A Bit-Less-than-Full Faith and Credit
by Bruce Abramson“The full faith and credit of the United States Government.” That’s what backs up our currency—and that’s all that backs up our currency. Throughout most of history, governments had to back their currency with something tangible, typically a fixed quantity of gold. In fact, most coins actually contained the requisite quantity of gold because many of the folks who used those coins in commerce didn’t particularly trust the King whose likeness they bore. It’s good to be king and all, but if you wanted to add a ducat’s worth of wheat to the royal granary, you had to put up an actual gold ducat.
Paper currency required people to place a bit more trust in their governments, though the rule remained—at least in theory—that anyone holding the note could take it to the official treasurer and exchange it for the specified amount of gold. Roughly forty years ago, when Nixon took the U.S. off the gold standard, we dropped every last pretense of convertible dollars. From that day forward, the only thing backing up our currency was two simple words: “trust us.”
Imagine that. Richard Nixon—of all people—stared at the world and said “trust us,” and the world complied. Through seven Presidents of both parties, the world—from multinational corporations to anti-American drug dealers and terrorists—has trusted us to stand behind our currency and our debt. In an uncertain world filled with violent disagreement, the one point on which all could agree was that the U.S. remained uniquely trustworthy.
So when Standard & Poor’s downgraded our credit rating on Friday, the message was both stark and clear: the United States is a little bit less trustworthy than anyone had thought. Why? What happened? Who is to blame? The White House, of course, is quick to point fingers everywhere but the Oval Office. Yet this perceived decline in America’s trustworthiness is eerily familiar to those who have paid attention to the Obama Administration.
In foreign policy, Obama failed to stand behind anti-regime protestors in Iran or pro-democracy moves by the Honduran Congress and Supreme Court; he canceled missile defense systems that we had promised to Poland and the Czech Republic; he abandoned a deeply flawed but longstanding ally in Egypt; and he has taken every opportunity to embarrass Israel. From Colombia to Saudi Arabia, Obama has put our allies on notice: prepare to act unilaterally, because the United States is a bit less trustworthy than you might have thought.
In economic policy, Obama has injected massive uncertainty and complexity into health care, banking, and real estate; threatened massive changes to industries that either consume significant amounts of energy or exhibit an environmental impact; partially nationalized the auto industry; elevated union desires over the needs of business; and vilified the very notion of corporate success. Throughout the private sector, Obama has put businesses on notice: don’t bother investing in new ventures or creating new jobs, because the United States is a bit less trustworthy than you might have thought.
Friday’s announcement merely took the unstated message and made it explicit. A candidate who campaigned on an amorphous agenda of “change” has become a President who cannot be trusted to fulfill our national promises and obligations. A reduced credit rating is hardly a bug in the age of Obama; it is a feature. With seventeen months in office, Obama’s legacy is now secure: He was the President who successfully devalued the trustworthiness of the United States. Anything else that he might accomplish—for good or for ill—will pale in comparison.

What a nice, descriptive summary of his ever growing failures. Well done.
I see now where Obama is having his cronies and the media saying that "Standard & Poor has lost credibility". Funny they say that now but during the debt ceiling debate they used our AAA credit rating as ammunition for the debate on why we needed to raise our debt. Even Obama can't be this stupid, the whole financial fiasco has been carefully orchestrated by his little buddy Soros and carried out by the puppet Obama.
the damage that he has done will take decades to repair. It probably makes most independents and even liberals wish for the days of George Bush. But hey, he won the Nobel Prize for what he did in his first 12 days in office, didn't he?
He never ceases to discourage me………………….absolute pathetic failure as a president and leader.
Worst President………………………………..EVER!
I literally gag every time someone uses the term "President" and the name "Obama" in the same sentence…ooops! There it goes again!
a lot of people still harbor the illusion that Obama is a 'hands on President'…
Or even a 'President' at all. He is a figurehead, a hired stooge who reads what is writtern for him by his handlers and then goes off to play somewhere. He has lead on exactly nothing, and his entire presence can be summed up to striking poses, wearing his iconic suit, and mouthing David Axelrod's speeches dictated by HIS masters.
This is the biggest chimera of a Presidency in our history; 100% illusion.
This does not mean he isn't a dangerous fellow, or that he somehow doesn't 'agree' with his handlers. He is, and he does. But The Man Behind The Curtain is the one advancing the agenda, which is decidedly NOT a pro-American
one. This is becoming more and more painfully obvious…
You can bet Soros made money off the credit downgrade and the tanking of the markets.

And I did to, and so should you.
