and I have to cough up dues to mow the lawn or trim a shrub?
History time, people.
Turn back your clocks to the summer. California's Assembly, faced with a staggering deficit to close, finally kicks and screams its way to a hard-fought compromise budget which passes by a single vote.
Whew! Right?
Nope. Almost immediately, Barack Obama calls Gov Ahnold personally and threatens California with a *complete cutoff of stimulus funds*- unless the budget deal is redone so as to immunize SEIU home healthcare workers from budget cuts.
Hey, no corruption here……..
And this is the guy who will be conducting Big Bertha's "independent" investigation of ACORN. You couldn't make it up.
How many people use daycares that are paid for with state vouchers? Thus workers being paid for by state funds, thus by this reasoning can be forced to be represented by a union. How many parents want to find out their daycare now only uses "approved" diapers that must be bought on site? I am certain they will also love the new "bio-hazardous waste disposal" charges, diaper changing now requires a disposable hospital gown, mask, and gloves. Worker safety first! Oh yeah, better for the kids too, I guess. Feel free to wave at the unionized driver and his two unionized assistants when the hazmat disposal truck comes around.
Unions 1, Sanity 0.
About the unions. They are a cancer. That's why they only represent 12% of the workforce.Which is one of the many reasons why having Obama and the democrats in charge is so dangerous.Unions are throwing their weight around now because of Obama. The SEIU a government workers union is run by Wayne Rathke the brother of Dale Rathke who embezzled 1million dollars from Acorn and was never charged. If unions are allowed to get any more power than they already have this economy will crash even worse than it already has.
Unions came to the Gulf Of Mexico and tried to organize the oil field workers and they were ridden out of town on a rail. The main maritime union on the East Coast went on strike for over two years and they had their backs broken.
The UAW is the reason that cars went from $10,000 to $40,000 to $60,000 and they got tens of billions of dollars from Obama.Bunch of zombies on production lines. It looks like most Americans have come back to their senses and the Democrats should be through in 2010.Just hope we can slow down the damage that they're doing before then.
Yes you are correct, I remember that. I think we are in big trouble.
ACORN has several mini political parties, this is the one thing that everyone is missing,.

I don't need the Nanny State taking care of Granny; we keep her in the basement and she is quite happy. She has her own mattress on the floor, a port-a-potty and a beer cooler. What more could she want? We cash her Social Security checks for her and slide the change under her door. She even babysits the kids for us when we go to NASCAR. When it's time for her to go to the happy hunting ground, we'll just shove a pillow over her face. Or call Dr. Jack Kevorkian…………
SEIU, ACORN, Congress and Obama administration…synonyms?
It's Not like SEIU has not put a persons life at risk before, to call a STRIKE
Los Angeles, California (July 3, 2008) – Federal labor board officials in Los Angeles will
prosecute the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 121RN for illegally threatening
nurses at the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center with financial penalties and arrest for refusing to abandon their patients during a union-ordered strike.
Last October, SEIU officials ordered a general strike after the collective bargaining agreement
between the union and the hospital expired, but many nurses refused to abandon their patients. To continue treating patients during the union-ordered strike without union retaliation, the nurses
resigned from formal union membership. However, union bosses – citing an unenforceable California state law deterring “strikebreakers” (i.e. dutiful employees) – told the nurses that they could face stiff fines and even up to 90 days in jail if they did not join the strike. With free legal aid from National Right to Work Foundation attorneys, nurse Carole Jean Badertscher filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Quick story for everyone. I draw blood in a primary care facility. Just a moment ago, I had a caucasian woman in her 50's come in. She complained about filling out her paper work and her wait for the doctor, which is pretty common. Then, she said, I'll be so glad when Obama gets his way and we don't have to fill this out anymore. I almost fainted from a mixture of shock and laughter. As though the electronic medical record system is his idea! So I say, "Ma'am, if Obama gets his way, you'll have to wait alot longer than two hours to see a doctor." She just shook her head increduously and said uh hu, nope. People like this get driver's lisences and drive cars! Are you kidding me?!!!
The unions had their usefulness when they were first organized. Now, they have outlived it and need to fade into history. Unions are one reason we cannot compete in the world stage. They take more than they give and talk a good talk.
Same goes for AARP, they don't represent my values anymore. They, too, have dug themselves a deep hole.
Great just what we need lazy people that will cut corners so they get overtime taking care of PEOPLE… Um.. no. If a nurse is a part of SEIU (or any union for that matter) I will not hire them to take care of my parents if they ever get to that point… :/ and I will fight tooth and nail to not have the Government take care of my parents either..
