Down Under and November: Why Australia Has Democrats Worried
by Arif PanjuPay just a bit of attention to what has been going on in Australian politics the past few months and you will quickly get the sense you are reading a U.S. 2010 midterm preview. President Obama and congressional Democrats will not find solace in the many parallels between the current political climate in the United States and that unfolding Down Under. The tides have turned in Oz and its waves are set to hit U.S. shores on November 2nd.

Batter Up.
The huge swing away from the liberal Labor Party’s agenda has left Australia in the center of the Federal political spectrum, as the major parties worked towards resolving the nation’s second hung parliament in its Federal history. The deadlock ended this week. This occurrence marks a new era for federal politics in Australia―with the formation of a new government hinging on three independents, two of which finally cut a deal with Labor to give them the 76 seats needed to form a minority government, barely fending off the conservative coalition’s 74.
One thing is certain, although the Labor Party swept in 2007 (with a twenty-three seat swing from 60 to 83), Labor has managed to lose the confidence of a majority of Australians in the space of less than a year. The architects of the policy failures which brought this about through their cynicism and self-importance have received a stern message: Aussies are not interested in more government.
The parallels between the U.S. and Australian political landscapes are eye-opening.
Kevin Rudd, who was still Prime Minister when President Obama cancelled (for a second time) his trip to Australia this past June (citing the BP oil spill), has fallen from grace. The former prime minister who could do nothing wrong could now do nothing right. His approval rating sunk to 36% (from 67% just 9 months prior). Over the same time period, President Obama has also seen his numbers sink, with a recent approval rating of 45% (down from 65% in January).
The left in both countries have promoted large social programs that are unpopular. After shelving his hallmark cap-and-trade plan in the face of mounting opposition from Australian voters, Rudd was ultimately ousted from the PM post by his own deputy, Julia Gillard, just weeks before the August 21st general election. The liberal powers that be did not agree they should abandon their drive to cap and tax the entire Australian energy economy. Arrogance is contagious.
Having secured a razor-thin edge in Parliament, Labor—blinded by their belief they know what is best― will indeed try again. Here, in the U.S., the ObamaCare writing is on the wall and the number of Democrats running on their marquee legislative accomplishment is close to none. While Rudd stepped off the accelerator, Obama and Co. hit the nitrous switch and drove healthcare reform straight through all opposition, including the American voter.
The left’s approach to the challenging economy in both countries also underscores the erosion in support. Like the Obama Administration, Labor chose deficit spending, quickly eliminating the surplus left behind by former conservative Prime Minister John Howard. When Obama and congressional Democrats targeted credit card companies, Labor did the same, leading to reduced consumer credit during difficult economic times.
When Labor was not pushing spending, they pushed new taxes. In 2008 both congressional Democrats and then candidate Obama touted new taxes on oil companies’ “windfall profits.” Not to be outdone, Labor in Australia pushed a 40% “Super Profits Tax” on mining companies. The left were once again relentless in their pursuit, yet missed the mark by ignoring the effects of their policy: higher energy costs and reducing the competitive strength of its producers.
But there is more. Even after Gillard replaced Rudd, she was quick to grip the baton and, like the Obama Administration, unveiled a cash for clunkers program for Australians. Primarily determined to get 200,000 cars off of the road, Gillard noted the vehicles “guzzle a lot of petrol and they spew out a lot of pollution.” Like Obama and Democrats here in the U.S., Labor Party proponents miss a simple economic fact. Their policy ignores the hidden costs associated with destroying the economic value remaining in inexpensive, road-worthy vehicles that can transport workers and young people to work and school.
Similar to the movement in the U.S. against runaway spending and an ever expanding government, Australians began rallying around the conservatives and opposition leader Tony Abbott. Abbott led the conservatives and opposed Labor’s big government policies, launching an offensive targeting the government’s attempt to grow debt and deficits instead of cutting spending and lowering taxes.
Although Abbott fell short of becoming Australia’s new Prime Minister this week, he has been effective. Only a few weeks ago, political experts were predicting a landslide for the incumbent Gillard. But as her campaign reached its final stages in August, the conservative coalition’s economic stance—including opposing the proposed tax on the mining sector and letting private industry install a broadband network in the country—resonated with Australian voters a lot more than Gillard.
The pattern of big government is one that subsidizes problems with taxpayer money, taxing with one hand and simultaneously swiping the country’s credit card with the other. This pattern quickly lost traction in the U.K (who chose conservative David Cameron) and Australia (who marginalized Labor by strengthening conservatives).
The U.S. voter is on deck. Democrats should be concerned. Less than one-year ago, the results of the recent U.K. and Australian elections would have seemed improbable. The pattern is difficult to ignore. Voters in both countries have chosen capitalism and limited government over the left’s social engineering and big spending. Batter up, the world knows Americans like to hit it out of the park.

