Stimulus Springs Eternal: Building Roads In Upscale Illinois Neighborhoods
by Andrew MarcusWe recently stumbled across a Stimulus construction sign in an upscale neighborhood on the North Shore of Chicago. Recovery.gov describes the project as follows:
ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
Highway Infrastructure Investment Grant: Urbanized Areas over 200K PopulationAward Amount: $1,320,000
Reported Jobs: 4.66
We produced a short video asking the question: Does the upscale suburb of Evanston really need the hard-earned tax dollars of people from other states across the union in order to (re)build her local roads?
The city of Evanston should write thank you notes to the legislatures of each of the other 57 states, thanking them for the new road.

Viva La Barack…
Oh,my! How unseemly and embarrassing! This is the moral equivalent of being "pants"ed. I like it.
If they need my tax dollars to murder babies, then they need my tax dollars to pave roads so the shocks of the residents Mercedes and BMWs don't wear out.
Your 1987 Toyota already has shot shocks? Take the bus and pay your tax bill.
I'm sure that Michael Moore will make his next movie about all of the waste fraud and abuse in the stimulus package………lol
People! $1.32 MILLION to create 4.66 jobs.
That right there sums up the ENTIRE Stimulus Spending. History will show that the half-arsed manner in which this administration spent our dollars was the single most incompetent move by any administration at any time.
My garbage collector could do a better job that the buffoons we have in DC right now. (no offensive to garbage collectors everywhere).
I kid you not , near me, these signs are within 1 block from homes that cost in excess of 3 million each. I have always wondered about this. The bases of the signs are sandbagged to hold them up.
Are you dumbasses too ignorant to realize everyone gets to use this road? Yep even those just passing through who might save money, gas, wear and tear, and time because of this road.
God you people are stupid.
To add a little topper to my example below , nobody passes through, you must turn around and go past the sign again to get on your way out. Nobody passing through.
This video made me laugh first, then it made me angry! I tell my wife all the time that I would love to do some research on the ghost congressional districts that received stimulus money…it would be this generations "Watergate"
We must try and understand that the dispersal 700 billion dollars is not going to be an easy task,….
A.) the money has to be spread out to as many locations throughout the country as possible,….. and,…..
B.) it has to garner enough gullible votes,…. and,…….
C.) union jobs must be created,…..and finally,…..
D.) the money has to be all spent before the November elections.
This will be Obama's greatest accomplishment as president.
I pray God it is his last.
If the roads need repaired, the roads need repaired, I'm not going to play the class envy game. Now if there is a neighborhood association that has taken financial resposibility for the roads, or if they are repaving because they could not possibly deal with the eyesore of a couple of patched potholes, then I have an issue. What is the point of pointing out manicured lawns and trimmed hedges. I am not rich and my lawn is manicured and I'll admit the bushes need trimmed, but I have no problem with affluent people. I hope to be one. Now I am sure that a few politically connected people make it easier to get attention and doubt the cost/benefit analysis would wash out, but welcome to the real world. But then again cost to the politician $0 (it is the taxpayers money)/benefit=thousands of dollars in contributions from some of the richest residents on Chicago.
How about fixing the highways that most people actually use? Surely they get more use and would require more frequent repairs. Another thing is that in neighborhoods like that, they are usually fenced in-making the land private.
That's a big stretch – I doubt the people you think you support would go anywhere near that neighborhood. They'd probably be stopped by the cops if they were driving around there. The big money Dems that live in that neighborhood don't want the likes of the great unwashed ogling their mansions.
God you liberals are racists.
You need to start compiling these from around the country, do a longer video… Go viral..
Obama is breaking us and that is the plan. "The end justifies the means", remember?
The problem is you fail to realize that the building and maintaining anything except interstates is not the responsiblity of the federal government. Before you or any of your type spout off about grants and what-nots given specifically for states to maintain their roads; those laws should have never been legislated or signed as they fall out of the scope of what the federal govrnment is suppose to cover. Aside from all of this if a city/county/state want to improve their roads cut spending or raise taxes.
Federal tax $$$$$$ to fix a municipal road?
Is that a Federal Highway winding through toney Evanston? Yes? No?
I don't see giant gas stations and Church's Chicken joints, do you?
Why are the Feds involved in a city matter?
…now you know why it is called Soviet Evanistan………
quid pro quo, yes pundits and polititians keep saying that is how it is done, and why many with hope for change voted for hope and change, and all they got was ubersame.
Excuse me, but it's NOT my responsibility to work my butt off and get my butt Taxes off, to PAY For roads in ANOTHER state. Roads are a STATE (or City/County) area, NOT THE FED.
