Pollster Says ‘Throw the Bums Out’ Sentiment Brewing for 2010
by Bob Gough
Two-thirds of registered voters who responded to a recent survey say the federal stimulus packages has not resulted in the improvement of the Western Illinois economy
The poll, commissioned by QuincyNews.org, was conducted by We Ask America on November 22 between 4:30 PM – 6:30. In all, 15,000 random residential phone numbers of registered voters in the 17th Congressional District were dialed, resulting in 1,278 people taking the poll. The numbers dialed were randomly selected.
The results have a margin of error of ± 2.74 %.
Of those who responded, 66.7 % say the stimulus package hasn’t improved the economy. Just under 22 percent said there had been an improvement while 11.5 percent were not sure.
The poll also showed a skepticism toward health care reform and also a dissatisfaction with the incumbent 17th District congressman, Democrat Phil Hare of Rock Island.
Pollster Gregg Durham said the data tells him a ‘throw the bums out’ mentality is emerging for 2010.
“This is happening in the rest of the country,” Durham said. “It’s a little stronger in Illinois…this dissatisfaction with politicians with one governor in prison and the last one impeached and in legal trouble. The meter is being pegged in this state.”
“What is very telling is the independents are very strongly against the incumbent. There is a tendency to look for something else. There is a dissatisfaction with an incumbent.
“While even the democrats said they really don’t see the impact of stimulus spending, the real surprise is that the independents broke most closely to the Republican view points,” said Gregg Durham, who conducted the poll.”There’s some programs that we call eyerollers. Health care reform is one of them.”
“The pendulum swings both ways. When you combine the major economic woes, plus the emotionally charged programs that are being discussed…health care, cap and trade, card check…there is a hastening of that pendulum swing and party affiliation doesn’t matter. “
Durham said the frustration is mounting.
“People are becoming weary,” he said. “They are holding their hands up and asking how we’re going to pay for this, couple that with a bad economy and not enough jobs you have the potential for a quantum shift. “

It is a shame, that WE must wait until 2010 to throw the bums out. Patience is a virtue though, and given another year, the Country, the economy, health care, cap and trade and many other aspects that affect our daily lives will be in such a shambles, that people who remember the illustrious Jimmah Carter, will welcome him back.
Barrack Hussein Obama, Madame Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Chris Dodd, Bawney Fwank and the rest of the Clown Possee are the best thing WE have going for US. It is guaranteed 100% they will do nothing but screw up consistently, and with regularity……………
It will take generations to fix what this Congress and 'Bama has done to the country in less than a year.

I am all for throwing the bums out. I would just like to park a foot up their A@@ as they're leaving.
Watching the futility and ineptness of the leadership of this great country reminds me of the humorous one-liner that the great football coach John McKay said when asked about "the execution of his football team", he replied "I'm all for it".
Remember the good old days, when the parties fought and no legislation got passed? I'll take gridlock any day over the garbage this administration is trying to push through.
I think a whole lot of politicians are going to be crying about losing their power when all is said and done. People on both sides have had enough of the ineptness and drunken spending that is going on.
Too true. The thing that really bothers me is that we ALL are going to get badly hurt in the learning process of the complacents and libetards as they realize this field they're planting isn't flowers, its thorns and cactus with knife sized thorns.
It'll take a Prez and Congress set to appeal this crap rather than create more.
Actually, they're only loyal to padding their OWN pockets.
They'll just become lobbyists and wield power behind the scenes–immune to elections, invisible to oversight, unburdened from accountability…
I agree with everyone that it will be a welcome sight to see new bodies elected.
Difficulties I see with turning things around…
1- Two Party System: Unless you're a Dem or Rep it's severly difficult to get on a ballot, much less a national one. So we're going to be stuck with a bunch of Republicants.
2- Ending up with Republicants in office: Once in office there's a HIGH risk they forget the reason they're there and resort back to their pre-Obama stupidity.
3- Dictatorship: Obama creates such a mess and puts SO many of his Social thugs and Union thugs in place that we can't get rid of him.
4- Sabotage: NObama will have sabotaged the ship so badly that it will be near impossible to turn the ship around unless we have a TOTAL reboot of the system… such as starting over…
Take a page out of the liberal playbook, and vote regular, and often!
Touche'
17th District Tea Party folks – have you decided to endorse a primary candidate yet? If so, please report it so that it can be shared – and others can help you to back a better alternative than the incumbent. Otherwise, we'll keep getting a Hobson's choice in November (lesser of evils), since we know specious candidates can win primaries by simply being better organized or by sheer dumb luck. We need to find and support better ones.

