Small Town, Big Government
by Bob Gough[ED: Big Government isn't just in Washington, DC. In this story, local Republicans and Democrats tag-team to put out of business a local charity providing safe rides home from local bars. Often, the fight against Big Government begins at home. This installment comes from the editor of the great local news site, Quincy News.Org]
Jonathon Schonekase can’t seem to escape his past.
He changed his name hoping people would forget about his setting fire to an abandoned school when he was a juvenile. He then went to prison as an adult, where he lost his eye in a fight.

Jonathon said the loss of a friend in a drunk driving accident gave him the idea to start a service where, maybe, he could give people an option to avoid drinking and driving.
Jonathon started “Courtesy Rides” on New Year’s 2008. He posted his number in bars, people called him and he picked them up. Didn’t cost them a thing. If they wanted to leave a tip, so be it.
Now more than a year and a half after starting the service, the town where he started it has decided Jonathon needs to be regulated.
The City Council of Quincy, Illinois (pop. 40,000 and change) passed an ordinance by an 8-5 vote to tweak the taxicab ordinance in the city code to classify his volunteer service as a “for hire” business if he accepts donations.
Jonathon became a victim of his own success. He did stray from the original mission of picking up people from bars when he gave rides to other places, including the Quincy Airport and when he added more vehicles and volunteer drivers. This drew the attention of the local cab company and shuttle services.
All of the charity he provided is now government regulated.
The simple answer should be for Jonathon to apply to become a taxi. But the city taxi licensing process has a “good citizen” provision and his conviction probably stands in the way.
But the irony is Quincy’s Mayor, John Spring, has talked publicly about the perils of drinking and driving. During his latest mayoral campaign, he even offered to pick up some young adults from the bars if they needed him.
This group of young professionals, YP Quincy, made the lack of local late night cab service in Quincy a cause celeb for a moment. This group, which has been lauded by local bureaucrats and the mainstream media for its formation, was absent during the “Courtesy Rides” debate, which lasted for about a month.
But a man who was making a difference, a man who was keeping hundreds of drunks out from behind the wheel each weekend, was told red tape was more important than saving lives.
A newly-elected alderman, Republican Dan Brink, was decided to take up this issue and ask the city’s legal and police department to consider amending the city’s code. Brink, who previously worked as a probation officer, was uncomfortable with Jonathon’s past, although he said the main reason he was doing this was to determine if he was a business.
Jonathon started “Courtesy Rides” because the cab company wouldn’t run pick up anyone after 1 a.m., which is when the taverns close, and people who went to the late night clubs were certainly out of luck as they are open for another two hours on weekends.
City Attorney Tony Cameron said when “Courtesy Rides” was one man and one car, it was his opinion in February it wasn’t a ‘for hire’ business. But Cameron also said that with more advertising and adding a van and a bus, “Courtesy Rides” comes “perilously close to a smell test as for hire.”
Quincy Police Chief Rob Copley also said the addition of more vehicles and making shuttle runs besides those late-hour bar calls changed things.
“I don’t think we’d be standing here if (Schoenakase’s) mission hadn’t changed,” Copley said.
But his ingenuity, his providing a service to those in need, was met with resistance. A Democratic alderman, Steve Duesterhaus, said “Courtesy Rides” needed to be regulated for “public safety” reasons with the licensing of his vehicles and background checks for volunteer drivers. The irony is, the regulation of this enterprise causes an even greater harm.
Did the city ask the lone cab company or the other shuttle services which it licenses to step up? Were they told to stay open to handle the weekend rush of people leaving the bars and instead of fumbling for their keys they fumble for their cell phones and call someone for a ride? No. Not a word.
The Quincy Police Department even conducted stings against “Courtesy Rides” to make sure he was indeed a voluntary service. QPD didn’t find any time where Jonathon or one of his volunteers asked for payment.
The need to regulate outweighing the city’s public safety. Bureaucracy in action.
Now some local conspiracy theorists will say that is because the city likes the revenues it gets from DUI’s. Copley takes great offense to this theory. He says he doesn’t want “drunks” on the streets.
Another disturbing result of this action is that the law now casts a wide net over other enterprises, including some courier services. What is disturbing is city officials say they will not go after them. They will only go after the “renegade cab companies”. Spot zoning for law enforcement.
