Why Was Ronald Reagan the Greatest President of the 20th Century?
by Burt FolsomNo president of the 20th century had a more positive and enduring influence than Ronald Reagan, who was born 99 years ago today. Other presidents, from Wilson to FDR, exceeded Reagan in their impact, but much of it was negative. Sure, they won wars, but they almost destroyed the American economy as well.

Reagan, by contrast, won the Cold War and also revived the American economy from decades of abuse. He was successful both at home and abroad.
Since President Reagan left the White House in 1989, the U. S. has stumbled, so it is wise to ponder why Reagan did so well. Was it natural intelligence or careful political training? Not really—and that fact both galls and baffles his critics. Reagan was a C student at lowly Eureka College and from there he went into small-town broadcasting, and then to Hollywood. He didn’t try to be governor of California until he was 55 years old.
Reagan had three parts to his genius. First, he was a visionary; he believed that people wanted freedom and would do well when more of it was given to them. Whether he was undermining the Soviets, challenging an unlawful union, or deregulating oil production he tried to move in a consistent direction of greater freedom and less government. According to Dinesh D’Souza, “Reagan’s greatness derives in large part from the fact that he was a visionary—a conceptualizer who was able to see the world differently from the way it was.” Reagan knew where he wanted to go: Jimmy Carter, by contrast, had multiple plans to create energy, to generate revenue, and to cut inflation. Often they were contradictory; all of them failed. Reagan was more consistent because he had vision: He knew where he wanted to go and how he wanted to get there.
Second, Reagan had character, and in the eyes of America’s Founders, character was a necessary ingredient for greatness. Reagan stood for a set of ideas, and when trouble came he looked not to polls, but instead he applied courage, kindness, and persistence to achieve his ends. At the end of his presidency, his critics—from Sam Donaldson to Ted Kennedy—admitted that Reagan had changed the world and had done so with candor and honesty.
Third, Reagan was teachable. That trait was essential. If one has vision and character, he must also be teachable to make his life flow in a constructive direction. Course corrections are needed because none of us has life figured out at age thirty. We have to believe in something and we have force of character, but we also have to be ready to modify.
When Reagan reached adulthood, he supported FDR for president. People (like those in his family) were hungry and FDR gave them jobs. Big government seemed to be an answer. But as he grew older and worked with the public he saw the tyranny of federal power. Also, he began to realize that no nation could spend its way into prosperity.
Reagan had lived through the 1920s and 1930s and he reconsidered the evidence for cutting tax rates. The Twenties were the prosperous decade of tax cuts and the Thirties were the depressed decade of tax hikes. He began to believe that connection was more than coincidence. When the U. S. economy went into to a tailspin in the 1970s, Reagan saw the price controls under Nixon and the restrictions on oil production under Carter as being a problem, not a solution.
Free up the economy, Reagan argued, by cutting tax rates. In the midst of the Carter fiasco, during a radio show on October 18, 1977, Reagan pointed to history to give his countrymen lessons. “We’ve tried spending our way to prosperity for more than four decades and it hasn’t worked. . . . Twice in this century, in the 1920’s and in the early 60’s we cut taxes substantially and the stimulant to the economy was substantial and immediate.”
Reagan was teachable. He had modified his ideas, and he would use his vision and character to implement these tax cuts when he became president. Sure enough, he brought rates down for all taxpayers and, as he predicted, revenue to the government actually increased when we gave more liberty to Americans to invest in their country. This dose of freedom was somewhat expanded by capital gains cuts under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. From 1982 to 2007, the U. S. economy more than doubled in economic growth, and we led the world with an ever increasing standard of living and relatively low unemployment.
We owe that freedom and prosperity that so many of us experienced during those years to the vision, the character, and the teachable qualities of President Ronald Reagan.

He was a True Patriot…….. God Bless America !!!!
Because he had Character.
Ronald Reagan came from a time and era when Character counted, when Character was king. A man with Character can lead, can exude confidence.
Ronald Reagan made US believe in that "shining city on the hill".
Now we have the ghetto's of Detroit and the slums of Chicago.
My God! How far we have fallen as a nation, as a people. It is a travesty. We should be ashamed at what our complaceency has gotten US.
What is often not sighted is the fact that Reagan freed more people from tyranny than any other human being in history. If you consider the Soviet Union and it's eastern bloc neighbors as a gigantic prison camp populated by hundreds of millions of people who were all freed directly by Reagan, the greatness of this man starts to approach not other founding fathers of our nation, but some of the great men of recorded history including biblical history. He can truly be considered a type of Moses of our time, leading the children of communism out of bondage.
His work though is not done. Communism and Socialism are on the march once again and now the world needs a new set of leaders who are teachable like Reagan was to learn from Reagan's glorious and humble life how to free another generation from the shackles of tyranny once again.
God bless and thank you to Ronald Reagan for his life and God bless him on his now infinite journey through Heaven. He improved our lives in ways we will never be able to repay.
Despite what the left-wing MSM (BIRM) would have us believe, the era of Reagan is far from over. His common sense solutions are needed now more than ever. The equation is simple: less governemnt equals more freedom. More freedom for a peace-loving people means a better quality of life for everyone, not just in America, but all over the world. There can be no doubt the rest of the world is far better off because of us.
We're getting a lesson in freedom, in reverse, from the Obama administration. Stifling taxes and regulations are strangling our economy, proving that Reagan was right.
Integrity, humility, character. he was John Wayne with political savvy, and the comfort of Grandpa. He pulled this country in a direction we would not naturally or willingly go, and THAT is the true sign of leadership. Like watching Jordan play against my Pacers for years and years, I feel lucky to have been able to witness the impact he had (and still has) on this country, and the world.