I wouldn't trust Obama even if our currency was backed by something real and tangible.
When empty fiscal promises come from a know nothing, empty suit, that really give pause..

A little depressd today..trust me..
This is President Downgrade's economy, it has been since he spent his first trillion on windmills and choo choo trains.
Until President Downgrade is removed from office his economic depression will continue.
Tuesday, November 6, 2012 cannot come soon enough.
The market tanked while Obama tried to calm the country and the markets. The liar has no credibility. The establishment media spinmeister propagandists were out in force on the Sunday talk show circuit assigning blame to anyone but Obama and the dems. The Tea Party was their favorite target. This moring on ABC's GMA featured Mellody Hobson as a financial expert who claimed that S&P cannot be trusted and "everything that they do is suspect." ABC failed to point out that Hobson had worked as a fund-raiser for Obama in the past and is working with his 2012 campaign. Is there no shame? Can't the establishment media stop their denial and face the facts – Our government spends too much money? Balancing the budget was not such a bad idea and if Congress and our imbecile in Chief had listened to the tea party reps we may still have our AAA rating? No the establishment media can't tell the truth…. they're in denial just like junkies. Debt junkies.
Negging me for being a capitalist. Are there any free marketers left on BG? Are you all neocon socialists now? Here's a tip, buy SGG and go long.
Like El Rushbo said – if this bozo is so willing to bash the GOP for all the ills he's inherited, he can also take the good he's inherited. He inherited a AAA national credit rating and exchanged it for a AA+ rating. I no longer see incompetence at work here. Evil intent carried out with competence comes closer to the truth in my opinion.
With each passing day BHO makes GWB look better in the eyes of the Nation and the World.
SOROS, owner of stock in Moody's, may have made $10 Billion off of downgrade:

Where the hell is Issa?
It's more like he's the most successful commie ever?
Please print in your paper; reply to XXXX XXXXX column:
President Ronald Reagan was right when he said “Now, so there will be no misunderstanding. It’s not my intention to do away with government. It is rather to make it work — work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back.” Mr. Reagan spoke these words at his inaugural on January 20, 1980. At that moment in time our country was driven to a precipice via a myriad of misguided policies, but it was President Carter, and his band of liberal Democrats that took the final steps off the ledge. Mr. Reagan caught us safely from the fall through inner-strength, after he survived an assassination attempt, and then brought to bear his uncommon display of common sense on our nations past economic calamity. President Reagan successfully led the country through the last battle in the cold war, renewed our national purpose, and provided leadership to a nation in dire need of it.
This nation has spent $1.8 Trillion dollars more than it has taken in in tax receipts, it has $14 Trillion on its national credit card, and has completely consumed all funds held in our entitlement programs. The only way that Medicare, Medicaid, or even Social Security gets paid is via a printing press buttressed by the willingness of foreign governments to underwrite it. That is what the “full faith and credit” of the United States has come to, a promise to pay interest on an obligation to a foreign government. If we are not able to meet the obligations we presently have; why do we seek to create more of them via a nationalization of our health care system? In short: Uncle Sam is broke, the US economy is shrinking, and the President of the United States wants the federal government to run 1/6 of the US economy that health care represents; and the government is unable to run a monopoly, the US Post Office, at a profit.
As President Reagan warned in his speech in 1961, on the dangers of socialized medicine; the American people would not accept socialism outright, but under the banner of liberalism we would accept every facet of socialism. For the past sixty years the entitlement programs that started as humanitarian safety nets, under Democratic majorities, have since grown into retirement programs to the exclusion of private investment, and the most fraud ridden delivery of health care any nation has ever witnessed. Remember where we are presently situated fiscally, how long will it be until those promises are worthless? As you and I can only live beyond our means for a limited time, so too with governments, one way or the other the printing press will be stopped. When we fail to meet these obligations the liberal democrats will aim for the rich, and when they miss, it will be our wallets that they hit.
ps. Get ready to lean forward ladies this one is gonna hurt . . .
Love the description over at Drudge:
Barackalypse Now…
Speaking of Axelrod, I can't believe the Regime parades Axelrod on the Sunday shows. Very telling the Regime sends a hired propagandist to be the spokesman.
A big bag of flatuence.
i originally said this in reference to his dependence on teleprompters- that he's basically Charlie McCarthy without the monocle- but more & more i wonder who's really playing Edgar Bergen…
Wait until next summer . . .
Perhaps if he had quoted Jimmy Buffet instead of Warren Buffet, the markets would not have tanked.
"…but I know…it's my own damn fault."