Starting immediately – every state should KEEP their OWN gas tax, road tax, whatever tax from transportation, and NOT send it to D.C. to then "be sent back" – with a bunch of strings attached. As was said – way back when, this type of crud should've been nipped.
I saw the same sign on a road while on St. Thomas (U.S.V.I.) last month. Didn't see anyone working though.
they must've figured out Evanston's fair share of stimulus by taking the difference btwn. the avg. annual income and home value. heaven forbid the range rover should get dirty. i would be willing to forgive if they used all their Obama signs to repave the road.
I've seen this same sign posted in an upscale neighborhood in Long Beach CA. ( on a street that needed no repair) The job has been completed for months and yet the sign is still posted to remind us how hard Barry is working to "create" jobs…Yeah Right!!
Most are doing the work we already paid taxes to our state dept's of transportation to do, thank god for springtime and all the growth of plants weeds and trees that will jumpstart the economy.
Oh, all you whiney people…I know you all just want a free red brick driveway, too. Was it a yellow brick road that that gal in Wizard of Oz went down? By the way. do wonder if Tim Burton is upset at the competition over Obamacare at the same time his version of "Wizard of Oz" comes out?
I was wondering the same thing… what the hell is a .66 job creation. It should be either 4 or 5 jobs, not 4.66. These folks are softheads.
no, you sir are the idiot here. the gasoline you buy is taxed by the local community, county, state, and federal government. all of those taxes, are more than triple the profit the oil company even makes on that gas. those taxes are collected to fix the roads a dumbass like you drive on. so where is all the money this town, county, and state collected? just like how illinois schools are broke, but we installed all kinds of gaming "for the children", where is all of that money? next time you use the word ignorant, be sure to look in the mirror and point to the dumbass in the mirror, and call him, i mean you ignorant.
no, the city of Evanston does not need the money of other states…
But here in Obamanation, Illinois, they'll gladly take it. Shameless mooches that they are, addicted to big spending and low property taxes, you have to get the money somewhere.
it may as well be YOU…
No kidding, have you even been on the highways and interstate between Oklahoma and Arkansas, its freaking horrible. And I drive out that way atleast twice a year back and forth.
As for the jobs, that is just pathetic. Over a million dollars spend, and only got 4 jobs. On top of that, the road is empty.
When did we start working for the politicians. I always thought that they worked for us? You are right, bailout+slush fund… almost petty cash!
In my state the avg. cost of fixing one pot hole is $900, and you should see the quality of the work being done, the private sector could never compete<sarc>, it reminds me of Obama rationalizing Obamacare by saying the govt. is going to compete with the private sector and the consumers will benefit. When has the govt. ever done something at a lower cost, more efficiently and a higher quality than a private company in any field.
Right after his movie about how much he eats…
If we had working journalists, that would have happened. The few actual journalists are overwhelmed with stories falling in their laps by this criminal administration!
I'd only be stupid if I thought you could change and then wasted my time trying to get you to understand how lame your baited comments are.
Good luck mr. troll.
I'd actually like to see Obama have several great achievements, like win in Iraq and Afghanistan, veto this monstrosity of a healthcare bill, slash spending, reduce taxes and get rid of a lot of this business-killing legislation. But….as I was told by a wise chief back in my navy days, "Wish in one hand, sh!t in the other and see which one fills up first." lol
they are probably part-time jobs
Sandbagged. I like irony.
They were union. Taking a break. A long one.
When we finally see where the money went–we are going to be beyond angry. Wealth redistribution is happening right now. It's the dirty secret behind the "lost" cash. I don't even know where to start, or I would do some snooping around myself.
I would be willing to bet, the roads need to be repaired first near some big dem donators' homes first!
It seems like the State of Illinois had to kick in $707,135 bucks in order to get the $1.32 million federal money.
For a project to get federal money, it has to be started as a federal project and with environmental permits getting harder and and more expensive to get, projects like this, where it's just a simple road overlay is what the Stimulus money is being used for. Any work that disturbs native ground is probably still having the paperwork approved by some stupid governemnt flunkie.
So, in an effort to look like they are spending the money, this is the kind of project you get. Did anyone expect somethign different from the clowns running the WH?
A shovel ready project cannot have stimulus funding unless it started under the federal permit process, which typically is only done at the start highway level. But even then, it takes several years to develop a project.
I am still laughing at your post. You don't know why and that makes it even funnier.
Sorry. You are probably very young or don't pay taxes, but ignorance is no excuse for the law. (I just quoted a very, very old saying which partly means that you should know about which you speak in legal matters.)
Here's a partial quote from another poster on this page which may help. I was just going to tell you where the post was, but this is idiot proof.