There is another Reagan out there, and I believe we will see and hear him soon.
.
Yes, he was the greatest of the 20th Century by far. And, the amazing thing I've come to appreciate from reading the Reagan Diaries, in his own words, is that he was one of the kindest and most decent men you could imagine.
He actually exceeded, by a long shot, any positive impressions you might have already had.
.
One cannot really talk about Ronald Reagan, with Jimmah Carter entering into the equation, at least perhipherally. Mr.Carter, thank you, from the bottom of my heart! Without your laying the groundwork, Ronald Reagan would have had a hard time.
In that same vein, I'd sure like to thank the second one term President, Barrack Hussein Obama, for preparing the way, and laying the groundwork for the next Ronald Reagan to step foreward into the breach and lead US forward, out of the wilderness……….
We need another Ronald Reagan to bring us back from the brink that Obama and crew are pushing us towards.
I used to live behind the iron curtain at the time. I remember bunch of us were waiting for our interview to be accepted in the Komsomol (communist youth organization) – it was expected from all teenagers to join. We were wondering what are they going to ask us. Somebody said: they are not going to ask us about Ronald Reagan – that is for sure. We all laughed – the American President was very cool and there was a perception of power and strength that was coming from him. Reagan is the greatest US President for me – he knew how to kick communist's butt!.
Cowboy Logic writes "Ronald Reagan made US believe in the best about US, believe in that "shining city on the hill".
Now we have the ghetto's of Detroit and the slums of Chicago."
And how far we, the beneficiaries of his vision have allowed thru complacency as you state, that vision to be dismantled by the enemies of liberty. It makes my heart ache to consider it. We have alot of "community service" to do to correct what we have allowed to happen on our watch.
I think President Reagan understood the American people and the American dream. He knew that the hard work and sweat of many is what made us great. He also knew that bigger government was the ruin of us all. Believing in and supporting our Republic and its Constitution. He put his trust in the American people making it possible for them to compete in a world economy (he knew you weren't creating jobs when you create gov. jobs just more taxes and a bigger burden on the men or women who actually work in this country). He was a kind and gentle man who would step on anyone who wronged our country. Thank you for all you did Mr. Reagan.
Character, character, character. That's really all there is to it.
"Why was Ronald Reagan the greatest president of the Twentieth Century"? Because he was Ronald Reagan.
RIP, our beloved 'Gipper'.
Hanzo
Ronald Reagan said, "Yes, we can!" and he meant the people.
Barak Obama says, "Yes, we can!" and he means the government.
Reagan in the 1980's was espousing the same principles he presented in his 1964 convention address. Listen to that speech on YouTube and you'll find that it is timeless. When I hear Republican politicians talking about new realities and how the party has to change and forget the Reagan era, it makes me cringe. Republican politicians need to get some of the courage Reagan had. They need to stop worrying what the NYTimes thinks about them and focus on conservative principles.

Thankfully he didn't let his setbacks during his earlier runs for the White House stop him. The world is a better place because of Ronald Reagan.
………and meanwhile, today the man occupying the Oval Office has none, none, none.
Just a few words will answer why. No personal agenda and he gave a cr-ap about his country. Thats all.
Utter rubbish. Reagan caused huge deficits to spiral out of control, allowed all sorts of illegal activities to go on (including the debacle of Ollie North), gave weapons to the Iranians in exchange for releasing the hostages, etc. His was a fake smile concealing a dark agenda, The Communists were less destructive to the American economy than the bankers who brought it down last year. Look within, America. The enemies of freedom are often those who cloak themselves with protestations of patriotism.
I worked for GE in the late sixties very early seventies. I had an opp to meet Reagan. Infact he joined me for coffee on one of my breaks. I will always remember that day. Nothing phony, he was not a legend in his own mind. A guy who listened and maybe thought a moment about what he would say. Scientists should be working hard to clone Reagan!
Dead Freakin on the mark!!!!!
You seem to have forgotten how Reagan RAISED taxes 3 times, including payroll taxes for Social Security which impacted the middle class hardest of all. You seem to have forgotten that he actively supported a terrorist war against the legitimate government of Nicaragua. You seem to have forgotten that he traded arms to the Iranians to obtain the release of American hostages- after saying over and over that he would never negotiate with terrorists. You seen to have forgotten that the national debt doubled during Reagan's tenure in office. Yet, you still maintain that Reagan was the greatest president of the 20th century?
Excellent article! Any honest accounting of history will show that Ronaldus Magnus was one of our best presidents ever and he deserves to be on Mt. Rushmore more than Teddy.
[...] a national treasure.” Because of what he stood for and what he did we honor him today as the greatest president of the 20th century. God bless America and the memory of Ronald [...]
Oh, balderdash.
Reagan's deficits spiraled out of control? LOL! Perhaps you might want to look at the deficit today.
It amazes me that all of our leaders since Ronnie have managed to squander the peace dividend from the falling of the wall and russian collapse. Just freakin amazing.
"actively supported a terrorist war against the legitimate government of Nicaragua."
Arrant bullshit. The Contras were not 'terrorists', no matter how hard the fellow-traveling Left tried to portray them that way- and the wholly ILLEGITIMATE Sandinista thugs needed to be removed. I'm sure you call recent events in Honduras a "military coup," too.
Tool.
Unfortunately Reagan alone was not enough to undo the systemic damage done to the Republic by Wilson, Roosevelt and LBJ. The march of collectivism seems to be an irreversible ratchet, against which the best we can manage is a holding action.