Jonathon and his young attorney, Ryan Schnack, plowed into the bureaucracy head-on. The new ordinance proposed by the city’s attorney, Andrew Staff, took an overbroad stance on the legal term “consideration”. They claim that Jonathon’s service will now fall under their definition of “for hire” and thusly after the vote be enforceable to fines of an ordinance violation or attempt to prove his “good character” and become a taxi service and regulated under the City and State’s Taxi statutes.
On September 21st , during the ordinance’s second reading, the agenda heated up to force the vote on Jonathon’s fate. During this debate, the City hung its hat on the newly defined and refined city ordinance and ignored impassioned pleas to allow Jonathon to continue to operate.
One woman, Amy Zornes, lost her teenage daughter in a double-fatal alcohol-related crash just outside Quincy in April. She spoke from the heart about how she wished her daughter had called Jonathon.
“Nobody wants to be in my position,” Zornes said. “But kids won’t call their parents because they don’t want to get in trouble. They can call Jonathon.”
When Zornes finished her impassioned plea before the City Council, complete with blown up pictures of her daughter’s crash scene, she was publicly brushed off by the mayor.
“You really didn’t address the ordinance change,” was all Mayor Spring said.
The lead of the local Mothers Against Drunk Drivers chapter then said she wished every town had a “Courtesy Rides”. She wasn’t treated quite as rudely. Maybe because she was in a wheelchair.
The young attorney was asked by the City Council to provide documentation of conversations he had with various state agencies who Schnack claimed had told him they didn’t see a problem with “Courtesy Rides”. But the state agencies wouldn’t provide Schnack with any documentation, probably because no bureaucrat in Springfield wanted to stick their neck out for this.
Schnack asked Staff, the city’s attorney, to join in on a conference call with one of the state agencies to discuss the matter and Staff told Schnack he “didn’t have time to mess with” the matter.
Jonathon also didn’t provide documentation of proper insurance to the City Council. He said he went through GEICO and didn’t have a local agent who could appear with him at the Council meeting. I guess the gecko or the cavemen wouldn’t do.
So Quincy, Illinois has an ordinance changed that could put more drunk drivers on the street and expands the tentacles of government. This ordinance is now so broad that a person who takes money for carpooling kids to school on a regular basis could be breaking the law.
One of Quincy’s quirky qualities is that “Main Street” is spelled “Maine Street” as several streets in the center of town bear the names of states. Quincy’s city hall is located on Maine Street and while the street name is unique, what is happening in its city hall is all too common.
A man finds a niche. He provides a service. He is succeeding. He has come a long way from prison and his past.
Or so he thought.
The big government crowd will tell you this is a case where regulation is needed. But this is a classic example of government overreach. It’s the nanny state in full effect.
If a Quincyan doesn’t think Jonathon is safe, if they don’t like his record or his ride, they don’t have to call him.
But now it doesn’t look like they’ll have that option. Let’s hope they have someone else’s number handy.
The mayor’s office is 217-228-4545. After all, he offered.

Quincy like many cities operate under the theory; "No good deed will go unpunished".
Damn government at all levels! Only government is allowed to save us. If some guy wants to do good for others…"Oh, no! We must stop him. Only our government, at some level can save us!"
Government isn't the solution, government is the problem.
Post the mayors number in all the bars for rides. That should get his attention.
Town like that, home phone numbers might not be too hard to find. Mayor, City Attorney, all City Councilmen who voted for the measure.
What a great town Quincy is, best inventory of beautiful homes in the Midwest. Too bad it has politicians like any other. While they were lucky enough to get in office, they quickly abuse that by grabbing everything that looks like power or an opportunity to make a decision that affects people. By thwarting individual initiative they think they are enhancing their own position, but in fact they are impoverishing their town of it's good people's good thoughts.
If it makes good sense, accept it for what it is.
Yeah for Spring Street ! Best Bar in Quincy.
Think you can't make a difference? Even if you are a working parent, try to use a personal or vacation day and go to school with your kids for the day. Run for an office in your small town, anything to get your foot in the door. Then you can run for county office. Some of these offices are very part time and actually pay something. Learn from the ACORN and other grassroots and use it in a positive way. The town halls this summer and tea parties should be your example that each and every one of us can make a difference.