The handwriting is on the wall. The Left has been weighed, measured, and found wanting. November can't come soon enough.
Seems the Aussies have awakened as are the Americans to the garbage of socialism. Make it so on 2 Nov. Vote the bums out.
I think if anything good came from the total disaster on the hill, ….is the awakening of the American people.
The important thing to remember though, is make sure people we know, and ourselves don't fall back to sleep.
The left is comprised of those that rarely held a job yet think they know all the answers to America's problems.Kind of like in days of old when the hunters and gatherers were out growing and hunting the metrosexuals of the time sat around the campfire deciding how and when the food would be distributed. Same as today.
"…the world knows Americans like to hit it out of the park."
Why yes we do, I'm actually looking forward to slowly running the bases while the crowd gives us a
STANDING 'O'.
But until that time comes, it's WORK, WORK WORK!
.
the light of day has been shown on the dilletante Rudd…
He IS their Obama. His Progressive hot button is, of course, 'climate change' (BTW, scientists now say the loss of polar ice has been overstated by a power of 2- ooops!) and the Aussies bought into it for 'feel good' reasons. That, and the anger at Bush for Iraq/Afghanistan (ginned up by the left wing media) resulted in Rudd's victory.
Now the buyer's remorse sets in…
It's like a parallel universe … albeit Australian progressives take their economy and freedoms down the toilet in a clockwise motion.
Let freedom ring, in Australia too!
Tyranny, from any government and with any kind of accent is tyranny we do not want, or need.

Thought provoking article.
Off Topic, but I have been made aware of something very huge in the Healthcare Reform bill.
Gold Coin Sellers Angered by New Tax Law

I know why they would want to do this. Have you ever heard of a VAT Tax?
All great change in America begins at the dinner table.
Ronald Reagan
BHO's team is going down!
I find it ironic that Big Peace has an article very favorable to Tony Blair. Everyone knows that Tony Blair was a member of the Conservative Party in Great Britain. No, he was a member of the Labor Party. Really? Never mind.
Dems aren't worried about Aus, they are worried about us.
Wow. Isn't that ironic. Don't you think?
Wasn't that cause for failure of one of Britan's first settlements in the Colonies. If memory serves, there were more non productive drones than effective workers.
" Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard held a media conference in Canberra on Monday, declaring that an end to the country’s political deadlock may take some time."
"Speaking about the election result, Mr Katter declared the days of the two-party system (the dominance of Labor and Liberal governments) “over”.

People want less government… you can't say it any simpler than that!
Yes, there's people who have medical problems that want 'free' health care and people who just don't want to work, but still want 3 flat screen TVs and a house for free… sorry. That's NOT what the USA is about, nor is it what being a republic is about. There's plenty of charity out there to help those in need. The Fed gov is NOT supposed to do these things, its not supposed to mandate redistribution! If you want that, move to Venezuela … Otherwise, suck it up.
Democrats believe people do not like being free.
The people will always win.
Freedom is the most important thing.
….The Anglosphere ain't dead yet……put another shrimp (and shrinking Liberals) on the barbie…..
I agree with you on that! Well said!
Down under is about to happen all over.
Personally, I think election 2010 is going to be a landslide. I think it will be a precursor to Election 2012, which will be a tsunami. With that being duly noted, I think we ought be ever vigilant, and guard against being too cocky, or grow complacent. We must hold everyone's feet to the fire. It is time for those running for office to "open the kimono". We need to know who they are, and what they stand for.
No more RINOs. No more career politicians like John McCain (although Arizona is stuck with him). No more Lindsey Grahams, or Olympia Snowes, or Arlen Spinchters. Pull the handle, and flush them all.
Will this come without a fierce battle? No. It will last for generations, as the Progressives have a hundred year head start on US.
Amen.
The facts never lie, just liberals. Liberal gov't policies using Keynes as a convenient idiot have decimated national economies all over the globe. Liberal moral relativism has led to the degradation of core values. The policies are that of despair. Their whole message is, "You are weak, pathetic and powerless. You must let the gov't take care of you because you are incapable". That's SOME message. Then they create generations of dependents who CAN"T break free because of gov't imposed obstacles. They get the press and academia to echo their propaganda of despair and failure. Lower your standards, lower your expectations, don't work hard, it's not worth it, etc. Who in the hell thought this would ever work as national policy ?!??!?! Surprise surprise when the nations fall to pieces with high crime, high unemployment, high drug addicition, lower academic success, no core families, etc. etc. etc. It's ALL a refelction of the entire liberal outlook!
Liberlaism – destroying nations for centuries
Also, based on the latest polls; no more Sharron Angles and Rand Pauls.
People have finally begun to wake up and realize that Progressivism is a Ponzi scheme and we are out of other people's money. It's going to take decades to wean the lazy and the indigent from the teat of big government, but at least we are starting. Hopefully before it's too late.
Gotta love those Aussies!

