Progressives Speak Out On Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
December 18, 2009 5:07 pm ET by MJ RosenbergThis week there was new evidence that mainstream progressives are confronting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. After years of silence on the issue, progressives are coming around to understanding that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not just a “Jewish” or “Muslim” issue but one that affects all Americans.
We have to jump in here for a moment to point out that the conflict is exactly a “Jewish” and “Muslim” issue. Because of the Muslim concepts of Jihad, Infidels, and Dhimmitude, an uncountable number of Muslims feel humiliated by the reality of Jewish self determination on what they consider to be “Muslim land.” They really don’t like that a group of Judeo-Christian infidels from the US help support the Jew infidels of Israel. They have vowed to recognize no boundary in their depravity as they relentlessly drive for their final solution to this Infidel transgression.
It would be more honest to have a debate as to whether the Islamists will stop hating us if we stop supporting the Israeli Jew Infidels, but attempting to portray the conflict as anything other than as described above is either naive or dishonest. We leave it to you to determine which applies best to the Media Matters Mafia.
Now back to our regularly scheduled bias:
It was reported on Wednesday that Israel Policy Forum, where I worked for a decade before coming to Media Matters Action Network, is moving into the Center for American Progress, the progressive think-tank.
Israel Policy Forum was established in 1993 at the behest of then Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin because he did not trust the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) to support his efforts at achieving peace with the Palestinians. He had a particular aversion to Steve Rosen, AIPAC’s director of policy, who was (and is) an ultra-hawk and actually had the clout to thwart Rabin in Washington. (Not anymore. Rosen was indicted under the Espionage Act – charges were later dropped – and AIPAC fired him).
In any case, Rabin directed his American friends to support IPF, which promoted the peace process even during the dark years of the Bush administration when the United States gave Israel a blank check (literally and figuratively) to do whatever it wanted whenever it wanted.
IPF’s alliance with CAP follows my move from IPF to Media Matters Action, which is dedicated to combating the influence of the organized right by rebutting their myths with facts. Like CAP, Media Matters Action wants to move the Israeli-Palestinian issue from a corner of the political universe to its center.
Traditionally, American liberals and progressives have looked the other way on Israel-Palestine out of fear of antagonizing the status quo lobby (not just AIPAC, but other organizations associated with it). Liberals and progressives, who are outspoken about alleged crimes committed by the US forces in Iraq or Afghanistan, rush to the unquestioning defense of Israel’s conduct in the West Bank, Lebanon, Gaza or anywhere else.
You see, Israel is just as bad as the racist imperialist crime committing US, and otherwise reasonable Progressives are cowards in the face of the all powerful Jewish lobby.
For instance, just last month, Congress passed a resolution on war crimes in Gaza.
Did Congress condemn Israel for its disproportionate use of force (1400 Palestinians killed including 320 children vs. 13 Israelis)?
Speaking of the “disproportionate use of force” that Progressives and Islamists push as a regular talking point against Israel, let’s just examine the logic behind the idea. How many Israeli Jews have to fall victim to the Jihad before they are allowed to fight back? If there are 1000 terrorists, do the Jews have to wait until 1000 of their own are slaughtered before they can act?
Nope. On the contrary, the House condemned the distinguished Justice Richard Goldstone, who wrote the United Nation’s report on Gaza, for daring to criticize Israel’s conduct. It called on the Obama administration to do everything it could to suppress the United Nations report! Only 36 representatives voted “no.”
Nor are the liberals who voted for the resolution (or the dozens of other one-sided resolutions which pass every year) embarrassed by their votes. They believe that shutting up and going along with the lobby is good politics. As I learned during 20 years on Capitol Hill, Members of Congress think that most liberals and progressives are indifferent to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but the ones who do care (often donors) are hawks.
That may be changing now. J Street is organizing the majority of the Jewish community which, believe it or not, actually supports negotiations and not the status quo. And Media Matters Action and CAP are going to keep their followers (most of the progressive community) up to date on what is actually going on in Washington.
Can’t wait!
After all, if liberal and progressive voters know that their beloved senator or representative – who is so progressive on everything else – is an uber-hawk on Israel, the legislator might think twice about being a rubber stamp for the Likud party.
I am not criticizing the Republicans or the right in general. Their support for horrific humanitarian disasters like the Gaza war fits in with their hawkish, belligerent worldview view. Accordingly, they aren’t hypocrites. That label belongs to the progressives who exempt Israel from standards they apply everywhere else.
Bottom line, supporting the status quo is bad for America and it’s bad for Israel. Supporting vigorous US diplomacy to end the occupation and establish a Palestinian state not only helps secure Israel, it helps secure our own country from the blowback that could be produced by the fury our policies are creating worldwide.

This is disgusting. Absolutely no recognition of Jihad, Dhimmitude, and the racist Islamist concept of the Infidel. Nope, ignore all that and blame the Jews who are the biggest targets of this genocidal movement.
Irony abounds as well in Rosenberg’s last comments, because it is the hypocritical Progressive movement who only demands equal rights from people in Western countries, with nary a word about the plight of women and minorities in most Muslim societies. Genital mutilation and sexual slavery get a total pass from the Progressives, yet defending your nation from persistent terrorist and rocket attack is an unacceptable evil which must be fought in “proportion” if at all.
That last paragraph might be the most reveling though. Watch your back Israel. The Progressive movement will feed you to the terrorist crocodiles in a heartbeat if they think it would prevent the crocs from eating them. Of course, the crocs plans to eat everyone eventually.

Once again, Its refreshing to see my own people, (jews), stand side by side with their islamist brothers over their true brothers the Israelis. I wish we could have a Moses, at Mt. Sinai, moment where we could say all who stand with G-d move away, only to watch the MJ rosenbergs, Axelrods, Weiners, Emmauels etc. of this world fall into the pit of hell. I guess for these people the "never again" slogan of the jewish people has kind of become "never again, unless it means we have to stand up for our selves"slogan. This was an article begging to be written. Your diligence in digging up this information, and your clarity and passion in presenting it here, are laudable.
These people are insane. There is no other answer. When these "progressives" begin thinking, they must first put on blinders, and then contort the thinking into a pretzel shape. Their concepts are amazing, and I don't mean that in a good way. Measured response? Measured response to an enemy who is sworn to annihilate you? It would be laughable if it weren't such a damned tragedy.

I am an atheist who supports Israel, so the Biblical injunctions are not a part of my mindset. I am against religion, but not against religious people. To me, they are some of our best and brightest.

It seems like that to be true. But, I can tell you, as an American Jew, we are not all like that. Berny Goldberg, Dick Morris, Mark levin, Michael Savage and Kantor from Virginia are all strong conservatives. The interesting point is that the orthodox tend to be conservative and the reform tend to be communists.

All I want from a candidate is honesty and a serious attempt to live up to his/her oath of office. Well, if Israel strikes first and takes out Iran's nuclear sites, Iran will attack the oil fields in all of the surrounding countries cutting off the oil supply line to the rest of the world (which they have already said they would do) and you and I and eveyone else pays $5+ a gallon for our precious gasoline.

Its my belief that many American Jews are liberal/progressives first and Jews second. It doesn't make sense to me, but many Jewish friends are dyed in the wool liberals to the extreme. On top of history, we have a democratic state that has taken a barren piece of land that the Europeans bequeathed to them (apparently to get the Jews out of their hair) and turned it into a functioning nation. They are surrounded by and occasionally attacked by a group of dysfunctional Muslim states and pseudo-states (Hamas, Hezbollah) who wish only to slit the throat of every last Israeli.