It's a shame that big government has stretched its evil arms into this man's life and those that used his generous service. While I do agree Mr. Schonekase's mission changed from a one man/one car operation to a broader scope, he doesn't deserve to be singled out because of his past. Something to think about – Would the 24-year-old airport van driver Najibullah Zazi have passed the background check of a “good citizen” provision? Perhaps Mr. Schonekase should have sought out the assistance of ACORN – I'm sure they would have offered advice on how to avoid all types of regulations. Good Luck Mr. Schonekase – You should post the Mayor's phone number in every pub/tavern/bar with a 100 miles radius.
So…? If the local Boy Scouts want to come and help winterize seniors citizens homes or mow their lawns, will they be required to obtain Contractors and landscaping licenses, insurance and bonds? What about "Meals on Wheels" or food deliveries to the homeless on the street?
Instead of sittind around and feeling bad for Jonathon, lets figure out a way to make him and his drivers legal. Certainly there must be a way to oust the current cab company for denying rides after 1:00 am. If Jonathon needs a license, lets get him one. A lot of people contributed to him, helping him fund a new van. Now lets help him start his business. Volunteer our time for his… What can the city about that? Annoying the panel by phone calls isn't going to change their minds, keeping it legal will have to work…afterall, heard of job discrimination?
Had a few beers? Anyone need a ride this weekend? All numbers start with area code 217.

CALL THEM AND LET THEM KNOW!
I got a ride from Jonathon at the 9/12 Quincy Tea Party. He was polite and provided a great service. Don't let them get you down, Jonathon!
I am guessing the taxi service mentioned in the story is the only taxi service in the town. Now, who owns said taxi service? Does that person know any political figures, or did they provide campaign funds for any political figures. Follow the money, folks. Follow the money.
Resist government intrusion at ALL levels.
YES, post home phone numbers of the Mayor and the city council members in all bars, to annoy them, and
YES, get involved in multiple levels of government, to change things from the inside, and
YES, help Jonathon “legalize” his current volunteer work
It isn’t either/or. Use your talents where you see fit. Don’t argue with one another. DO SOMETHING!
great story Bob!! It still brings a tear to my eye to hear about this. No matter what anyone says I am convinced it is because of his past. He is providing a wonderful service to quincy!!! Good for you Jeff! I will never call you Jonathan – sorry!
The funny thing is, in Norman Oklahoma, there is a service provided by the University of Oklahoma called "Safe Ride" very similar to this. They give a ride home from the bars when you have had too much. http://sa.ou.edu/content/view/5/74/
Sounds like the local taxi service cannot handle being in a capitalist system.
Like all the other problems in the world, this is all based on money.
It always stinks when you serve your time and repay your debt to society, then when you get out, you have to run right back out pay another debt that never goes away…unless you are the beneficiary of a cushy expungement, you're permanently damaged.
Doesn't anyone forgive? Do most people just need someone to continuously condemn just to validate their own insecurities? This is EXACTLY why those that have fallen in the past say to hell with everything…why bother? Why should I care about helping anyone? they;re just going to use things like this as a lever to knock me back down. Let's keep the prisons full. Yeah! You'll have a life sentence..even if i wasn't convicted..the arrest is just as demonizing (Arrest – the de facto implication and finding of guilt). People need to learn to truly give a crap..you'd be surprised on how much stress and fear would just plain out go away..
I say that we need to fight for this guy for the simple fact that If he loses, we all lose.
The email I sent to their mayor's email address, mayor@quincyil.gov :
Congratulations on shutting down the Courtesy Rides guy. Citizens like him need to be put in their place. All this talk about drunk driving being "dangerous" is malarkey.
Good for you all! Maybe now you could run those "soup kitchens" out of town. People are basically stupid and need to be regulated by concerned public servants like yourself.
I took the liberty of copying your message and sending it to the mayor. My only modification was: "You, and your henchmen, are despicable."
I hope you do not mind.
In the transportation industry, protecting your franchise is priority one. Both private and public transportation operations can be ruthless when it comes to protecting that. In many locations, private transportation companies usually are required to pay a hefty fee for the ability to operate in an area and they see everything as a threat to their franchise even when it isn't competing with them. Government operations do what government operations do so are just out to hassle since they do that best usually.
While this case started out as one of your typical complaints that transportation companies file on a common basis since the days of horse and wagon, it has become more political. Given that Jonathon Schonekase isn't paying the local government the blood money for a franchise, he became their target. His past is also fanning the flames against his good and needed idea.
