House Conservatives Break With GOP Leaders in Fight Against ObamaCare
by Bill HennessyRepublican leadership, at all levels, should have learned a quick lesson about the mood of America’s conservatives from the Dede Scozzafava debacle in upper New York state. Unfortunately, the GOP House Leadership might need some remedial instruction. And a group of conservative Republican lawmakers met Tuesday to draft that lesson plan.
Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has been one of the more vocal opponents of ObamaCare. Last week on Sean Hannity’s television program, Ms. Bachmann announced the “House Call on Congress.” She urged Americans to come to Washington, DC, to a press conference on the Capitol steps at Noon on Thursday, November 5. After the presser, Ms. Bachmann will lead the citizens through House office buildings to confront Democrats on their own turf. She hopes to draw thousands to DC to tell the Democrats to their faces, “We don’t want a government takeover of our healthcare.” Yesterday, Ms. Bachmann announced that conservative talk radio host Mark Levin would join her.
Leaders, though, tend to be cautious. Before the Hill brass swooped in to “help” organizers by providing speaker lists and talking points, a band of conservatives formed a steering committee to keep the message and the tactics authentically conservative. These rebels don’t want talking points; they want a battle cry.
Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) hosted the meeting of a dozen Hill conservatives who’ve had enough. The meeting was to help Michele Bachmann, and other originators of the House Call protest, retain control of the event and the message.
Until now, Mr. Akin and a few others in this Gang of 12 preferred keeping a low profile. Emboldened by the grass roots effect in New York’s 23rd Congressional District race, Akin is determined to go on offensive for conservative principles rather than just fending off Democrat advances. Last week, for example, Akin recruited eight House Republicans to endorse Conservative Party candidate, Doug Hoffman, in the NY-23 race, even while the National Republican Congressional Committee was pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars to boost Scozzafava.
Tuesday’s meeting included Rep. Steve King (R-IA), Ms. Bachmann, Doctors Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey (Rs-GA), Dr. Michael Burgess (R-TX), and others who are willing to take on their own party’s heirarchy. According to Mr. Akin, “This steering committee is full of risk takers who’ve been pushed out of their comfort zone” and are willing to fight for principle. Akin cited an emerging “sense of camaraderie among conservatives” in the House.
The citizens who’ve manned the barricades against ObamaCare in town halls, tea parties, and rallies will welcome help from the Hill. Republican victories in Tuesday’s elections combined with the now palpable influence of the Tea Parties, could allow Akin, Bachmann, King and crew to put the Democrats on defense while keeping the GOP tacking right. Blue Dog Democrats are already warning that a good showing by GOP candidates in yesterday’s elections could limit their support for liberal initiatives, including Cap and Trade and healthcare takeover. If popular dissent, determined House conservatives, and jittery Blue Dogs delay a vote on PelosiCare until January, election year risk aversion could bury the ideas altogether.
That scenario would be a disaster for Barack Obama’s faltering agenda and a victory for the republic. It could also give the GOP a band of solid conservative leaders it so desperately needs.

It seems the goal is to confront the Democratic leadership but maybe the GOP leadership needs to be confronted, or removed first. Their feigned opposition is reminiscent of the opposition to TARP that caved once enough perks were added for GOP districts. When the time comes, I wouldn't bet my house that Boehner and Blunt wouldn't sign on to the bill.

I have my reservations about Michelle Bachman. She get's too many "False" & "Pants On Fire" ratings from Politifact.com Doesn't look good for us conservatives when she makes statements that she can't back up with facts. Nice looking lady though. I support her conservative stance on the healthcare issue, and do NOT want this country careening down the Socialist path. The conservatives need to take over Republican party and get it back on track. She just needs to avoid "open mouth, insert other foot".
I think more people than ever are waking up to the fact that government has already changed our lives for the
worst over the years, that we need to get back to what made this country great, an that was the people, not

I am fed-up-to-the-back-teeth with the House leadership. That they would have the nerve to insinuate themselves into this says everything you need to know about them. The House leadership is thoroughly uninspiring, not because they aren't charismatic (good!), but because they speak in vagaries, with diffidence, with imprecision; always trying to speak in code so as not to offend. These people never fail to miss an opportinity to attack the progressive premise, and to explain their own hierarchy of values and why. The House leadership is part of the problem, not the solution.
I truly believe that Obama wants to bankrupt America which will take away any and all power Americans have. This will pave the way for a "world Power" owned and controlled by the ultra rich. We as Americans have to stop it now!
I hope that the folks who "visit" their representative will not limit themselves to the Democrats, but will visit ALL representatives to impress on them that we're not happy with almost all of them!

This is the problem. Dems can't get the message because they don't care. The bigger issue is, did the Republicans get the message? I doubt it considering their response on every other issue.____Just because a politician has an R behind their name doesn't make them a conservative. Case in point is Scozzafava, she was more liberal than the Democrat. The leadership of the Republican party wants a bigger tent and they don't care how that tent is formed. I'm almost ready to reregister as an independent because both major parties are lying hypocrites.

I have no reservations about Michelle Bachman. In every interview I've seen of her and a couple of floor speeches she has been consistently conservative and principled. She is clear evolving as a congresswoman and is helping frame opposition to the libtard-radical agenda in the house.
Could you be more specific about facts she has spouted without supporting facts? Because I haven't seen it and I've never heard of polifact.com . Not that they're not legit, but I'd have to know more about them before I'd form an opinion on someone by their critique alone.