Wow, obama two years on the job and you manage to crash our economy and drive our credit rating into the ditch…. pathetic!
And you lib's STFU! It's his fault because he fought hard to not allow spending cuts. It's the democrat's fault for demonizing all republican plans to cut and it's the republicans fault for not standing their ground and allowing the republican elite to dictate the agreement.
You can bet that he is making money coming and going on Bank of Amigo puts and calls.
Would love to see all of his trading records . . .
Hey Congress are you paying attention?
OK, somebody help me out, can I call today "Black Monday" or would that make me a racist??
We're thumbing you down because we do not like you…
He is a very good Manchurian Candidate…
I just got a new t-shirt……………..it reads right across the front………………….in BIG BOLD letters.
…………………………"It's Obama's Fault"…………………….
…………………………I love IT!!!!!
Ron Paul can't even get any of his 534 fellows to go along with his ideas…
The best he should hope for is that when Republican "X" gets elected, they make him Fed Chairman, and throw him over the back fence…
Yep…
Can't add a thing to that…
Heard an economist say that for each downgrade it takes about 15 years for a nation to recover. If the US is downgraded again…good chance unless we get some strong leadership…it will be three decades for recovery! That's more than a generation of our children being smacked across the side of the head by us…you…whomever…every day for 30 years!
He's backlogged with F&F, NLRB, EPA,…..I'll let you know when I get to the end of the alphabet soup….
Oblamos Downgradeo
Axelrod IS the voice of Obama, and David Plouffe is the one behing the demonization of the tea party…
They are a one trick pony.
And it shows…
"The Downgrade President" always wanted to be 'historic' He got his wish. He's historically the most:
1- Economically destructive President
2- Embarrassing President
3- Tax, Borrow & wasteful Spending communist President that NO ONE TRUSTS.
5- Reviled Anti-American Pres
6- Obnoxious, deceitful & arrogant Pres
7- Foreign President who sued his own State, Az., with the help of 11 Latino Foreign Countries. Never forget!
8- Narcissistic, bitter, condescending, inept President.
9- Taqqiya talking President. No one believes a word out of his mouth. Nor should we.
10- U.N. oriented President. ….and was he ever really VETTED? Has he been FULLY VETTED to run again??!
We Regular Americans smelled this rat early on during the Obama/Pelosi/Reid Socialist ObamaCare Tax
Rip Off ! That was the spontaneous birth of the TEA Party Americans who want a Balanced Fed Govt Budget Amendment and small un-intrusive Govt. that doesn't steal our Freedoms! We well outnumber Obama-bots. He has to import, bribe with entitlement checks, or indoctrinate his commie followers.
He's the first Anti-American Traitor President who resents Americans & who should be prosecuted, for Abuse of Power, Dereliction of Duty, High Crimes against a Nation &Failure to uphold Oath of Office. Special Prosecutors, finish this nightmare correctly.
well, Axelrod writes the words- but just WHO dictates to him is the mystery.
But George Soros is one of them; he hired Samantha Powers- Cass Sunstein's wife- and made her a protege'.
Sunstein is extremely powerfull, and now his wife has Obama's ear as well; that is the genesis behind the 'arab spring' nonsense. So there are a 'few' Edgar Bergens…
I generally refer to him as El Presidente, it seems more fitting of this guy, and using the "P" word about him makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.
Washington, Jefferson,Lincoln,Reagan, Obama…hmmm, one of these just doesn't fit.
How can anyone trust a perpetual serial liar?
2 Forged birth certificates, false SSN, forged selective service registration, on and on!
"There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls."
–George Carlin
When the time comes in the not-too-distant future, it would be fitting to put Helicopter Benny's mug on the $1-trillion Federal reserve note and Mubarack Hussein Ogabe's mug on the $5-trillion Federal Reserve note. That would let the people know exactly who was responsible for our slide into Zimbabwe-style economic ruin.
Thought he made some 850 million betting on the downgrade, big shock right?!
Oh the webs they weave, someday it is going to tangle them up and trap every last one of them!
hey chukie, insider info ring any bells dimwit?
Ron Paul and Gary Johnson are the ONLY Republicans worth supporting.
The rest are like Michele "I believe in the free market but I support farm subsidies to get votes in Iowa" Bachmann or Mitt "Federal health care is bad, Massachusetts health care is good" Romney or Tim "I call it ObamneyCare but I'm too gutless to defend it in a debate with it's author" Pawlenty.
Herman "The TARP saved the economy" Cain? Newt "I support Dede Scozzafava" Gingrich? John "I am an empty suit who worked for Obama" Huntsman?
