Random House Doubles Down, Defends Anti-Palin Literary Hoax; McGinniss Spins Emails of Omission
by Andrew BreitbartDave Weigel of Slate reports that Crown/Random House, publisher of The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin, has released the following statement on allegations that Joe McGinniss’s book is a literary hoax:
Joe McGinniss’s book The Rogue is based on the author’s extensive on-the-ground reporting in Alaska, as well as in-depth interviews he conducted with approximately 200 people who have known Governor Palin at different stages of her life and career. After a thorough and careful examination of the book, including probing discussions with the author about his sources, we are confident that the reporting it contains is solid, reliable, and well-substantiated.
Yet McGinniss revealed in an e-mail in January 2011 that Random House lawyers had informed him–after all of that “extensive-on-the-ground reporting in Alaska, as well as in-depth interviews”–that his manuscript contained nothing beyond “tawdry gossip,” and that his most “salacious stories” lacked “factual evidence.”
Yesterday, McGinniss told Mediaite: “My reporting continued beyond the date of the email.” In an attempt to prove that claim, he has released e-mails to Weigel showing his correspondence with prostitute Shailey Tripp, as he attempted to substantiate his claim that “Todd had sex with a hooker.”
But the new emails only highlight McGinniss’s decision not to include allegations about a “hooker” in the published book. They do not show why McGinniss chose to include almost every other allegation in The Rogue about which he had admitted in January that there was no “factual evidence.” McGinniss omits any emails relating to those claims.
As Big Journalism wrote yesterday, the only new “evidence” that McGinniss appears to have obtained between January 2011 and the book’s release this week concerns Trig Palin Trutherism and is cited to “blogs,” not on-the-ground reporting or interviews.
Last month, in a comment on his own blog, McGinniss provided clues to the true source of his new “evidence”:
I have great respect for–and have learned a lot from–all the bloggers I’ve already mentioned, including Immoral Minority, Progressive Alaska, Palingates, Politicalgates, and several others…
I know Phil Munger and Jesse Griffin personally. I consider myself their friend. Whether I’m their friend or not, I admire much of what they do on their blogs. I’ve exchanged several emails with Patrick of Politicgates [sic]. I think the Politicalgates archives are the best single available resource for anyone wondering why questions are still being asked about Sarah really being Trig’s birth mother. The Immoral Minority archives are also rich in widely ignored material…
The question remains: what new evidence of any kind–never mind “solid, reliable, and well-substantiated”–did McGinniss discover between January and September 2011 to substantiate the following claims:
a) Todd had sex with a hooker, or with anyone else outside his marriage.b) Sarah had an affair with Brad Hanson, or anyone else.c) Track was a druggie who enlisted in the army to avoid a jail term. Or that he vandalized Wasilla school buses.d) Willow was involved in the vandalism of the empty house in Meadow Lakes. Or that Sarah rushed back from Hawaii to put the lid on that.e) Trig is not Sarah’s natural born child.f) Bristol was promiscuous as a high schooler and drank and used drugs, or became pregnant again after Tripp’s birth.
The answer, thus far, is none.
We already knew that Random House lied when it promised The Rogue would not invade Sarah Palin’s privacy.
It is now apparent that Random House is misleading the public about the accuracy of McGinniss’s reporting on her personal life.

Hold their feet to the fire Andrew.
You're the only one who will do it.
McGinnis is slime. May the Palins win a giant-sized defamation judgment against him and Random House.
Remember that defamation gives rise to damages for each publication. So, for every book printed each defendant should owe the Palins roughyl 100,000.00. Sounds fair, right? I hope both wind up begging for loose change on skid row by the time Sarah's through with them.
Does Random House really want to continue this path? Maybe they should consult with MSNBC how bad revenue is affected when you start to defend garbage.
Off Topic: I hit Huffington today on another machine and now have a malware redirect infection…BEWARE!
This is rather par for the course for left wing media hatchet jobs. The best remedy, of course, is to not buy the book.
Keep pitching, Andrew. Nice to see someone taking it to them.