UAW is in the aerospace industry as well (I know because my husband is an engineer for one of them that has 2 chapters of UAW, one for the technicians and one for everyone else BUT the engineers)…. They are consistantly lazy and are consistantly having "accidents" and messing up projects (for overtime)…. When they went on strike and the Engineers had to do not only their work but the work of the Techs, the number of accidents went down to 0 and the number of "screw ups" dropped by 2/3 and productivity went up by 75%… I wonder why… it's because in a union the workers have no accountability but all the benefits… :/ If the Tech isn't doing their job and an Engineer steps in to get a project finished, the Engineer gets repremended by the Union… it's such a joke that the Engineers are to the point that they have a contest to see how many repremends (I can't remember the official name of it) they can get by the Union.
You are absolutely correct! Unions are simple a Marxist marketing tool; they exist to protect th jobs and "rights" of those who are either too lazy, or too stupid to survive in private industry. They promote the mindset that "Big brother" will protect their members. It is total bullshit! Propaganda perpetrated upon the mindless minions by union organizers, union boses and "Community Organizers". It is nothing but Liberal Fascist Militant hyperbole……….
I sailed as a scab for two years during the East Coast strike. Before the strike I couldn't have gotten a job up there.Since then it's been opened up to all Americans. After spending two years on those union boats I came away thinking the union motto is"Make as much Money as you can for the least amount of Work Possible".Those boats were in deplorable condition and those guys made a ton of money.

Ha Ha I live in San Diego and National City is a Scum town filled with drugs and prostitution. I wouldn't doubt his cousin helps him smuggle the children in.
I don't get it. Cockless rednecks? I thought them country folk had lots of chickens. Urban leftards are far more apt to be cockless, and in your case you seem to be johnsonless as well.
Start by looking to see who gets money from SEIU or any of the other leftist tentacles, then don't vote for them. It isn't exactly much, but it's a start.
My daughter is an independant care-taker for a local family in Illinois. The SEIU is trying to organizing her into a Union. A couple of weeks agp when she was at her job a union rep stopped by. She immediately felt threatened as she told them up front and in no certain terms she would NOT want to be in a Union. She repeatedly asked them to leave and finally had to call the police! The rep would not take No for her answer! I stayed with her the next day with a baseball bat….I was going to make sure they could hear me now!
Unions are parasites. My brother-in-law worked for GM for 28 years, on the line. He worked with losers who slept in their cars to avoid work and pressured him not to work overtime when asked. End result? Plant closed, all jobs eliminated… Anyone lucky to get a retirement package is AOK, bro-in-law has full medical and retirement thanks to the govt(taxpayers) bailing out GM. Go Figure.
Wonder how long it will take for the White House to "lose confidence" in Glenn Fine, the way they did with Gerald Walpin.
We'll see if what's happening to Acorn is legite or just a big political smokescreen.Acorn and SEIU are brothers in arms.Lots of powerfull people.Opening up Acorn will lead straight to SEIU and Obama. There's a big light shineing on Acorn so its hard to say.But like I said to many powerfull people.See what people really think come 2010.Til then keep on your reps and hang on for the ride……I'll lose the zombie line!!
That depends on what the definition of "take care" is. Does she get the pill? The shovel? The pill and then the shovel?
The SEIU is just another tool of the Statist movement in America.

Thank you so much for covering this. As a personal care assistant in Kansas I was very taken back when I learned about this. Unfortunately my personal information had already made it into SEIU hands before our governor backed off. I am embarassed, and a little stunned, that our state produced such a horrible governor (both Sebelius and Parkinson). Hopefully those who elected these folks will get it right next time.
I can't wait to find out that SEIU is directly tied to ACORN, and hopefully will be disbanded (and unfortunately re-formed, as opposed to reformed).
BTW, for those that have never been in a union, it is not good…they take your money, sorry…dues, and do nothing for you. (I was in the Aerospace Union for years…In Chicago no less.)
If you are in a union and like it, you are most likely part of the administrative part of the union (the problem), or you are just unaware of how you are being raped.