Another jackazz, mustering the courage to spout regurgitated, unmitigated lies. *Sigh*, *Yawn*.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
Paul Revere, take the blinders off. No, Reagan wasn't perfect. And the bankers didn't cause what happened last year, the conditions imposed on them by those now in power did. Reagan put us into deficits to defeat the evil empire and it worked. He also unleashed the greatest economic properity in our lifetime and arguably longer by getting big government as much out of the way as he was able to.
If you are looking for destruction to America, open your eyes. It is happening all around you.
Yes he was, boob. RR had to work with a dem controlled Congress, boob. RR LOWERED the tax rates, boob.
BHO(apparently your hero) has spent more than ALL previous administrations COMBINED, boob. The 'legitimate government of Nicarauga' wasn't a "legitimate government of Nicarauga', boob. There was MASSIVE voter fraud, boob.Contras-terrorists,boob? What a bunch of crap, they never attacked the citizenry of Nicarauga, boob.Ok, I'm getting sick of having to correct all of the revisionist barking moonbat/commie/facist troll droppings, errh, posts. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
I hope another RWR is on the horizon. I wrote this tribute to the Gipper this a.m.
http://blog.bricksmith.com/happy-birthday-gipper/
I lived through the debacle of the Carter years. Ronald Reagan returned the U.S. to our rightful place in the World.
As it was said back then, the Reagan Presidency was "Morning again in America". What heady times, and so sadly in contrast to today. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
That's very simple…..
Strength of Character
Personal and Unselfish Conviction (and most importantly)
An Intense Belief in the EXCEPTIONALISM of the American Citizen
'Nuff Said !
Good point. Ronald Reagan managed to help free as many people as Stalin and Mao managed to kill.
WE, as a generation, sat and griped and did nothing while the statists-progressives-global citizens have been very busy infesting our schools, colleges, media, courts and government. What was it Reagon said, freedom is always one generation from being lost? I probably butchered that but the point stands. It's time we made up for our negligence. Lot's to do.
Teflon was a product of Illinois, Dixon, Illinois.
Now it's "maliase in America".
No matter how much you disagreed with Reagan, when you listened to him, you knew he actually believed what he was saying. A far cry from every President we've had since.
My favorite Reagan moment was during an '86 debate with Walter Mondale. One of the moderators asked Reagan (who was 75 at the time) if age was an issue in the campaign.
Reagan:" I promise I will not make an issue of my opponent's youth and inexperience."
Even Mondale chuckled.
It's the will of the United States government to reshape the middle east and the world through force. Atleast as long as they can afford it, lol. It's globalization in a militaristic sense if you will.
That's right, Doug. Or, "Mourning in America".
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
In a word, YES. Repeating liberal lies over and over doesn't make them true. Let me ask you, how much better was the country when Reagan left office, and what do you think it's going to be like when Obama leaves office?
mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm
Hello resident troll. You can try to hijack threads without thumbing everyone down for no reason.
That's right, johnny. 'Teflon' Ron, the Lib/Progressive/Facist ilk(such as you), never could manage to stick their false accusations, innuendo or insinuations to 'Teflon' Ron, because it was just that, lies, lies and damned lies! It's interesting to note how, even after all these years, this load of prog/lib/facist crap still dosen't hold sway with anyone, except excitable, shrill, lying prog/lib/facists. Are you a prog/lib/facist, johnny? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo

You mean like your posting?
While much of the positive things to be said of RR are true he did not always deliver. He ordered the US to invade Granada to distract us from the 300 Marines killed in Lebanon under his failed mid-east plan! He did not bring down the USSR alone, that was a struggle going on since WWII, over 50 years of sacrifice and struggle by our own brave men and women in government and private life "fighting" the communists every day. He gave amnesty to illegal immigrants and did not reinforce our borders as promised, and now the situation is even worse.
And, yes the bankers and there customers (sub-prime mortgage holders) share a great responsibility for the economic situation we face today and under RR the saving and loan debacle left us the tools to avoid another such collapse but we forgot those lessons.
RR was the Teflon president only because we stress his perceived successes and ignore his mistakes, and refuse to learn from those errors and his successes.
Unlike our current president, Reagan realized that respect had to be earned and that you had be respectful in order to be treated with respect. He talked to people, not at them.
I always admired his forthrightness. It was, as he said, because his word had one meaning. I still believe.
Reagan increased funding for the Mujahedeen, and got into bed with Osama Bin Laden. ____
This is a great article about a truly great man. In the 1980’s I was in high school and college, but I knew President Reagan put the well being of the country and his fellow citizens first. This is why I always felt safe with this man in the Oval Office unlike now. He did not have a personal agenda or the need to build monuments to himself, and he did not worry about his legacy.
When compared to the other presidents of the 20th and 21st centuries Ronald Reagan is the one most like our founding fathers because he believed in liberty and he loved this country. President Reagan knew that big government was not the answer, but a free people know what is best for them and their families not a centralized, big brother government.
Thank God for Ronald Reagan he was the man our country needed at the time. Pray the next Ronald Reagan will step forward to save our country and soon. In the meantime we all need to pray our country is NOT “fundamentally transformed” by the current occupant of the White House. God Bless the U.S.A.
Reagan was simply in the right position at the right time.
But let me ask you all: around which year did our Federal Government become unconstitutional?
You are right.
Look at just who, and what we have had to suffer through since Reagan.
The First Idiot Bush
Clinton the Serial Philanderer
The Second Idiot Bush
……..and now, this Obamination of a human being.