Keep on hammering them with actual facts and insist on the same. Unless published under "fiction" the Palins should go after all of them and prove that published lies are still LIES!
Nice job Andrew. Did they think you wouldn't uncover such a sham? Palin is not hurt one bit by this. She is a beloved loyal American who has no problem sticking it to Obama from day one! Everyone admires her gumption!

Dear Liberal Hack Journalists and Liberal Democrats:
If you think a story about a politician fornicating with anything up to and including a dead farm animal is going to change our vote come November 6, 2012 – your delusional. This time it's personal, its not business anymore, we want a political liberal bloodbath. We want you liberals run out of Washington on a high speed rail that the taxpayers paid for at light speed, then we want to blow up the tracks so you’s can’t come back – ever. In fact, if we could reroute that train to the bridge to nowhere and drop the bridge, we would.
Thus, print your lies, repeat your falsehoods, personally attack our pundits, it doesn't matter anymore – you've made this personal and we're pissed, and you will politically pay a dear price for your crimes against the citizens of this country. We are confident that we can get this new crop of representatives to serve our interest, the American citizens interests, and not your pinko-commie interest. We know we’ve got work to do, but it is you, and your asinine laws, regulation, and taxes, that are stopping it from happening, and you hacks in the left wing media sticking us with this will not matter in the least.
I Joe Doakes pronounce you guilty, and on November 6, 2012 I will be voting straight Republican, sentence to be carried out in January 2013.
Respectfully,
JD
I would contribute to a legal fund to wipe these people out. Unconscionable behavior from the publisher, and this sorry excuse for DNA needs to be punished severely.
Remember, CBS stood by Dan Rather in regards to the made-up documents about President Bush's National Guard detail — even after it was found the font used in the documents wasn't created until 12 years after the date of the letter.
The publisher is standing by their man, until they finally throw him under the bus. That time is fast approaching.
That's what they want.
Don't give the enemy what they want.
Great fun Andrew, keep punding away brother.
Boycott Random House and certainly do not by this book.
Random House has to be brought to account for this, ie. successful defamation suit(or libel suit).
The scumball McGinniss even showed some shred of a integrity, when he informed Random House attornery's of his lack of substantiation of claims. It appears Random House knowingly, with disregard to the truth, went ahead and published the book. They're toast.
It's a political hatchet job.
They all know they can't prove any of their smears but that is not the point.
McGinniss has gone on all of the liberal TV platforms and was allowed to spew his bile in front of millions.
That was the point of the book.
In this way all the people who fear or hate Sarah Palin can repeat all of his disgusting lies, question whether or not it is true and smear her too but have none of the blame because they are only discussing someone else's book.
That's the oldest trick in the book. You insult someone by repeating what someone else said as if it is a question all the while feigning disbelief.
"Oh come on now…is there any proof Sarah Palin snorted cocaine…?"
See. It's easy.
She is hurt by it, my friend. I appreciate your pollyanna attitude and sunny disposition, but there are tens of thousands of people who will believe these things no matter how badly McGinnis is smacked down by Andrew. That doesn't mean Andrew should stop his work–just that Palin is being hurt by it.
I know Phil Munger and Jesse Griffin personally. I consider myself their friend. Whether I’m their friend or not, I admire much of what they do on their blogs
Kinda sez it all, doesn't it? I guess Eric Blowhole is miffed that he wasn't included.
Left: solid, reliable, and well-substantiated = Tawdry gossip, lacking factual evidence.
Random House is in the full blown CYA mode. This is going to cost them a substatial amount Bernacnke bucks. Expect a big Greyhound to rumble down the highway with a fat pervert scraping the asphalt underneath.
I hope she bankrupts this douchebag.
Should have read your comment first….:-)
They shouldn't face justice for their slander?
Schadenfreunde times eleventy!
..and I will enjoy every second of it.
McGinnis is just another stupid liberal. Their time is almost over.

THE ANTI LIBERAL ZONE
Hmm? Twenty messages in and no red-iconed Media Matters trolls. They must be hiding over this.
At least, the reviewers at the major outlets for such things have scathed the book. Of course, the Palinophobes are lauding it to the skies over at Amazon, but that was foreordained.
