Big Government Media: CRA For News Organizations?
by Andrew MarcusReading this account of discussions at the “U.S. Federal Trade Commission workshop on the future of journalism in the Internet age,” it appears “legacy media” might just slash and burn the First Amendment, shredding it to pieces on their journey to statist organ status.

In their desperation to stay alive, as newspapers and other legacy channels of distribution collapse, surviving publishers will maneuver themselves for prime suckling positions on the public teat. The keepers of the teat appear willing to enable the feast.
Federal and state officials this year have explored how the government might play a role in helping ease the financial travails of news organizations. Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D., Md.) this spring proposed a bill that would allow newspapers to operate as tax-exempt institutions. [MORE - WSJ]
“Public” money comes with a labyrinth of exponentially multiplying political strings attached. Just ask GM, AIG, and BofA.
If news organizations go 501(c)(3), will they be subject to the same restrictions on political activity as the churches?
No matter, the only way they will be allowed to stay anchored to the public teat is if they agree to have their testicles removed, and placed in a jar, on a stool, in the corner.
There will be a host of restrictions placed on these future state organs:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has asked the Department of Justice to consider a broad range of market factors in antitrust reviews, a step that could help clear a path for mergers of struggling papers. Congress has held several hearings about the financial challenges facing the industry. [MORE - WSJ]
Can you say Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) for news organizations? How much do you want to bet newspapers are going to have to meet specific hiring guidelines based strictly on race and gender quotas?
Who has time for trivialities like merit when there’s political correctness to be suffered?
The editorial and executive boards of publicly supported “news” outlets will be chosen by the public in the form of local ‘citizen news and information committees’.
Anyone want to guess who will control these local committees, and thus be empowered to grade the merger worthiness of news organizations? If you guess anything other than community organizations, you only get your news from the New York Times.
Under this scenario, the Federal government would necessarily lay down a smothering blanket of regulation on the world of publishing, defining and thus restricting the “how” and the “what” of news reporting, journalism, and editorial opinion making.
The government will have to do these things in order to define their new working relationship with the publicly controlled-supported entities. Or is the Federal government going to spend our tax dollars on failed businesses without a peep of legislation on the matter? That wouldn’t be very progressive.
Consider for a moment, the combination of whatever legislation they are brewing up in the meeting linked above, and McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It doesn’t take much of an imagination to envision a future where the government holds tremendous sway over defining what is “political speech”, who may engage in political speech, how they may engage in it, and when.
Will you need a registered license to engage in “political speech” during election cycles? What is an election cycle when you are engaged in a “permanent campaign?”
The end result will be a vast new regime of communications regulations which will not serve the long term interests of the First Amendment. To the contrary, as with the McCain-Feingold “campaign reform” law, the First Amendment will be under direct assault.

"Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom . . . of the press . . . ." U.S. Const. amend. I. According to this article, Congress is seeking to make a law abridging the freedom of the press. Has Maryland's back bencher of a Senator, Ben Cardin, ever read the U.S. Constitution?
I want on the board to control the salaries of MSM editors and reporters. Maybe we should pay them by the documented neutral paragraph reported.

1A will become the target of attacks just like the 2A!!! Words can sting just as bad as a bullet…