This is a prime example of how big government wants to regulate normal, every day charity out of existence. It reminds me of the cap for charitable contributions that Obama put into place. Since the liberals want the government to be all things to all people, they will regulate every good deed or private charity work into oblivion. If people figure out that they can come together as a community and support each other as they stand on their own, we won't need the federal government anymore.
if snyone wants to help jonathan in his fight to stay a free service to those who are or had one too many to drink I was able to obtain his phone number and email address lets all join him in his fight against this little town government

This is another story showing that to really change what is going on, we need to start at the local level. Start with your school board, support candidates that are sane and have good moral values. Your local town and city government is very important, find and support good candidates, again with good morals and belief in OUR Constitution. Then take it to the State level, support and vote for good candidates.
THERE IS MUCH MORE TO THIS STORY! I am a voting republican and resident of Quincy IL. There is more to this story. The individual in question cannot escape his past, mostly because it has established a pattern of seedy behavior. I will fully admit that this individual is providing a service much needed in Quincy. However, he has crossed the line from "Courtesy Rides" to full blow taxi service. He is operating his service with NO LIABILITY INSURANCE for his passengers. Additionally, he is running his bus during the day for road trips and to take residents grocery shopping. As one Quincy resident so appropriately framed the situation: Just because the salvation army operates on donations and provides "courtesy" services, should their kitchen not be regulated by local health codes? Should their housing facilities not be regulated by local fire codes? Jonathan is an excellent entreprenuer and should be commended for recognizing a need in the market place and capitalizing on the opportunity, and also on his keen marketing skills. However, he should do so legally. Not by running his bus on RV plates and carrying no insurance.
That is the number on the side of the bus in the picture. Do you want to clog up his "business" line with calls from well-wishers? Why post out a number at all? Man deserves his privacy, he is not a public official and I see no public permission from him to call with support.
You also posted his email address in the easiest form for address-harvesting spammer software to read. So you know.

Whenever a person writes " I am a voting *insert party name* " , they aren't . I like your Mayor's feelings about that mother's loss to a drunk driver .
I can assure you I am a voting republican. I'll give you my full name, address, and phone number if you'd like to send me an email at smithni_507@hotmail.com. Maybe where you come from people hide behind screen names and live double lives in the blogs, but that's not so in my world.
2009 Quincy isn’t the Old West, Bob. I didn’t know who Jonathan was until today so my opinions weren’t based on what I know of his tragic history. He is trying to do good now. I think it’s simply that Jonathan is uneducated and he didn’t know the current laws. He had a good idea that he thought would be of help to the community, but he needed to comply with issues of safety and liability. No one fined him. The City Council simply told Jonathan that he had to have insurance and to function under a code similar to the taxis do. We all hope that the service Jonathan provides will be continued. What does it say about our community that we need so many vehicles to drive home so many intoxicated people who would willingly drive on our streets after visiting bars? Oh, wait….Quincy is the Wild West.
The nerve of some people – trying to start their own business!!! And without a government handout! Sheesh!!
you are apparently very threatened by courtesy rides. get over it.
no insurance is a police matter not one for the council. this change to the ordinance is a witch hunt and is wrong!
This is an old story. Los Angeles has an expensive light rail system. You would think that an ideal stop in such a system would be the airport, right ? Guess again. The taxi and shuttle companies saw to it that they would not have to compete with a light rail alternative. It's the Golden Rule all over again.
wait, wait, let me ask you all this: if a "Courtesy Rides" driver gets into an accident and someone gets hurt, will they be able to sue the city for negligence (to impose and enforce appropriate checks and regulations)? I mean, before we go blaming the big government (I'm only more than happy to do so where there is a true cause), let's look at ourselves first and take responsibility for our overly zealous litigation habits. Lawyers and nanny-state politicians are like bacteria, they need a fertile ground to flourish. Unfortunately, it is We the People who vote for them and hire them without giving a second thought.
Home Rule Cities in "The Peoples Republic of Illinois" have immunity from such law suits . It is the same that if you get shot and a police officer was not there at the very moment your got shot .
In my community you can call the sheriff for a ride on those 'high alcohol' evenings like prom night or New Years Eve.
Has anyone in Quincy talked about replacing the mayor? In not, that's where they need to start.
Quincy's Mayor just got reelected , I think about a week after the very ugly election run he was and still is wishing he lost
Why would I be threatened by courtesy rides? I have no connection to this matter whatsoever. I don't work in the transportation industry, politics, or anything else. If you're not a resident of Quincy it would be difficult for you to understand this situation. The article called this a "non-profit" Courtesy rides is not incorporated as non-profit organization (nor is it incorporated otherwise). Don't be misled. There is nothing right or good, or charitable, or courtesy about anything this young man does.