The liberal establishment hates Sarah Palin, but they fear her more! They can not stand to see a common, honest, hard-working, public-educated woman succeed! After all, Sarah Palin-disease my be contagious and they fear a whole lot of common folk may suddenly show their true character and reject the liberal lie!!!
Dear Lord, please allow me to serve on a libel jury case soon.
I'm all over this story like white on Rice!
"I love the smell of defamation lawsuits in the morning . . . smells like, VICTORY."
The more press McGinnis gets, the more books he sells. This kind of person should be shamed into a dark cave with his moral equals–like Tyson.
You racist pig.
This has all the makings of a watershed moment for Random House. Or is it a "woodshed" moment? An awful lot of people who never gave a second thought to whether or not they were buying books from Random House are going to question whether or not they are supporting this kind of crap when they buy Random House books.
I personally am questioning the ethics and professionalism of Random House in publishing this trash.
To steal a line from Hee Haw, "If it weren't for bad press he'd have no press at all . . . gloom, despair and agony on him!"
Hope you bought his book. It's outstanding, a must read.
"Righteous Indignation"
It's the least we can do.
You have 6 gallons of water. You are in the dessert. It will take 6 to get across. Would you waste 1 because you were angry?
Palin is smart . . . Mcginnis is a moron.
ps. 3 days later . . . Palin is crossing the desert, she has 6 gallons of waters to get across. She gets angry. Now she only needs one. As she runs across it to kick the legal crapola out of a publishing house that, allegedly, lied.
In the bad old days liberal authors had their books revied by liberal critics who seldom questioned anything as long as it fit the agenda. Those days are over Mr. McGuinness.
double down? Double the lawsuit amount! They should be toast -unless Obama confiscates them with Kelo and ….
Indeed, that's one publisher off my list of sources. First ever.
Well said. If we can get the left-wing boot off the American economy's throat we could lead us and the rest of the world out of this socialist-inspired recession. The only good thing about O's election is that they have "…awakened a sleeping giant…".
Great note Joe, but I do wish your valediction had read 'sincerely' instead of respectfully. In my most humble opinion these evil minions do not deserve your or my respect. Just saying.
Of course Random is going to stand behind McGinniss, until they have no choice but to realize the stupidity of their decision. No more random house in my house…pornographic garbage gossip does not figure into our literary family's reading habits.
Something doesn't add up here. McGinniss' sleazy book comes out; non-candidate Palin then polls within 5 points of Obama. Am I missing something?
Hey Random House, how about a book based on an author’s extensive on-the-ground reporting in Chicago, as well as in-depth interviews conducted with approximately 200 people who have known Barak Obama at different stages of his life and career?….mmm?
Well? why don't you do that…could it be because Random House has joined the house ignorance and Liable?
Random House has now shown itself an enemy of the truth and of the American people.
I will not purchase any books from Random House not even a children's book
Mine too
I hold everyone who voted for this Obamanation personally responsible for this mess!
I guess they must Randomly tell the truth, but not often and certainly not in this case.
Even the bird cage liner (aka New York Times) panned this piece of crap book.
Ethics? They can't spell ethics, let alone have any. Professionalism to them is making a buck no matter that it is from lies and character assassinations.
Not that it's really relevant to anything–but I own two copies of it. I pre-ordered it from the iBookstore for my iPad (because it annoys Apple just a little bit to even sell conservative stuff) and I purchased a physical copy from my local Borders before it bit the dust (because it annoys them to sell conservative books as well!).
Up the ante: boycott Random House totally – I, for one, am not going to buy another product from Random House until they right this wrong and retract all the smears and lies being put forth with this horrible book
The LSM and their willing accomplishes are little more than a corrupt and treacherous Fifth Column. Boycott the filthy bastards, cancel your subscriptions and inform their advertisers that you will not purchase their products. Bankrupt the scum!!!
What will the reaction here be if Palin DOESN'T sue? Will she still be assum to be the victim?
I ask because this. Kind of "yeah, we will beat you in court" reaction is common on BOTH sides, but then, when no action is taken (it is either provable or not, true or false), the issue falls from attention.