I found this bit of good news as well…as long as people don't get complacent by the time the elections get here, this bodes well for republicans.

Had to laugh at the horrible advice he gives at the end…I think most Americans are already tired of watching liberals in action, all those behind locked door bills and policy decisions.
Benen's advice for Democrats in trouble?
"Finish health care," he writes. "Pass a jobs bill. Finish the climate bill. Re-regulate the financial industry. Finish the education bill. Pick up immigration reform. Repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'"
While I share the sentiment, it won't happen… The general electorate is so uninformed and cluless as to who is actually responsible for the fiaco we are in that they will either not vote or vote for the incumbants.
Most people only pay attention around election time or not at all. Regardless of how bad things get they usually think "thier guy" is ok, and it's the "other guy" that's the problem. So we continually get the California's, New York's, the Illinois, and on and on to drag the rest of us off the cliff.
Just consider how long McCain, Murtha, Boxer, Pelosi, Ried, Dodd, Schumer, Frank, et al have been up there destroying the country if you have any doubt about it. Unfortunately, short of an armed revolt and a very public hanging on the capital mall these thieves and criminals will remain there forever.
""Finish health care," he writes. "Pass a jobs bill. Finish the climate bill. Re-regulate the financial industry. Finish the education bill. Pick up immigration reform. Repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'""
…pack bags, empty desk, book one-way flight home.
toss out the garbage!
"So we're going to be stuck with a bunch of Republicants."
Republicans with new faces. I'll take that anyday over this disaster. You really think splitting non-Obama/Dem voters in half with independents on every ticket added to the mix won't keep the Dems in power for generations? It sure will by the numbers. Does Perot ring a bell with you?
Hey, those Republicans in congress and the senate now holding the line as best they can against this socialist onslaught deserve some credit.
Conservatives and libertarians, whether they are Republicans or Independents, really need a short, positive program to run on in 2010. We need to make this a national election. We need to run and win as Republicans in Blue Dog districts, and as Independent conservatives in rural and suburban, Midwest through Northeast districts where Republicans have not had success. Taking the House from Pelosi in 2010 is more important than taking the WH in 2012. http://bit.ly/1nF92O
Everyone says to throw the bums out, but somehow the bums remain in office. The rules are not fair.
ok. It's true. I will give themsome credit. They have been locked out of rooms, overlooked and overwhelmed by Democraps. But the 2 party system is part of the problem. Not enough competition…
motion view is correct, except for one omission…money. In IL-17 at least, the incumbent has access to unlimited funds from Big Labor. Other incumbents in other districts no doubt enjoy the same advantage. Help Schilling throw the fat ass IL-17 bum out here, https://www.bobby2010.com/donate/
The two party system wasn't a problem for 200+ years in this country. Your premise is incorrect. It has worked well and efficiently, that's what mid-term elections correct, they balance excesses.
A third party system works to the benefit of the Democrats. You want that?
You don't seem to know or understand American history.
At the end of the day it will be business as usual and corrruption will reign supreme as always. Only when the regular joes and joans fill the seats in washington will things turn around.
Not if Sarah Palin is in the White House!!
Sweet!
Illinois 17 is one of the Fire Fifty districts and Bobby Shilling is definitely the kind of leader we would like to see running and winning in 2010. For those of you not familiar with the district, take a look at the map here at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:IL17_109.gif . Now that is some gerrymandering! And even with all of that ridiculous district massaging, the district only leans Democrat by +3. This is a rural/ suburban district, how did this Democrat get elected? "Democratic incumbent Phil Hare , who has held the seat since January 2007, ran unopposed" . We can't win if we're not in.
Who would be elected in their place, Hannah Montana? Then, would they believe the same as Obama, who said: the interests of community are more important than are the interests of the individual? He promised change. Change must then mean to abandon individual freedom. Trying to label his ideas may lead to left, right, middle, socialist, communist, fascist, monarchist or other ideas that turn you on, but in reality, there are only two different political forms. The oldest is where the few elite rule the many, part of all those labels. The newest is where the many rule themselves, guided by a moral consensus and written law, i.e., individual freedom. Conservatives and libertarians say the interests of individuals are more important than are those of the community. They believe when individuals prosper, their families and communities prosper and government works best staying out of their way. Modern Democrats believe community interests are most important. They claim they can better define and govern community interests. They expand the role of government to serve those interests and as a few elite, will rule the many. Which is right? Claysamerica.com
You're right, onecent. That Republican majority that Bush II had really helped us, didn't it?
If I read you correctly, you want Reps who are afraid of looking mean? Who won't veto crappy legislature? Who purposely ignore conservatives? Who extend their hand across the aisle in the name of bipartisanship?
I wouldn't vote for a permanent ruling class, but that's what you are advocating.
I know enough of American History to know that when either party has a majority it's bad news for us. It doesn't mean that all Dems and all Reps are bad. But for years they became almost identical and said whatever got them votes i.un an election, now the Republicans are finally taking a different stand because they smell a shift in public sentiment… not that its a bad thing.
The power-drunk Dems face a bloodbath next year, with some already talking about a 100 seat loss.
And by 2012?
People will >wince< at the very mention of the name "Obama"…
and the GOP could win 40 states running Gilbert Gottfried, LOL