We have squandered America. If those four represent the best and brightest America has to offer, we are doomed!
The War on Drugs is a failure. Crime Control Act of 1984, and Asset Forfeiture Act of 1984, big government my friends and followers, smashing liberty in the face.
The government did get to lock up a lot of people. I think California has started to release some of these people do to budget problems. Watch out Californias, you may have a felon coming to your neighborhood soon.
Yours Truly,
Knoxs
Cowboy, i'm not a fan of most presidents, they do to much of what their handlers tell them to do. However, I must admit Reagan looks like a shining star amongst that group!
I recently finished his autobiography, "An American Life". It should be required reading for all high school students instead of "Rules for Radicals" that some public districts are pushing. A truly great American who loved his country.
To quote Victor Davis Hansen–You don't have to be perfect to be good.
Lucky guy!
Reagan's greatness derived from the fact that he was a good man who respected and honored the public he served. He understood that individual freedom was the basis of America's strength and prosperity. Leaders who can barely hide their disdain for the commoners clinging to guns and religion cannot but fail to move the country forward, and are a danger to the very foundations of America.
Amen brother, RR wasn't perfect. He was after all only human, but you cannot take away from what he accomplished and be honest.
Ronald Reagan had core values that are shared by the majority of Americans and Americas founders and he lived them. Ronald Reagan worked at the Presidency to improve the US. He was educated regarding our past, the founding fathers intentions, the US Constitution, he believed in it and he upheld it. He was passionate about the US, he loved our nation and it's people. He was not ashamed of the US or our history. He had a vision that was compatible with the US Constitution. He found a church in DC to attend. HE WORKED HARD!
I don't believe that obama can allow an election in November. It would kill his ego! He is living in a "perfect time" in America to fundamentally change our system of government by actually over-throwing it! At least since FDR, but I'm sure since the civil war, American Citizenship only is given to External Personality Types, or types looking for a dictator! America was founded by Internal Personality Types, or people who believed that they had control over their fate now have been systematically replaced by External Personality Types, or people who believe that "Fate is the Hunter"! This is true. I know it! Plus, there has to be a "reason" that this transformation of America has occurred as it has!
A Russian official once confided to an American official that ;
The Soviet Union's greatest fear is that America will discover that the Russians simply can not afford the expenditures the Cold War was extracting from the Russian economy.
Ronald Reagan sensed this and sent the arms race into fifth gear with talk of SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative or 'Star Wars' as the libs liked to call it)
That's when the Soviets realized that they needed world opinion on their side to combat this escalation. Hence, they did not appoint a typical Old Line Soviet pol but a nice young glitzy type. Enter Gorby and his chic looking wife Raeza.
Reagan still won the world wide PR campaign and Gorby was forced to TEAR DOWN THE WALL.
Yes we incurred huge deficits, but with no Cold war to worry about Bill Clinton (and the Republican congress) will get credit for being president that provided us with budget surpluses.
Anyway, that's how I remember history,
And I figure that on this day, Ronald Reagan's birthday, folks should be reminded of this.
You do understand the deficit spending was done to upgrade our military and bankrupt the soviets. Reagans legacy was tarnished by clinton and bush.
Im guessing you were born in the 1990's. There was a world war to stop the spread on communism called the cold war. I guess the lib schools dont touch on this because they see it as a defeat. Communism was crushed by reagan plain and simple. It took 8 years for reagan and nearly 40 years for everyone else. I was proud to be an american under reagan. cant say the same for the current regime are you proud?
Didn't President Regan have some big shoulders? I respected him and he inspired me. He also taught me to be grateful to have Freedom and Liberty as an American. I believe that meant the most to me. That is what still lives on. That is what needs to be taught to our young people. The propaganda the progressives are spewing is frighting.
umm freedom is now globalization. You libs amaze me I just hope the EU collapses before Nov 10 because that will kill socialism. Ask the Iraqis how life was under Saddam
Now we are tea baggers and astro turf.
I bet johnny thinks carter was the best because his lib history told him so.
My dearest friend and regular follower, i can't champion Reagan as a small government and liberty minded president. His record indicates otherwise.
Yours Truly,
Knoxs
Yes to defeat he Soviets. I guarantee if Reagan was president the goat farmers would not have even attempted 9/11 ask libia how those bombs tasted. I guess we dont remember that one either
I can thumb up or down whoever I want. I don't agree with hogwash it gets a thumbs down, and if someone promotes the truth, it gets a thumbs up.
Oh my gosh Doug, I've been saying the same thing about sitting
on our laurels feeling fat and full, while we watched our country
being taken over by liberals…My wording might be a bit different,
but the same meaning is there…We owe it to coming generations
to hand back a country as close to what we found, if not better.
As far as President Reagan goes, he made people proud and
as for me, I'd see him, and he made my heart smile…
His record indicates otherwise? Compared to who in the 20th century, lil' johnny? Who's your fave pres of the 20th century? Jimmah, LBJ, obummer? You have a friend or a follower? I know what that's like, you seem to follow me from thread to thread sometimes.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
Another troll who should shut his big yapper.
You need to do a fact check on the propaganda fed to you by your professors. You should show some respect to the legacy of a true patriot's commitment to protect the liberty and freedom which allows you to post such drivel.
Do some research. Read what others around the world think of your beloved Obama. If you really understand what a deficit is, you should start apologizing to your children right now.
Paul Revere? Give me a break!
I like that. Barack Obama: Paving the way to the next Ronald Reagan.
It brings me hope.