I wouldn't walk across the street to read this obok, but I also remember lots of liberal friends even more indignant over man-whore John Edwards' treatment by the Nat. Enquirer and…whoops, they looked like blind syncopbhants when the truth came out.
I hope the Palins go after Random House with a vengeance, and break their back.
Just my Obama inflated $.02 worth.
Rice IS white…
Andy, old liberal turned greedy neocon, you are the best, making money out of nothing, getting the scum all riled up for something as inconsequential as a stupid book on an unimportant person. i wonder how much Random house pays you for all this PR?
Palin’s narrative is fun, inspiring and all-American.
Palin didn’t make a mess cracking the glass ceiling. She simply glided through it.
I don't know why any Republican would ever buy any book published by random house, ever. I am a voracious reader, and buy books on nearly a weekly basis. I know that i will examine any book I buy to determine the publisher, and that I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER BOOK PUBLISHED BY RANDOM HOUSE.
This smash hit book of lies on Sarah Palin made it all the way to number 1485(!!!!) on the "best seller" chart. If you have a large family you can probably get that high on the list. This Joe creep deserves all the embarrassment he receives from this book of lies. Why do the libturds hate her so much; is it because she is smart, strong, female, conservative, pro 2nd Amendment, can speak w/o a TelePrompTer, isn't afraid of their lies, attractive (please see Debbie wassonherfaceaman Schultz) articulate and…. Well, yeah they don't like her. Watch for the attacks to start on Christie and maybe soon on Marco Rubio.
Sounds like the Palins are going to hold their feet to the fire.
They may end up owning Random House Publishing. Who knows, they might have been able to buy it for $1 next week though.
Why would anyone ever go to the Huffing & Puffing Post?
I guess they will now Goo . . . I sure would not want to be that publishing house now.
They must be having kittens.
ABC = ALL BULL CRAP.
I hope Sarah cleans them out.
They know that they are wrong. You can make a unsubstantiated claim in a forum like this. Because others are free to instantaneously refute it. But once you fix it and make it permanent in print a much higher burden must be met . . . thus the lawsuit.
Liberals are truly evil liars willing to do anything to destroy a person's life just because of opposing views. They will do anything to cause pain to their enemies.
To watch monkeys throw feces.
Random House, meet Dante's Inferno…
I thought people went there to watch monkeys eat their own feces.
You notice how the cons have become moonbats just like the libs? Priceless!
Wouldn't Rice deny the story? crickets….
The derangement of these guys still amaze me. How can 'one' person drive an entire group of other people so crazy? I pray Sarah has 24hr security because these are slime-ball nut cases that could pop at any moment.
Why do they hate her? Can someone please explain the reasons they use for their hate?
Mr. Breitbart – keep it up – keep investigating and keep illuminating us all – you're outfit is awesome! And the Palin's have the integrity and determination to take Random House to the mat – maybe then liars like McGuinness will have a harder time finding a publisher!
Any physician who was not drunk through medical school knows that the incidnce of Downs syndrome is directly related to the age of the mother so the likelihood of a teenager having a child with downs extremely rare.
I'll never buy another Random House product. I hope it becomes "Palin House Publishing". Sue their a**es off. Run Sarah run!
Dearest JD,
FOUR MORE YEARS!!!! The shellacking your idiot party will receive next November will send most of you over a cliff, and our country will be better for it. The last thing this country needs is another four years of illegal, unfunded wars, economic meltdown, piss poor disaster response, not to mention opening our doors to terrorists. If you think for one second this country is ready to go back to that, you must be high, drunk, or just plain stupid.
Just remember, in January 2013 I expect you, Rush, Sean and the rest of you miserable traitors to be on a one way plane to Somalia, land of no government. They would love to have you guys there. No silly government intervention, stupid taxes…you can just live the way God intended it…on the run from Khat chewing anarchists…enjoy!!!
Up Yours
LibsRule
OUT F-ING STANDING JOE!!!!!! Excellent post. May I add my own two cents? All you RINO Statists may as well pack your bags too (this means you specifially Dick Lugar). Joe hit it right on the head. We're pissed and we are comming for YOU!