Speaking for myself, 2010 will be the first time I have voted since Jimmy Carter. And believe me, I will have done my research and will take my time. Throw the bums out!
I see very little turnover in the houses of Congress in 2010. The American people have this awful habit of saying "throw the bums out", when what they mean is "through the other bums out, my bum, er, congressman is just fine, thanks very much".
More of the same is coming, people. Sorry, but there it is.
We should throw them all out. Their loyalty is to party, not to country.

I voted for Obama last time and am kicking myself every day! It won't happen again. The other thieves like Murtha, Frank, Dodd, Rangel and Reid need to be voted out.
I don't think so. Not this time. For one, many of the voters threw out bums in 2006 and 2008. Now they see they just replaced them with different bums. So we'll do it again, and again, and again, until we get bums who freakin' listen to us.
I think you'll see this build up, and up, and up, until there is political bloodshed next November.
[...] they may lie, they might think twice. The dust can settle quite far. After all, its a growing THROW THE BUMS OUT movement out there, and pretending like they aren’t hypocrites all around just won’t [...]
And as long as Gilbert actually freakin' listens to us, he'll get our votes…
One can but hope…
I would give anything to bitch slap the POS, Frank, Reid, Dodd, Schumer and every corrupt member of Congress except Pelosi…. She I would handle "differently"…. NEXT !
Well, that's something I've never tried in the voting booth: Just vote against every incumbent. If everyone did that in every election…
You're wrong!
People are angry and many have woken up.
The worse things get, and they WILL continue to get worse, the angrier people get, which makes them turn out to vote..
Sadly, it will take longer than that and some of the things Obama and the Dems have done, can't be undone.
The Founding Fathers set up the two party system after discovering that sort of having no parties didn't work.
They were adamantly a many party/Parliamentary System and you should get down on your knees, every day, and thank GOD for their wisdom .
I think I could take Pelosi!
I posted this some time back. it really does say a LOT about OUR voting practice and turnout. One Hell of a lot more than 20 or 25% need to turn out to vote.
http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/racial-lines-defi...
“In 2001, when Shirley Franklin first ran for mayor, 41 percent of registered voters cast ballots. Tuesday, only about 24 percent of registered voters showed up.”
“At the polling station of the Central United Methodist Church on Mitchell Street on the West Side, only 4.63 percent of registered voters cast a ballot.”
I find it amazing (NOT) that only 4.63 to 24 percent of voters turned out.
In the larger picture, the 76% to 95.37% are the voices that whine the most, wanting more government handouts and control in their lives.
If my memory serves me right, didn’t Iraq have a recent voter turnout at nearly 100%? This leads me to believe that a dictatorship and oppression, then freedom will drive the people to the ballot box.
Hmmmm… we were there about 230 years ago!
With a majority vote only then can “we the people” put a stop to this.
If YOU don’t vote YOU don’t have a voice.
Find the solution at http://www.firecongress.org.
How does the saying go…………"A trip of a thousand miles begins with the first step". Go to http://www.firecongress.org and help get the ball rolling.