Yeah, because there's just so much skill and raw talent in the newspaper biz right now, and it would be a shame to lose it. While I dislike these rules being imposed on anyone, I find it ironic that the media is one of the least diverse (searching for cite on that assertion) industries in the US yet one of the biggest cheerleaders of affirmative action, minority contracts bidding, and hiring quotas. Make them play by their own rules and see how they like them.
GIVE UP NOW!!! RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!!!! BECOME PART OF THE COLLECTIVE!!!
The media is already in the sack with the libs, this move would just make it official. Watch dogs they are not. Objectivity is merely a quaint notion that they continue to try and hide behind. Journalistic Integrity is an oxymoron now of greater magnitude than Military Intelligence. Scientific results are no longer absolutes but rather subject to 'consensus'. The Ivory Towers of our educational system are built upon sludge and slush funds, while Tenure is job security for mediocrity.
WELCOME TO OBAMA'S AMERIKA!!!!
Perhaps someone could suggest a business model where employees actually investigate the events of the day, and then write up and pass on their findings. When an outlet like the NYT or WaPo devotes more space to a one car accident arising from some golfer's fight with his wife than they do on the revelation of long term, systematic manipulation of data in an attempt to change world-wide economies, I think the time has come for alternative outlets. If they want to survive, let them produce a product people actually want to read.
iT IS NOT RIGHT TO ALLOW THE PUBLIC TO KNOW ABOUT THINGS THAT ONLY SERVE TO DISTURB THEM. THIS WILL PROTECT US FROM ALL THIS 'HARMFUL' KNOWLEDGE.
No!
oops I didn't realize that was a rhetorical question!
government, stay the hell out of markets!
Most of the newspapers are so left wing there couldn't be a diversity standard they don't already exceed.
Jeez, Im waiting for Jeffrey Immelt and his fellow slime buckets to ask for "bailout" money also. Whos next, Phil Jones and Michael Mann? Maybe George Soros? Ive got some "bailout " for them. They can have there "bailout" money if they want to swim with cut throats at the annual Great White convention(no, thats not racist). You know, Jaws types.
What's CRA stand for? Communist Reeducation Act?
"In their desperation to stay alive, as newspapers and other legacy channels of distribution collapse, surviving publishers will maneuver themselves for prime suckling positions on the public teat."
This is the funniest line I've read all week.
Cardin, like his fellow "senator" the very fugly Babs Mikulski, couldnt read anything with sense not named the communist manifesto. Im sure Beb and Babs have "read" Karl Marx. They do everything according to his book.
PRAVDA is the first thing I thought of when I saw the first blurb from idiots proclaiming the Government should 'support' the newspapers. I travel to 3rd world countries where the leaders regularly publish their own newspapers (usually DOZENS) that are supportive of their agenda.
We call this propaganda Comrades…
The fact that the government has an interest in "saving" the media says it all. Does anyone think they would be interested if the media was unbiased and objective?
They need to pass cap and trade to save us from the enormous horrors of
global warmingclimate change, yet they need to support an industry based on tree slaughtering (the destruction of natural carbon sinks), the transportation of people and products seven days a week, sometimes more, which uses a highly inefficient distribution method where the results are scattered in small batches far and wide, which requires considerable individual cost to dispose of the end products properly but they will likely wind up in a landfill, let alone the toxic chemicals and wastes produced from the assorted inks as well as the paper manufacturing itself, that is in such trouble due to competition based on the use of clean electrons that can easily be generated from renewable sources with no noticeable environmental damage. They advocate the clean while supporting the dirty above the clean.
I Am So Confused!
Wait. That picture, second line. I know it's in Cyrillic script, but, doesn't that first word look like "Oprah"?
Ah, I was wondering where her name came from!
…While the dapper Old Guard (both the smoking and charred)
Live in sweat as their sway is declining,
Since they've peddled as news faintly prejudiced views
With their 'scoops' and their polls heterodyning.
Now they're shocked at the whore who, unkempt, at the door
Has been summoned by standards invidious,
For, as Gresham embraced; when the coin is debased
The replacement is something more hideous.
There are one or two rules
(Half a dozen's my take)
Whence good ethicist schools
Will predict, if you break;
The replacement is ever more hideous.
–Of Kos We Can
I tend to disagree with you on the Military Intel thing. MI is good, its what the bureaucrats let the military act upon that is the problem.
Правда – мой друг
Sorry, Pravda is my friend. At this rate we might want to get use to that saying
I…must …resist!!!

IMO – The desire for "minority" oriented programing/content, and religious diversity will be how the government will attack talk radio. An organization called "So We Might See", an interfaith coalition for media justice, is already formed and pushing for diversity. Their website is http://www.uccfiles.com/swms/
One of the members of the coalition is the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)….the same group lecturing our troops at Ft. Hood. Other members are: National Council of Churches, United Church of Christ,Disciples Justice Action Network, Presbyterian News Service, Evangelical Lutheran Church of America,…
Watch out for these diversity, social justice groups….they are bad news.

See, you would think that, but in fact they're one of the less diverse industries. Take out the sports page, and the numbers get a lot worse. I'm trying to find the NY Times article that admits that their office is one of the least diverse work environments around.

I agree, MI does do a good job, it's often the filtering system of "civilian advisers" that get in the way. God forbid a commander would get the full picture. The "need to know basis" is not a Hollywood line, many intel agencies live by this. Many times for damn good reason & sometimes just to cover somebody's butt.
As for science…What's true today is wrong tomorrow, the Earth is flat, we our the center of the Universe, Tomatoes are piousness, Satin is not real because we don't know how to test for it (by the way, Satin is alive & well. I know, I married her daughter). As any good scientist will tell you, question every theory & when you are satisfied that you have the correct answer, question it again & again & again.
