Planting the Seeds: The Politicized Art Behind the ACORN Plan
by Andrew BreitbartEverything you needed to know about the unorthodox roll out of the now-notorious ACORN sting videos was hidden in plain sight in my Sept. 7 column, “Katie Couric, Look in the Mirror.” ACORN was not the only target of those videos; so were Katie, Brian, Charlie and every other mainstream media pooh-bah.
They were not going to report this blockbuster unless they were forced to. And they were. What’s more, it ain’t over yet. Not every hint I dropped in that piece about what was to come has played itself out yet.Stay tuned.
When filmmaker and provocateur James O’Keefe came to my office to show me the video of him and his friend, Hannah Giles, going to the Baltimore offices of ACORN – the nation’s foremost “community organizers” – dressed as a pimp and a prostitute and asking for – and getting – help for various illegal activities, he sought my advice. In the past, Mr. O’Keefe created brilliant social satire that rocked his college campus and even made its way on to the talk-radio and cable-news shows, but the magnitude of his latest adventure had the potential to rock the political establishment.
I was awed by Mr. O’Keefe’s guts and amazed by the footage, but explained that the mainstream media would try to kill this important and illuminating expose about a corrupt and criminal political racket, and that the well-funded political left would go into “war room” mode, with 25-year-old Mr. O’Keefe and 20-year-old cohort Miss Giles in the cross hairs. I felt I had a moral obligation to protect these young muckrakers from the left and from the media, and to devise a strategy that would force the media’s hand.
Once the American public saw with its own eyes the grotesque, common practices of ACORN’s housing offices, Mr. O’Keefe and Miss Giles could no longer be a legitimate focus of media scrutiny. Kill the messenger doesn’t work with the American people when they realize that the message is so devastating and honest. I think the video exposed the misuse of public funds and systemic manipulation of the tax code in the name of “helping the poor.”
If Mr. O’Keefe dumped the videos on YouTube, the political powers would have killed the expose before it got traction. I half-joked that he should secretly tape pitching the major television networks exclusive use of his videos for their nightly news broadcasts. But a simpler, less controversial method proved as fruitful.
I told him that in addition to launching his compelling and stylized Web videos, we needed to offer the full transcripts and audio to the public in the name of transparency, and to offer Fox News the full footage of each video before each was released.We had to devise a plan that would force the media to see the evidence before they had enough time to destroy these two idealistic 20-something truth seekers. Mr. O’Keefe agreed to post the full audio and full transcript of his video experiences at BigGovernment.com.
Thus was born a multimedia, multiplatform strategy designed to force the reluctant hands of ABC, CBS, NBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post.
Videos of five different ACORN offices in five separate cities would be released on five consecutive weekdays over a full week – Baltimore, Washington, New York, San Bernardino and San Diego. By dripping the videos out, we exposed to anyone paying attention that ACORN was lying through its teeth and that the media would look imbecilic continuing to trot out their hapless spokespeople.

First Post? Thank you for your efforts. Reminds me of a documentary I saw about the first ever undercover video – something about an urban storefront being a 'numbers operation' for the mob.
Dig up the footage from the 1950s, do a story on how far journalism as a profession has come, few would read it; however, as a J-school thought piece it might inspire future J-school grads to do their job as Pulitzer et al did as described by Drudge during his DC speech to the Press Club.

I applaud you, Mr. Breitbart. But more importantly, we need you to help us keep the pressure on Washington to stop funding this criminal entity. It should not be the onus of the american people to prove there is corruption and therefore disqualify or call for congress to 'defund' a group receiving taxpayer dollars. Who wants to produce a fake video of NRA officials appearing to help illegal gun traffickers, and offer *that* to CNN/ABC/NBC/CBS, just to compare the old-media coverage stats of that versus the ACORN scandal, before revealing that it was a trap?
I would love to see something like this, complete with an NRA official agreeing to a high-profile hostile interview in his seemingly weakest moment, only to reveal on a live broadcast that there was no real NRA scandal, just an experiment to see how much more prominent and saturated the coverage would be were it not a left-leaning organization embroiled in the alleged scandal. Be great if he could deliver numeric comparisons by network before they pulled the plug…