Death to the STATIST ideology!!!
Semper Fi Joe!
Why do you think you are right?
September 26, 2011
Dear President Obama,
Ever wonder this? I do. I wonder if what I believe is true. As America has experienced your leadership we have a firm grasp as to what is going on here, and we are well aware of the desired setup come 2012. You should tell your friends to do some worrying because I do not believe that the American people are going to suffer through another con job election, the mood and tenor of the nation is in a word, pi$$ed. When that happens some politicians like yourself run around and try to harness and provoke anger and destruction. As you well know it is a much more difficult thing to convince people to, give up their freedom and liberty for more government, if the argument for that government is purely hypothetical. So this weekend you asked people to march and agitate for more stuff, and not freedom. Remember Mr. Obama, Mr. King was marching for freedom and equality not stuff.
So if your philosophical ilk is correct what should be the result of it now? What ought to be the barometer by which Americans measure that performance? Ought we look at the affordability of a home? Most Americans now even as more and more homes are foreclosed upon can’t afford to buy a home. The cost and affordability of a gallon of gasoline? Through the roof and going higher next summer. Or ought we look out into the state of the world? Pakistan after giving safe harbor to Osama Bin Laden, a mass murderer and our enemy, is now in the process of kicking us out of that nuclear armed country. Egypt and Syria are becoming more radicalized by the day – in the case of Egypt – with our military equipment, and Iran is relentlessly pursuing a deliverable nuclear weapon. How about something simple like race relations? Like I’ve said many times before, I view a man not by what he looks like, but what he does and says, and how closely those two match up. We call that character. I don’t care if your a bum, not hurting a soul or the President of The United States of America. If your words and deeds match up it’s cool. It’s a free country at least it was, before “The Patient Affordable Care Act” was passed without one Republican vote.
Then there is the cost of doing all of this dumb stuff. Doing dumb things is very expensive. I’ve done lots of dumb, and I’ve paid the price, I’ve never had the ability or frankly lack of shame to make my neighbor pay for my own stupidity. I imagine if I did, or we did as a nation, then those costs would have to meet our endless appetites in the form of skyrocketing debt and deficits. Which is exactly what we have. They are at the point now where we may never recover from it without a war. Why war? Well, I’ll tell you. When governments fail people lose faith en mass, and they are susceptible to some seriously evil stuff. They look to place blame and then they decide it is cheaper to take then to work. So they look over a border or two and think “Hey, what we need is right over there, lets just take it!” These days we have nuclear weapons and even bigger bombs, but I don’t think people really know what these things can do anymore, they seem to be happily ignorant of them. I’m not supporting Mr. Paul, but I did see a funny sign in someones car window it read “You keep your dumb ideas, I’ll keep my liberty!” I’ll vote for that. If he gets the nomination I’ll be voting for him.
Government, in the final analysis, must resort to force and coercion to attain it’s aims. Why? Because the citizens of this nation have very different ideas how they want to live their lives. Some want to achieve nothing, some just want to survive it with their soul intact and not hurt anyone, others want it all. Can you guess which one I am? Because I’m betting most are like me and not like you Mr. Obama. We have a long road to march back to being free and right now I’d much rather follow Mr. Cain. That man has character. That is what we need most now, in time we will elect someone with it.
Of this I have little doubt.
Respectfully,
Joe Doakes
"Up yours"
I think you can do better.
I will be doing some shooting with some wounded warriors soon. I've never served, but it is an honor standing up for all of you.
Give 'em hell Sarah! Glad to see someone fight back!
It's hard to win a defamation suit as a public figure. I hope she wins should she decide to file, but she will have to prove actual malice, which no public figure has ever done so far as I know.
I find it unconscionable that you would hope to someday see dregs of humanity such as McGinnis and his cohorts on skid row. Whatever on earth did the pitiful wretches who live there do to deserve them for neighbors?
Thank you Andrew. SCREW you Joe. GO PALIN!!!!
McGuiness or what ever you go by. Lets go hunting. I would love to hang out with you! What a guy!