Here in Britain it seems that every conservative gov comes to power with the challenge of cleaning up a socialist labor screw-up. We have an astronomical budget deficit, an exploding (literally) community of new Muslim arrivals and less personal freedoms than ever after Labor imposed it's PC thought regulation on every conceivable sphere of life.
"and the Aussies bought into it for 'feel good' reasons"
Not to mention algore's threat that sea levels would rise by twenty feet (or whatever his drivel was).
Someone told me Crocodile Dundee (Paul Hogan) owes the Australian government 100 million dollars in back taxes I dont know how that can be when all he ever did here was make one moderatly succesful movie and a few TV commercals what do they have there a 500 % tax rate?
Don't want to bring the mood down, but the 'Pubbies under President Bush hold (a distant) second place to the Democrats under Obama in "growing government." They're going to be the senior Republicans in the House and Senate.
I don't see them presenting any programs for reducing the size or even slowing the rate of government growth. It would be nice to hear about repealing ObamaCare, shutting down the NLRB, the Dept. of Education, BATFE, etc. But that isn't what I'm hearing.
Unless the Tea Parties remain persistent and vigilent, it will be a case of "meet the new boss, same as the old boss."
Funny how conservatives tend to be nice those who help them, as opposed to tossing them under the bus, like certain other regimes I can think of…
Every closet commie must go !!
In Australia, 12 months after gun owners were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:
- Assaults are up 8.6 percent.
- Homicides are up 3.2 percent.
- Armed robberies are up 44 percent.
- Homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.
The law-abiding citizens turned in their guns and the criminals did not, criminals still possess their guns!
Figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, criminals are now guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased after such monumental effort, and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns.
If you have any doubts about gun control… http://usataxpayer.org/?0079012351
That's New LABOUR Party, smart guy.
Socialist worldwide are feeling the heat of colossal failure.
Unfortunately I have a co-worker in Australian. Younger guy, 31 I think. He no longer speaks to me because I was excited that Australia looked to be coming to her senses. He wanted an explanation and I told, pretty much what the author above said and he said Australia needed to pass cap and crap to protect the environment and that Julia over stepped her bounds and Rudd had been doing a fine job. What is it with ignorant IT people? I don't get it. I am IT and I am conservative. Any other serious nerd IT people out there that are conservative?
whoooooooa!!! com'on folks…you do know that the average american voter is a dumbass…right? they walk into the votin' booth and their brain shuts off…the guy in office gave them aaaaah hmmmm mmmmmm….
sumpin' else to 'member…if they are union or a member of acorn they get 3 votes…if they belong to both 14 votes and if they are dead acorn union members you just may as well stay at home and watch your "stories" on tv…you can't compete…
I know this is off topic, but check this painting out, VERY NICE!!!

