Big Education Follows the Big Automakers into Detroit’s Ditch
by AWR HawkinsDetroit used to be a city that conjured up visions of American greatness, of American ingenuity. Automakers like Chrysler, Chevrolet, and Ford placed their stamp upon that city and Americans were proud to buy (and drive) the cars built there because the power of an American V-8 was legendary or the ride of a Cadillac was dreamy or the perceived sophistication of a Chrysler was unequaled.
But those days have long since passed. Now we realize that behind the wonderful cars once built in Detroit there lurked a sinister Democrat/Socialist/Union machine that portended that city’s destruction even as its renown was burgeoning.
And sadly, this Democrat/Socialist/Union machine is no respecter of persons. So after sucking the life out of Detroit’s automakers it appears to have also sucked the last throes of life out of Detroit Public Schools (DPS).
Therefore, whereas two of the biggest automakers – Chrysler and Chevrolet (GM) – couldn’t make enough profit to keep their heads above water by 2008, so too in 2011 the DPS system struggles to hang on. Keep in mind that by the fall of 2009 DPS was already running a $259 million deficit for that fiscal year and could only afford to hold classes in 172 of its 272 school buildings. (That’s right: 100 schools were closed.)
Moreover, just as the auto-unions were willing to drive Chrysler and Chevrolet (GM) into the ground unless the government stepped in and guaranteed all their fringe benefits, so too the teachers unions have taken the position of students be damned. They don’t care if DPS has enough money to hold courses in all its schools so long as it has enough money to pay their health care, their retirement, and all the other perks they’ve managed to swindle from the 3 or 400 remaining Detroit taxpayers.
Need proof?
Well just consider this: 47% of Detroiters are “functionally illiterate.” That means about one out of every two people in Detroit can’t “fill out basic forms, for getting a job, …[read] a prescription [to know] what’s on the bottle [or] how many [pills] you should take.” In short, they can’t read well enough to do “basic everyday tasks.”
Wow, bravo for that government Democrat run school system. (And just think, it won’t be long till this kind of excellence permeates our healthcare system too.)
Detroit is a perfect example of what happens when Democrats are allowed to institute the crazy ideas they usually only talk about when no one else is listening.
The city is ruined. What few jobs remain there are out of reach of many Detroiters because they can’t even read. Surely Glenn Beck wasn’t too far off when he compared Detroit to Hiroshima “after [being] hit by an atomic bomb.”
Perhaps the only mistake Beck made is that an atomic bomb would have been easier for Detroit to recover from. As it now stands, the Democrats have laid waste to the city.

What must be done to Detroit is that it needs to be dissolved as a political entity. It needs to be added to surrounding counties. All current pensions, benefits, tenure will need to be renegotiated with the state of Michigan and not become a responsibility of the counties that absorb parts of the former city. New hires would be the responsibility of each of these counties.

Flying into Detroit's airport is an eye-opening experience. When I'm there for layovers, I always whip out the laptop and pull up Fox. They don't like that.

Add into the mix that for close to 70 years there was almost no incentive for most folks in Detroit to really get an education. Why bother when you could work for the Big 3 from 18 to 65, earn a good (or very good) wage, which allowed them to buy a house, cars, boats and other toys, with no concern for retirement because of guaranteed pensions. If you had all of that, who cares about education, which allowed the schools to do most anything they wanted.

The TEA PARTY Republicans are unwavering to amend this huge financial problem, to revise this misinterpreted law. President Obama is obsessed for pushing through a multibillion dollar plan, to give 20 million plus illegal aliens a path to citizenship. The mainstream of American has no notion that by federal law we must support those people once legitimized. In a study by the Center for Immigration Studies, the total net cost of the 1986 Simpson/Mazzoli amnesty (direct and indirect expenditures of services and benefits to the former illegal immigrants, less their taxable contributions) amounted to over $78 billion in the ten years following the amnesty pardon.

An amnesty is a reward to those breaking the law. Issuing an amnesty to illegal aliens only encourages more illegal aliens enter the United States. The amnesty of 1986 was supposed to be a "one time only" amnesty promised by deceased Democrat Ted Kennedy yet since 1986, Congress passed a total of 7 amnesties for illegal’s: Yet this type of leniency benefits neither our social order nor those being amnestied. An earlier (INS) Immigration and Naturalization Service study established that after living in the United States for 10 years, the average amnestied illegal alien had only a seventh grade education and earned less than $9,000 a year. This detrimental to all Americans, as already subsist on a lowest of incomes with illegal aliens stealing jobs from our own class of people, who have been displaced by businesses for profit. Amnestied illegal aliens have no guarantor to support them financially.
Instead, by enacting a mass amnesty, Congress places a shocking financial weight on American taxpayers to maintain those amnestied. The 1986 immigration bill has been a failure, not because it’s—BROKEN–but for the reason that the laws were never obligatory? By granting amnesties, Washington has set a dangerous precedent that threatens homeland security. Our normal immigration procedures involves screening to block potential criminals with foreign crime records, people with communicably diseases, anarchists and terrorists from entering the United States. Yet millions of illegal aliens have avoided this screening process by authorities and a volume amnesty would allow them to permanently bypass such screening, that was a serious oversight of the 1986 ICRA.

