Changing GITMO’s Address, Doesn’t Change Terrorists Motives

Aaron Schock (R-IL)The same people who have brought you 10 percent unemployment, government run health care and a national energy tax are now attempting to bequeath you with another unwanted holiday gift. This time, however, the stakes are even higher as they want to bring terrorists to US soil.
The White House has just announced their plan to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees to Thomson Correctional Center in Illinois. From my briefings at GITMO and speaking with people who know the situation well, I can say that moving GITMO terrorists to Thomson, is a huge unnecessary gamble.
Those terrorists still remaining in GITMO are among the world’s most dangerous warriors. They are wickedly creative in thinking out of the box when contemplating doing us harm, as evidenced by the attacks of September 11, 2001. They command the loyalty of thousands of fellow jihadists around the world and have complete control over the minds of followers, both in detention and on the outside. On a whim, they can—and have—ordered those under their command to commit suicide at a moment’s notice.
I have enormous respect for American military personnel who will guard Thomson along with civilian law enforcement. These professionals will undoubtedly be well-trained and dedicated to protecting the public. But they will be responsible for guarding the largest terrorist cell in the world.
Those in favor of closing GITMO do not seem to get the fact that terrorists are not going to be mollified by simply changing the address of the terrorist’s prison. Rather than satisfying the left-wing base and attempting to win an international public relations battle, we should keep the state-of-the-art detention facility in GITMO open rather than bringing these terrorists to small town America. Terrorists need to be tried in military tribunals, as opposed to civil American courts that come with an array of rights of the accused, appropriate for criminals but not for terrorists.
This decision of moving GITMO terrorists to Thomson was rushed and planned in secrecy. Rather than answering the questions about who exactly is coming, what security improvements are being made to Thomson and how much this will cost, the Administration is simply selling this as an economic stimulus package. While the president’s Council of Economic Advisers estimates the relocation of these prisoners may reduce unemployment a few percentage points, it’s important to remember these are the same people who promised the unemployment rate would remain under 8 percent after the stimulus passed. We’ve all seen how great those predictions have turned out.
The bottom line is Thomson is a top quality prison, very well equipped to handle maximum security criminals. It should be opened as a state or federal prison to ease overcrowding, but not to house the most dangerous terrorists in the world. Only time will tell how wise or reckless this move is.
Before any decision is finalized we need answers to these critical questions. Indeed, it was the answers to these questions that caused Governors Granholm of Michigan and Sebelius of Kansas to say thanks but no thanks.

This is just money laundering by the administration for it's crony friends, they could care less about the issues, Obama has to eventually close Gitmo and he makes money for his friends, if your him what's not to like.
Another ironic issue seems to be that none of the detainees want to go to a federal prison, maybe they have seen and episode or two of "Oz" but for some reason they are less than thrilled.

As none of the suspects are American citizens, i thought the US could dump them in the airport (outside US border control) if none of their home countries accepted them back. Is this true?

I believe the only time "Stop Loss" can be used is during their six year commitment. Most sign up for a three or four year active duty tour, but all sign up for a six year term which includes their active duty time, plus the remainder of their Ready reserve time, which equals a six year commitment. Most know that they are signing for six years. If it is important to know for sure, I can check with my son who is active duty. Hope that helps.

Stop loss is a temporary fix to retain crucial military personnel on active duty beyond initial enlistment period. It's inconvenient to those affected but sometimes necessary to deal with contingencies. Under wartime scenario, the six years can be extended also. Retirees have a recall period up to the 30th anniversary of their enlistment.
I know full well, I got recalled during Desert Storm. The recall was canceled before I was to report.

But I am thinking that 2010 will shape up a bit differently due to Obama's (and Congress's) blatant disregard for what the majority of the voters (according to most polls) wants. When they piss off enough of the voters, and I think they have, the incumbent advantage might take a vacation soon.

If you are proposing bringing back the draft, you wouldn't get any argument from me. If Obama stays around much longer, this government may have to do just that. He is demoralizing the military more and more every day. It will take a few years to feel the effects of this demoraliztion. It would take a few more to reinstate the draft, thus causing a problem and likely leading to "stop loss" again, on a larger scale.

Rep. Schock took a beating on Cavuto the other day because he put pork in a bill while criticizing the Democrats massive spending. All he had to say was that he would support a bill to ban future earmarks and he probably would have gotten off the hook.
As for the terrorists, this is an unnecessary gamble that not only has political implications, but also has legal ones. The Bush administration kept the terrorists from coming onto U.S. soil in order to prevent them getting special rights that American citizens enjoy. This is a disgraceful decision and hopefully Illinois will hold Obama responsible for sending them such a wonderful Christmas gift.