The choice is clear. The question is do we have the guts to make that choice?
How about maurie strong, ya know, the freak who dreams of China being the ONE and ONLY super power –
In time it will all be revealed, I am certain of it. Never discount barry's handler valerie, a true hater if ever there was one –
In the end, there are many and each one has as much disdain for freedom as the next -
Ron has his place in the big picture, and it is not as president –
Keep him focused on that which he knows best and leave the rest to another -
10 Billion, I read he put up ONE billion – hmmm
Great data and all I can hear is 'cloward and piven' collapse the system – btw, where is the old bat, why isn't she out there screetching for her minions to take to the streets? Guess she has dirt ball vanny jones on the job –
What great work satan does, neverending evil and greed ~
Maurice Strong is George Soros who doesn't like publicity…
Which Soros, egomaniacal Bond villain that he is, craves.
There are others. Some are VERY quiet.
The Krupps, perhaps?…
Why is everyone claiming the Obama is a failure. He is doing exactly what he planed to do.
True that, dcase.
It's a freakin parody in many ways, do they honestly believe they are fooling anyone other than the simpletons who are already 'sold'??
Thank you, President Obama. Thank you for adding $5 trillion to our debt. Thank you for holding unemployment over 9%. Thank you for attacking Libya without the approval of Congress. Thank you for increasing our deficits to $1.5 trillion a year for the next 10 years. Thank you for doubling the price of gas. Thank you for giving money to Wall Street since they need it bad. Thank you for not closing Guantanamo. Thank you for not ending the wars you promised to end. Thank you for ending illegal immigration by making this the last place people want to go. Thank you for $10 light bulbs. Thank you for the Edsel…I mean Volt (all 500 of them). Thank you for blaming everyone but yourself for everything that goes wrong and actin' kinda angry about it.
Sincerely,
Jimmy Carter, Herbert Hoover and George Bush
No Longer the Worst Presidents (not by a long shot)
Welcome to the Obama Depression!
In the era of Obama, we back up the full faith and credit of America with unicorn farts.
I thumbed you up because that was funny.
Nope…Ohbammy color doesn't factor anymore…we all know he's a pinko…
To the Communists, he scored a goal….Nationalized Health Care.
That is worth a one-term Presidency, Economic Chaos, and the loss of the House/Senate/Presidency in 2012 for 4 years.
More likely he's Mortimer Snerd. Charlie McCarthy was pretty bright.
thanks for stating what I've said to many:
Blofeldt lives.
Soros is that evil bastard stroking the white kitty.
Where is Sean Connery when we need him? (and please don't tell me that Scot is also a "progressive").
yeah, where does one start with the most transparent [-ly felonious] administration in history?
Connery a Progressive?
Just TRY to take HIS money away…
I'm hoping and praying he is not.
but with Hollywood, one never knows (and I believe Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan are).
Soros in his own words.
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/open-society-soro...
"Happiness and moral duty are inseparably connected." George Washington
he isn't; his dog in the hunt is Scottish independence; not hardly a 'progressive' notion.
Moore is an old school liberal- he would be quite conservative by today's left.
Brosnan is a Progressive through and through…
I was in Scotland during Lady Di and Prince Charles' wedding.
What a hoot, I've never laughed harder at irreverent hilarity.
I love the Scottish, nice to hear that SC maintains the fearsome independence
of his people. I guess he's sufficiently up in years to fit into the mold of Hollywood leading men used to be like (in terms of character).
This is just a bit of that "fundamental change" we were promised.. I was one of those people who heard that as an ominous warning when he said it in the campaign.
Ron Paul 2012
having both British and Scots heritage here, we are of two minds on this.
The sun didn't set on the British Empire for 200 years. Not bad for an island.
But the Scottish are a riot, never have so many had so little and been so damn cool.
Connery is pretty much detested by the Progressives ever since his Playboy interview in 1966…
now that's a bit before my time….
'Baba' Walters and Meredith Vieria brought it up decades later…
He said a girl, if hysterical, could use a slap.
THIS made heim persona non grata with the feminists- which are progressives. So, there you have it…
I agree with you about Bachmann. Anyone who claims to have read Ludwig von Mises and still supports farm subsidies either is lying about having read him or else, didn't understand what she read.
Von Mises was a brilliant essayist whose writing was so clear that I find it hard to believe that anyone could read him and not understand him. You might not agree with him but not because you didn't understand what he was saying.
I don't know if Ron Paul can get the nomination at this point in history. I hope he does. I'm not getting any younger and I would like to vote for a candidate who actually agrees with me about economics at least once before I take the great dirt bath.