Rasmussen is now reporting that the number of voters who want their own Congressman re-elected is now the same as those that want him thrown out. I don't think I have ever seen that before…
This is incorrect; the founding fathers (FF) were actually dead set against having large parties. Hamilton called them "factions" in the federalist papers. And here's an interesting quote from John Adams, another FF:
"There is nothing I dread so much as a division of the Republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader and converting measures in opposition to each other."
The FFs premise of divided powers with checks balance was designed to insure no one faction or set of factions could completely take over all government powers, as was the case in England at the time.
Though the 2 party system has meant stability, predictability, that's not the only criteria to measure the success of a political system. Particularly in a democracy, the priority criterion is how well the party system reflects the diverse interests of a nation, and in that respect, I think the 2 party system continues to fail in this regard. Both parties are now driven by the extremes, hiking up rhetoric in a way that makes governing nearly impossible. The cycle needs to be broken.
There is a way out; it's a growing, non-partisan movement to clean the slate and start over, with the US House of Representatives as the primary target. It’s called Get Out of Our House! (GOOOH, pronounced, “go”). Visit the website (http://www.goooh.com) to learn more; the website does a much better job explaining the idea than I could.

The real problem is that there are many people on registry rolls who have either moved or are dead and never removed. During "big" elections ( gubernatorial and presidential ) these are used FRAUDULENTLY. Then there is the other problem……………………..vast swaths of the electorate are ignorant as well as being stupid and it's wonderful when these folks don't vote!
Some people just get fed up and stay home, which is dreadful; others just can't be bothered to vote in election years that aren't presidential, ones.
Except for last year, which as we all know was an overhyped one, due to skin color, many voted for all the wrong reasons, without any knowledge, and "to be part of history". The young never turn out in any numbers, but they did last year. That won't happen again; thankfully and I do believe that the age to vote should be raised !
Of course people vote in big numbers when they first get the chance to vote; it's new and exciting. After a while, the interest wanes and yes, that is very wrong. We are a REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC and without the populace's participation ( even with it, sometimes ) we all get what we don't want. The FF's believed that the general populace was far too stupid to chose a good president, which is partly why the Electoral College was set up; which they did believe would more often than not would end in a tie, with the members of the House picking the president and the Senate picking the VEEP.
That was PRIOR to them discovering that what you are proposing as "the answer" was completely stupid and unworkable!
There were no deliniated parties, as such, in our beginning. After Washington, bunches of people tran for the presidency and the one who garnered the most votes was declared the president, with the one with the second highest votes became the VEEP.
THAT DID NOT WORK OUT WELL AT ALL; ESPECIALLY FOR THOMAS JEFFERSON !
You are extremely naive.
Kasteer; There is an answer to the problems you raise. It is GOOOH. Check out http://www.goooh.com.