The invasion of Grenada was a necessary move to help stop Castro’s slow spread of communism so near to our nation, and to stop the threat to the American students there. Grenada was not a diversion tactic. And could you elaborate on what you mean by “failed mid-east plan”?
I am convinced that the Ronald Reagan tribute at the 2012 Republican National Convention will out-do anything the Olympics might come up with for sparkle and true spectacle. So that's something to look forward to.
Yup! The Gipper pulled America's head from out of it's a$$. Now It's Sarah's turn……..
HBD dear Ronnie…….
I've always heard Democrats start wars and Republicans finish them. Nothing could be more true of Regan, FDR/Truman thought they had a victory in WW2, they did but the war wasn't over. One last dictator still stood(Stalin), and he made other dictators look like amateurs. The Soviets rolled over eastern Europe and held on to it for over 50 years. Those people suffered greatly while dems said we had to appease, the battles continued for decades. Until Regan who had enough of this nonsense. Drove the Soviet system to ruin, the Soviets had been at war with us since the twenties, trying their best to hurt us any way they could. In two terms(8 years) Regan had the Soviets on their knees and bleeding badly. There wasn't long to wait. Regan knew we could beat them, and we did.
After those events I considered Regan the Best president of the 20th century, for (at the very least) freeing the Eastern block from tyranny.
For what's more important, those that prematurely claimed victory, or the man who closed the book on WW2.
"Why was Ronald Reagen the greatest president of the 20th Century?"
That's a trick question, right?
Can somebody please forward a copy of this article to president Obama.
Amen. Reagan was one of America's 3 greatest presidents.
There's no question that FDR is hugely overrated, no doubt because he served 4 terms and because he was President during World War II. There's also no question that FDR was an excellent wartimeleader. Listen to his radio broadcasts, which were very frequently prayers. They certainly bolstered American morale. But that doesn't diminish the fact that his New Deal was an unmitigated disaster which not only failed to end the Great Depression but actually prolonged it. (It might not have been "Great" but for FDR's idiotic economic policies.)
Most historians agree, even those on the left, that the Great Depression ended only when America entered the war, because the war launched a huge expansion in the US economy. But what is less well recognized is that much of the economic "recovery" engendered by the war was the sudden and nearly immediate REDUCTION in the US labor force with America's entry into the war. By 1945, there were nearly 12 million Americans in the Armed forces (probably 98% male). With a US population of 138 million in 1945, that represents nearly 10% of all Americans, and MORE than one-fifth of the 1940 labor force! Little wonder that unemployment was no longer a problem, when the labor pool was reduced by 20% because they had enlisted or been drafted into the armed forces.
FDR's economic policies were essentially "national socialist" (which is not to say Nazi). (See "Three New Deals" by Wolfdgang Schivelbusch, which describes the startling similarities between FDR's New Deal, and the economic policies of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy in the 1930s.) And, like the other "national socialist" economic regimes, the only way they could create growth and reduce unemployment was by going to war. I hope that won't be the ultimate outcome of Obamanomics, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it were.
Bill
What a sterline example of Lefty whack history. The mujahedeen were worthy of US support, they bled the commies. US support to Afghans did not go to Bin Laden's troupe of clowns at any time. Work harder if you want to slur the greatest President of the century.
Regan read Ludwig von Mises the great Austrian economist and applied his economic philosophy, this helped make him great
You think Israel and Jews are your enemy. What is truth?
[...] Why Was Ronald Reagan the Greatest President of the 20th Century? from Big Government by Burt Folsom [...]
The Tea Party is Ronald Reagan. Oh how we all miss him.
Doug,
You couldn't be more correct!
Re-reading what I wrote, and what you wrote, we should all mobilize. We should ALL become active Community Organizers, and we should ALL work together to take this country back from those who have hijacked it, and US. Personally, I believe the United States of America, our beloved Republic, is still worth saving. We can still make it into "the shining city on the hill"………..
Cowboy_Logic hits the nail on the head when he said:
In that same vein, I'd sure like to thank the second one term President, Barrack Hussein Obama, for preparing the way, and laying the groundwork for the next Ronald Reagan to step foreward into the breach and lead US forward, out of the wilderness……….
Barack O"atom"bama is blowing up our country before our eyes….
Yes, we did have huge deficits, but they weren't caused by Reagan. Reagan did lower taxes, and tax revenues were up. Congress was just spending the money faster than Reagan could bring it in.
"The enemies of freedom are often those who cloak themselves with protestations of patriotism. "
Look in the mirror, dimwad.
JFK was saying the same thing in '60 as Reagan in '60. JFK embarrased the Russians and they killed him. Reagan was saying the same things, embarrassed the Russians in the '80's; do you really think it was Altzheimer's? Do you know there is no diagnosis for Altzheimer's? Nancy, it was the Russians- something in his drink one night at some cocktail party. Ted Kennedy delivered it. Both these Presidents are martyrs of freedom. I'm expecting a black helicopter any minute.
Funny how you trolls only remember the deficits of REPUBLICAN presidents. Must be Progessive Alzheimers.
When I was growing up in the 80's I didn't care much for Reagan. He reminded me of an old codger. granted when he took office in 1981 i was 10 years old. As his two terms went on I realized that this was the guy that was going to kick the Soviets ass. Now, almost 40, I find myself begging for someone to come close to equaling the Old Man. We need him now more than ever. As for the current crop of so-called Conservatives, The Gipper would be ashamed of most of you. Get your SH*T together before our great Republic comes to an end.