The nerve of some people trying to start a business by licensing their business vehicles as RV's, and not carrying insurance to protect their customers! Especially when the proprietor is a convicted felon who's changed his name twice and was involved in the arson of a local school and the breaking of a CRITICAL levee in the great flood of 1993. I say we give him some more chances to cause trouble in Quincy!
OK, Common Sense, maybe Jonathon's lawyer can get many taxpayer's dollars when he sues the city on behalf of a family after a person is killed by a drunk driver (after the shuttle service is stopped). Quincy is just another example of the screwed-up policy makers we have in office from the top down! There is another example of this crap in Texas where a preacher was told to stop feeding the homeless because his sandwiches were not inspected by the health department.
Just who in the hell does the Quincy mayor and council think they serve?
Jonathan should run for the Mayor's job.
I think Kristina is on to something. She got a ride from Jonathan to the 9/12 Quincy Tea Party. In the eyes of the politicians that would make Jonathan and evil teabagger and someone who needs to be eliminated.
This is one of countless overreaches that are making us HATE government and wanting to toss ALL their butts out. Furthermore it is more than obvious that it's not drunk drivers and innocent people being maimed and killed that worries our political officials but loss of all that fine money (tickets, bail, $$ spent on drunk-driving rehab, etc.). For the same reason, cops in my town are enforcing little-known and ridiculous driving laws simply in order to replace dwindling tax revenues.
This guy was doing a very valuable, charitable service. Nanny State says nuh-uh, can't do that! And this, in Quincy, where a huge tea party was held on 9/12 while a lot of the rest of us were marching in D.C. These idiots in government work for US, we do not work for THEM. But we are coming for them.
The biggest threat to our lives, more so than drunks on the road, are the control freaks. And they are everywhere. They won't be happy until everything is either banned or manditory. If, as Bob implies, we can't even stop the control freaks at home, stopping them in the capital is really a stretch.
This is a perfect illustration of the purpose of regulating businesses. It's ALWAYS about limiting competition. To hell with the taxi companies and the politicians they're paying.
So, instead of making it possible for this person to continue in his charity work, the government has changed the rules and put him out of business?
This is capitalism at work? If the problem is obedience to the rules the answer is to get the entity to obey the rules not change them. This is liberalism on steroids. Don’t like the rules, change them.
Integrity, what does that mean? Apparently in Quincy no one in a leadership position has a clue.

What? Are you serious? If you have credible information about the story I just read then let's have it. Providing courtesy rides for no fee IS charitable. Providing rides to people who have drank too much is a RIGHT thing to do. Providing rides to people who otherwise don't have transportation or can't afford a damn taxi is CHARITABLE. He said he has insurance but the Council wouldn't recognize it? I don't understand that part, but if he didn't have insurance, that is an easy fix.
How about some journalism here, guys? You've got that single line in your article about how he "strayed" from his original mission and started giving rides to the airport. I find it hard to believe that people are too drunk to drive home, and going straight from the bar to a freaking flight. So is he expanding his business to sober people? Kind of a big point in whether he should be regulated, no?
Let me get this straight: Some people idolize businesses, the bigger the better. They praise businesses that prey on private citizens and claim that fighting back against, or even objecting to, this thousands-on-one imbalance of power is an abrogation of personal responsibility. They want to criminalize anything that might result in competition with an established business; for example, they attack the creators of free computer operating systems and applications as "unfair" competition for Microsoft because people use the free alternatives instead of buying Windows or Office. Yet when a legitimate business (the taxi company, which is very probably behind this) uses existing laws to counteract an unlicensed and illicit competing business run by a convicted felon, all of a sudden that's wrong?
And while we're at it, there's the matter of his criminal background. If one of the late-night drinkers this fellow takes home gets caught taking a whiz behind a bush while he's waiting for his ride, that bladder-challenged drunk will become a convicted sex offender, barred for life from most jobs, from living in many places, even from contact with his own children. Why should arson and whatever else this ex-con was in for be less of a crime than peeing in public?
