Media Spin on Fort Hood: Catching Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder at the Office

If you said religion or politics, you’re not a member of the conventional media. In the first 24 hours after the shooting, media reports portrayed suspect Nidal Hasan not as an angry Islamic extremist but as a victim, both of post-traumatic stress disorder and more broadly of American foreign policy.
In a piece posted at Truelsant.com, psychologist Todd Essig claims that Hasan was “wounded by war…. before he first pulled a trigger.” Mental health professionals, he writes, can be victims of “vicarious traumatization,” a disorder that can prove “contagious and deadly.” Keep in mind that Hasan was never deployed to a war zone. Apparently he caught it at the office.
On NPR, Tom Gjelton told listeners that it was important to question the level of exposure Hasan had to the traumatic stories of other soldiers while in residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Gjelton referenced Hasan’s negative performance reviews at work and some interpersonal trouble — he reportedly proselytized about his faith to patients and professional colleagues — but NPR concluded with a focus on how deployments can cause stress, in this case presumably enough to shoot more than 30 people.
On Larry King Live the night of the shooting, Dr. Phil McGraw echoed that theory, speculating that Hasan was disturbed by stories he heard from soldiers trying to reintegrate into society, and snapped. Blogging at the Huffington Post, California Democratic Party Leader Christine Pelosi suggested that Hasan was suffering from “invisible wounds of war” and called for de-stigmatizing PTSD.
Maybe. Yet Hasan’s Army medical records show he had less than a year of clinical practice.
Nor is there evidence that Hasan ever applied for Conscientious Objector status, a fairly conventional request that might have spared him any combat role in Afghanistan.
In fact at this point there is no evidence of any kind about Hasan’s motives, much less about the existence of airborne strains of PTSD. He’s not talking. Until he does, it’s probably best not to assume the Army is somehow responsible for his killings.

His mother's death, so soon after his father's, may have had an affect on him, but in 2001, the Imam at the mosque he went to, in Virginia, was new there and a well known radical. I bet it was that Imam's influence that pushed Nidal over the edge, long ago.

Great to know that this is the psychological help we give our veterans…I hope the investigations include follow-up for the soldiers that were subjected to his 'care'. My husband lived at Ft. Hood before his tour in Iraq where he got hurt and lost a leg, and when he stayed at Walter Reed this freak was there at the time. Creepy. Thank God he never treated him. The army really needs to do some serious background checks. This is unacceptable. How many other plots to carry out attacks at military bases were discovered. This has to be the last night. No mas.

He came to dislike the Army and doesn’t appear to ever have had an assignment away from home (DC) until Fort Hood even after a 10 years on active duty. So now he’s off in Texas, away from home, smack in the middle of the real Army, where soldiers preparing for deployment were not wringing their hands over the war as many in DC are wont to do, especially in Northwest where he was stationed.

They're not, Rita – I work with lots of Muslim kids through service clubs at school, and my son has several friends who are Muslim…they're all awesome kids. If your only exposure to the Muslim faith/culture is what you've seen on TV, your response is natural – but true followers really are peaceful, and among the kindest people I've met in my half-century of life. Don't let the media manipulate your emotions – it would be like saying all white guys are Tim McVeigh or the Unabomber. But I fully agree that this guy should have been rooted out…it would seem that the Army needs more resources to fight the enemy within as well as the enemy on 'the other side'.

I've got a couple questions. Have you been able to see REAL data onthis guy's service record? I've found references that he has been in the Army for MANY years (prior enlisted, medical school, Waltr Reed, then Ft. Hood). I have also seen reports that he is a pushbutton Major, no service, only 1 year clinical experience and basically just recently finished medical school and got insta-Major.
I've yet to see solid CONCRETE answers towhat is the full extent of his military service.

Purportedly, he has been in the military between 10-12 years, although information is conflicting. The military paid (thats right WE paid) for his education. He has about four years of college and two years of grad school. His schooling has cost US in excess of $500,000.00. From the time he graduated, he has drawn a six figure salary, with free healthcare and full government benefits.
Personally, I do not think WE got a good deal. I think we need our money back……

The so-called mainstream news media reported that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan a 39-year-old Army psychiatrist at Fort Hood opened fire at the base shooting and killing 13 people, (12 soldiers and a civilian) and wounding several others. Yet, in their reporting they failed to mention that he was a Muslim. Political correctness at it’s best.
Prior to the shooting Hasan shouted "Allahu Akbar!" — an Arabic phrase for "God is great!"
Some people, along with the media are making excuses for this murdering terrorists claiming Hasan may have suffered from “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,” even though he was never in combat. They also claimed he was upset about going to Afghanistan although he would not have been on the front line; he was a psychiatrist and would have been behind the lines supposedly counseling troubled soldiers. What about the soldiers that were treated by this psychiatrist? How were they affected?….
Y'all think our Homeland Security queen will update her infamous Memo, and perhaps add Active Militant Radical Muslims to her list of people they need to keep an eye out for – you know, along with White Veterans and all those other scary people?

Even President Barack Hussein Obama wants to be politically correct and make excuses for this killer. When the incident first occurred at Fort Hood Obama said in a statement, "We don't know all the answers yet. And I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts." Ironically, he jumped to conclusions regarding the incident with the white police officer from Cambridge and the black professor from Harvard.
Obama said. "It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas. It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil." He's concerned about the soldiers’ safety at home. I'm concerned about their safety wherever they are. They are on our team….
..Now, Obama states, “We can not fully know what leads a man to do such a thing,” referring to the radical Muslim jihadist that struck at Fort Hood. Would you expect anything else coming from Obama? After all he said he has empathy for the terrorists who on 9/11 crashed the planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania killing thousands of American citizens. He also said we, the American citizens should have empathy for them. Obama is an embarrassment, an appeaser and is dangerous regarding America's safety.
The military is also being politically correct and are refraining from revealing that Hasan was a Muslim with anti-American sentiments. Investigators were trying to piece together how and why Hasan allegedly gunned down his comrades….

Hasan attended the Maryland graduate military medical program and classmates there complained to the faculty about Hasan's "anti-American propaganda," but said a fear of appearing discriminatory against a Muslim student kept officers from filing a formal complaint.Another classmate said Hasan once gave a jarring presentation to students in which he argued the war on terrorism was a war against Islam.
Dr. Val Finnell complained to administrators at the military university about what he considered Hasan's "anti-American" rants. Finnell said, "He at least should have been confronted about these beliefs, told to cease and desist, and to shape up or ship out."
Hasan reported for duty at Fort Hood in July, after working at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington for six years. Though Hasan apparently had problems at Walter Reed, officials at the Fort Hood hospital said they weren't aware of any issues with his job performance. The problem was he is a Muslim and because of political correctness (PC) nothing was done…

I served during Jimmah's time and thought I would never experience a POTUS that had so little regard for the military, but, low and behold, it has come full circle. Though I have retired outside the USA, my patriotism doesn't waver. The current POTUS is destroying our image and will eventually destroy our military if he goes unchecked. I pray daily that folks like the ones her on Big Government persevere and noy only undo the damage already done, but prevent any further damage to the military and the American people. Need to correct you a little. The "Civilian" policeman was employed by the US Army to supplement the MP's, not a civilian from off the base. Many posiyions have been "outsourced" in the past years to free up uniformed people to be available for foreign postings. She was assigned on Fort Hood, not Likeen.
