Big Nanny’s slacker plan: Mandating insurance for adult “children”

Several times during the cloture debate on Sunday, Democrats hailed a provision requiring insurance plans that cover dependents to provide benefits to children up to age 26. Democrat Sens. Ben Cardin and Tom Harkin both championed the unfunded mandate in ther floor statements.
This manifestation of the Nanny State is especially galling given the massive levels of generational theft that the Democrat majority has presided over the last year.
I can tell you what most fiscally responsible parents are thinking when they hear the feds “taking care” of everyone else’s adult “children” for them by confiscating their tax dollars and forcing private companies to comply:
What. The. Hell.
There are an estimated 20 states that have already passed legislation requiring insurers to cover adult children. And it’s these very government health care mandates that are driving the cost of insurance up:
“Whenever you insure somebody whom you didn’t insure before there’s some additional risk,” said Mueller, executive vice president of the Wisconsin unit of Willis Group Holdings Ltd., one of the world’s largest insurance brokers. A state requirement that insurers cover autism and mental health has added 3% to the premium rates of employer-sponsored plans that renew on Jan. 1, when those mandates also take effect, Mueller said. Extending coverage is good, he said, but doesn’t come free. “The problem with all these good ideas is there’s funding necessary,” Mueller said.
About 20 states require insurers to offer parents coverage of adult children through what are sometimes called “slacker plans,” according to the Council for Affordable Health Insurance, an advocacy group whose membership includes insurers, health-care providers, actuaries and insurance brokers. About 10 states have enacted such laws in the past few years, said J.P. Wieske, the organization’s director of state affairs.
…”Employers do not have the appetite right now or the means to take on additional risk, no matter how noble. . . . People are stretched to the max,” Mueller said.
In New Jersey, the slacker mandate covers “children” up to the age of 30.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama may delay his year-end Hawaiian vacation to remain in Washington as a bill to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system makes its way through the U.S. Senate, the White House said on Tuesday.

"They are going to make a decision later this evening about when the president will leave," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said at a press briefing.
Obama had been expected to leave for Hawaii, the state where he grew up, on Wednesday.
Obama's fellow Democrats in the Senate cleared the second of three 60-vote hurdles early on Tuesday to move the landmark legislation — Obama's top domestic policy priority — one step closer to passage by Christmas.
Republicans, who have just 40 seats in the Senate, have vowed to use every tactic they can to delay passage of the measure, which has consumed Congress for months and inspired intense political brawling.
The goals we seek can not be driven down from leaders whose motivations are self-serving. Real change that we can believe in will come from the people. It will be a bottom-up process that must be built upon good and meaningful values that serve everyone, and have no personal agendas.

Rep. Stupak: White House Pressuring Me to Keep Quiet on Abortion
When asked if he has the votes he needs to stop the bill if, in its final version, it does not include the language of his amendment or nearly identical language, Stupak did not answer directly.
“Well, if all the issues are resolved and we’re down to the pro-life view or, I should say, no public funding for abortion, there’s at least 10 to 12 members who have said, repeatedly, unless this language is fixed and current law is maintained, and no public funding for abortion," said Stupak. "There’s 10 or 12 of us, and they only passed the bill by 3 votes, so they’re going to be short 8 to 9, maybe 6 to 8 votes. So they [Democrats] do not have the votes to pass it in the House.”
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he wants a vote on a final bill before Christmas. After that, a House-Senate conference could convene in early January to merge the Senate and House versions of the bill and lead to a final vote by both chambers.

CNSNews.com: "Now, I understand that you were in contact with the White House or the White [House] was in contact with you, I guess over the weekend. What kinds of pressure are you under, let me ask you that?"
Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.): "Well, from the House leadership or the White House – a lot of pressure. They think I shouldn’t be expressing my views on this bill until they get a chance to try to sell me the language. Well, I don’t need anyone to sell me the language. I can read it. I’ve seen it. I’ve worked with it. I know what it says. I don’t need to have a conference with the White House. I have the legislation in front of me here."
Rep. Stupak: "They asked me just to hold off for a while and not to say anything about this language. But as soon as the news broke that they had this [compromise], and they got the 60 votes, folks were asking me, and I’m not going to run from the issue I’m going to stand up and say, ‘Look, here’s my objections.' Here – it’s not just my objections – but there’s a number of my [colleagues] who feel strongly about this issue, and these are the parts that have to be fixed. There are three ways in which the bill dramatically deviates from current law."
Rep. Stupak: “So we’re getting a lot of pressure not to say anything, to try to compromise this principle or belief, and we’re just not – that’s just not us, I mean, we’re not going to do that. Members who voted for the Stupak language in the House – especially the Democrats, 64 Democrats that voted for it – feel very strongly about it. It’s been part of who we are, part of our make up. It’s the principle belief that we have. We are not just going to abandon it in the name of health care."
CNSNews.com: "So, to go back and ask you again, do you have the votes needed to stop the bill, if it comes to that?"
Rep. "A review of the Senate language indicates a dramatic shift in federal policy that would allow the federal government to subsidize insurance policies with abortion coverage," said the statement.

The republican party is the biggest providor of socialistic federal spending policy in the world.
Its biggest benefactor is the US military and the contractors that supply it. Furthermore, it subsidizes the pharmacutical and insurance industries by keeping them in the pilot seat as working americans have no freedom to choose.
Obama has the best argument in the room hands down.