I would like to be in the news conference meetiing at the NYT tomorrow when the subject of discussion is how they handle the embarrassment you caused them, and how can they recognize a setup in the future. The answer at any ethical news operation would be, "why don't we just make sure we report the news?"
That simply won't happen. They will spend days trying to dig up every piece of dirt they can find on you and the two corageous journalists who made those incredible tapes.
Your satisfaction is there are hundreds, more likely thousands of journalists, like James and Hannah who want to help you out. Your support, especially on the legal side, is a great example. It will encourage more to turn up.

You know, this defunding isn't set in stone yet. So far it's part of another bill that's not going to pass right away. I read someone's article (not sure if it was here or not) that it needs to be it's own separate bill. I'd hold off on any more videos until it's seen what the end game is with all that. If it starts to look like it's dying down, then release another one and wait. Maybe even keep a couple in the back pocket until 2010 campaigns start revving up. Of the 7 senators and 75 in congress that voted to keep funding, many of them will be trying to renew their "membership". Maybe they could use a boost by something fresh about who they voted to keep funding.

While I do hope you are correct in your assesment of the demise of the MSM, I would caution against declaring victory at this point. We are talking about a vast and well organized machine. No doubt at this moment they are, as Mr. Breitbart mentioned, in their "war rooms" trying to figure out how to lay waste to those that would choose to threaten the infrastructure that they have built.
It is quite intereresting to think that individuals with the influence and reputation as Charlie Gibson have so obiously shown their hand. It is as if a gauntlet has been thrown down and his expectation is that HE should be the one that chooses our consumption of information.

At one time I was a newspaper alcoholic. As I grew older my suspicions grew that the newspapers were not only slanting the news, but deliberately not reporting it. So in comes the net with information from THE SMOKING GUN, DRUDGE, BIG GOVERNMENT ETC. Of course the ‘TIMES’ and others are crying in their milk, but they have nobody to blame but themselves. Remember Jason Blair of the New York Times? After his scandal the ‘Times’ brought in someone to oversee the news, better balance it and increase the accuracy. Nothing, Nothing changed. The ‘Grey Lady’ was considered the gold standard and probably still is however, we just don’t trust her like we did. On the McLaughlin Show they lamented the death of the papers and a free and open democracy as we know it. Not true, this is only the rebirth while giving the citizens the information the papers should have been doing all along.

Mr. Breitbart, when you rolled out BIG HOLLYWOOD you indicated that conservatives needed to be competitive in the cultural wars ring. Now a little later you unleash two welterweights against the Goliath Acorn, and Goliath takes it right on the chin and flies out of the ring. You have succeeded where all the kings horses and all the kings men have been unable to do, take a corrupt institution ouf of play, if even for a little while. This is jujitsu at its finest. The news coverage given to the ACORN SCANDAL by Andrew Breitbart, James O'Keefe, and Hannah Giles was nothing short of EXCELLENT!! Well documented, and produced!! The results are astounding also, because they detail the facts of just How Corrupt, How Fraudulent, How Deceptive this organization is!! ACORN needs another spokesperson because Bertha Lewis doesn't fit in well with the storyline!!

Has anyone seen the article on DRUDGE today about Obama wanting to give a bailout to MSM. Could that partially explain why they didn’t properly vett him during the campaign? Keep the hits coming guys! This has been the best week in a LONG LONG time for me… and to have the 9-12 DC march happen at the end of it was just icing on the ACORN cake.. ! You guys did a terrific job of exposing the corruption so well that it was undeniable. You also achieved the amazing feat of showing just how useless our main stream journalists have become.. and not just useless but lazy and hateful of a large part of America it seems. James and Hannah deserve a Pulitzer and more.. Maybe you guys can form a class action lawsuit against all ACORN affiliates on behalf of aggrieved taxpayers who have been cheated out of their money – take i $$ from ACORN and put it into more of this kind of journalism!