While many women and men sacrificed to hold the line against communism, Reagan reversed the course of detente and unilateral disarmament to declare the Soviet Empire "Evil." He changed our mission statement–communism was not going to be tolerated, but left on the "Ash heap of history." There are a few things that I think Reagan did wrong (Iran-contra is not very high on my list, btw) but that is because he focused on two important goals–economic recovery through more freedom and less government and peace through strength. Pretty good choices.

I agree wholeheartedly! Take that Progressive SOB off and put a true American hero on the rock!
It's time for America to kick communist butt again.
This time the butt is in the White House.

I stood on the West lawn of the US Capital on 1-21-81, when Reagan told Americans that "we have every right to dream heroic dreams". That's what inspired me! Mt. Rushmore isn't big enough for him in my book, I think he needs a monument all to himself, like Washington or Lincoln!

Change??? Change it back!!!
Ronald Reagan was my hero. He was the man I knew as President of this country for most of my childhood. His words & his power to move & inspire the people was amazing. I remember watching his speeches on tv with my mother & it felt as if he was talking to me. We lack that real connection & have for a long time. It's as big a reason Americans are so pissed off & where telling them we are tired of the same old, lame money grubbing power brokers telling us what is best. Where is our next Reagan? Where is that person that is going to feel the pulse of America taking us in that right direction? We need him. This is the modern version of the Carter administration. We all know it. Too many are saying it for us not to be heard. Many of us echoing words from The Reagan Era.
I heard there was a meeting of the cabinet. Each secretary gave his comment or read his white paper on the issue of Communism. then it came Pres Reagan's turn. He said "my idea is this: We win, they lose."

He was, boob. There was economic growth in the the '80's, boob. The Cold War ended under Reagan, boob. Was he suppose to let Americans die in Iran, boob? I bet 'ol booby here thinks it's great to hold terrorist trials in civilian courts too. Perhaps booby forgot how insane Hussain wanted the legitimate Hunduras goverment's decision to oust their leader overturned. 'Ol booby has also forgotten how insane Hussain's budget includes cap and trade and healthcare, neither of which has passed. How will insane Hussain get the money…oh wait, TAXES. Including TAXES on the MIDDLE class. At least Reagan wasn't own by unions like 'ol booby's president is. At least Reagan didn't call terrorism "man made diasters". At least Reagan was for smaller government and not a machine designed to make us all dependent on the government. Someone needs to bring 'ol booby up to speedy on the insanity of the left in the last year. Though 'ol booby is probably a Soviet left over here for all he government hand outs. Too bad we'll all be unemployed and no one wll be left to pay the high taxes imposed on us by booby's boys in Congress. Thanks for the history lesson, booby!
Utter bullshit is more like it. Apparently you're drunk on kool aid so let me remind you of your current president and how he has had Congress raise the debt ceiling repeatedly for his huge ass deficit for his social programs designed to enslave us all. I'm so sick of hearing people like you bark about deficits of Republican presidents while ignoring the fact that the Chinese own America's ass thanks to that dim wit BHO, whom I'm sure you voted for. The Communist were and are destructive. People like you are an enemy of freedom. You are perfectly happy being enslaved by government.
Thanks to RWR and my parents, I didn't grow up to be one of those liberal panty waste. Thank you, Ronnie!
One of the key things about being a conservative is deciding what it is that you want to conserve. TR's progressivism was a far cry from the proto-fascism of Wilson, and a necessary response to the changing circumstances of turn-of-the-century America. Moreover, as warrior, peacemaker, genius, and inspirational role model, he belongs on Mt. Rushmore. Reagan's conservatism includes conserving the gains made by TR, and even some of the advances of FDR and Truman (for whom he voted). The libs against whom Reagan rebelled had lost the decency of those men (as well as their strength). I firmly believe that both TR and Truman would have been Reaganites (can you imagine either one of those strong men pulling the lever for a Mondale?).

There are millions of Reagans out there now. That is the problem the left faces in the days ahead. The Tea Partys are driving the politics and they are full of Reagans.
Reagan was one of the biggest criminals of the 20th Century, and his fundamentalist free-market ideology finally brought the US to the edge of bankruptcy in 2008.
Superb posting…. I only hope that the Barrack Hussein is only a 1 term man, he has really hurt the US of A! It reminds me of Carter in a way, but this man has really put us back in time.
A few years back when the Reagan Legacy Project was going strong, I suggested that every public restroom in the country be named after our esteemed former president. Whenever anyone walked into one to do whatever they planned to do, they would be reminded of him.
You sound just like all the other Union Idiots I know………
The Dutch Boy was Chauncey Gardener personified.
President Ronald Reagan was right when he said “Now, so there will be no misunderstanding. It’s not my intention to do away with government. It is rather to make it work — work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back.” Mr. Reagan spoke these words at his inaugural on January 20, 1980. At that moment in time our country was driven to a precipice via a myriad of misguided policies, but it was President Carter, and his band of liberal Democrats that took the final steps off the ledge. Mr. Reagan caught us safely from the fall through inner-strength, after he survived an assassination attempt, and then brought to bear his uncommon display of common sense on our nations past economic calamity. President Reagan successfully led the country through the last battle in the cold war, renewed our national purpose, and provided leadership to a nation in dire need of it.
This nation has spent $1.8 Trillion dollars more than it has taken in in tax receipts, it has $12 Trillion on its national credit card, and has completely consumed all funds held in our entitlement programs. The only way that Medicare, Medicaid, or even Social Security gets paid is via a printing press buttressed by the willingness of foreign governments to underwrite it. That is what the “full faith and credit” of the United States has come to, a promise to pay interest on an obligation to a foreign government. If we are not able to meet the obligations we presently have; why do we seek to create more of them via a nationalization of our health care system? In short: Uncle Sam is broke, the US economy is shrinking, and the President of the United States wants the federal government to run 1/6 of the US economy that health care represents; and the government is unable to run a monopoly, the US Post Office, at a profit.