I've noticed socialists never introduce a "windfall losses tax break."
Yadda, yadda, yadda… In 2 to 4 years the American people will fall back asleep and the democrats will be back in charge again. In the meantime, the republicans won't really repeal but a fraction of the latest government bloat and will continue to expand the federal budget and add to government regulation. It will look like one step back as we still take two steps forward to a socialist worker's paradise.
Getting rid of democrats may be the first steps, but getting rid of most republicans has to be the second step or it's all meaningless. Look at history. Democrats create all sorts of crazy regulations, taxes and add hundreds of billions to the budget. The the pendulum swings and republicans create all sorts of crazy regulations, taxes, and add hundreds of billions to the federal budget. They just do it slightly less than the democrats, but they do it too.
All the while, we slip further down the slope away from the nation of liberty and limited government that we were supposed to have. This acticle makes for nice talk and all, but it supposes that a change in political parties is some great watershed that will finally change or fix everything. History simply does not support that kind of blind optimism. As voters, we can't be satisfied with replacing a democrat majority. A republican majority will not be an answer. The slide to the bottom will just slow down a little. Voters need to go after socialist republicans with the same fervor as the democrats. Otherwise, the tea party thing, the voter uprising, so on and so forth, will have been a flash in the pan waste of our time.
The first Jamestown governing philosophy gave everyone an equal share of what the colony held in common. In short, it was a collective. Because they could all count on being fed at the end of the day (until the food ran out and they starved), none of them spent their very valuable time growing or gathering new food. The new governor declared that if you didn't work, you didn't eat. That saved the colony, but it didn't actually thrive until the colonists were given property rights over what they produced including the ability to sell their surplus for profit.
Maybe that's because Blair's foreign policy stance was friendly to ours?
Whatever his domestic agenda was, it was the foreign policy side that spoke to Americans. Look at Lieberman – he supported the foreign policy agenda even though his stance on most everything else ran counter to what conservatives tend to believe. It bought him a measure of goodwill.
TAXINGCHARLOTTE…are you saying what I think you're saying????…..POLITICIANS ARE SCUM!?!?!? good on ya…I'm just glad my social security is safe, got my first check this week….aah whaaaaa???? it did whaaaa??? rubber??? bounced??? aaaaaagh!!!!!!
Mr. Panju hit about all of the issues in the Aussie elections.
I paid a great deal of interest to them (I was predicting that Tony Abbott would be their new PM) but the way that it fell will probably benefit him and the Liberal/Nationals Coalition (the conservatives down under) if they just wait for the proto-communist government of Julia Gillard to crumble.
There are already rumblings that deep divisions are surfacing (it's was only formed yesterday) and that they Aussies may be force to head back to the polls (it's possible that they'd go back even prior to our own November polls).
It has been fascinating to watch how it unfolded down under and how it is shaping up for the Democrats and some very pro-establishment Republicans here.
It's going to be fun! A lot of fun!
Surfs up!
Yeah. But, down in Aussie, it is spelled 'Labor'.
Harry – they are worried about what happened in Australia. In fact, they should be worried about the 'tide of conservatism' that has been sweeping the globe.
Conservatives have rolled in Europe and Australia and are coming to America in November.
Sharron Angle will send Harry Reid into the group of 'losing incumbents' and the 'unemployment line' in November.
I wonder if the Labor Party folks thought this would blow over too……………..
That's impossible! Your SS check could not have bounced! Obama says we still have 50 billion more that we can give to unions that will put the money directly into DNC accounts. Besides, they just printed more money last week. I know there is more around here somewhere… Give me a sec, I'll go look…
butt I'm not union or acorn eligible…I was a bidniss owner….(sniffle sniffle)
Ah 'hope' you are right brother
You are right, it is Labour in England. However, in the United States, it is Labor. As a result, in many articles in the U.S., either is correct.
Well, I followed the elections in Australia with great interest. Considering the short time-frame of the election there, Tony Abbott pulled off a stunning result and just about pulled off a miracle.

My husband is an IT guy and conservative, and he also doesn't understand how so many IT people are liberal. He said they all moaned and groaned about privacy invasions and power overreaches by the Bush admin but now are silent on anything Obama does which is more than even Bush.
One of my co-workers has one of those bumper stickers referring to that Polar Bear dying video from a while back. When I saw that, I almost burst out laughing. They can't really create an infrastructure that runs an entire corporation and then really buy into the Global Warming theory. Maybe so much is channeled into nerdiness the rest of the brain is mush and susceptible to garbage intake? I have no idea it's a mystery to me.
Love Australia, though they are a little lefty as a rule.
But they're waking up, and as I watched the lefty coup unfold, I was pleasantly surprised at the conservative push back. Obama is alone in the world, which has virtually all gone conservative. Even Castro says socialism doesn't work.
.
LOL. Nice try. You made a mistake. That's all. "Labour" is a proper noun. You can't change it suit conventions. Just admit you made a mistake and move on.
You are a useful idiots though, so admitting mistakes is not in your nature.
This is OT, but a tad of hopeful news: I've seen a few bumper stickers (whose owners are Hispanic): "Obamanos–Si Se Puede!". Looks like another of Obooby's voting bases is going bye-bye.
My bro is one.
No matter, according to RealClearPolitics, the count in the House is 206 to 193, Republican. It's going to be hard to be YOU after the November elections, Sparky!
Ooh, I've got some bad news for you–"Obamanos" is a pro-Obama bumper sticker. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeannie-ralston/mex...
OK, I thought it was a play on the worst sense of "vamanos", as in GTFO. Ooops. My bad.
