Race-Based Government Established at Expense of Troops?
by Brian DarlingThe House and Senate are wrapping up work on the last appropriations bill of the year and rumors are swirling that the controversial Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act, also known as the “Akaka Bill,” will be included in the Defense Appropriations bill. The defense measure is proving to be controversial, because House and Senate appropriators are using it to carry non related matters like a $1.9 trillion debt limit increase, an extension of unemployment benefits and the Native Hawaiian measure.
The Native Hawaiian bill, a long time priority of Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI), would set up a race based government of “indigenous, native people of Hawaii.” Opponents argue that this bill is unconstitutional and unwise. National Review Online sounded the alarm bells today and sources on Capitol Hill confirmed to Big Government that a version of the Native Hawaiian Bill may end up in the Defense Appropriations bill.

The Hill rumor is that Democrats plan to attach Akaka to the Department of Defense funding bill before this session ends — basically, sneaking it in at a busy, contentious time of year to avoid full debate.
The bill would create a race based government to solicit federal monies and create programs to benefit individuals who fit the definition of “Native Hawaiian.” A United States Office for Native Hawaiian Relations would be created to negotiate a special political and legal relationship between Native Hawaiians and the United States. The supporters of this bill argue that Native Hawaiians are similar to an Indian tribe and they should be declared a sovereign entity so they can negotiate benefits from the U.S. government. The fact of the matter is that Hawaii was a kingdom with a monarch before becoming a state, unlike American Indian Tribes. Furthermore, the Tribes recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs are not racially exclusive and the Native Hawaiian government would be race based.
Many in Hawaii are concerned that they would be unconstitutionally excluded from the new governing entity, because they will not racially qualify to participate. The Supreme Court case, Rice v. Cayetano (2000), declared unconstitutional a state sponsored vote in Hawaii, limited to individuals who could prove Native Hawaiian decent, to a board overseeing Native Hawaiian issues. There was a strict racial classification and an individual who was deemed not racially eligible to vote challenged the constitutionality of the vote under the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. He won. Many of the same constitutional concerns apply to the Akaka Bill and a court may deem this bill unconstitutional when there is a determination of the qualifications to participate in the new Native Hawaiian Government.
Many Native Hawaiians have lost faith in the governing entity, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), to represent the will of Native Hawaiians. OHA will become the defacto governing entity of Native Hawaiians and they seem more interested in lobbying for more and more federal money as the solution to all of the problems in the Native Hawaiian community. Some Native Hawaiians don’t want federal monies, because they don’t want to give far away Washington, D.C. more and more control over lands in Hawaii. There are Hawaiians who object on the grounds that they would be racially excluded from the new governing entity, even though they have lived their whole lives in Hawaii.
This is yet another example of politicians in Washington, D.C. trying to pull a fast one. For those who have a distaste for big government, like me, this is yet further evidence that politicians are pushing unpopular and potentially unconstitutional ideas in the hope that you are not paying attention.
Late today, Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, released the following statement:
I have never suggested that the Akaka Native Hawaiian Recognition Bill be passed and adopted as part of the defense appropriations process. I don’t know where this nonsensical suggestion originated. The Akaka Bill for the past many years has been considered under what we call the regular order. It has had hours upon hours of hearings, many, many revisions and amendments and has gone through the scrutiny of three administrations. We have had hearings in Washington and in Hawaii. It is not a measure that has been shepherded in the dark of the night. It has been fully transparent.
Transparency and pressure may have backed off the supporters of this bill, yet one should not be confident that some version of the Native Hawaiian Bill will be put into the Defense Appropriations Bill until they read the bill.

Aloha…..I own a condo in Hawaii and this sucks…..most Hawaiian Natives are mixed Polynesians from the South Pacfic, along with some Japanese…..they have a great culture and I love going there frequently to relax. But, this makes no sense. We never held them as slaves. We never murdered them for their land….we helped establish their freedom from the Colonials of English Royalty. Also, we spent a lot of taxpayer dollars to improve the infrastructure for these islands, and to protect them from the Jananese during WWII. Go figure, all they want is another handout. This sucks big time. Mahalo.

I like how the descendants of those who championed statehood of Hawaii forget that their ancestors were delighted beyond belief that they would become part of the US and not any other country. There were plenty of countries who were licking their chops after Hawaii.

Just think of all the countries that have ever taken over any land…who formed the governments? What language do the conquered people speak? What customs must they observe?