Politifact is bogus. it's not a far-Left site, but it leans that way. They once gave Glen Beck a "Liar" rating for saying Van Jones is an avowed Communist because Beck was quoting something that was years old. The only problem is, Jones never publicly stated he had renounced it, so how did they "prove" he wasn't a Communist any more? If there's a situation that is questionable, they will always lean Left with their analysis. They keep it fairly neutral, but my guess is that's because they don't want to be unmasked as a Liberal group.
This is the way people should start a movement. Make a stand on principle and see who stands behind you. I'm nervous about politicians and people with a financial stake jumping in front of the Tea Party movement (at least until they can get everything they want out of it). I'd rather people stood up for what they believed in and saw the reaction. My guess is that outside of the extreme ideologues, most people would respect someone for being honest, even if they weren't in complete agreement.
Then again, they're politicians so the one thing they can always be counted on for doing is whatever is in their best interests.

See below for link to the Michelle Bachman statements at Politifact.com You have to read through them and check the fact links they provide. I may not always agree with their findings, but some of that is biased on my part being a conservative. I just like to have as many facts available as possible before making a judgement. They spank Dems/Libs also, including BHO, Pelosi, Biden, etc. They probably spank the Repubs more though.

But I have seen Politifact misreport things. They are the main go-to guys of MSNBC when they want to attack the Republicans. I know checking facts is a pain, but you might want to give it a shot some time.

There are parts of the Patriot Act I agree with, and others I don't.
There's no such thing as warrantless wiretapping, only warrant-after-the-fact wiretapping. (Which is as good as before-the-fact, since the judge is allowed to rule against the warrant and reject whatever is on the tape.)
The invasion of Iraq was not unconstitutional, since Congress gave that power to the President. If you believe Congress abdicating its authority (which it did; let's face it, Congress just didn't want the blame if things went wrong), you should also be in favor of ending the Federal Reserve, which is the worst abdication of constitutional authority the country has ever seen. (It used to be that recessions cost congressmen their jobs; no longer, sadly.) My point here is that you can't have it both ways. If you feel the Federal Reserve is constitutional, then so is the Iraq war.

I am concerned that too much is being read into yesterday's results. Even Rush is missing it.
What happened yesterday — across the country — was a rejection of government and political insiders. Sadly, what cost Hoffman NY-23 wasn't Scozzafava or her turncoat endorsement of the Democrat, but instead a rejection by NY-23 residents of outside interference in their district. (This is clearly proven by the fact that Owens' margin of victory in every county (except the two that trend heavily GOP/Dem) is essentially the same as his overall margin of victory.)
A Republican took out a long-time Dem incumbent in Westchester County NY by SIXTEEN points. a Republican beat off an incumbent Dem governor in BLUE NJ by 4-5 points, which might have been TEN if it weren't for the independent running, or, put another way, the incumbent drew 10% points less than his challengers.
This is repeated across the country in mayoral races, city councils, school boards and townships. People dont TRUST politicians, political operatives, political parties, or anyone else connected with politics!
(And liberals, you should be SUPPORTING this, because your own party has the same problem; it's not listening to its members!)

I'm with you on the abomination called the Federal Reserve. It is unconstitutional, as was the Iraq invasion. Fact is, Congress did not declare war. And there were most definitely warrantless wiretaps, where no judicial oversight was practiced before or after. I have no problem with after-the-fact oversight. I have a big problem with no oversight.

I think one of the central questions of the moment is whether the GOP can be the home of Americas conservative constituency. There is a lot of distrust after eight years of spending like drunken sailors (apologies to drunken sailors who manage their affairs much better than the GOP). Congress abdicated its authority by giving the President the authority to go to war. I'm not arguing with you, but Congress was equally to blame (more specifically, the members of Congress, R and D, who voted for that authority).
Glad to see we have agreement on the Fed. I *highly* recommend Ron Paul's book 'End the Fed' which explores the multitude of reasons the Fed was created, including all the ones no one talks about.

That still leaves Owens with 49-50% of the vote, assuming all of Scozzafava's votes would have gone to Owens, which in that district shouldn't have happened. The county vote proportions are too uniform for a typical political result, so there's obviously another factor.
My supposition fits with what was seen across the country, but NY-23 could just have been the result of a horrible mess.

Republicans have been divided since WWII between the so-called moderates and the grassroots conservatives. The GOP has always been a "centrist" party, following the line from Hamilton, Clay, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt while the 19th century Democrats held the title of libertarians and conservatives, as cited in THE CHANGING FACE OF DEMOCRATS on Amazon and http://www.claysamerica.com. 20th century Democrats are the ones who switched to the path of Rousseau and Marx and now, the only opposition will come from the grassroots Republicans if they can come up through the choking maneuvers of GOP leadership.

There have been several premature announcements of an AARP Obamacare endorsement over the past several months, but now it’s just about official.
I heard from a source a few days ago that the endorsement was imminent and that it will be published by AARP tomorrow. The Associated Press also says its sources are telling the wire service the same thing.
I’ve been told that the endorsement will argue that senior citizens will actually benefit from the government health care takeover despite a half-trillion-dollars in cuts to Medicare and Medicaid because of the House version’s subsidies for medium-income seniors; elimination of the so-called “donut hole” coverage gap; and anticipated reductions in the cost of medications. The AARP will argue to its members that the massive costs of the public option will not increase the deficit.
[Insert laugh track here.]
There will be no mention in the endorsement of the AARP’s own vested financial interests in Obamacare. And there will certainly be no mention of the membership revolt that AARP’s alliances with the Left have caused.
Good time for a flashback to the Dallas health care forum in August, when an AARP member confronted one of its leaders with one of the questions of the year:
“Do you work for us or do we work for you?”

I admire her honesty and willingness to 'stand-it-alone' for the principles of our Republic! And, it blew me away when I heard her say: We're not a 'democracy, we're a Constitutional Republic!" I LOVE HER FOR THAT! That screamed United States Constitution, baby!
So, "Drill, baby, drill" and "It's the Constitution, baby!"