Actually, I have no opinion either way about this guy and his free/donation/whatever taxi service. I don't know enough about the situation to have one. But those people who do know, and who are commenting in this thread, need to take a hard look at their own points of view. You can't say "monopolies are good and competition is bad, unless the competitor being squashed by the monopoly is someone I like", and you can't say "someone should never be able to redeem himself after a crime, unless he's someone I like." It's not about who you like, or whether or not Jonathon Schonekase is a wonderful guy. It's about whether companies should be able to use the legal process to hinder competition, and about whether a criminal conviction should be a life sentence. If you think that's just fine, then you shouldn't be supporting Mr. Schoenkase; if you think what's being done to him is wrong, then you need to choose your sides carefully when it's big business versus the little guy, or the whole world versus some ex-con who just wants to move on with his life.
There have been plenty of attempts to shut down soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other charities on the grounds that they attract an "undesirable element" or that they protect lazy and shiftless people from the consequences of their choices. I've heard many times that only a liberal would support giving food and shelter to bums.
Again, it's something to think about. Is charity good? Bad? Only when it's helping people you approve of? Who does Matthew 25:35 apply to?
Yes, I know I'm being a bit of a bomb-thrower here (which is, I should note, a distinctly different creature than a troll). But I'm seeing a lot of inconsistency in outlook, so what I'm throwing in are things that we all really need to examine, to see whether our opinions are based on reason and logic or just on emotion and gut (or knee-jerk) reactions. Nothing is ever as simple as it looks.
Has anyone bothered to ask Jonathon what his intentions are? From the looks of the bus, and from the fact that he has recruited a staff and purchased more vehicles, it appears that he is intending to make this a non-profit business. Which is great, but that is different than a guy doing simple acts of charity at an individual level. He needs to fill out the forms and follow the regulations in place for running a non-profit business if that is what he wants to do. If he wants to just be a guy doing individual acts of charity then he needs to keep it at that level.
In either case, his past conviction is legally a non-issue. If Quincy’s laws make it an issue then they are unconstitutionally discriminatory and can easily be overturned. Quincy’s mayor and civic leaders will be sending the city, and the nation, a message no matter what they do here. I would hope that they would send a positive, progressive message by working *with* Jonathon, rather than sending the message that politics, even at the local level, remains stagnant and mired in the inflexible bureaucratic refusal to see that individuals do matter. One guy does make a difference to all of us.
I like how people think this is a government issue, when this is an obvious corporate issue with influence from the local cab company …
I come from a central Illinois city (Peoria), in fact we used to play Quincy in HS Football. Nearly all my friends who stayed have one or multiple DUI's. It is a cash machine for ineptly run local governments. You can even listen to the DUI lawyers radio commercials late at night on local radio to determine how much of a cottage industry there is busting drunks. The problem is the bureaucrats don't want to lose money that could be better used hiring their incompetent family or might affect their bloated pensions. Term Limits, anyone? That goes double for Congress.

" Jonathon became a victim of his own success. Ok, I call BS too the heartstrings being pulled here. This guy is undercutting exsisting businesses which ARE up to code with the city. The "volunteers" are not getting zero out of this deal which means this whole thing is an attempt to subvert taxes and regulation. The intent at the bars is nice and all but how exactly does charging zero for transportation translate into building a fleet. This isn't good ol' American niceness, but an unbalanced competition masked in the guise of goodwill. Everyone is criticizing the shuttle and cab company for adhering to the laws.
The free shuttle should be properly subsidized by the tavern owners who are getting people wasted( We have a tavern league that gives drunk-ride vouchers to the cab companies on an account) and provide their customers with a safe ride home. The council is correct in their support of the local businesses and the free shuttle is a business and should have the same transport rules. It is a good thing, but get it properly supported financially so it is legal. The airport shuttle is an obvious for profit service, don't paint it as anything else.
Any chance this ride service cuts into their DUI Ticket Revenue?
Yes , DUI's are down 10% since he started
hey “for the cab drivers”: how can you call it undercutting when the local cab company only operates during certain times of the day? gee, i guess if you’re gonna get drunk, make sure you do it and finish up before midnight and pray that they aren’t too busy to pick you up before they stop running for the evening b/c if they’ve got a line of people to pick up, well then it’s just too bad for you. oh, and make sure you don’t overdo it on your embibing b/c that fabulous cab company of ours? yeah, they can and WILL deny their service to ones they deem too intoxicated to take home. our local cab company sucks. period. it always has and likely always will. this isn’t big city livin’ where you can get a cab any time day or night and without prejudice.