As President Reagan warned in his speech in 1961, on the dangers of socialized medicine; the American people would not accept socialism outright, but under the banner of liberalism we would accept every facet of socialism. For the past sixty years the entitlement programs that started as humanitarian safety nets, under Democratic majorities, have since grown into retirement programs to the exclusion of private investment, and the most fraud ridden delivery of health care any nation has ever witnessed. Remember where we are presently situated fiscally, how long will it be until those promises are worthless? As you and I can only live beyond our means for a limited time, so too with governments, one way or the other the printing press will be stopped. When we fail to meet these obligations the liberal democrats will aim for the rich, and when they miss, it will be our wallets that they hit.
The deficits in the Reagan presidency were a combination of spending to rebuild our military and Congressional entitlement programs. The budgets Reagan submitted would not have, in themselves, caused deficit spending. Banks may have been a trigger to the recession, but they were attempting to protect themselves from inevitable financial losses caused by lending to homebuyers who couldn't reasonably afford the houses they were buying. Why did they lend the money? Because a Democrat-controlled Congress threatened them with sanctions if they didn't! Don't blame the bankers for running to the Federal Government for help either, they thought they were owed payback for supporting their Democrat overlords.
Bob, you are a bit confused. It was the Iran-Contra "scandal", which was a trade of weapons for cash to support the Nicaraguan Contras, who were rebelling against a repressive, communist government. During the Cold War, opposition movements were supported both overtly and covertly by both the Western Powers and the Eastern Bloc; for instance, Cuba, subsidized by the USSR, provided military aid and support to the Sandanistas, enabling them to take power in Nicaragua in the first place.
Not all of them. Bush Sr., as a Moderate Republican, attempted to appease the Democrat Congress and got backstabbed by them for his trouble. President Clinton reduced our Army from 18 Divisions down to 12 and ignored terrorist actions against us for 8 years. I didn't agree with much of Bush Jrs domestic policies, but he had his priorities straight when it came to defending the nation. For 7 years, he managed to keep the folks who have sworn to kill us and destroy our society for the Glory of Allah fighting on their territory instead of ours. Again, the Democrats, having endorsed the invasion of Iraq (justified by many of the same arguments cited by the Clinton Administration), stabbed the Commander-In-Chief in the back in a time of war in any and every way they could. Now that we have another Democrat President, military downsizing will ensue again.
What is your justification for making such a remark? Other than a strictly ideological distain for Conservative principles.
They're already aiming for our wallets; they're just describing it as "taxing the rich".
If you are actually a Blackhawk Pilot, you're getting paid by the taxpayer. If you want your pay increased, it's reasonable that taxes should increase.
Firstly, If he/she is a blackhawk pilot they I'd gladly pay more to him/her so I could sit here in a free country living a free life, so long as that money did not go to any pinko commie programs. Second, our taxes don't pay for anything anymore – we borrow a third of our budgetary demands. Finally, pilots are my personal heros, if you knock them I will hand you the intellectual equivalent of your aorta.
"Reagan caused huge deficits to spiral out of control"
To an extent, but the about of fallout that was left from Stagflation and the "Great Society" probably had something to do with that.
"allowed all sorts of illegal activities to go on (including the debacle of Ollie North),"
Illegal doesn't always mean "not right", as FDR's decision to violate the Neutrality acts in 1939 and 1940 shows.
"gave weapons to the Iranians in exchange for releasing the hostages,"
A fine mixture between that and threatening them with retaliation. The weapons were primarily to gain the funds we wanted to supply the Contras (hence why it was the Iran-Contra affair).
"His was a fake smile concealing a dark agenda,"
Sometimes? Maybe. But hardly all the time.
"The Communists were less destructive to the American economy than the bankers who brought it down last year."
Perhaps, but you are forgetting that while the much -maligned bankers could at best only trash the ecconomy (primarily unconsciously due to the rampant corruption nvolved), the Communists could have realistically have trashed OUR REPUBLIC ITSELF. Or perhaps you missed the part where it turns out that McCarthy and HUAC were not always wrong?
"Look within, America. The enemies of freedom are often those who cloak themselves with protestations of patriotism. "
Exactly. Like anonymous trolls with pennames based off a Blacksmith who did his duty two centuries ago.
Fool.
"You seem to have forgotten how Reagan RAISED taxes 3 times, including payroll taxes for Social Security which impacted the middle class hardest of all."
Accepted.
"You seem to have forgotten that he actively supported a terrorist war against the legitimate government of Nicaragua."
Oh PuhLEAZE. The Contras and our other Central American "Friends" were not nice, but they sure as HELL had far less blood on their hands than the Sandanistas did. And the "Legitimate government" came to power in a coup (granted, against another corrupt regime, but still). And the Sandanistas shot first by raiding across the border and by setting up military bases for the USSR and Castro.
"You seem to have forgotten that he traded arms to the Iranians to obtain the release of American hostages- after saying over and over that he would never negotiate with terrorists."
And yoyu are forgetting that FDR was circumventing Congress at every possible oppertunity when it came to the neutrality acts ins pite of his pledge to work with Congress.
"You seen to have forgotten that the national debt doubled during Reagan's tenure in office."
Perhaps, but did we not still have the methods to pay it off?
"Yet, you still maintain that Reagan was the greatest president of the 20th century?"