Maybe that is why they hired Sharpton?
No one understands a friggen word . . .
no. Rice is actually slightly brown. It gets turned white in the enriching process.
How many school books does Random House publish? How many lies are taught to our children? THAT is what I want to know. If they are willing to publish such slime, what else are they forcing on unknowing people?
I hope McGinniss is proven to be a FRAUD and gets sued out the Wazoo for his inflammatory book. Bu I also hope Sarah Palin and Company will take care of all this outside the media. I, for one, am suffering from Palin fatigue. She should not bring all this scandal, whether it's made up or not, to the most important election in my lifetime. Stay out this time, Sarah, and try it again later. It's too much for this country at this time in our history. We MUST defeat Obozo or we won't have a country left to defend. The main story of the day should be about JOBS, THE ECONOMY, OUR DEBT, etc. etc., and not about another nasty book about the Palin family.
You mean Random Sh*t House!
Keep in mind that years ago, McGinness sandbagged Dr. Jeffrey McDonald with his book, Fatal Vision. He gained McDonald's trust and co-operation by promising him that his book would vindicate him. The he decided that the book would make more money by painting McDonald as guilty. McDonald sued and that one cost McGuinness $325,000. I wonder how much he will shell out this time.
Once cleaned they could reorganize under Randumb House…
I am one of the most severe Palin skeptics out there, but I do not think that she deserves THIS.
I think that if she had hired this guy to trash her family to make those that doubted her feel SORRY for her, that could have been a good career move. I now feel sorry for her, and view this author and ANYONE who views him as credible a sorry excuse for a journalist.
May this man rot in the hell that he has created for himself.
They will make him liable if it's found he "made stuff up" – or copied made-up stuff from others, and knew it wasn't true – pretty much as he states in his email to his friend the blogger. I think it's a pretty crass attempt to make money, but McGinniss, not the publisher, will be the one ending up in court. I am sure they are counting on Sarah Palin just letting it go
By the way – this type of thing isn't new. I think most people are really tired of it, and the best news to me would be Random House getting all of the books returned.

When is Joe mcginnis going to look into Obama's background we all have facts with pictures to prove some of the allegations. The only thing we can't get are school records passports, stories from old girlfriends or boyfriends except Larry Sincalir but he got harrassed.threatned, demoralized and than thrown in Jail by Beau Biden in Delaware for four days back in june 2008. These of course are facts you can look up in the local delaware papers.
Isn't Wiegel "I really though his name was weasel" the same one that was involved with Journalist "the protectors of Obama"
Guess Random House forgets that there are millions of Republicans and Conservatives who are Palin supporters who read their books; and they're doubling down? Well they can kiss tens of millions (maybe hundreds of millions even) of dollars in sales goodbye.
I have as much contempt for Sarah Palin as any thinking person, but McGinnis really is a dirtbag. I hope she sues him into bankruptcy.
What a slimy little prick. And so stupid! All he has to do is write about the things she proudly acknowledges: her total ignorance of basic economics, foreign issues, and history.
Dude, going on that site is the internet equivalent to having unprotected sex with a crack whore.
GEEZ, ANDY — C'MON! RAISE THE CHARACTERS-PER-COMMENT LIMIT TO 2K CHARACTERS — WHAT COULD THAT HURT?
Boycott Random House and any affiliates and subsidiaries — let's do our best to cost them piles and piles of money!
Thank you andrew… The media knows the power over them, and they will bend to save their monopolies… Thank God there are some willing to put principal over power.
Andrew,
You are resorting to incomplete and inaccurate reporting to bolster your claim that McGinninis has written a purely slanderous piece against Palin. In the letter you cite, McGinninis refers to 8 items that needed further investigation before publishing. As you would have your readers believe, the letter he wrote is an admission that his book is a complete work of fiction. Unfortunately, your readers will probably not investigate the source documents thoroughly. If they are interested, they can review the complete documents, as I have done on multiple sites; like ABC News' website (OMG – a Liberal media outlet!) I hope the Right does not have to resort to lying to substantiate their claims, as you have accused the Left of doing.