AND if i want courtesy rides to give me a ride to the airport and i choose to donate to a cause i believe in, shouldn’t that be my prerogative? i’d rather give my money to a good cause rather than line someone’s pocket. and before you say those donations are lining jonathan’s pocket, i really don’t care if he sees a bit of a profit or not. at least i know that when someone is drunk and broke needs a ride, he’ll give it to them free of charge…won’t get that from the fabulous cab company we’ve got, that’s for sure.
They say that we can't be trusted to govern ourselves. Why then do we trust others who admit they cannot be trusted to govern us.
[...] Small Town, Big Government [...]
The locals should find out Alderman Dan Brink's cel phone number and post it all over town, for those late night pick-ups at the bar after a few to many. lol it would serve the butthead right.
I ran into a similar situation as a cab driver in Santa Maria, Ca. When I started driving, there were 3 cab companies in town. . . soon, only 2. . . then "they" came after us. The city police investigator reported to the city council that we had no insurance – even showing a letter from our insurance company proving otherwise was not proof enough. The investigator said we weren't maintaining our cabs – as a 12-year veteran of the trucking industry, I pulled cabs out of service to go to the shop for every little thing – using the same standards that are used for big trucks. . . our defense was ignored by the city, and they pulled our license.
Which left one cab company – one run by friends of the city council.
While we were fighting to get our license restored – including a petition signed by locals, on the grounds that 1 cab company was insufficient to the city's needs, and in the interest of public safety, we switched to a free service a la Courtesy Rides – as the one cab company left running was completely unable to handle the needs of the city – many times, they would only have 1 cab operating during bar rush.
The city tried to sting me once, by having the owner of the sole remaining cab company call me for a ride – and then a cop pulled me over as I was approaching the designated pick-up spot. I outsmarted them, though. I had my usual log sheet, with signatures of everyone I gave a ride to, certifying that I didn't charge them for my service. So "they" went to the city council to force us not to give drunks rides home after bar closing, and amended the city taxi provisions to prevent us from getting our license back.
Stuff and nonsense. . . that's what this is – a bald-faced power grab at the expense of public safety – just like red light cameras, public safety is not a consideration, only a lie used to further a corrupt agenda.
Quincy Ill always did SUCK.
Everyone seems to be missing the point here. The real issue is the need for a license at all. We don't need the licenses to make it "safer" for people. That's the original racket. It's getting government to preserve the monopoly on driving "for hire." That's the point of government in general because government is also a monopoly. You should all be angry at the existence of the law. And licensing laws are not just in shuttling people around the city. They are everywhere. In most of America, you need a license to cut hair, do nails, etc. That's just revenue for the state. If a business offers bad service, stop using that service. Look for competitors who are more than willing to provide you with better service. Let the market, you and me, dictate who is successful and who goes bankrupt.

If he is genuinely offering his service for no fee, has the required level of chauffeur's license, appropriate insurance, vehicles that pass the safety inspections required, and can afford to continue it without any otherwise illegal activity, there doesnt' seem to be a reasonable argument for interfering with him. However, even if he does have that, and even if he doesn't charge the rider for the ride, someone has to provide the money required to keep the operation in business, and that is a key word – "business" – for profit or not for profit, it is still a business, and therefore *is* subject to certain regulations as to public safety, taxes or exemptions, legal standing, etc.
As to the question of how he affords it, I would wager that there are plenty of people who would think this a very good idea, worthy of financial support. However, putting oneself forward as a charity does require certain proof of legitimate practices, and it is not unfair to require him to abide by the laws that govern such things. Changing the local laws to bring him into control, though, is no little bit suspicious. It is *possible* that his actions simply brought to light a weakness in genuinely public serving regulations, but it is certainly legitimate to ask "Why?"
His past is there, yes, and includes having paid his debt via time served. Unless there is something not publicly reported in this case, involving other illegal activity, the long arm of the law needs to check that its reach isn't too far.
This is a very good, and much needed service that should be encouraged, not discouraged. Help him make it work!
Very interesting way to market on facebook. I also found a way to automate a couple very powerful methods of getting users. You can grab ID by groups or pages or wall posts with this software. Then once you have them you can do a friend request to your profile or sudo profile. This by passes the captcha codes too. There is also a cool chat program that you can setup scripts and keyword to work with. This program, when I use it I can see a spike in my site traffic. It is awesome…