Greatest does not mean perfect.
"It's the will of the United States government to reshape the middle east and the world through force. Atleast as long as they can afford it, lol."
Good. Because if you have EVER known ANYTHING about the Middle East, you would recognize it as a cesspit that needs draining. Not unlike Germany and Japan after WWII.
"It's globalization in a militaristic sense if you will."
If that is so, than we need more of it. A LOT more.
And the reason for you mentioning that is?
"I don't agree with hogwash it gets a thumbs down and if someone promotes the truth, it gets a thumbs up. "
Given you rprevious record of comemnting, that has been all but thoroughly demolished.
Remind me again, WHO fired the first shots of the Civil War?
"While much of the positive things to be said of RR are true he did not always deliver."
Agreed.
"He ordered the US to invade Granada to distract us from the 300 Marines killed in Lebanon under his failed mid-east plan!"
Disputable. While that mya have been part of it, the Cubans just happened to come along at that time to try it.
"He did not bring down the USSR alone, that was a struggle going on since WWII, over 50 years of sacrifice and struggle by our own brave men and women in government and private life "fighting" the communists every day."
True, but he DID help land the killing blow.
"He gave amnesty to illegal immigrants and did not reinforce our borders as promised, and now the situation is even worse. "
To an extent.
"RR was the Teflon president only because we stress his perceived successes and ignore his mistakes, and refuse to learn from those errors and his successes."
Agreed.
And FDR got us into bed with a corrupt and utterly incompetent regime (the KMT) and a corrupt and utterly murderous one (the USSR).
File it under 'MAKES SENSE IN CONTEXT."
With that "context" including a few hundred thousand Soviet soldiers in Central Asia.
No.
And don't think I don't notice the convenient similarity between your penname and our dear friend Joseph Stalin. Perhaps you are an admirer?
Certainly, knave, certainly.
He;s right up there after Mao, and Stalin, and Hitler, and Lenin, and Atatturk, and Mussolini, and Sukarno, and Suharto, and Castro, and Himmler, and Ortega, and Franco, and Salazar, and Pancho Villa, and Che, and the Young Turks, and the Ayatollah, and the entire House of Saud, and Nasser, and Sadat, and Gaddafi, and Ho Chi Minh, and Peng De, and Pol Pot, and…..
On the whole I agree but WIlson? PuhLEAZE. Wilson was a naive idiot who often didn't know half of what he was getting into, whose Racial beliefs were rather repugnent, and wh dismissed the Founders far too much, but he was hardly a Fascist and indeed I would go further to say that he scarcely had a authoritarian bone in his body. He was by NO means perfect, but the authoritarian measures so many people point to were in fact attepts to counter Imperial German and Soviet infiltration into the US, ad were primarily lobbied for by his military and intelligence (such as it was) heads.
MARKHAM ROBINSON FOR GOVERNOR 2010 AIP AMERICAN INDEPENDENT PARTY
Just say no To Nightingale for governor
He was NOT simply in the right position at the right time. He was the right person, with the right personality, commitment, and integrity, the right program, and the means to communicate that program and elicit the support of the majority of the American people. You may not remember, but he took all but one State in his first election and, if I recall correctly, all but three States in his re-election. No President since then has won such overwhelming approval at the Ballot Box.
yes the red boogeyman that required a family to build a fallout bunker in the back yard and stock it with canned food. The red boogeyman disappeared just in time to find the radical Jihad boogeyman.
Perpetual war for perpetual peace? LOL.
More broken promises from Obama on tax cuts…great article
http://crosssection.wordpress.com/2010/02/12/pres...
There are presidents who are good at setting/changing the course and there are good administrative presidents who do very well at fine tuning what they have.
Reagan was good at devoting his time of presidency to set Nato on course to challenger the soviet world and at the same time seek reunification.
Clinton was good at administering the country and looking inwards, presiding over the largest economic growth in US history and pushing down the numbers of social security recipients, but reluctant to get involved in world events.
0Ronald Ray-Gun told us that the worst thing that Americans could hear was the message "We're from the US government and we're here to help you"
Then he went to fascist generals in Latin America (like Efrain Rios Mont, Manuel Noriega), and Muslim Fundamentalists in Afghanistan (like Gulbuddin Hekmatyar) and said "We're from the US government and we're here to help you!" and ran up a huge deficit.
He even told us that Illiterate Muslim Fanatics were the "Moral Equivalent of our Founding Fathers"
He was successful in wasting billions of dollars of our tax money on reckless adventures abroad, and speeding up the process of deregulation at home. Oddly "deregulation" meant that if we as American Citizens owned a meat packing plant, we could get away with kicking out the unions and hiring illegal immigrants, (many of whom came here fleeing the brutal regimes that our tax dollars subsidized in Guatemala, Hounduras, and El Salvador- oh, but those countries are now models of prosperity, right?) but if we did not own factories, there was no change in what we could or could not do.
Oddly, today his sick, nearsighted groupies beat their chests, praise the Iraq War (Easily the biggest failure of big government in the last 40 years ), denounce terrorism, while ignoring the gipper's support for terrorism, and shriek for more endless war and more oppression of those who came to our country illegally from countries where all of the policies that conservocrites endorse (lower taxes, no welfare, no public health care, no abortion) are firmly in place.
Of course, this is not unique to the US. There are tens of thousands of people in Russia and Georgia who still run around wearing Stalin pins, ignoring Stalin's role as a mass murderer, and there are those in Japan who visit their special shrines to those who died in WW2 and continue to deny that Japan ever committed any war crimes.