In my opinion only the white people should be considered americans seeing as how it was the white men who created america. The white man, however, has used the term 'american indian' to denigrate and disparage the natives, who are neither americans nor indians. The term I much prefer is 'Native VICTIMS!' or 'VICTIMS of the White Men'. We hawaiians are not americans. Were hawaiians. But the white man shoved his american crap down our throats just as they did to the natives on the mainland. And we should never forget how the white man came to claim ownership of our lands: they did it with treachery, deceit, cowardice, violence and the threat of violence, and murder. I define violence,by the way, as "the cowardly use of force against innocent persons, places or things". Cutting a tree down, for example, is always a cowardly act because the tree has no way to defend itself nor can it flee to safety. Yet the white man has cut down trillions of trees just on the northern continent alone. Consider this, white men: a single large tree dose more for the planet and the other living things on the planet than all the humans that have ever lived, and will ever live, combined! The white man, on the other hand, has never done anything FOR the planet, FOR the planets environment, nor FOR any of the other living things on the planet. We should not allow them to bury a defense bill with pork and with the raising of a credit cap. Founding fathers like John and Abigail Adams knew that slavery was wrong in the beginning, and wrote about their hope to rid the Country of it. Will it make things better for native Hawaiian to hate a white people today that had nothing to do with the wrongs of yesterday? Is it okay for people to hate white people because of the wrongs of some of their ancestors? Is racial hate of white people brewing among the Hawaiin Islands? I hope not. America has brought good things to Hawaii also, and I'm sure most Hawaiians appreciate the jobs that progress has brought to our 50th State. Hawaiians already get preference on hiring in many of the jobs in Hawaii, and most people that I know that visits Hawaii, respects and appreciates the native traditions and cultures. Hating white people will not make the future of Hawaii a better place to be.

Seems that Pacific Islanders thought trees were extremely useful, after cut down and hollowed out. Nobody dared yell at THEM at the time for their cowardly use of force against trees.
China is already pre-postioned in Panama. THey would LOVE to intice Hawaii into their sphere. What does that have to do with anything? Does the fact that they had a State mitigate that we took them over in a planters' coup d'etat? The bill is bad news on any number of levels, but one can oppose it for those reasons without rewriting history. The annexation of Hawaii was an imperialist act.

For some years the BIA has been trying to deal the "black Seminole" (descendants of escaped slaves) out of the tribe because they are "not Native Americans". And the very definition of Native American is racially-based; it's not like I could just opt to join a tribe.

This is how our "leaders" conduct business in Washington. When these measures cant stand on their own merits they are married to a more important bill that they know will be fast tracked through the voting process without as much as a second glance. It's a grave injustice to see legislation passed in such a way. If these measures and provisions are not worthy enough to stand on their own they need to be thrown out. Any additional attempts to pass them without amending them, especially by adding them to other bills, should be considered treason.
When people vote them out of office and never again let them think they can get away with such garbage again. This goes for the RINO's as well. Time to clean up the cesspool known as Washington. First thing get rid of all unhinged democrats (the intellectuals who know, tell us, what's best for us), then go to work weeding out the RINO's.
Race based government makes sense but only if all distinct races get to govern their own. Frankly, a white based government in many U.S. states would be great. Crime would be low. You native Hawaiians may stay in your supposed native land….and we White Americans should negotiate the sale of the islands to China in exchange for the debt we owe them. My vote is "go for it". You see….we owe them 800 billion dollars, and I feel that would be a good trade for your freedom and sovereignty….I mean you are part Asian, right?? What I was trying to impart was the wisdom that my teacher at Mililani Uka taught us in class, which is that Hawaiians were very happy to become a state. Has it been a perfect record since then? Of course not…the government is run by humans who make mistakes. Is it better than being run by Russia, Japan, or China? You betcha.

Just so you don't feel alone, I also have felt my culture stripped away from me. My parents were the first generation born in America from Germany and Switzerland. When my parents were growing up, their families refused to pass down culture, including language, from their native soils because our great country was at war with Germany and they wanted to show how very much they loved America by assimilating completely to its culture. I do not have my grandparents anymore, so I have to go to school to learn the language that maybe should have been my first. I am so very glad that my grandparents chose to blend themselves into American culture. I will get over the language thing and the fact that I have no recipes from them, no history, except for what applied in America, or anything with other cultural significance. It's all right. I can take a class because I live in America, the best and freest country on the planet!

Wrong again. They were first called "Indians" – mistakenly, because Columbus &c though they had reached India – and the "American Indians" to distinguish them from the "Indian Indians".
As far as "Native Americans" goes, I'm a Native American. I was born and raised here.
As far as "Native Americans" being the wise guardians of the land, they (though not all tribes) were slash-and-burn nomads. Look up the term "Buffalo Jump" to see how they hunted. (I make no excuse for the devastating slaughter of Buffalo by Westerners (actually, Easterners, when you think about it.)
The idea of who was here first, and when (going back 10,000 years) is really beside the point. When Columbus &c got here, America was a stone-age continent. In only 500 years, Western philosophy and ideals transformed that into the most technologially advanced nation on Earth.

I'll go 1 step further…Sell Hawaii to China, then make Puerto Rico, an island nation whose inhabitants would love it, into a state. We wouldn't even have to change the flag.