"…the federal government has no authority to tax us to repave that road in the first place …" (Lyndsy Simon)

Here's the BEST part. Illinois already pays 57.4 cents a gallon in motor fueld tax, fifth highest in the nation.
So….we pay the government to keep up our roads, and we get to pay AGAIN in the name of "stimulus." Actually, our grandkids will pay for these projects, with interest.
Ain't it great?
As a historical note, Gov Blago is on tape hitting up the cement contractor's association for a donation in exchange for some new projects.
Stop Socialism, Stop Obama.
TIME OUT!!!!!! I agree Evanston is probably not the best place to spend stimulus money. You are way out of line when you say "LOW TAXES" . You are an absolute moron to say that about any community in any part of Illinois. I am here and I see people getting taxed out of there houses, with property taxes rising while values are decreasing, and the government is blaming banks. Even those with fixed rate mortgages payments are going up only due to rising property taxes, and the gov is always blaming the banks. Itas a fucking joke.
I thought Vibes were supposed to , er , um vibe no????
[...] H/t to video creator and awesome conservative Founding Bloggers, via the equally awesome Big Government. [...]
Who does his hair?
So, what's the point? Should all of the stimulus money go to poor areas? Why not give the money back to the communities who payed most of the taxes in the first place?
Simply pathetic. I doubt NObama will be emarassed tho…. His head is too big to be affected by anything so trivial.
Say bye-bye for a while. Idiot.
slow down there, amigo…
Everything is relative- in Cook County taxes are relatively low compared with other parts of the country in our group one of us has a $220,000 condo with taxes @$2100 a year. In New Jersey it would be triple that. So, what was meant is that the mooch class here wants it both ways- not that you aren't being taxed to death.
Clear?
Rattles not vibrate, I'm talking cars, not aides.

Don't know where you are getting your data from there dcase,…but,…you must realize that,….
Obama, up to now, is going out of his way to make sure he is not paying favoritism with ILL.
Personally I want it that way, this gives me license to lean on this clown and his spending.
As far taxes goes, maybe we may not be #1 here in ILL,…… but I would surely,………
trade places with the vast majority of the 50.
The USA will have no economy, but a great brand new re-paved road system….insanity has no limits.
As I have said all along, the stimulus became the largest political slush fund that could ever be imagined for a President.
Paying back for all of the support.
Our money, and our grandchildren's money, being so fraudulently spent!!
Paving the road to He!!.
Haters, Mercedes are fine machines which cost alot, it's not like my used Vibe which rattles. Next you will want senators not to come out of office Millionares with Bahamian vacation homes.
I live in Evanston. It's Jan Schakowsky's district. THAT's the reason the funds were allocated.
Bingo !

evanston voted overwhelmingly for obama.
evanston is home to northwestern university, where bernadine dohrn, wife of bill ayers, is director of the children and family justice center. as a convicted felon, she cannot get a law license. but its OK to be an associate professor.
whose house is in the video? if you have the address, look it up at the cook county assessor's website
http://cookcountyassessor.com/Property_Search/Pro...
it probably belongs to a big obama donor.
The problem isn't so much that it is going to a wealthy locale, but that the federal government has no authority to tax us to repave that road in the first place – or are you going to maintain that this is a "postal road'?
The fact that they obviously don't have trouble collecting enough taxes to pave their own streets just makes it more offensive.
I live in Illinois. Every time I see one of those signs I think to myself, "Shouldn't that sign read "PAID FOR BY YOUR TAX DOLLARS"?
An open flood gate of fiscal plundering. Every state, every city across America immediately went to their collective wish lists of “how to fund-or-should we fund” Pet Projects that their own communities would not or could not pay for; and rushed their paperwork in to steal as much money as they can before the American people wake up and realize they’ve been financially raped. Unprecedented, unfettered greed and corruption bordering on insanity… will result in unimaginable consequences for our children. But then again 4 or 5 people kept their jobs so, we’re good right?
Most American's now agree that the "Stimulus" was a total failure. However, what's with the class warfare? You have something against people that actually PAY taxes getting some of their money back? I would have expected this type of video on Huffpo. BTW, have you ever driven through Evanston? Some parts of the city would make Detroit look good. My guess is that they couldn't justify repaving the road only in the areas of the city that "needed" it.
Since when are there 57 states?
the data is from personal experience; as said one of the team lives in Crook County and has the above mentioned property and tax bill. If he moved across the street to Lake County his taxes would double. So the locals are used to 'relatively' low taxes coupled with huge deficit spending. Illinois as a whole is in tragic shape.
Make sense?
Hola. Gran trabajo diseño. No me esperaba esto en un miércoles. Este es un gran post historia. Gracias!