IN TEXAS WE SAY COME AND TAKE IT…
I haven't seen one story in the news since Nixon that's gotten Americans off their A$$es. OH.. We can complain! But when it comes to actually backing up the words, We've become impotent. Other third world countries wouldn't take this from their Governments, & have many times gotten off the hammock tom hit the streets. Citizens in Honduras, China, Iran, Yemeni, I can name countries all day where citizens have more honor, & conviction then we do here. I don't think I've ever been ashamed of my country as I have been for the last year or two. I'll tell you what you do lazy people. Sit there, don't hit the street in protest. Wait for the nite when we're all snug in bed, after Obama has weakened our Military might, whats left of our reputation for being strong.. that will be the night when we're attacked. That will be the night when all of "us" can say, "I had a chance to make a difference, & prevent this, but I didn't.. Oh well.. guess I better bury my loved ones." Its coming. Whether it be N Korea, China, Iran, Venezuela. All of these Countries, & more have access to our Sea Ports. One well placed Nuke (go ahead.. Laugh) its over. so sit!
Yes he said he contacted hi cousin the cop, but did you notice it was supposedly 2 days later. He must have figured he was scammed by then and it was a CYA move.
And whats even worse, they vote and they can ruin a whole country with that vote.
I know, isn't that scary? Everyone better get a shortwave radio receiver, make sure it can receive ssb, if you want to get anything other than state run news. Myself, I have that all covered.
I think we will need to figure out ways to communicate or this movement will die. Remember the old dial up bbs, we may have to resort to something like that if we do not have internet access. Just a thought.
An idiot?= maybe.
A giant embarrassment to all Kansans everywhere = most certainly. Not like we didn't have enough on our shoulders with the whole Dorothy thing.
This is such an idiotic remark I suspect it was written by some well-meaning conservative, trying to make liberals look bad.
You didn't have to try so hard, son.
They'll take care od my grandmother, mom, or dad, brother, sister.. over my dead body! These are some crooked damn people!
And for you guys who voted to put the Democrats back into Power. This kind of crap is why they were voted out of power 20 something years ago! You younger voters.. you need to do some history research before voting in elections. Democrats are the same today as they were 50 yrs ago.. as are Republicans. They don't change their agenda's just because they change members every 4 or 2 yrs. Personally.. I don't think the Dem's are going to give up their power this time. They aren't waiting another 20 yrs to complete shoving their agenda's (which has always been welfare, socialism, & every-time they get power. illegal aliens get amnesty, more services just for being "hispanic, latino, or of hispanic decent" thats where American's (myself including) are fed up. That entire question on Government forms need to go. The Government wants to separate American's.. they started with questions like that on all government forms, & they continue to make, "We the People of One Nation", divide further, & further… thus using the excuse (As Nancy Palosi & some other Dem's just did) saying things like.. "He's a racist", "a bigot", "he doesn't like me because I'm PURPLE, or from Africa." Nancy Palosi, & her Puppets, calls me, & everyone else who isn't for Obama's Health Care Reform Bill, a Racist." Ms Palosi, & people trying to shove that health bill down our throats must believe, " just not possible… American don't trust Barak Obama to do whats best for America!". "It couldn't be because, American's don't care to have a socialist government system, & have government decide whats best for their health instead of their doctors!" NOTE: Democrats say now, that this bill will NOT get between the Patient/ Doctor relationship, & it may very well read that way right now. But once the bill passes, HISTORY tells me, that its gets changed quickly when the government creates bills such as this. The Patriot bill is a great example. It started out with some, not to concerning (from what American's are told). It passed.. & the next thing we know, we're almost in a Police State.. where Enforcement has more powers of citizens then they've ever had. If American's let this happen, its sa done deal, & we're stuck with it, no matter if you like it or not. There's no going back.. at-least until the economy tanks all the way.. which it will..
Mark Twain said in a speech once, ""Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." So true!
I am in the IBEW (electrical workers). Oddly enough, my union has helped me to leave it. Between the working dues deducted from my wages to the tune of 5%, the $78 per quarter membership dues, the $5.35 per hour "health insurance" contribution (that you must pay even when they refuse to insure you), the 18% compulsory wage deduction for a retirement plan that consistently loses money, and a half dozen other "contributions, the IBEW has succeeded in bankrupting my business. I am what they call an owner/operator. This means that I have all the risk of owning and running my business plus I must maintain active union membership in order to work with my tools in my business. Well, they have achieved what they wanted to achieve. I will be a union member until I get out of the business…which should be in the next three to four months. When my business closes, I will withdraw from the union. They will retain control of my retirement, by law, for a period of two years. In that time, I expect them to manage to fritter it completely away. So be it. I count it a small price to pay in exchange for the opportunity to make a living wage free from coercion and extortion. It seems a fair price to pay to be able to keep my house and feed my family.
Anyone who is considering joining a union, reconsider. After they take their cut, you won't make any better money than you would working non-union. What's more, you are more likely to actually be working if you are non-union instead of out of work "on the book."
You just described how Obama is going to "change" America, comrade.
Really interesting and well written article.