There was a hostage situation in the southern Illinois prison at Pickneyville this week. SWAT team had to kill the inmate to rescue the 62 year old female prison employee he had taken hostage. What would the fall-out be if a detainee had to be killed in a similar situation? I live in Illinois and I say keep them out of the country!
This is insanity and as a citizen of Illinois I am beyond outraged. The Chicago Democrats who have a stranglehold on our state keep driving business out while paying off their donors and supporters using my money. Their grand plan, and their only plans as far as I can tell, to bring jobs to the state requires us to import fanatical terrorists who want to destroy our country and our way of life, and who will undoubtedly be granted rights equal to a US citizen or legal resident while they continue to plot future attacks. My first tour of duty was Vietnam and served numerous overseas assignments in the 36 years after that.

And the FBI alerted the military and told them they have a serious problem. The reports were provided and the system worked. Army doctors at Walter Reed knew he was nuts. Previous CO's knew he was nuts. For whatever reason, the Army dropped the ball.
Apparently Mr. Hall, our law enforcement and corrections officers are too inadequate to pass the tea-bagger litmus test. They fail, suck and generally are worthless even though most of them are ex-military and provide some of the best law enforcement in the World. The only way these law enforcement and corrections officers can possibly pass the tea-bagger litmus test is to travel back in time and have GW Bush make this decision and then, and ONLY THEN would our law enforcement and corrections officers be adequate enough to pass the tea-bagger litmus test. You list a 9/11 conspirator Zacharias Moussaoui who was tried in Virginia and the tea-baggers were quite fine with it and then he was sentenced and sent to a federal prison on American soil and these tea-baggers were fine with it. In fact, they actually celebrated it. Now the same thing is happening now with other 9/11 conspirators and the "Chicken Littles" are screaming "THE WORLD IS FALLING! THE WORLD IS FALLING!" What Obama needs to do is simply say "It was Palin's idea" and these tea-baggers would offer to give these detainees rides to Illinois.

What would the global fallout be when corrections officers are forced to kill a suspected terrorist?
No one is arguing that the corrections officers made a bad decision in Pickneyville. But suppose it was a terrorist, and not some run of the mill crook? I guarantee that there would be people claiming consipiracy theories–executing the prisoner before trial, corrections officers acting as judge, jury and executioner (remember the border patrol guys?), etc.

Readers should be aware that IL Gov. Quinn was recently exposed for having released ordinary state prisoners far ahead of their sentenced release time because of prison overcrowding and/or state underfunding….. Meanwhile, we have the underutilized state-funded Thomson prison sitting nearly empty.
People are at increased risk as a directly result of Quinn's two actions. If any of prematurely released felons OR jihadist inmates commit crimes, we will know whom to blame.
Unfortunately, I don't think our state Constitution has a recall function for governors.

We were told the trials were bring moved to NY to show the world our system of justice, although our justice system is in shambles. As for Gitmo prisoners in a supermax in IL, do all you people really have so little faith in the Bureau of Prisons to hold these low lifes? And what's so wrong about putting them on trial, thereby showing the world we are a nation of laws, not men. If we just execute these criminals (because that's what they are – they're not soldiers of a nation at war with us, just common criminals using horrific methods), aren't we being just like them? And what does doing that mean for our soldiers when they're captured? Do you really think these guys on the loose in Afghanistan/Pakistan won't say, right before they torture our guys to death, "This is for KSM, who was subjected to American execution without a trial, contrary to your own laws"? (Granted, they may well execute our guys anyway, but why give them any cover for their crime?) Don't you people believe in looking at things dispassionately and understanding the effect of what you propose, rather than just going for the immediate feel good response? But there are already tons of terrorists on American soil in America prisons and there has never been an incident involving any of them. No escapes, no deaths, no attacks, no drama, no politics. The only drama from these terrorists being created is from the Right-wing chicken littles screaming " THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING!" over phantom terrorist threats they're creating probably from watching too many Die Hard movies or something.
We're keeping them anyways. They're getting their tribunals anyways. Why not put them to use and generate revenue and create jobs. And the Chicken Littles need to watch less TV and pay more attention to how efficient and state of the art our corrections system has been when it comes to handling the terrorists we have already had for years.