I actually live 10 minutes from Newark, New Jersey and went to college on the border of Newark and South Orange. The place has been corrupt and Democrat since it was 90% Italian back in the 40s, the black mayors inherited and continued what the Italian mayors started.
Glenn Beck was right about Detroit looking like Hiroshima “after [being] hit by an atomic bomb.” I moved away from the Detroit area 2 years ago and never plan to return. Ever.
People don't believe how crappy that city really is until I have them do a tour via Google Street view and have them pick out 5 or 6 random places to view. It's a craphole from one end to the other with the only exceptions being a few decent parts of the downtown.
Dennis Archer was a democrat but he couldn't fight the cronyism leftover from the Coleman A. Young era that's still prevalent today. He unfortunately became known as an Oreo cookie or black on the outside and white on the inside.
It is so sad the way you kids have been cheated out of an education by the union run state funded madrassas that now pass for public education these days…..
Unfortunately many of the parents in Detroit do not care about education. A woman I knew was a high school teacher in the DPS and told me that out of the 6 classes she taught daily she would typically have ONE parent show up for parent-teacher conferences. So sad.
I was very surprised that Archer won. And even a little hopeful he could change things.

Detroit is actually every bit as corrupt as Chicago. But whereas the Chicago Machine is a well-oiled beast, driven by cunning thieves, the Detroit Machine is a stinky old straight-eight, missing on two cylinders, leaking oil all over the place, driven by a bunch of crack heads.
Wait a second. Detroit was killed off by the decline of American manufacturing. This blaming Democrats, progressives, Marxists, communists, is silly. At one time America was a major manufacturer: we built things. There were millions of manufacturing jobs. Someone could come out of high school and make a very good living assembling cars, using a drill press, milling, forging, etc. Then, in the last 50's and early 60's Japanese cars began selling in significant numbers (German Volkswagen had sold in decent number since early 50's). The Japanese had strong protectionist policies to prevent US automakers from competing in Japan. Similar occurrences happened in other industries. Rather then also take protectionist steps the US decided on a "free trade policy." US manufacturing slowed, but remained viable. Then all hell broke lose when the US took Free trade to heart. The US knowingly decided to follow the teachings of one David Ricardo who argued (early 1800's) the "theory of comparative advantage " in which each country will specialize in economic activities where it has a comparative advantage. (i.e. natural resources, skilled artisans, agriculture-friendly weather, etc.)
The US entered numerous free trade agreements (NAFTA being the most famous) and threw manufacturing under a bus. The US decided it had advantages on financial services and agriculture, but little advantage on assembly and manufacturing.
Detroit was knowingly killed off, as was Pittsburg, Cleveland, East St. Louis, Buffalo, etc. The Republicans under Nixon, Ford, both Bush's and Regan did as much to kill off all of manufacturing as Democrats under Johnson, Clinton, and Carter.
This was not an accident: it was policy decisions to improve the economy. IT probably worked, but the distribution of benefits was simply horrible. A classic case of the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer, and the middle class getting poor.
Why do you think there are millions of unemployed in America. We traditionally had slightly less than 5% unemployed, that number reflected American willingness to move, change jobs, drop out, whatever. Now it is over 9% and will structurally remain around that number: there are no jobs. Why do you think the middle class is disappearing? It was planned that way. No, not some conspiracy theory: it was debated in Congress, the press, union halls, during elections etc etc etc.
We are simply harvesting what we sowed. Stop blaming Detroit. Stop blaming Democrats. Stop blaming those Marxist. Stop blaming unions. We chose to do this to ourselves. We liked competitive advantage: sounded good. We just forgot about what happened to those at a disadvantage. So, pay your taxes to support the poor: it is your price for Plasma TV's not made in America. Pay your taxes to support decaying cities. It is your price for steel no made in Pittsburgh. Pay your taxes to support medical benefits for the elderly. It is your price for textiles made in India and not North Carolina. Pay your taxes to support food stamps. That is your price for cars made in Korea and not Detroit.

It IS the progressive government and it IS the progressive unions….
"Criminal and corrupt" are the key elements. Detroit Public Schools has been plundered by moochers and thieves. You can't fix things while the crooks are still in control. Putting in more money just gives them a reason to stay. When marauding pirates are looting and sacking the city, it doesn't make sense to send more money into the city.
Interesting numbers: 1.8 million, 800,000. The 800,000 remaing is close to the percentage that are illiterate.

Nobody would want to move there as long as the moochers and thieves who have been running everything are still in control and still plundering, looting and stealing everything in sight. If the crooks could be run out of town conservative entrepreneurs would definitely move in and have things ship-shape and productive in no time.
The system is dominated by crooks and sociopaths too preoccupied with stealing and gratifying their own desires to be bothered with teaching – if they were ever capable to begin with, since most of them are probably products of Detroit Public Schools. I cannot imagine how any parent could let a child they love anywhere near those schools. If they're too poor to get out, their children would be safer and learn more out on the streets.

Corrupt politicians and bureaucrats; corrupt cops; corrupt unions; lazy and dishonest public employees; incompetent, indolent teachers, progressive and Socialist idealists… the people who run Detroit…
… they're all Democrats.
Democratic and Progressive policies and principles are destructive enough, but the lack of integrity and depraved character of Democrats makes it 10 times worse.
